MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The Masonic Temple , Drury-lane , was again the scene of a notable meeting on Tuesday , when upwards of sixty brethren , including several Past and Present Grand Officers , and many other well-known interpreters of our mysteries were present , the guiding spirit ot the proceedings being Bro . J . C . Parkinson , P . G . D ., who occupied the chair , and very impressively carried out the

ceremony of initiating four candidates into the mysteries of the First Degree , and raising three others to the Sublime Degree of M . M . Bro . Parkinson was assisted in his labours by Bros . T . Fenn , C . F . Matier , R . Berridge , and other brethren , and the proceedings passed off most satisfactorily .

The Saturday Collection , made by means of the Hospital Saturday Organisation , for the relief of distress among the Unemployed , realised about £ uooto £ 1200 . Bro . W . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., took an active part as Steward in the Belvoir Hunt Steeple Chases , and very much contributed to their success .

R . VV . Bro . Charles Dalrymple , P . G . M . of Argleshire and the Isles , is a candidate for one of the vacant seats in Parliament for the borough of Ipswich . Bro . Augustus Harris , who is president-elect of the Royal General Theatrical Fund , will take the chair at the annual festival to be held at the Freemasons' Tavern , on the 2 nd June next .

Bro . Henry Irving- will preside at the 30 th annual dinner , to be held at Willis ' s Rooms , on Monday , the 19 th inst ., of the Benevolent Branch of the Dramatic and Musical Sick Fund .

Bro . Lord Claud Hamilton presided at the first sitting on Tuesday , of the House of Commons Committee on the Lambeth . Southwark and Vauxhall , and the East London Water Bills . Bro . the Lord Mayor will give a grand military banquet at the Mansion House on Saturday next , the 17 th inst . Bro . General Lord Wolseley has accepted an

invitation to be present . Among those present at the Lady Mayoress ' s reception at the Mansion House on Tuesday were Bro . Sheriff and Mrs . Clarke , Bro . Horace Jones , G . S . of Wks ., and Mrs . Horace Jones , and others . Bro . Lord Henniker presided at conference at the Cannon Street Hotel , on Monday , called by the

Railway and Canal Trades' Association for the purpose of considering the Railway and Canal Traffic Bill , introduced by Mr . Mundella . In our late report of the consecration of the Henley Chapter , at North Woolwich , the name of M . E . Comp . E . West , P . Z . 13 , was inadvertantly omitted from the list of the founders . He is not only a founder , but the first P . Z . of the Chapter .

Bro . Buzzard , CJ . C , was one of the principal guests at the dinner given at the Albion Tavern , Aldersgatestreet , on Saturday last hy the members of the Midland Circuit to Mr . J . W . Mellor , Q . C ., M . P ., on his appointment as Judge Advocite-General .

Bro . the Lord Mayor ( in the chair ) , and Aldermen Stone , Sir H . E . Knight , Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., Sir R . Hanson , Waterlow , Whitehead , Savory , and Gray , with Alderman and Sheriff Evans and Sheriff Clarke , attended the special Court of Aldermen , held at the Guildhall on Tuesday .

T he remains of our late Bro . the Rev . A . C . Graystone , M . A ., of Lancaster-gate and Tankerton Towers , VVhitstable , were interred in the family vault at Whitstable on Saturday last , there being present to show their respect for the deceased a large gathering of friends , tenants and brethren .

St . Patrick ' s Lodge , No . 4 6 s , Irish Constitution , held a Lodge of Sorrow on the 27 th January last at the Masonic Hall , Dunedin , New Zealand , for the purpose of showing their respect for the late Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , Grand Master of Ireland . The ceremonial , as arranged , would appear to have been appropriate to so mourniul an occasion .

We have much pleasure in congratulating Bro . W . S . Dunkley , W . M . No . 1777 , on the latest success achieved by his talented son Ferdinand L . Dunkley , to whom a short time since was awarded the Scholarship for Composition at the Royal College of Music . It is clear that Bro . Dunkley ' s son , who is still in his "teens , " gives promise of much excellence as a musician .

