MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The regular monthly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution will be held at the I ' reemasons' HaU on Wednesday next , the 14 th instant , at the usual hour of 4 p . m . The monthl y meeting of the General Committee of thc Royal Masonic Institution for Boys was held at Freemasons' Hall on Saturday last , but the proceedings were only nominal , and the Committee adjourned till to-morrow ( Saturday ) , when important business will be transacted .

The musical comedietta , "The Tiger , " hy Mr . F . C . Burnand and Mr . Edward Solomon , which has been performed at Canterbury by the Old Stagers , is , it appears , an adaptation of the old farce "The Bengal Tiger . " The Old Stagers have also appeared in " Good Bye , " aversion b y Mr . Arthur Bourchier of that much adapted play , 'I heuriet ' s " | ean-Marie . "

The Leigh Masons held their annual excursion on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult . A large number put in an appearance , and journeyed in three saloons from Leigh and Bedford Station by the 8 . 15 a . m . train to Chester , that being the appointed place . During the day they visited Hawarden and Eaton . The weather was rather adverse , but a very pleasant day vvas spent .

On Tuesday evening the Shah paid a State visit to the Opera in Paris , the State box being erected on the amphitheatre in front of the stage and extending the whole width of _ the house . The President and Madame Carnot , the Ministers , the Prefect of the Seine , the Diplomatic Corps , and the great dignitaries were also present on the occasion to do honour to the Persian Monarch .

lhe holiday folk must have been greatly disappointed owing to the condition of the weather on Monday , when it rained more or less continuously till thc afternoon vvas well advanced . Worse still , the railway and other excursions must have suffered very considerably , though not to the same extent as on Whit Monday , when it rained almost without intermission all day long .

The good news reached home early this week that on Saturday last General Grenfell , who commands in chief the Egyptian army , attacked and destroyed the invading force of Dervishes under the command of Wad-il-Njumi , Njumi himself and all his emirs but one being slain , as well as 1500 of his fighting men . The rest retreated in the utmost disorder , and for the moment all fear of Egypt being laid waste , is at an nnd .

lhe Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Provincial Grand Master of Cornwall , has fixed Tuesday , the 27 th instant , for the holding of the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge , vvhich will be held at Liskeard , under the banner of Lodge St . Martin , No . 570 , the brethren of which recently met and appointed various Committees to carry out all thc

arrangements necessary to give to the Prov . Grand Master and the Provincial Grand Lodge a thoroughly cordial welcome . The . Prov . Grand Lodge meeting Will be held in the Town Hall , and at the conclusion of tlie business the brethren will dine together in the Market House . The usual service will be held in the parish church .

Bro . Ermilo G . Canton , director and proprietor of the Boletin Masonico , the "olicial" organ of the " Del . Sup . Gr . Or . de Ios Estados Unidos Mexicanos , " has printed the complete text of the lecture on "The Great Pyramid and Freemasonry , " delivered by Bro . John Chapman in

Philadelphia and in several lodges in this country . The text has been carefully printed in Spanish from a translation by his son , Mr . John Henry Chapman . The circulation of the lecture through Spain by our Bro . E . Contveras , in the El Taller , and now in Mexico by Bro . E . G . Canton , will give it considerably more publicity .

On St . John ' s day , June 24 th , Bro . Sidney Mendelssohn , son of the late Rev . At . Mendelssohn , Rabbi in Kimberley \ South Africa , for some years , was duly installed the VV . Master of the Cosmopolitan Lodge . Bro . W . F . Cranswick and the Ven . Archdeacon , Bro . W . T . Gaul , were appointed Senior and Junior Wardens respectively . Among the large gathering of brethren assembled in the Cosmopolitan Temple vvere the VV . Masters , Officers , and brethren of the

following lodges : Richard Giddy , 1574 ( E . G . ); Charles Warren , 1 S 32 ( E . C . ) ; Athole , " 591 ( S . C ); Union , 719 ( S . C ); ancl Peace and Harmony ( Netherlands ) . After the conclusion of the ceremony , the brethren sat down to the banquet , when the usual " loyal and Masonic toasts were duly responded to . One and all joining in the toast of " Prosperity to the W . Master and members of the Cosmopolitan Lodge . "

Owing to the dirty weather which prevailed at Portsmouth on Saturday last , the inspection of the Fleet by the Emperor of Germany vvas postponed till Monday . On Sunday , however , his Majesty vvas able to go over some of the ships , though , owing to the minuteness with which he examined what was to be seen , only a part of the programme that had been arranged vvas got through . On Monday , the

Emperor , accompanied by the Prince of Wales , Prince Henry of Prussia , Prince Albert Victor of Wales , the Duke of Cambridge , and others , inspected the Fleet , his Majesty being on board the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert , while the Queen went on board another of the Royal Yachts —the Alberta -and unofficially saw everything , but without taking any part in the pageant . Majesty visited Aldershot , and there inspected the troops under the command of Bro . Lieut .-Gen . Sir Evelyn Wood , expressing his satisfaction at the appearance , discipline , and precision of movement of the force . On Thursday his Imperial Majesty concluded his visit to the Oueen , and left on board the Hohenzollern to return to Germany . THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical

suggestion may be of service . Last year more than , ( . 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased b y inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury of our own working people , so true is it that "evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want 6 f heart . Bros . Lord Halsbury ( Lord High Chancellor ) and Sir M . E . Hicks Beach , Bart ., were present at the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Wednesday . The Queen has been pleased to cause letters patent to be passed under the Great Seal granting a Charter of Incorporation to the Royal Historical Society , of vvhich her Majesty is patron .

