'The monthly magazines seem affected by that dreadful malady from which wc arc all suffering so intenselyjust now— " Elections on the brain , " and , though not devoid of interest , do not , to our mind , rise above an average level . "Scribner" is remarkable , however , for its illustrations , ancl

its varied and unusually effective articles . It is very good reading . " All the Year Round " is mainly lit up by Bro . Anthony Trollope's well-told story , "The Duke ' s Children . " We cannot say that we like " Set in a Silver Sea . " Perhaps we are fastidious , but the good it can do to any one seems to us problematical "The Antiquary , " No . 4 , upholds its promise of utility

and interest . In "Temple Bar" "Adam ancl Eve" improve , as does "The Rebel of the Family , " and there is an interesting life of William Wilberforce . "Alacmillan" contains a sensational article on the "City Charities , " about whicb a good deal can be said on both sides , but tbe whole tone of the " Alacmillan" is too political for us . Equally our old friend " Blackwood"

cannot be properly criticised in the neutral Freemason , despite "What's in a Name ? " and a " Alemoir of Rajah Brooke , " and " Alabcl ' s Holy Day , " a tnorceaii somewhat sensational for " Blackwood , " no doubt , but which one of our contemporaries , in that ingenious language which electioneering has brought into vogue , denounces as a "peculiarly idiotic piece of verse . " We must leave well alone . We pass over the "Nineteenth Century" and the "

Fortnightly , because they professedly deal with questions and subjects far outside our range as a Alasonic journal , wbich would not be desirable for us to dwell upon , nor prudent , nor possible even , if it were practicable to do so properly . There are many other monthly journals , to which we should be glad to call attention , month by month , if sent to us in time . "Young England" is a new ancl neatly illustrated candidate for popular favour .

Mr . Thomas George . Stevenson , antiquarian publisher , of Edinburgh , will shortly Issue a curious ancl interesting work , entitled " Edinburgh in the Olden Time . " It comprises fac-similes of forty-six original drawings in China ink of some of the most remarkable streets , public buildings , and other remains of antiquity within that city between the years 179 ( 1 and 1 S 2 S . It will form a handsome folio volume , and will be a companion to Drummond ' s "Old Edinburgh . " The impression will be limited to 390

copies . The " Folk Lore of Shakespeare , " by thc Rev . T . F . Thiselton Dyer , ALA ., author of " British Popular Customs" ancl " English Folk Lore , " is the title of a new work which Alessrs . Griffith ancl Farran announce . It will treat of the following subjects among others : 'The life of man , the human body , charms ancl spells , divination and auguries , clays and seasons , weather lore , birds and animals ,

witches , fairies , ghosts and spirits , dreams and superstitions . A manuscri pt Rsrillcr has just been discovered at Freiburg , in tile Grand Duchy of Haden , which nrcli : _ ological experts assign to the second half of the eighth century . It presents all the characteristics of tlie later Merovingian and early Carlovinginn period , and is presumed to have been originally the property of some monastery on the left bank of the Rhine .

A Dutch Burgomaster has enriched the archives of Holland with the original order from thc States General to thc Dutch Commander van Ghent , " to sail up thc river of Rochester , thence with all speed to the Bay of Chatham , in order to execute ancl effectuate thc attack , fight , taking , burning , or ruining of the warships of the King of Great Britain . "

A new edition of the " Eikon Basilikc is announced by Elliot Stock , reprinted from thc edition of 1 G 4 S , with a fac-simile of the frontispiece found only in Dugard ' s copies , giving an explanation of the emblem . Air . Edward Scott introduces this edition with an extended preface , bringing fresh evidence in favour of the Royal authorship of the work .

The Rev . J . Stevenson is preparing for publication a memoirbyNau , the Secretary of Alary Queen of Scots . It may be regarded ascontaining in substance the Queen ' s account of her life , and especially of those parts which have been the subject of so much controversy . Mr . Holman Hunt has promised thc Society of Arts a paper on thc " Alaterials Used by Artists in the Present Day as compared with those Employed by the Old Alaster . "

Upwards of a thousand ori g inal documents , some dating back to thc thirteenth century , have been discovered at Wells , Somerset . Alany of thc seals are in a good state of preservation . They were found in an old oaken press in the almshouses .

One of thc greatest art sales that the world has ever known commenced on the 15 th Alarch at Florence , at Prince Demidoff ' s celebrated Palace of San Donato . In the various galleries every school of painting is represented —many schools by chefs d ' ceuvre , many more by very remarkable works . Besides pictures by the first masters , the sale comprises sundry articles of household furniture ,

vases , Gobelins and Flemish tapesty , candelabra , sculpture , ecclesiastical art needlework , a very costly assemblage of ancient art work in the precious metals , old Japanese ancl Chinese porcelain , vases , and wood carvings ' This sale , which will extend through April and Alay , is likely to prove as interesting to the art and literary world as did the famous sale of Horace Walpole ' s effects af Strawberry Hill .

Thc Academy says that it has always been asserted that Capell , in 17 G 0 , was thc first man to attribute the play of " Edward the Third" to Shakespeare ; but nearly a hundred years earlier Air . " to him , yet thc fact that Goff preceded Capell in so assigning it should be known . Neither Goff nor Kirkman , tbe better cataloguer who soon followed him , attributes " Arden of Fcvershain " to Shakespeare .

The new series of excavations in Olympia seems likely to reward the German Commission , though the work has been much interrupted by rain . Among other objects discovered are numerous fragments hitherto missing in the metope reliefs , a deeply-carved stone representing a lion , the first specimen of tlie kind hitherto found ; further , a head of the younger Faustina , which fits a torso unearthed

some time ago . Among the foundations of the I emple of Hera have been dug up a large number of very votive offerings in bronze and terra-cotta . On the western side of the Altis a gateway leading to the north has been brought to light , anel numerous remains of buildings have been laid bare near the Byzantine church . Hitherto scarcely any traces have been discovered of the great altar

of Zeus , wliich formed the central point in thc ancient ceremonies at Olympia . Remains of the sacrificial ashes and some votive offerings connected with them had , indeed , been found , but the altar itself was missing , and it was concluded that it had becn destroyed' by fanatics . Contrary to expectation , however , the round stone foundations of the great sacrificial altar have at length been brought to

light . As the tomb of Pclops , with its vestibule , has also been found , we are [ now able to lay clown the grouni } plan of Olympia , with mathematical certainty . Another discovery of great importance recentl y made is an inscription , a rhetra or table of laws in the Ehc dialect . With respect to the work of the German Commission it is announced with regret that , owing to instructions from Berlin , half the labourers employed in the works have been dismissed , and

the labours of the German Commission will be soon brought to a close . The latest official communications from Olympia describe the latest discoveries as follows : To the south-west of thc Aletroon were found the great altar of Zeus , forming an eclipse of 44 metres in circumference . In addition , there have been found a head of Augustus , a bronze plate with an Elic inscription , ancl an important fragment belonging to the Nike of Paionios .

Mr . D . Tallerman , writing from Upper Thamesstreet to the Times on the subject of Australian fresh meat , says that "in addition to the Strathleven shipment of 34 tons of fresh meat from Australia , thc other trans-tropical shipments have been—one in 1 S 77 of 100 tons of beef and

mutton by the Frigorifiqne from South America to Rouen , one in 1 S 7 S by the Paraguay from South America to Havre , and a second by the * same vessel , consisting of 10 , 000 sheep , which arrived at Havre last month . These shipments all arrived in good order ancl condition . "