A festival was held on Tuesday , the 30 th ult ., in connection with Lodge Duncarn , No . 400 on the roll of Scotland . Tea having been served at 7 p . m ., several interesting addresses were delivered b y Bros , the Rev . J . Wilson Perth , Rev . J . S . Finlayson , the Rev . T . li . Kilpatrick , and others , these being followed by a capital programme of vocal and instrumental music , which afforded great pleasure to all who had the privilege of being present .

An admirable idea has recentl y been propounded in connection with our Lifeboat Service , which we trust it will be found possible to carry out . It is proposed to build a numberof boats of greater tonnage than those now in use , which shall always be afloat and have cooking and sleeping conveniences on board whenever practicable , steam-power will also be used , and further , the boats will be equipped with fishing gear or carry pilots , so that they will be able to

earn their own maintenance , and at the same lime provide constant employment for the men on board . Mr . John White , of Cowes , has offered to build such boats of 40 tons at £ 500 each , and a public fund has already been opened with a viewto raising asum say of £ 10 , 000 , so that astart

may be made with twenty boats at different parts of our coasts . We wish the scheme success . While any of our rraders who may wish to lend it a helping hand should place themselves in communication with Mr . F . Bro . Sir John Bennett has undertaken to give a lecture at Pulborough , on Tuesday next , the 13 th inst ., on "The Watch—its Construction , and Mode of Manufacture . " Bro . Col . Peters , P . G . S . B ., was one of the guests at the sixth dinner and concert of the / Eolian Club , held at

the Falstaff , Eastcheap , on Monday evening . Bro . the Ri g ht Hon . G . J . Shaw-Lefevre ( Chairman ) , and Sir J . E . Gorst , Q . C ., M . P ., took part in the meeting on Tuesday , of the Royal Commission on Loss of Life at Sea .

Bro . Sir R . Watkin , Bart ., M . P ., presided at a large meeting of the proprietors of the South Eastern Railway Company , which was held at the Cannon-street Hotel on Thursday , the 1 st inst . Bro . Sir James McGarel Hogg , Bart ., M . P ., was one of the chief mourners at the funeral of the late Lord Penrhyn , which took place in Llandegai Church , near Bangor , on Tuesday .

Bros . Lord Herschell , Lord Chancellor , Earl Granville , and the Right Hon . Hugh C . E . Childers , were present at a Cabinet Council , held at the Premier ' s official residence in Downing-street , on Thursday , the 1 st inst . Bro . G . VV . Moore , of the Moore and Burgess Minstrels , St . James ' s Hall , was to take his annual benefit on Thursday afternoon and evening , a special programme of a very attractive character being provided for the

occasion . Bro . the Jiarl of Ravensworth will preside at the meetings to be held on Wednesday , Thursday , and Friday next , the 14 th , 15 th , and 16 th inst . respectively , in the Hall of the Society of Arts , John Street , Adelphi , of the Institution of Naval Architects .

At the last regular monthl y meeting of the De Moulham Lodge , No . 114 I ) , Swanage , it was announced that the necessary sum had been subscribed by the members in order to constitute the lodge a Vice-President of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . We have been requested to announce that the installation of Principals' ceremonies will be rehearsed at

the Metropolitan Chapter of Improvement , No . 975 , White Hart , corner of Abchurch-Iane and Cannon-street , on Tuesday next , the 13 th inst ., at 5 . 30 p . m . A ball was held in the Grand Jury Room of the old County Antrim Courthouse , Carrickfergus , on the 24 th ult ., in connection with the Carrickfergus Lodge , No . 43 . There was a numerous attendance and an excellent supper ,

