Grand Lodge Of Mark Master Masons.

Grand Master was , I believe , a member , and which bears the honoured name of his distinguished father , I feel it a very great privilege to be permitted to second the presentation of this portrait to Grand Lodge , and in supporting the remarks of the brother who has just spoken , and who represents the Grafton Craft Lodge . I sincerely echo his wish that the Right Worship ful Deputy Grand Master may be spared to this Grand Lodge

many years to come , and that when we , like our fathers shall be no longer in this hall , those who come after us may be able to look on that picture and say that Lord Euston was one of those Mark Masons who have graced the Order . I have little more to add to these remarks , but I may say I heartily hope that our Right Worshi pful Deputy Grand Master may be spared many more years of usefulness to aid and encourage this Degree which he loves so well .

The Marquess of HERTFORD : Brethren , —I feel certain I may speak in thc name of the whole of Grand Mark Lodge when I say we most thankfully and gladly receive the gift that has been so kindly made by the Craft , the p icture of our R . W . Deputy Grand Master . Thc picture , I am glad to see , is already in its place , and as far as I can judge in the li ght from which I see it it appears to be a very excellent likeness . Perhaps I may be allowed

cordially to endorse all that has been said by the two brethren who have spoken about Bro . Lord Euston , as I feel certain we all look upon him as one of the best , if not the best , Mark Mason living . ( Cheers ) . The Marquess of HERTFORD then declared H . R . H . the Prince of Wales duly reinstalled as M . W . Grand Master , and as such he was proclaimed by Bro . Robert Berridge .

The Marquess of HERTFORD afterwards announced that the Prince of Wales had appointed the Earl of Euston as Pro Grand Master . ( Applause ) . The Earl of EUSTON was then obligated as the Pro Grand Master , invested , and placed in the Grand Master ' s chair . Having taken his seat his lordship said : Brethren , —I thank you very heartily for your applause . lean assure you his Royal Highness has conferred upon me one of the hig hest honours I could possibly attain to . One of the first duties I have

to perform is that of presenting on behalf of Grand Mark Lodge the collar and jewel of a Past Pro Grand Master to the Marquess of Hertford , who has performed the duties of Pro Grand Master for the last three years . Addressing the Marquess of Hertford his lordship said : Lord Hertford , I have the greatest pleasure on behalf of the Grand Lodge in placing this collar round your neck as Past Pro Grand Master , and I am quite certain that as you love the Order very much you will do all you can to assist the Grand Master .

The Marquess of HERTFORD said : Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master and Brethren , —I assure you I very highly esteem the great honour that has been bestowed on me in presenting me with this collar and jewel . The gift will always serve to remind me of three extremel y happy years I have spent among you while I had the honour of occupying the high position of Pro Grand Master . I must apologise to all my brethren for many shortcomings

on my part . I have not been always able to attend to my duties ; but I can assure you I have always done so when it has been possible . In coming out of the chair to-day I am not going out of this Grand Lodge , because I hope to be present on many occasions in future to enjoy the pleasant work of Mark Masonry among all the brethren who have always treated me so kindly . * The Consecrating Officer having taken his chair , ancl appointed his officers pro tem ., the lodge was opened in the Three Degrees . The Prov . Grand Master was saluted in due form , and an opening hymn was sung . The CONSECRATING OFFICER then stated that they had assembled to consecrate and constitute a new lodge , and called upon the Prov . G . Secretary to state the wishes of tbe brethren .

The founders signified approval of the officers named in the petition and warrant , and an oration on the nature and principles of the Order was delivered by Bro . Rev . E . G . HOUNDLE , P . P . G . C . The ceremony was then proceeded with in the usual form , and thc new lodge was solemnly dedicated and constituted .

Bro . J . D . Langton , P . P . J . G . W ., was installed as W . M . by the Prov . Grand Master , and appointed and invested the following officers : Bros . C . O . Burgess , S . W . ; J . R . The WORSHIPFUL MASTER proposed a cordial vote of thanks to the Consecrating Officers . He said thc Provincial Grand Master had attended at some inconvenience , and as hc had to leave before the banquet , the brethren would heartily thank him for performing the ceremony , and also thank those who assisted him .

The S . W . seconded the proposition , which was heartily carried . The PROVINCIAL GRAND MASTER thanked them very heartil y for thc kind expression of their feelings towards himself and the other ollicers who had assisted him in consecrating that lodge . It was at all times a pleasure to preside at the consecration of a new lodge in the province , and more especially onc which bore such good promise for a successful future . He was sure the words in the consecration in sprinkling thc corn and salt on

that lodge would be fully verified and completely fulfilled . He had heard it said sometimes that lodges in provinces consisting of London Masons did not feel called upon to support the Charities in the province , but hc was sure that new lodge , where Bro . Langton was the first W . M ., promised something very diiferent . Not only in his own person , but also any lodge with whicli the VV . M . was connected was sure to be prominent in any good work of the kind . He ( thc Prov . G . M . ) thanked them very heartily , and wished the lodge and its W . M . " God-speed . "

The WORSHIPFUL MASTER presented thc Prov . Grand Master with a founder ' s jewel , which was accepted as an interesting memento of a pleasant occasion . On the motion of thc VV . M ., seconded by the S . VV ., thc Consecrating Officers were elected honorary members .

The next business being the election of a representative of the Provincial Charity Committee , the W . M . pointed out that it was open to every lodge to adopt the resolutions of that Committee and send a representative . The object was to form a Charity fund and assist in the election of candidates to the Masonic Institutions from the Province of Surrey . He , therefore , proposed that Bro . Burgess , S . W ., should be elected as tbe representative of their lodge .

The motion was carried unanimously , and a Committee was elected to frame the by-laws . Thc lodge was closed , and an excellent banquet was subsequently served in first class style by the host , Bro . Mayo . "The Queen and the Craft" and "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " were the first toasts honoured .

The VVORSHIPFUL MASTER next gave " Thc Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and said there werc several who had honoured them with their presence , and whom they thanked for assisting them that day . All these brethren were well known to them , and he hoped they would hnd time in the future to again visit the lodge .

Bro . Rev . J . S . BROWNRIGG , P . G . Chap ., said there were so many pleasant recolleciions of the past connected with the Province of Surrey , and so many pleasant recollections in the present , that hc could only make his response to the toast a personal one . He never | felt a stranger or a visitor in Surrey , and it was always a pleasure to see the old province going forward in so excellent a manner , and to see so many old friends who were also glad to see him .

" lhe R . W . Prov . G . M ., Deputy Prov . G . M ., and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present ancl Past , " was next proposed by the VV . M ., who said they all regretted that the Provincial Grand Master had had to leave them . They , however , had with them the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and many members of the Provincial Grand i . odge . lt appeared that that

was the 3 8 th lodge in the Province of Surrey , which had greatl y grown since Colonel Money was installed as Provincial Grand Master two years ago . In the year 1837 when the lirst meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge was held there were only five lodges , and now they had 3 8 lodges and the chapters had grown 111 proportion .
