United Grand Lodge Of England.

In making the motion , he said : Brethren , —I very much regret—and I am sure that regret will be shared by every member of Grand Lodge—that the Earl of Lathom , our Deputy Grand Master cannot be here this evening , because the proposition which he has given notice of would come much more fittingly from his hand . He has given notice of it , and I really wish that he was here to propose it . Brethren , in his absence , I will endeavour , as

far as I can , to supply his place , and to submitit for your approval . Brethren , combined wilh the loyalty which animates Masonic hearts towards our Sovereign , there is an instinctive feeling of devotion towards the head of our Craft . Masons are proud that the Prince of Wales should have consented to act as our Grand Master , and I feel sure that in doing so he has added to and intensified the feelings which we should naturally entertain towards

him as the heir to the Throne . Brethren , he could not accept that office with a view of shirking from its duties . True it is that the acceptance of the office would involve trouble ; but trouble is a word which the Prince of Wales , our Grand Master , has never allowed to interefere with the discharge of duty . Therefore , brethren , in assuming the office of our Grand Masier he has done his very utmost to preside over us with that dignity and ability

which have characterised his efforts . Brethren , it is fitting that we , when an occasion offers , should show the appreciation which we entertain for his services , and for the position which he holds . It is considered in human life a great subject for congratulation when two young people are entering into wedded life . AU wishes are given for their prosperity ; congratulations are offered to them freely on all hands ; it is considered one of the

most enviable periods in the existence of a human being . But , brethren , surely it is no light subject for congratulation when the bright star of happiness has shone for nearly a quarter of a century on a wedded pair . It is a subject of congratulation when unclouded happiness has existed for so long a period ; and I think that if that is the case with us generally it is so also with those who occupy the most exalted position ; and I think it is

fitting that we , as Masons , should show that we do enter into the every-day life of those who occupy the very highest position ; and it is , therefore , a very suitable occasion for us to present some gratulatory offering to the Princess of Wales on this happy occasion which is so speedily to occur . Brethren , I am quite sure that the Princess of VVales since she entered this country as a bride has won for herself the love and affection of all

Englishmen by the dignity with which she has occupied her high position and the kindness which she has ever displayed and her sympathy with those around her . Let us , as Masons , come forward upon this occasion and lay at her feet a dutiful address with a small offering , as the notice of motion gives , of £ 500 to buy some suitable tcken on that happy occasion . Brethren , I know very well that you will not imagine that this amount of £ 5 °° at all

represents the feelings which we entertain for her . It is not at all to be measured by its value , but it is to be measured by the feeling of devoted affection which exists in our Masonic hearts . It is in that spirit that we offer it , and it is in that spirit I hope it will be received . Brethten , I have the greatest pleasure in moving this motion which has been given notice of by the Earl of Lathom , which , after it is seconded , will be read out to you .

Bro . THOMAS W . TEW , R . W . Prov . G . M . of West Yorkshire M . W . G . M . in the chair , I respectfully crave your peimission , and the indulgence of this Grand Lodge , to second the resolution which has been so gracefully and eloquently proposed by the M . W . G . M . in the chair . Brethren , \ ou have shown charity towards the deserving poor of this metropolis ,

and I trust you will support this resolution and testify your love and affection to her Royal Highness the Princess of VVales and her illustrious Consort , who will attain on the ioth of March next , the 25 th year of their married life . I hope it will please T . G . A . O . T . U . lo spare them to witness their golden wedding day , and I hope every one of us will be spared lo rejoice on that occasion . I venture to second the resolution .

Bro . MAURICE SPIEGEL , P . M . ol the Joppa Lodge , No . 188 , London , then said : M . W . G . M ., —The notice of motion which stands in my name on the agenda I have much pleasure , with your permission , to withdraw , in favour of the one just now proposed , and which I cordially and loyally

support . I am gratified to see that the motion I attempted lo propose to commemorate the happy and joyful event has , in some degree , been adopted by the Earl of Lathom , R . W . D . G . M ., and with more prominence and liberality than I could venture . Therefore , in supporting this proposition , I beg to withdraw mine . Bro . Spiegel's motion was as follows : —

That the Grand Lodge present a Congratulatory Address to his Royal Highness the Most Worshipful Grand Master , and to her Royal Highness his gracious Consoit , on the celebration of their Silver Wedding , the same to be enclosed in a suitable artistic casket .

Bro . Rev . H . ADAIR PICKARD , P . G . C , desired to support the original motion because he hed the honour of initiating the Earl of Lathom in Masonry , at Oxford . He desired also to support it as the Senior P . M . of the Apollo University Lodge at Oxford , of which the Prince of VVales had kindly consented once to be Master . The motion having been put and carried amidst loud applause ,

Bro . BEACH said he was very glad that Bro . Spiegel had withdrawn his motion , because the resolution would come with greater force if carried unanimously without any other proposition . The following two appeals were then laid before Grand Lodge b y V . W . Bro . Philbrick , O . C , Grand Registrar .