Chapter of Tennessee , Bro . T . O . Morris was elected G . Master , and Comp . Bradford Nicholls , G . H . P ., Bro . Frizzell being G . Secretary of both bodies , as well as G . Recorder of the G . Council Cryptic Rite . At the annual meeting of the Crook Lodge , No . 2019 , Crook , on the 24 th ult ., Bro . Thomas Hardy was

installed W . M . by his predecessor in office , Bro . W . Love , in the presence of a numerous gathering of brethren , amongst whom was Bro . S . Holdsworth , P . M ., Mayor of Durham . The funeral of Bro . William Smith , of the firm of Chappell and Co ., took place at the Kensa ! Green Cemetery on Thursday , the 1 st inst ., the earlier portion of the service havingbeen held in Portman Chapel , of which our deceased brother had been organist for 34 years . The widow and children were the principal mourners , and there were likewise present Bros . Santley , W . Ganz , P . G . Organist , a

large number of personal friends , and a deputation from the Orpheus Lodge , No . 17 . TheSrjth annual convocation of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New York took place at Albany on the 2 nd and 3 rd February last , under the presidency of M . E . Comp . James E . Morrison , G . H . P . In the course of the

Bro . the Karl of Dalhousie , Secretary for Scotland , was sworn in a member of the Privy Council at a meeting , held by the Queen at Windsor Castle , on Saturday last . We have much pleasure in stating that Bro . E . Farwig , P . M . 1 S 0 , the well-known and esteemed Preceptor , is making satislactory progress towards recovery from his late severe illness .

Bro . Sir JJaniel Gooch , Bart ., Chairman of the Great Western Railway , presided at a large meeting , at Paddington Station on Monday , of the Shareholders of the Company . Bro . Col . Howard Vincent , C . B ., M . P ., has consented to occupy the chair at the 23 rd annual dinner of the United Waiters' Benevolent Association , which will take place to-day ( Friday ) , at the Holborn Restaurant .

I he ceremony ot installation was worked b y Bro . Pringle , W . M . 7 S 1 , in the Prince Leopold Lodge of Instruction , No . 1445 , at Bro . W . H . Myers ' s Printing Works , 202 , Whitechapel-road , on Monday , the 5 th inst . Bro . Lord Randol ph Churchill , M . P ., and Sir F . Milner , Bart ., were among the mourners present at the funeral at Bayham , Sussex , on Saturday last , of the Marchioness of Camden , who died at Cannes on the 27 th ult .

The Newcastle Weekly Chronicle of the 27 th ult .. contained ) a very interesting note , signed " P . P . J . G . W . York , " on the subject of the "Antiquity of Masonry , " in which the writer sets forth what he conceives to be the claim of the Craft to a venerable antiquity . Bro . the Bishop of Peterborough officiated at Divine Service in the Queen ' s private chapel , Windsor

Castle , on Sunday last , her Majesty and the Royal Family , with the members of the household , being present . His lordship afterwards preached the sermon . At the banquet of the Brixton Lodge , on Saturday last , Bro . H . Lovegrove called attention to the fact that the three Past Masters of the lodge , then present , were serving as W . M . of their respective mother lodges , and had been installed in the same order as in the Brixton

Lodge . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at the great meeting held at the Guildhall , on Friday , the 2 nd inst ., against the proposal to establish a separate Parliament in Dublin , among the principal citizens present being Bros . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., Sir J . Whittaker Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., Sir H . E . Knight , and Gray , Alderman and Sheriff Evans , and R . B . Martin .

Mr . Deneulain , the well-known photographic artist , of 147 , Strand , has sent me an excellent portrait of Bro . Edward Swanborough , who has been taken with his Freemason ' s honours thick upon him . Edward is of the Lodge of Asaph , where he has graduated ; and now , although in the morning of life , he rejoices in the grade of P . M . —Entr ' acte .

A meeting of the Royal Botanic Society of London was held on Saturday , Sir Walter Stirling in the chair . Upon the table were specimens of the Qucrcus coccifera " Kermes oak , " grown in the gardens . The Secretary said that from this oak , when punctured by an insect ( coccus ) , was produced a scarlet dye which had been celebrated from the most remote times , and was said to be

used by Moses to dye the hangings of the Tabernacle . Bro . Sheriff Clarke presided on Wednesday , the 31 st ult ., at the formal completion of Messrs . Welford and Son ' s , Scientific and Hygienic Dairy , Elgin-road , Maida Vale , the event being signalised by the laying of a commemoration stone , in which Bro . Clark , who was supported by a numerous and influential gathering , played the

leading part . At the conclusion of the ceremony , the company sat down to luncheon , when opportunity was taken to congratulate the Messrs . Welford on the success of their enterprise , and the hoped was expressed that it would prove so successful as it deserves . The programme included the comedietta " Advice Gratis " and the amusing farce of "Two Heads are better than

