The lodge was opened in the usual manner , and the minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed . The ballot was taken for Bro . Bushell , late of the Architect Lodge , as a joining member , and he was declared elected .

Mr . F . C . Phillips was next balloted for and elected a candidate for initiation . He was subsequently initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry by the W . M ., Bro . W . B . Akerman . Bro . J . Garside , I . P . M ., presenting the working tools , and Bro . R . R . Lisenden , P . M ., delivered the charge . There being no further business the lodge was closed .

The brethren afterwards supped together , after vvhich the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed by the W . M ., and responded to . Bro . T . R . Peel , P . M . 1147 , P . P . S . G . D ., replied for "The Provincial Grand Officers . "* The W . M . proposed "The Health of the Initiate" in eulogistic terms , and the brethren drank to it with great

pleasure , after vvhich Bro . Phillips returned thanks in appropriate language . "The Health of Bro . Bushell , " ( joining member ) was proposed by Bro . John R . Lever , P . M ., in glowing terms , and responded to . The toast of " The Visitors " was proposed by Bro . R . R . Lisdenden , P . M ., P . G . Stwd ., and responded to by Bros .

C . Wallworth , S . W . 1459 , and A . T . Forrest , P . M . 1633 . In response to the toast of "The P . M . 's , " Bro . W . J . Cunliffe , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., who had just returned from attending the Royal Masonic Benevolent Instution Festival , gave a very interesting account of his visit , and spoke of the satisfaction he felt on hearing the total amount subscribed by the brethren of East Lancashire announced , viz ., £ 2873 1 is . 6 d ., and also that his own lodge , the Affability ,

was one of the largest subscribers , having sent up the names of seven Stewards , and a total of 200 guineas . Bro . Cunliffe said the announcement caused his heart to rejoice that he vvas a Mason , and that he belonged to the Affability Lodge , of the province of East Lancashire . His satisfaction vvas further increased from the thought that every brother in his lodge must have responded nobly to the appeal from the Benevolent Institution for funds , thus proving themselves to be Masons at heart as well as in

name . Bro . Cunliffe ' s remarks were listened to with great attention , and much applauded .

HADLEIGH . —Virtue and Silence Lodge ( No . 332 ) . —The annual festival in connection with this lodge was celebrated at the White Lion Hotel , on Thursday , the 23 rd ult ., when Bro . James Warren , S . VV ., vvas installed as W . M . of the lodge for the ensuing year . There was a good attendance , the presence-book beine signed bv the

Bro . Arthur Grimwade proposed " lhe Masonic Charities , " and remarked what a great blessing they were . He coupled vvith the toast the name of Bro . Maude , who would represent the lodge at the Festival of the Masonic Charities in May .

Bro . the Rev . S . Maude responded . Bro . G . A . Hardacre proposed "The Worshipful Master . " They were all aware the Worshipful Master had discharged his duties in a thoroughly conscientious manner as S . W ., and he had no doubt that he would do similar credit to the choice of the lodge during the present

year . The W . M . thanked them most heartily for placing him in the chair of King Solomon . It had been filled by so many woithy and distinguished Masons that he felt some amount of reluctance in accepting it , but he hoped to give the Iodge entire satisfaction . Bro . W . Gardiner proposed " The Health ofthe I . P . M .,

Bro . Hardacre . " Everyone was proud of the name of Hardacre , and his services to the lodge merited their grateful appreciation . Bro . G . A . Hardacre said he had been earnest for the cause of Masonry , and he had always received every assistance from lhe brethren . He must particularly mention the great assistance rendered to him by the Secretary during

the past year . Bro . C J . Grimwade proposed "The Installing Master , Bro . J . C Norman . " Those who witnessed the manner in which the installation ceremony was carried out vvould certainly envy the knowledge and ability of Bro . Norman , Bro . Norman having responded , Bro . J . said it was a great honour to hold office in Grand Lodge Some of the happiest hours of his life had been spent in Lodge Virtue and Silence . Bro . M ., on behalf of the lodge , offered a cordial greeting of welcome to the visiting brethren . It was resolved that a letter expression *

the sympathy of the Iodge should be written to the widow of a deceased brother . Bro . Major Hayward kindly offered to present the lodge with an ancient sword for the Tyler's use . The weapon had been brought by him from Northern Asia , and he desired to present it as a memento of Bro . Hart ' s installation . The gift vvas accepted by the W . M . with suitable thanks . A candidate was proposed

for initiation . Other business having been transacted , the W . M . announced his intention of representing the lodge as Steward at the approaching Centenary Festival of the Girls' School , and stated that subscriptions received by him on that account vvould be paid over in one sum for the purpose of securing votes in perpetuity for the lodge . Communications were read from Bros . Toleman , Dyke '

Read , and Lye , regretting their inability to be present , and congratulatory telegrams were received by the W . M . from the VV . M . 1471 , and other brethren . After having received the " Hearty good wishes" of the visitors present , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned fo the George Hotel , where Bro . Rugg had provided an evcellent banquet , at vvhich the VV .

