but we may mention that the lodge further proved thc charitable disposition already spoken of previously by v . iting i 10 ios . to the svidosv of a deceased brother . ( This amount was further made up to 20 guineas by a collection at the banquet table . ) Bro St . Clair svas elected "Commissaice aux Charlie ' s " for the ensuing year , and the usual grant of £ 5 5-. - was placed at his disposal by the lodge . Bro . St . Clair intimated that as he svas already Vice-President of
the Girls' Institution , and of the Old People , he intended to become the same for the Boys , and hoped the brethren would help him to their utmost . The usual subscriptions were also voted to the French Charities . After such good svork the brethren adjourned svith light hearts to the banqueting hall , svhere Bro . and appreciated accordingly . After the removal of the cloth the usual "Santes u ' obligtion" vvere duly proposed by the VV . seems to stir up the blood of the members , it is that of " La I'rance et sou representant . was mainly due to the kind patronage of the Grand Officers of England , svho , from the first , had volunteered 'heir advice and their services , and had stimulated by their Presence the Masonic ardour of the members . distinguished brother svould also address a fesv words to the brethren . The toast having been enthusiastically received , Bro . Philbrick , G . Reg ., returned thanks for the Grand Officers . He said he had often visited the Lodge La France , but felt a certain sadness at the thought that on this same occasion , only 12 months back , that good friend of the Iodge , the late Grand Secretary , svas sitting next to him at that very
table . On the other hand he svas proud to think that the Grand Officers numbered among themselves brethren svho , like Bro . Fenn , svere so svell able to join in the svork of this lodge , and as a body they ss * ere svilling to be judged through the Grand Officers , members of the Lodge La France , Bros . Monteuuis and Bue . Bro . Letchworth , also returning thanks , said he felt he had been asked to reply because he came among them as
the successor of that model among Masons , the late Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , svho had alsvays taken such deep interest in the La France Lodge . He ( Bro . Letchsvorth ) had several times visited the lodge , he had spent many happy moments svith the brethren and looked forsvard to to being able to be svith them again on many occasions . He congratulated the lodge on its marvellous efficiency and expressed the hope that the honours already bestowed on
tsvo of its members might be further extended to a third svorthy brother . Bro . A . Sauve , I . P . M ., then rose to propose " The Health of the W . M ., " vvho had been one of the most industrious and hard svorking officers , and svho he svas satisfied would fill the chair in svhich he had been installed that evening . He svas quite sure that Bro . Pouard svould be equal to any svork that vvas required of him , and while
drinking his health svould svish him a very successful year of office . Bro . E . J . N . Pouard , W . M ., in returning thanks , said he svas much obliged to the I . P . M . for the kind words he had said of him , and his great endeavour svould be to act up to them , so that he mii » ht give satisfaction to the brethren svho had elected him to such an honourable post . He begged to thank them one and all .
The Worshipful Master next proposed "The Health of the Visitors . " He had heard many of his predecessors in the chair emphasising the great desire of the lodge to extend its hospitality as much as possible , and the magnificent gathering around him proved that they svere right . He trusted it svould long continue to be so , and gave to all the visitors present a hearty and fraternal welcome . It svas impossible to read out all the names , and he svould couple
with the toast the names of Bros . Dr . Pocock , Vice-Pres . B . G . P . ; J . M . McLeod , P . P . G . W ., Sec . R . M . I . B . ; and Verdier , S . VV . of La Cesaree Lodge , in svhich lodge the work svas also conducted in French . Bro . Dr . Pocock , Vice-Pres . B . G . P ., replying for the visitors , said he svas very proud to find his chief , Bro . Fenn , svorking so beautifully in a foreign language . The svork svitnessed upstairs svas really beautiful , and although
his ( Bro . Pocock ' s ) knosvledge of French svas not all that might be desired , still he had been able to follosv the ceremony throughout , and was pleased to find the emulation svorking so svell translated and adhered to . He congratulated the lodge on its marked success , and thanked the brethren for the splendid hospitality extended to the visitors . Bro . J . M . McLeod , P . P . G . W . Derbyshire , Secretary R . M . I . B ., said he svas svell aware that his name had been
mentioned , more especially as the representative of one of the Masonic Institutions . He had been happy to see the charitable and brotherly feeling existing in the lodge by svhat had happened upstairs , and he sincerely hoped that the brethren svould support their elected "Commissaire aux Charites , " Bro . St . Clair , more especially so as he understood it svas the " Boys' " turn svith the lodge next year . Bro . Verdier , S . W . 590 , said he had been simply amazed
svith the splendid svork he witnessed upstairs . He had often heard of the La France Lodge and of its good svork . In his own lodge in Jersey they also worked in French , and they vvould strive to imitate the splendid example set them . They had adopted the La France ritual , but it svould take some time before they could work anything like svhat he had seen this evening . Bro . Monteuuis , P . G . S . B ., then rose and said : Brethren ,
the W . M . has entrusted me svith the next toast , svhich is that of "The Installing Master . " I do so svith all the more pleasure that Bro . St . Clair is a great friend of mine , and that I have no need to sing his praises , as he is so well known to you all . With all his friends , Bro . St . Clair is a great favourite , and in the French colony we find him one of the leading spirits of the " Societe Nationale Francaise , " ever ready to help to the svelfare of his compatriots , and
even at the present time svorking hard for the happy continuation of our French club . Now , svhat about him as a Freemason ? A more successful and useful career seldom falls to the lot of a brother . He is thc first initiate of this lodge , and sve are justly proud of him . During the tsvo years he presided over us finer and more perfect svork could not have been svitnessed , and sve could not have svished for a more genial Master . Since he has left the chair he has
constantly helped the succeeding Masters , and looked after the svelfare of all , and the founders , after years of hard work , have been happy to find a brother so svilling to bear a great part of the responsibility of the management of the lodge . I am also proud to have brought him into my mother lodge , that line old English Iodge , the 'Tuscan , No . 14 , in svhich lie is gradually working his svay up . In fact , I expect that in a few months his name will be submitted
for approval to the M . W . Grand Master as Grand Stesvard of England . Brethren , I hardly think that Bro . St Clair's Masonic successes will end there , and 1 ask you to drink his health , svishing him all the future honours he has so svell deserved to obtain . Bro . St . Clair , P . M ., svho , on rising , svas received svith great cheers , said : VV . M . and Brethren , I thank you one and all for the very hearty reception you have given me . I
must admit that svhen Bro . Monteuuis began his speech I thought 1 svould get off lightly , but he has managed to heap upon me an amount ot compliments svhich I cannot possibly deserve . Hosvever , this I can say , I am very proud to be the first initiate of this lodge . I have alsvays tried to uphold its prestige to the best of my ability , and I certainly intend to continue doing so . Before sitting dosvn I svish to
express my sincere thanks to Bro . Fenn for the great help he has given me , and it is useless to disguise that his cooperation has been one of the main causes of the success of this meeting , and a great attraction and pleasure to all . 1 must not forget our Director of Ceremonies for the occasion , Bro . Frank Richardson , svhose kindness and goodwill towards us sve all greatly appreciate .

