Macbean was appointed lodge Steward for the approaching Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The Provincial Grand Master of Louisiana

was saluted in ancient form , and in expressing his thanks begged that in future the brethren would allow him to come amongst them withoutconferring this extra honour upon him . The elections for the ensuing year were next proceeded with . Owing to his continued ill-healch , Bro . Professor Hayter Lewis , S . W ., had requested to be passed over for this year at least , and the brethren naturally acceded to his

request , though reluctant to forego , even for a time , the pleasure of placing a brother so highly esteemed and sincerely loved in the chair . It was felt by all , including Bro . Dr . Wynn Westcott , the J . W ., and the officers below him , that the regrettable vacancy afforded a good opportunity of recognising the eminent services to the lodge of Bro . W . H . Rylands , one of the founders , who was

accordingly voted to the office of VV . M . by an absolutely unanimous ballot , and in thanking the brethren gracefully referred to the brotherly feeling of those who had not only acquiesced in postponing their own advancement , but had been foremost in desiring that he should precede them . The other ballots resulted in the unanimous re-election of Bro . Walter Besant as Treasurer , and Bro . John Freeman as

Tyler . Two very curious aprons were exhibited by Bros . Cohu and Stevens respectively . Bro . Deputy Inspector-General Belgrave Ninnis , M . D ., R . N ., F . R . C . S ., Staff-Surgeon to H . M . S . Discovery in the last Arctic Expedition , holder of the Blane Gold Medal , and author of several works of natural history and discovery was proposed as a joining member . The paper of the evening was entitled

" Naymus Grecus Identified , by Bro . C . C . Howard , of Picton , New Zealand ; and in his absence was read by the Secretary . In the discussion which followed , the value of the paper was admitted by all , but the conclusions arrived at were demurred to by Bro . Rylands , Gould , and Ball , whilst Bros . Speth and Hughan ( who had sent a

written commentary on the lecture ) - upheld the probability of the theory in question . Bro . Williams also discussed the matter . A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the author , and the lodge was closed , the brethren adjourning to the Hoiborn Restaurant for dinner .

St . Pancras Lodge ( No . 2271 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Midland Grand Hotel , St . Pancras , on Thursday , the ist inst ., when there was a good attendance of brethren , who were unanimous in congratulations on the excellent position the lodge has attained during its short career . The members present included Bros . H . G . Graham , VV . M . ; R . G . Webster ,

Purposes ; R . Hardy Smith , 1196 ; J . H . Pasmore , l . G . 2205 ; John Read , P . P . G . O . Middx . ; Frank Marshall , 15 S 6 ; G . W . Lewis , I . P . M . 2206 ; H . Lockstone , J . D . C . H . Worley was passed to the Second Degree . Bro . Henry Longman was then presented as W . M . elect , and duly installed into that position , the ceremony being ably rendered by Bros . Dr . Powdrell , P . M ., and W . A .

Scurrah , P . M . The following officers were appointed and invested : Bios . R . G . Webster , M . P ., S . W . ; W . T . Perry , J . W . ; H . E . Jay , Treas . ; VV . A . Scurrah , P . M ., Sec . j R . S . Chattey , S . D . ; J . Irvine , J . D . ; C . Jacobs , I . G . j II . W . Lawrence , Org . ; R . Chattey , D . C j H . Rutley , Stwd . ; and Whiting , Tyler . A handsome Past Master ' s jewel was presented to Bro . H . G . Graham ,

I . P . M ., in recognition of services rendered during his Mastership and as a mark of esteem , and was suitably acknowledged . Bro . Graham , I . P . M ., then said a very pleasing duty devolved upon him , which was to present , in the name of the lodge , a small testimonial to Bro . Dr . Powdrell , P . M ., on the happy occasion of his marriage , which took place a short time ago . In private life they

esteemed him , and in the lodge they had found him a most kind and encouraging Master , and upon such an important occasion they were happy to present him with a small token of their feelings towards him . They hoped Bro . Dr . Powdrell's happiness would go on increasing , and that he would be spared many years to be with them . Bro . Dr . Powdrell , P . M ., in feeling terms acknowledged the gift ,

which consisted of a case of dessert knives and forks . The resignation of Bro . Capt . Knightley was received with regret , and letters apologising for non-attendance were read from several distinguished brethren . The VV . M . was appointed trustee for the Benevolent Fund , and the lodge was closjd . After a sumptuous repast the usual toasts were cordially

given . Bro . Rev . J . S . Brownrigg , P . G . Chap ., having very briefly replied for " The Grand Officers , " Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , Grand Sec , thanked the brethren very much on behalf of the distinguished band of brethren holding high position in Masonry—for the

