Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

my memory as many parts of the ritual itself . I cannot but think it will be found to be to the advantage of this lodge to have a custom or tradition that future members will look back upon with pride , when time has invested it with interest , and proud associations are linked with its memory . For myself , I have a profound veneration for that which is old and ancient , whether it be in the more

material relics of age , or in the abstract antiquity of a custom , and a lodge which can produce an unbroken record of such an Institution as this develops a prestige that cannot fail to have a good effect on its members nnd make them feel proud of their lodge . You have laboured and I have laboured for what each considered the best interests of this lodge , and we are endeavouring to raise it

to a position that every member shall feel it an honour to belong to it . What I do may be but little , what you do may be but little ; but if all do but a little 1 feel assured the career of Chine Lodge will be a prosperous one . Possibly some of you may think this little that I am attempting to do is marking out for this lodge a novel and unique position . I grant that it is as far as the Isle of Wight is

concerned , but this is a custom that is to be found in some of the London lodges . I trust , brethren , that this cup will be passed round at the initiation banquet over many whom we shall be proud to welcome as members . It will certainly be presently passed round at the banquet for the first time to drink to the health of one whom I have felt proud to initiate into this lodge , and of whom I shall speak later on .

I hope when this custom is established it will never be allowed to drop , but that the brethren will have sufficient veneration for it to continue it , and whatever may be the principles of the members in the distant future , I trust they will fill it with ginger ale , if they have conscientious scruples of putting anything stronger into it . I will conclude these few remarks with a memorable yet beautiful

qnotation from a speech Professor Tyndall once made , and say , I hope the custom will be carried out in Chine Lodge " when you and I , like streaks of morning cloud , have melted into the infinite azure of the past . " This sentiment evoked loud applause from the brethren . The loving cup was manufactured by Bro . Geo . Kenning ; it had three handles , and was ornamented with Masonic

emblems engraven on it , and was much admired by the brethren . Engraven on it were these words : " The Chine Lodge Loving Cup , presented to the Chine Lodge by Bro . Alfred Greenham , W . M ., March 25 th , 1 SS 6 . " Bro . Francis Newman , P . M ., rose to propose a vote of thanks to the W . M . [ with very much pleasure . It was indeed a very handsome present , and one which every

member of the lodge would appreciate . It showed the thoughtfulness of the W . M ., and the interest he took in the lodge to initiate the custom , which he quite approved of , and which he believed would have a good effect in the lodge . It was , as the W . M . observed , a novelty for the Isle of Wight , as no other lodge in it had such a custom ; yet as time went on he felt sure the custom would be

retained , and demonstrate the thoughtful care the W . M . had in introducing it into the lodge . Bro . Francis Cooper , P . M ., Treas ., and P . G . S ., seconded the vote of thanks . He was quite sure every one witnessed the zeal their W . M . was showing for the Chine Lodge with admiration ; his interest in the lodge and his endeavours to promote its prosperity , he could almost say seemed to have

no bounds . Last lodge he made a presentation which not only pleased , but startled the members , when it was found to be the old Bye Laws with the P . G . Master's signature confirming them , which had been lost many years ; and now , that night , he presented them with a loving cup , the value of which he _ know must be considerable . Words failed him to express his pleasure at the zeal he was showing for

Masonry generally , and especially the interesthe was taking in this lodge . _ The Worshipful Master having thanked the brethren for their hearty vote of thanks , said it gave him much pleasure to find his proposed custom was appreciated by all the brethren . Bro . A . H . Brown then rose and presented the lodge with two handsome paintings and two ornamental jars . The

paintings were done by his daughter , and illuminated with appropriate quotations from the charge given to the Initiate . The W . M . said : It is with considerable pleasure that I propose a vote of thanks to Bro . Brown for his kind gifts . I am quite sure when thebrethren examine them they will not only appreciate and value them , but think

that talent and ger . ius have been shown by Bro . Brown's daughter . They will ornament our lodge room and serve at the same time to inculcate the useful lessons of Benevolence and Charity . At the last lodge 1 made a speech and told the brethren the more they could adorn the lodge with objects of Masonic art , the more they would weave round it a feeling of pride and honour . A few days after , Bro .

Brown intimated his intention of presenting these paintings . Brethren , that is the first speech of mine which has produced such ready and good fruits , and will encourage me on some future occasion to make another . I know that considerable time and labour have been expended over them , and I trust Bro . Brown will convey to his daughter our sincere appreciation of her talents used for the benefit

of Chine Lodge . Bro . A . F . Swayne , J . D ., seconded the vote of thanks , and spoke in high terms of the talents displayed , and hoped the present of the jars would not inaugurate family jars with the lodge . Bro . Brown responded , and the lodge adjourned to partake of a banquet , when the usual loyal toasts were given . Previous to the loving cup being passed round , theW . M .,

Bro . Alfred Greenham , proposed "The Health of the Initiate , Bro . Herbert Ambrose Matthews . " He said , today , I felt a great pleasure in having initiated one whom I might call the friend of my youth , one whom 1 have known for so many years , and whose associations with me have not always been of so solemn a character as to-day , and yet we have preserved an unbroken continuity of friendship ,

such friendship as a few of us have formed in Sea View , arcclannish in theircharacter , and exclusive in theirpractice , and , brethren , if I can leave this lodge with a few of my personal friends from my old home , it will indeed make our monthly meetings pleasurable to me , while you I am quite sure will find them excellent members . The health of the Initiate was then drunk with great enthusiasm .