When the cheers that follosved svhen Bro . St . Clair took his seat had somesvhat subsided , the Worshiful Master rose to propose " The Health of the Past Masters , and particularly that of the I . P . M . " After referring to the good services rendered by the Past Master and to those still rendered bv the civil officers , he paid a svell deserved compliment to Bro . Sauve , tne I . P . M ., for the manner in svhich
he had fulfilled his duties to the lodge during the past year , svhich had been a very busy year , svith tsvo emergency meetings and a final raising that very evening . Bro . Sauvd had done his svork thoroughly and svell deserved the jesvel svhich had been voted to him and svhich it svas nosv his very great pleasure to pin on his breast . Bro . Sauve , I . P . M ., returned thanks in a fesv appropriate and heartfelt svords .
The toast of "The Officers svas duly proposed ami honoured , as svell as that of " The Masons pauvres et Malheureux , " svhich are remembered in this lodge by deeds as svell as by svords , and so terminated another most successful meeting of the Lodge La France . Besides the brethren already mentioned sve noticed among the list of visitors the follosving names : Bros . S . F . Staples ,

" Bro Carter having brielly returned thanks , several propositions of initiates svere taken , and after the visitors had tendered " Hearty good svishes , " the lodge svas closed .

" He said it svas a proud moment for him to be in the position to propose the toast , and more proud to knosv that the subject of his toast svas the estimable brother svho that day had been placed in the chair of that lodge as its head . Bro . Thomas svas svell knosvn to them all as a good Mason . He came from a neighbouring tosvn , the tosvn of Deptford , svhere he svas knosvn and respected ,

He had alsvays in Freemasonry endeavoured to do his duty in svhatever ofiice he might have been placed , and had the

M ., for the manner in svhich
he had fulfilled his duties to the lodge during the past year , svhich had been a very busy year , svith tsvo emergency meetings and a final raising that very evening . Bro . " He said it svas a proud moment for him to be in the position to propose the toast , and more proud to knosv that the subject of his toast svas the estimable brother svho that day had been placed in the chair of that lodge as its head . He had alsvays in Freemasonry endeavoured to do his duty in svhatever ofiice he might have been placed , and had the