Master presided . T he usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and received with the customary honours , the W . M . setting the praiseworthy example of brevity . During the intervals some excellent songs were snng , in fact , the musical talent present was of a very high order , Bros . Soper and Booth—in several songs and a duet , " All ' s

well " —met with deserved applause . The W . M . also conti ibuted to the harmony of the evening by a couple of well rendered songs . Bro . Milbourne presided most efficiently at the pianoforte . Altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent , the Tyler ' s toast closing the proceedings . This lodge is to be congratulated on having secured such convenient rooms at the Town Hall , and vve wish it success .

Mr . F . C . Phillips was next balloted for and elected a candidate for initiation . He was subsequently initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry by the W . M ., Bro . W . B . Akerman . Bro . J . Garside , I . P . M ., presenting the working tools , and Bro . R . R . Lisenden , P . M ., delivered the charge . There being no further business the lodge was closed .

The brethren afterwards supped together , after vvhich the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed by the W . M ., and responded to . Bro . T . R . Peel , P . M . 1147 , P . P . S . G . D ., replied for "The Provincial Grand Officers . "* The W . M . proposed "The Health of the Initiate" in eulogistic terms , and the brethren drank to it with great

C . Wallworth , S . W . 1459 , and A . T . Forrest , P . M . 1633 . In response to the toast of "The P . M . 's , " Bro . W . J . Cunliffe , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., who had just returned from attending the Royal Masonic Benevolent Instution Festival , gave a very interesting account of his visit , and spoke of the satisfaction he felt on hearing the total amount subscribed by the brethren of East Lancashire announced , viz ., £ 2873 1 is . 6 d ., and also that his own lodge , the Affability ,

was one of the largest subscribers , having sent up the names of seven Stewards , and a total of 200 guineas . Bro . Cunliffe said the announcement caused his heart to rejoice that he vvas a Mason , and that he belonged to the Affability Lodge , of the province of East Lancashire . His satisfaction vvas further increased from the thought that every brother in his lodge must have responded nobly to the appeal from the Benevolent Institution for funds , thus proving themselves to be Masons at heart as well as in

name . Bro . Cunliffe ' s remarks were listened to with great attention , and much applauded .

Bro . Arthur Grimwade proposed " lhe Masonic Charities , " and remarked what a great blessing they were . He coupled vvith the toast the name of Bro . Maude , who would represent the lodge at the Festival of the Masonic Charities in May .

Bro . the Rev . S . Maude responded . Bro . G . A . Hardacre proposed "The Worshipful Master . " They were all aware the Worshipful Master had discharged his duties in a thoroughly conscientious manner as S . W ., and he had no doubt that he would do similar credit to the choice of the lodge during the present

year . The W . M . thanked them most heartily for placing him in the chair of King Solomon . It had been filled by so many woithy and distinguished Masons that he felt some amount of reluctance in accepting it , but he hoped to give the Iodge entire satisfaction . Bro . W . Bro . Hardacre . " Everyone was proud of the name of Hardacre , and his services to the lodge merited their grateful appreciation . Bro . G . A . Hardacre said he had been earnest for the cause of Masonry , and he had always received every assistance from lhe brethren . He must particularly mention the great assistance rendered to him by the Secretary during

M . announced his intention of representing the lodge as Steward at the approaching Centenary Festival of the Girls' School , and stated that subscriptions received by him on that account vvould be paid over in one sum for the purpose of securing votes in perpetuity for the lodge . After having received the " Hearty good wishes" of the visitors present , the lodge was closed . The brethren adjourned fo the George Hotel , where Bro . Rugg had provided an evcellent banquet , at vvhich the VV .

Master presided . T he usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and received with the customary honours , the W . M . setting the praiseworthy example of brevity . During the intervals some excellent songs were snng , in fact , the musical talent present was of a very high order , Bros . Soper and Booth—in several songs and a duet , " All ' s

well " —met with deserved applause . The W . M . also conti ibuted to the harmony of the evening by a couple of well rendered songs . Bro . Milbourne presided most efficiently at the pianoforte . Altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent , the Tyler ' s toast closing the proceedings . This lodge is to be congratulated on having secured such convenient rooms at the Town Hall , and vve wish it success .