1 . By Bro . Stephen J . Thompson , W . M . of the St . George ' s Lodge , No . 440 , Montreal , against an order of Bro . Lieut .-Col . William Henry Hutton , P . G . D ., Deputy District Grand Master of Montreal , suspending him from his office , on the ground that the said Lieut .-Col . VV . H . Hutton had not been legally appointed Dep . Dist . Grand Master of that district .

2 . By Bro . Fredeiick Lee , P . M . of the Unity Lodge of Sydney , No . 1169 , Sydney , N . S . W ., against the decision of tbe District Grand Lodge of New South Wales , on his complaint against Bro . John Frederick Hill , the W . M . of Lodge No . 116 9 , for refusing to admit him into the lodge , after he had been excluded therefrom by resolution of its members .

The first of these appeals was dismissed , and the second allowed , the Grand Registrar stating that though Bro . Hutton had tendered his resignation it was not accepted , when he wilhdrew his resignation , and his still holding the office was notified to all the lodges in Montreal , and he was actually present and had his Health drank in that capacity when Bro . Thompson was in the chair as Master of his Lodge . In the second appeal

the Grand Registrar stated lhat according to the constitutions no private lodge had power to pass a sentence of suspension of his Masonic functions on any brother . A lodge might exclude a brother for one night for a grave Masonic offence , or fine him , or admonish him . Grand Lodge was then closed . The jewels presented to Bro . Sir Albert Woods and Bro . Thomas Fenn , were manufactured by Bro , George Kenning ,

Ihe minutes of the half-yearly communication of ist June , and of ihe Moveable Grand Lodge , held at Weymouth , on the 22 nd July , were read and confirmed . Lord EGERTON OF TATTON then said he had to bring before the notice of the brethren a matter which was not on the paper of agenda , which he thought they would deem worthy of their immediate attention . His

attention had recently been called to the approaching anniversary—the 25 th year—of the wedding day of their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales , and he wrote a letter to the Grand Secretary , saying that he ( Lord Egerton of Tatton ) would move to-day , what he would now wish to do , to present a congratulatory address to her Royal Highness the Princess of VVales on the celebration of the 251 b anniversary—the silver

wedding day of her Royal Highness and the Most VVorshipfuI Grand Masier the Prince of Wales , and that the same be signed on behalf of the Grand Lodge by the Pro . Grand Master , and enclosed in a suitable casket . They had recently the jubilee of Her Majesty ' s reign celebrated , and following very closely upon that came the 25 th anniversary of the

wedding day of the Prince and Princess of Wales . He thought , considering the very great interest his Royal Highness took in Freemasonry , and more especially in Mark Masonry , it was but fitting that Mark Masons should approach his Royal Highness vvith an address ot congratulation on the 25 th anniversary ol iheir wedding , which would occur in March next . Lord EGERTON OF TATTON then formally moved the vote .

Bro . Major WOODALL seconded , saying he felt sure the motion would meet with the response of the brethren ' s hearts . He hoped their Royal Highnesses would be graciously pleased to accept it . The motion was carried unanimousl y , as was also another motion by Lord Egerton of Tatton , seconded by Bro . Major Woodall , that the matter be relerred to the General Board to carry out .

Bro . F . BINCKES , G . Secretary , said that perhaps this would be a suitable moment for reading ihe reply to the address of congratulation which Grand Lodge voted to her Majesiy on her completing the Jubilee year of her reign-Acting under instructions , the address had been enclosed in a suitable casket , and it was in due form transmitted to the Home Secretary , from whom , under date 25 th November , 1887 , he had received the following

reply : — Whitehall , 25 th November , 1 SS 7 . Sir , I have had the honour to lay before the Queen the loyal and dutiful address of the Mark Master Masons of England and VVales and the Colonies and Dependencies of the British Crown , in Grand LoJge assembled on the occasion of the completion of the 50 th year of her Majesty's reign . And I have to inform you that her Majesty was

pleased to receive the same very graciously , and to command me to express to you her Majesty ' s appreciation of the tasteful manner in vvhich the address is illuminated , and of the handsome case in which it is enclosed . 1 have the honour to be , Sir , your obedient servant , HENRY MATTHEWS . The Grand Secrefary of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons , Sa , Red Lion Square , High Holborn , W . C .

Bro . F . Binckes next said his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M . M . M ., had been graciously pleased to approve of certain brethren for Past Grand rank in celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee , and the present would be a suitable time to present their patents to those brethren belore proceeding with the ordinary business of Grand Lodge .
