Among the correspondence read by the Secretary was a letter from H . R . H ., the M . VV . G . Master , thanking the lodge for the gift of the last volume of the Transactions of the Lodge ; and letters from Bros . Sir Chas . Warren and Admiral Markham excusing th : ir non-attendance on the ground of duty . Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., read a paper on "The Three Degrees of Masonry , especially in relation to the oldest known Records of the Master Mason ' s Ceremony . " The paper , which was written with our brother ' s usual lucidity , was a resume of
arguments previously put forward by him to show that before 1717-1723 there could not have been more than one ceremony or Degree in use , and it further gave particulars of the minutes of a lodge in Finch-lane of 1727 , containing the first known references in lodge minutes to the working of the Third Degree . From the subsequent discussion , however , it would appear that Bro . Hughan fail : d to carry conviction to the minds of his hearers , for Bros . Gould , Chetwode Crawley , and Speth all spoke at length in
opposition to his contention , the lat-er promising to place before the lodge at some future and not too distant date a paper embodying his views as to the antiquity of our ceremonial . The paper was none the less , as they all agreed , a most useful and interesting one , and a vote of thanks to the learned brother was cordially moved and seconded by Bros . Gould and Chetwode Crawley , and enthusiastically carried . Bro , Hamon Le Strange , Past Grand Deacon of England and Dep . Prov . G . M . of Norfolk , ' was proposed as a joining member of tfie lodge . The brethren then adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant for dinner .

King , Brent Goode , Surgeon-Major Roberts , P . P . G . W . Middx ., Crane , jun ., and Capt . A . Wood Martyn . An excellent musical programme , under the direction of Bros . Anthony Burther , 2296 . Messrs . Edward Chisnall , G . H . Daw , and H . VV . Bundy were initiated by the W . M ., who afterwards gave the ancient charge . The VV . M . also pas-. ej to the Second
Degree Bros . VV . Oatley , P . VV . Greenaway , and E . O . Ardley , whj als > received from the W . M . the charge and the lecture on the tracing board . All the work was beautifully performed . Bro . T . A . Bullock , J . VV ., then rose , and said the brethren would remember that when the lodge was consecrated , the VV . M . and other brethren made many presents to the lodge of lodge furniture , and thesj pressnts ware so numerous that it was thought there was no room for any more gifts to be presented , Bat t ' u keen eye of Bro . Pridmore , S . D ., discovered that there wis somsthing else which the lodfe
required , and that brother had taken upon himself to supply the deficiency . If the brethren looked on the table occupied by the Treasurer and the Secretary , they would see a ban Isome ballot-box and a Charity column , which up to this meeting the lodge had not possessed . These were the gift of the S . D ., and the tnanks of the lo Jjfe ware due to him for the presentation . He , therefore , prop . ised thatsuch avote of thinks should be passed , and inscribed on the lodge minutes . The W . proposed , and Bro . Pridmore , S . D ., seconded , that the sun of one guinea be given from the lodge funds to the Guy ' s Hospital Endowment Fund , and this motion was alsi cirried . The W . M . reminded the brethren that for some time past the Chaplain of the loige , Bro . the Rev . P . Cleinenti-Smith , had been seriously ill , and was unable to attend the lodge meetings . He was happy to say , however , that their reverend brother was better now , and was so far recovered that they might hope to see him among them again shortly .
The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to a choice banquet , and subsequently honoured the usual toasts . Several brethren of the lodge and Bro . Olver and Miss Briggs entertained the company with some excellent singing . Bro . Tollworthy , W . M ., in giving the toast of " The Omen and the Craft "—the announcement of which was received with loud applause—said he never heard the
Queen ' s name received in a more enthusiastic manner than at the present time , and he might say he thought she richly deserved it . Any one who witnessed the procession on Tuesday and saw her Majesty with all her smiles and beams on her fa : e must have seen she felt it was the greatest reward to her for a well-spent life to receive the ovation she did receive from every subject in the country . As regarded Freemasonry , he adopted what Lord Lathom said a few nights ago , that when the Queen ascended the throne , in

The W . VI . seconded the mo : ion , and it was put to the lodge , and carried unanimously . Bro . Johnston , P . M ., Treas ., next
proposed , and Bro .
