Obituary .

THE LATE LORD PLUNKET , ARCHBISHOP OF DUBLIN , GRAND CHAPLAIN OF IRELAND . The funeral of our late distinguished Bro . William Coningham , fourth Baron Flunket , Archbishop of Dublin , and Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Ireland , took place in Mount Jerome Cemetery , Dublin , on Tuesday , the 6 th inst , the earlier portion of the service being held in St . Patrick ' s Cathedral . His Grace's death has caused the deepest regret among people of all classes and creeds throughout Ireland , and rarely has there been such a manifestation of

public grief as was witnessed in the Irish capital in connection with the interment of the mortal remains of the beloved prelate in the family vault in the cemetery just mentioned . Long before the hour appointed for the service in the cathedral , the streets , especially those nearest and leading to the Palace , St . Stephen ' s Green , and the Cathedral were thronged with people all eager to show by their presence the respect and affection in which they held the deceased Archbishop , while along the whole line of route taken by the funeral procession and especially

at the entrance to the cemetery there were throngs of people actuaied by a similar desire . Ail traffic was , of course , suspended in those parts of the city where the crowds were congregated , the blinds in private residences were drawn , places of business were closed and shuttered , and the customary emblems of mourning were very generally worn . The body lay in state in the chapel attached to the Palace , the coffin being almost hidden from view by the many beautiful wreaths received from the family and friends , from the rulers of

the land , from great ecclesiastical and state chiefs and functionaries , from thc heads and representative bodies connected with the Romish and other churches , from all kinds of societies which the late Archbishop had helped to found or foster , or in which he was known to have taken a deep interest . The municipality of Dublin , the Commander of the Forces , the senates of Dublin University , the Bench , and the Bar , were all represented in the Cathedral , and last , but not least , the Masonic body , of which his lordship had been a member for some 34

years . At 9 . 30 a . m . thc body was moved from the chapel to the hearse , and as soon as the procession had been properly marshalled , a move was made for the Cathedral , about 100 members of the Dawson-street Young Men's Christian Association , of which the deceased was patron , followed by members and friends of the Irish Church Missions , and students of Kildare-place Training College leading the way . Representatives of the Presbyterian and Wesleyan Methodist Churches were also there , and about 200 clergy of the Irish Church

preceded the coffin , which was followed by the principal mournersthe Hon . W . Lee Plunket and the Rev . B . T . Plunket ( sons ) , Bro . Lord Rathmore and the Hon . Henry Plunket ( brothers ) , LordsArdilaun and Iveagh , Sir Philip Smyly , Capt . Lee Guinness and Sir Jocelyn Coghill ( brothers-in-law ) , and John Newman ( son-in-law ) . Fully 100 carriages followed , prominent among them being those of Bro . Lord Justice Fitz Gibbon , Justice Madden , the Recorder , and other members of the judicial bench ; those of the bishops of the Irish

Church , those of the Lord Mayor , who was represented by his Secretary , and Archbishop Walsh , whose church was represented by Fathers Finlay and Delany and several laymen . A long time was occupied in reaching the Cathedral , in which were already present her Excellency the Countess Cadogan , who was attended by the Assistant Private Secretary of the Lord-Lieutenant ; the Hon . Gerald Cadogan ; Sir W . Kaye , Private Secretary to Earl Cadogan ; Bro . Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor ) : and Bro . Lord Justice Fitz Gibbon , who occupied

the Viceregal pew . There were also present the Hon . W . Roberts , representing Bro . Lord Roberts , V . C , Commander of the Forces ; Viscount Frankfort de Montmorency , commanding the Dublin Garrison ; Col . Kelly , representing the District Staff and other officers ; while among the members of our Order , who were numerously represented and appeared in their full clothing , with their jewels , rosettes , & c , craped , were Bros . Sir John Banks , K . C . B . ; Dr . J . Creed Meredith , the Rev . Benjamin Gibson , Dr . W . J . Chetwode Crawley ,

Sir Charles Cameron , Sir Robert Sexton , Sir Henry Cochrane , Col . Sir Fenton Hort , Bart ., together with many members , including Bros . Sir Robert -Forster , and Theophilus E . St . George , of the Shakespeare Lodge , No . 143 , Dublin , of which the late Archbishop was a member . There were also members of the Corporation of Dublin , of the Senate , of the University , & c , & c , the ceremony being of a most impressive character . Alter the Archbishop of Armagh , Primate , had delivered an appropriate address , the procession was re-formed , and the body conveyed to the cemetery , where the remainder of the service was carried

out . The late Archbishop was initiated in Shakespeare Lodge , No . 143 , Dublin , on the Sth April , 1863 , and was W . M . in 1867 . He was also a Royal Arch Alason , having been exalted in the Grand Master ' s Chapter on the 29 th April , 18 7 6 . He was elected G . Chaplain in 1868 , his colleague in that office being Bro . the Rev . S . G . Morrison , D . D ., an eminent Presbyterian Clergyman . From that year till now our late brother had been annually re-elected , so that he had held that offi : e for upwards of 29 years . The deceased was born 26 th August , 1 S 28 , succeeded to the barony of Plunket in 1871 , became Bishop of Meath in succession to the late Dr . Butcher in 1876 , and Archbishop of Dublin in 1884 .

Air . Thomas Hewitt , in the capacity of Chairman , must have found it a pleasing duty to preside over the 26 th annual meetingof the Corporation with such a budget of good things to place before the shareholders . That the Corporation is a thriving concern and that the directors are determined not to halt on the wayside is conclusively proved by the felicitations promulgated at the annual meeting , and particularly in view of the largely-enhanced financial position of the Association , and these considerations

are the more pleasing because there are indications of early and formidable developments . A glance at the figures show that thc gross revenue of the Corporation amounts to £ 256 , 649 , which is an improvemmt by £ 55 , 000 on the preceding year , Tho premiums on new proposals amounted in the year to £ 100 , 296 , as against £ 88 , 932 for the year 1 S 95 . Investments realised £ 11 , 121 , as agiinst ^ yooo . The claims paid

during the year amounted to £ 113 , 048 , and after debiting all charges and expenses a balance of £ 50 , 940 , against , ( , 40 , 118 , which is carried to the balance of revenue and suspense account , swelling _ that reserve to £ 101 , 414 , which , with the reserve fund , now totals £ 201 , 414 , against £ 162 , 973 at the end of 1 S 95 . These improvements have justified the handsome dividend of 15 per cent ., the sum under the same heading in the corresponding period being 12 J per cent . > +

OCEAN ACCIDENT AND GUARANTEE CORPORATION .

How THE ENGLISH TOURIST PAYS . — "Thc other day I happened to be shopping in Port Said , " said a writer in the April number of the Windsor Magazine , " when % P . and O . steamer , homeward bound , was in the port . I inquired the price of his articles of a turbaned vendor of photos—one Ali Hassan . —' . One shillin' each , sir , ' said the smiling Oriental . 'Very good photograph—one shillin ' . ' —Then I ventured to express my opinion in Arabic touching these pictures , knowing they were about

fivepence each . — ' Very good , sir , ' how many you take ? Two piastres each . I not know you Irom P . and O . passenger ! ' —There was at Suez a very intimate friend of mine , a donkey boy . One evening he came to me , his face beaming , to recount his day ' s experiences . — ' Sir , ' he said , ' you see that trooper lying at the docks : To-day I take out three oflicers an' one lady—very fine English lady—p ' raps two hours round thc canal , that ' s all , and they give me 15 shillin' !