We are glad to announce that the Countess of Zetland , wife of thc Prov . G . Master of North ancl East Yorkshire , vvho was lately prostrated by an attack of typhoid fever , is making- fair progress towards recovery . The Prince of Wales , as Commodore , presided at the

banquet given by the Royal Yacht Squadron to the Emperor of Germany and his brother , Prince Henry , at Cowes , on Wednesday . His Royal Highness proposed the chief toasts of the evening' , which were drunk with much enthusiasm .

The marriage arranged between Lord Skelmersdale , eldest son of Bro . the Earl and Countess of Lathom , and Lad } - Wilma Bouverie , only daughter of the Earl and Countess of Radnor , will take place very quietly at Longford Castle on Thursday next , the i-jth instant .

The Board of thc Annuity Branch of thc Fund of Scottish Benevolence granted at the July meeting 12 annuities of £ \ o each , two of £ 15 , and one of £ 20 , making a total of £ 170 , or , with the £ 155 granted in January , ^ , ' 325 of annuities . This leaves about £ 200 still to be disposed of .

The meeting of the High Court of Foresters vvas held at Bournemouth on Monday , when O 5 S delegates vvere present . When thc Court was closed , there was a long- and imposing procession through the town , the representatives of many affiliated friendly societies being present , as well as eight bands of music .

lhe weather was brilliant at Aldershot on Wednesday , when the Emperor of Germany , vvith Prince Henry of Prussia , and the suite in attendance were present at a grand review and sham fi ght of the force under the command of Bro . Lieut .-General Sir Evelyn Wood , his Majesty being

well satisfied with the appearance of the force . About 30 , 000 men of all arms vvere vvith the colours on thc occasion . The Prince of Wales was unfortunately prevented from being present at the review , his medical adviser having strictly forbidden his Royal Highness from mounting a horse in tiie present state of his health .

The death is announced of Mr . W . R . S . Ralston , of the British Museum . Mr . Ralston has died at an age vvhen many men are at the full vigour of their intellectual strength ; for he was only 61 . Mr . Ralston was one of the best of Russian scholars . Great numbers of Englishmen and Englishwomen owe to Mr . Ralston their first acquaintance

and their enduring love of Russian literature , his admirable translations from vvhich are recognised asstandard works in their department of literature . Air . Ralston was a man of most charming manners . Hc had an extraordinarily wide knowledge of folk-lore , and could "tell stories" as well before a big-audience in St . James ' s Hall as before a fewfriends in his quiet lodgings .

I he annual picnic of the Lodge of Harmony , No . 220 , Garston , was held on Monday , the 29 th ult ., at Llangollen . The first place visited was Plas-Newydd , with its quaint surroundings , after which dinner was provided at the Royal , the chair being'occupied by Hro Lawton , W . M ., who was supported by the I . P . M ., Bros . T . F . Hill , P . G . S . B . ; VV . S . Vine , P . G . D . C , D . C ; H . Hatch , P . M . ; ancl Wm . Olver , P . M . The Vice-Chairmen were Bros . Fisher , S . W .,

and Billmgsley , J . W . The party were afterwards photographed on the lawn of the hotel . They then drove in waggonettes to Corwcn , a drive which all thoroughly enjoyed . On returning , tea was served , after which several ladies and gentlemen ascended to Castle Dinas Bran , whilst others visited Berwyn and Vallc Crucis Abbey . The return journey was commenced at 9 . 20 , and on arriving at Allerton omnibuses were waiting to convey the party to their respective destinations , all having spent a very pleasant day .

PROVINCIAL GRAND LODOE OK GLASGOW . —A regular quarterly meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow was held on the 30 th ult ., in the St . Mark Hall , Buchanan-street . The quarterly communications in July occurring in the middle of the holiday season are proverbial for poor attendances , and the last meeting was no exception to the rule . Bro . las . Boyd , S . P . vvas supported by Bros . J . Dalrymple Duncan , Thomas Halket , David Reid , Wm . Phillips , and others . Apologies for absence were received from Bros . John Graham , P . G . Sec , reported that 152 brethren had intimated their intention of taking part in the annual howling competition forthe "Pearce" and " Jubilee " Cups on the succeeding

week , and that in addition to thc cups there vvould be prizes of £ 6 , £ 3 , and £ 2 . The report submitted by Bro . Halket , Treasurer of the Prov . Grand Lodge Benevolent Fund , for the last quarter , showed that in response to four appeals from lodges in the province £ \ S had been granted , and for cases of casual relief £ 3 3 s ., a total of £ 21 3 s . disbursed during the quarter .

The death is announced of Mr . W . R . S . Ralston , of the British Museum . Mr . Ralston has died at an age vvhen many men are at the full vigour of their intellectual strength ; for he was only 61 . Mr . Ralston was one of the best of Russian scholars . Great numbers of Englishmen and Englishwomen owe to Mr . Ralston their first acquaintance

and their enduring love of Russian literature , his admirable translations from vvhich are recognised asstandard works in their department of literature . Air . Ralston was a man of most charming manners . Hc had an extraordinarily wide knowledge of folk-lore , and could "tell stories" as well before a big-audience in St . James ' s Hall as before a fewfriends in his quiet lodgings .