consideration always given the toast , and assured them that the Grand Officers were only too anxious to do what they could to show they deserved the positions they held . He looked back three years ago when he consecrated this lodge , and he remembered with very deep regret that the dear , kind , and illustrious brother whom he placed in the chair on that occasion was no more . He was sure the

revered name of Sir R . N . Fowler would always stand in this lodge , for no better and no more highly honoured brother or gentleman ever existed . The lodge was fortunate in meeting - in good quarters , and was excellently managed , and it would be their own fault if the members did not have an excellent lodge . He congratulated the W . M . on attaining the chair and was sure he would have a good year , and

that when their distinguished member—Bro . Webster , M . P . —attained the chair a year hence he would also rule the lodge in an excellent manner . Bro . Graham , I . P . M ., next gave "The Worshipful Master , " and said that , as had been stated , their young lodge would probably have an important part to play in the future . It was therefore necessary that they should have

good Masters to carry on the traditions of the founders . In Bro . Longman they certainly had as good and as estimable a Master as could be found—a man anxious to do all he could for Masonry and their lodge . When the present Master ' s term closed they would be able to look back to the year iSgi as a year in which they were efficiently and wisely ruled .

Bro . H . Longman , W . M ., in reply , said the I . P . M . had lauded him to such an extent that it was difficult to respond . He had tried in the past to perform the offices he had held and to attend regularly , and so far as in him lay had done his duty . The members had honoured him by placing him in the chair , the brother who was now S . W . having kindly given way . He should do all in his power during

his year to support and uphold the lodge and ensure the comfort of the members . He would do what he could to emulate those who had gone before , and hoped the officers would do their best to support him , and in conjunction with the other members give him work to do . He thanked them for the reception given the toast , and especially the I . P . M . for the able manner in which he had proposed it .

Bro . H . G . Graham , I . P . M ., replying for "The I . P . M . and Installing Master , " said it showed the importance of the lodge when it was necessary to install the fourth Master to have the assistance of three Pp . st Masters in the ceremony . Having two such able Past Masters as Bros . Powdrell and Scurrah , they thought it only fair to divide the task . He could look back upon the past year with

pleasure , having made many kind friends in the brethren attending the lodge . Bro . Dr . Powdrell , P . M ., having also returned thanks , Bro . W . A . Scurrah , P . M ., P . P . G . S . of W . Middx ., Sec , in the course of his response , said that their good friend Bro . Longman , VV . M ., was initiated in the same lodge as himself , one month before he entered Masonry , and

therefore he had looked upon their VV . M . with a great deal of affection . When this lodge was about to start he went to Bio . Longman and persuaded him to become a founder . Having been initiated in the same lodge , he thought he should have great pleasure in installing their W . M . that evening ' , and that ambition had been fulfilled . He had taken a great deal of interest in the lodge , and hoped in the

future to do all he could to forward its best interests and increase its prosperity . He had to thank the members of the lodge for their support at the last Boys' School Festival , when the I . P . M . took up £ 173 , and made himself a Vice-President of the Institution . He thought that result was one for sincere congratulation , seeing that the lodge was but three years old , and that they had but 20 members .

Bros . Masters , P . M . ; Lennox Browne , P . P . G . W . Essex ; H . Lovegrove , P . P . G . S . of W . Middx . ; W . G . Fenn , and Lewis responded for "The Visitors , " congratulating the lodge on the success it had attained , and returning thanks for the kind hospitality bestowed upon them . Bros . Jay , Treasurer , and Scurrah , P . M ., Secretary ,

replied for "' 'I he Treasurer and Secretary , " after which "The Officers " was duly honoured . Previous to the Tyler ' s toast closing the proceedings , the W . M . expressed his intention of representing the lodge at the next Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution .

Bro . John Read , P . P . G . O . Middx ., directed the musical arrangements , and was assisted by Miss Anne Wilson , Miss Madeline Hardy , and Bros . Hanson and Kempton .

PROVINCIAL MEETINGS . BRADFORD . Acacia Lodge ( No . 2321 ) . —A regular meeting of this lodge was held on the 10 th ult . at the Masonic Hall , Darky-street , when there were present Bros . S . A . Au . y , W . M . ; T . Jowett , S . W . ; E . P . Peterson , as J . W . ; C H . Ellis , Treas . ; J . B . Fearnley , Asst . Sec ; G . Althorp , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., as Chap . ; J . Root as Tyler . A resolution was also passed granting the sanction of the Jodge for a lodge of instruction to be held under its warrant in accordance with the Book of Constitutions .

After the lodge was closed the brethren adjourned to refreshment , and spent a pleasant evening .

M . ; R . G . Webster ,