One , " the characters being sustained by Bros . V . Fowler , P . M . ; Digby H . Thompson , VV . C . Grayson , R . F . Banks , and T . R . W . Parnell . Miss Weber , of London , and Mr , J . C . Wigney assisted professionally , and the audience were much gratified with the performance . Bro . W . Ascough , W . M . Denison Lodge , also gave a very effective recitation . Indeed , the

entertainment throughout was excellent , and we understand there will be a good balance in favour of the Charities . The brethren , among whom were Bro . Major J . W . Woodall , Grand Treasurer , appeared in full Masonic clothing and regalia , the necessary dispensation for the purpose having been granted . Bro . T . Bagman had charge of the musical arrangements , the orchestra being composed mostly of brethren .

Bro . the Lord Mayor ( in the chair ) , and Aldermen Stone , Sir H . E . Knight , Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., Sir R . Hanson , Waterlow , Whitehead , Savory , and Gray , with Alderman and Sheriff Evans and Sheriff Clarke , attended the special Court of Aldermen , held at the Guildhall on Tuesday .

T he remains of our late Bro . the Rev . A . C . Graystone , M . A ., of Lancaster-gate and Tankerton Towers , VVhitstable , were interred in the family vault at Whitstable on Saturday last , there being present to show their respect for the deceased a large gathering of friends , tenants and brethren .

St . Patrick ' s Lodge , No . 4 6 s , Irish Constitution , held a Lodge of Sorrow on the 27 th January last at the Masonic Hall , Dunedin , New Zealand , for the purpose of showing their respect for the late Bro . the Duke of Abercorn , Grand Master of Ireland . The ceremonial , as arranged , would appear to have been appropriate to so mourniul an occasion .

We have much pleasure in congratulating Bro . W . S . Dunkley , W . M . No . 1777 , on the latest success achieved by his talented son Ferdinand L . Dunkley , to whom a short time since was awarded the Scholarship for Composition at the Royal College of Music . It is clear that Bro . Dunkley ' s son , who is still in his "teens , " gives promise of much excellence as a musician .

A festival was held on Tuesday , the 30 th ult ., in connection with Lodge Duncarn , No . 400 on the roll of Scotland . Tea having been served at 7 p . m ., several interesting addresses were delivered b y Bros , the Rev . J . Wilson Perth , Rev . J . S . Finlayson , the Rev . T . li . Kilpatrick , and others , these being followed by a capital programme of vocal and instrumental music , which afforded great pleasure to all who had the privilege of being present .

An admirable idea has recentl y been propounded in connection with our Lifeboat Service , which we trust it will be found possible to carry out . It is proposed to build a numberof boats of greater tonnage than those now in use , which shall always be afloat and have cooking and sleeping conveniences on board whenever practicable , steam-power will also be used , and further , the boats will be equipped with fishing gear or carry pilots , so that they will be able to

earn their own maintenance , and at the same lime provide constant employment for the men on board . Mr . John White , of Cowes , has offered to build such boats of 40 tons at £ 500 each , and a public fund has already been opened with a viewto raising asum say of £ 10 , 000 , so that astart

may be made with twenty boats at different parts of our coasts . We wish the scheme success . A meeting of the Royal Botanic Society of London was held on Saturday , Sir Walter Stirling in the chair . Upon the table were specimens of the Qucrcus coccifera " Kermes oak , " grown in the gardens . The Secretary said that from this oak , when punctured by an insect ( coccus ) , was produced a scarlet dye which had been celebrated from the most remote times , and was said to be

used by Moses to dye the hangings of the Tabernacle . Bro . Sheriff Clarke presided on Wednesday , the 31 st ult ., at the formal completion of Messrs . Welford and Son ' s , Scientific and Hygienic Dairy , Elgin-road , Maida Vale , the event being signalised by the laying of a commemoration stone , in which Bro . Bagman had charge of the musical arrangements , the orchestra being composed mostly of brethren .
