LEEDS . —Excelsior Chapter ( No . 1042 ) . —The annual meeting for the installation of Principals and investiture of officers took place on Thursday evening , the 23 rd ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Great George-street . The occasion was one of more than usual interest . Our veteran and eminent

E . Companion , the Rev . Dr . Smyth , G . Chap . Eng ., and 1 st Asst . G . S ., had occupied the chair of Z . from the period of the foundation of the chapter , two years ago , and upon him devolved the pleasing duty and privilege of installing the Principals . last time . A conclave of installed Principals vvas then opened , and our illustrious companion proceeded to install Comp . T . Tyers into the chair of Z ., and subsequently , in due order , Comp . W . Tyers , as H ., and Comp . Crosby , J . There were several companions present who had witnessed the vvoi king of ceremonies on former occasions by the Installing Officer , but there vvas but one opinion during the

evening-that the worthy and distinguished companion , Dr . Smyth , excelled himself , and gave one of the most touchingly beautiful and impressive exemplifications of Royal Arch ritual ever displayed . The following companions were then invested : Comps . Carter , S . E . ; Mays , as S . N . ( pro tem . ); Bingham , P . S . ; Cowbrough , Treas . ; and Barraud , Janitor . Before closing the chapter a pleasing surprise

vvas sprung upon the outgoing ' / .., Comp . Dr . Smyth . Comp . Tyers , Z ., addressing the companions , said they were aware how highly the chapter was indebted to Comp . Dr . Smyth for his services as Z . for the past two yeais . During that period he had been the chief support of the chapter . He had done all in his power to maintain the efficiency of the working , and in every possible way he had

been to the fore in furthering the prosperity of Royal Arch Masonry , and in promoting the harmony and good feeling amongst the companions by setting an example of seltsacririce , self-abnegation , and urbanity to the humblest of them . Long might the Grand Architect of the Universe

prosper his handiwork , and spare him to adorn the Craft he loved so well . He had great pleasure in asking their distinguished companion to accept of the accompanying testimonial of admiration and esteem from the chapter . This vvas a beautifully illuminated and framed address as follows :

" At a Regular Convocation of the Excelsior Chapter of Royal Arch Masonry , No . 1042 , held at the Masonic Hall , Great George-street , Leeds , on the 26 th day of January , 1 S 88 , it was resolved unanimously , and with acclamation , that the members desire to record their grateful thanks to Companion the Reverend Thomas Cartwright Smyth , D . D ., LL . D . ( ist Assistant Sojourner in the Supreme

Grand Chapter of England , their most Excellent First Principal ) , for his able and zealous services during the two successive years in which he has occupied that position , dating from the formation of the chapter , and to express the gratification which they feel at having had as their first

appointed Z . one so eminent in Masonic rank and attainments , and so capable in the performance of every Masonic duty devolving on him officially , or vvhich he has at any time been called upon to undertake . ( Signed ) Thomas Tyers , H . ; W . M . Tyers , J . ; Wm . Flockton , S . E . ; J . Basil Mays , S . N . ; Ed . Crosby , P . S .: and Wm . Bingham , Past P . S . "

With evident feelings of deep emotion Comp , Dr . Smyth thanked the companions for that unexpected indication of goodwill towards him . They had already conferred upon him the greatest honour which lay in the power of a chapter to bestow upon any companion by nominating him as their first Z ., and subsequently electing him to that position for a second year . He could look back upon his 45 years of

Masonic career and recall many dear and may be far distant scenes of earlier labour in the Craft , but memory could never conjure up reminiscences more charming and delightful than those associated with his two years presidency of the chapter . He thanked them from the bottom of his heart for their affectionate and fraternal support , and assured them that to the latest moment of his life he

vvould cherish their testimonial as one of the greatest of his earthly treasures . The exordium having been delivered by Comp . Craig , P . Z . 304 , the business terminated , the companions adjourning to the banquet hall , where they were entertained by the M . E . Z ., Comp . T . Tyers . Comp . Dr . Smyth responded to the toast of "The Grand

Chapter , " and subsequently to that of "The Installing Principal , " both of which had been enthusiastically received by the companions . In proposing the toast of " The M . E . Z and the other Principals , "hepassedhigh encomiums upon the zeal and truly Masonic feeling their newly-installed first Principal and his colleagues had displayed , and

drew a happy augury therefrom for the future . The Principals having responded , several other toasts followed , and were duly honoured , when the evening's proceedings finally closed with mutual expressions of goodwill and sanguine anticipations of a prosperous future for the chapter .

E . Companion , the Rev . Dr . Smyth , G . Chap . Eng ., and 1 st Asst . G . S ., had occupied the chair of Z . from the period of the foundation of the chapter , two years ago , and upon him devolved the pleasing duty and privilege of installing the Principals . He was supported by Comps . T . Tyers , H . ; W . Tyers , J . ; W . Watson , P . Z ., P . A . G . S . ; R . Thompson , P . Z ., P . G . S . B . ; Craig , P . Z ., P . P . A . G . S . ; Hill , P . Z . ;

Yates , Z . ; and Flockton , J ., of 304 ; Bingham , Cowborough , Sutton , Thorp , Mays , Crosby , P . S . ; W . Carter , W . M . 1042 ; J . Rickards , S . E . 304 ; YVatson , acting as D . C . ; and others . The usual business having been transacted , the companions below the rank of Principal were marshalled , and passed round the room saluting their retiring Z . for the
