Saillard then said that it became his sad duty to move the resolution which appeared in the agenda paper—viz ., to express the great sorrow of the members of St . Botolph ' s Lodge at the death of their first W . M . and founder , and to move a vote of

condolence with Lady Staples and family . Bro . Saillard referred to the many estimable qualities of their distinguished brother , both in his public and private capacities , and said that they entertained the liveliest feelings of gratitude and affection for the numerous acts of kindness they had experienced at his hands , both as a lodge and individually , and they offered to his family their sincerest

The toast of "The Queen and the Craft , " having been proposed , The W . M . gave that of "The Pro Grand Master , Dep . Grand Master , and the Grand Officers . " They had , he vvas glad to say , two Grand Officers present , Bros . C .

F . Hogard and T . Cubitt . He regretted to say the Grand Secretary , who had accepted an invitation , had written at the last moment regretting his inability to be present , and Bros . Melntyre , Sir John Monckton , and Frank Richardson vvere prevented by other engagements from attending . Bro . Hogard , P . G . Std . Br ., in responding , " . referred especially to the services the Pro G . Master had rendered

to Masonry . Lord Carnarvon vvas now making a tour round the world , and whether it was at the Cape , Australia , or elsewhere , had received a most enthusiastic welcome as a distinguished ruler of the Grand Lodge of England . Bro . Benskin gave the toast of " The W . M ., Bro . Well ? , " whom they had the pleasure and privilege of welcoming to the chair of that lodge . Bro . Wells had shown an amount

of zeal and ability that had done marvels in bringing the Lodge of St . Botolph to its present position . He had passed through his year of office vvith no anxiety because of the support rendered by Bro . Wells . The toast was received most enthusiastically , and , in response , Bro . Wells said that it had always been a pleasure and a privilege to him to perform any of the

ceremonies , or to promote in any Way the interests of the lodge . _ On that day three years he hoped , if spared , to introduce his son as a candidate , Any proficiency he had shown in working the ceremonies he considered was due to Bro . Hayes , P . M ., vvho had imparted to him what Masonic knowledge he possessed . He trusted he should be able to perform his duties as W . M . to their

satisfaction , which vvas all the reward he should ask . The next toast was that of "The Installing Officer . " The W . M . said he vvas very grateful to Bro . Nelson Reed for performing the ceremony of installation that day . In that building Bro . Reed had initiated him , had installed him as W . M . of the Mizpah Lodge , and had now placed him in the chair of St . Botoloh's .

Bro . Nelson Reed , in reply , said that it had given him much pleasure to become again the medium of placing him ( the W . M . ) in the chair of K . S . His thanks were due to Bros . Hayes and Hamilton for the assistance they bad rendered him in that ceremony . The Worshipful Master , in proposing the toast of "The Visitors , " said if there was one thing Masons prided

themselves on more than another it was hospitality . He trusted all the visitors had spent a pleasant evening , and hoped they vvould not go away with a bad opinion ot St . Botolph Lodge . Bro . Soppet , P . G . Stwd ., thanked the brethren for their hospitality and for the opportunity they had given him of spending a very enjoyable evening . They had every reason

to be proud of their VV . M . as a man and a Mason , and he wished the lodge all prosperity . Bro . Cubitt , P . G . Purst ., also responded , and remarked that he had been present at the creation of the lodge , and at both of the installation meetings—aprivilegeheowed to Bro . Saillard . In reference to the loss the lodge had sustained in the death of Sir John Stapleshe felt sure he

, was expressing the feelings of the whole of the visitors in offering their sympathy to Lady Staples and family in their bereavement . Bro . Hayes said it afforded himgreat pleasure tosee Bro . Wells work as lie did . Although the W . M . had given him credit for being his Masonic teacher , Bro . Wells found his

b : st school to pursue his studies in the fields , and came to the lodge of instruction as a sort of dress rehearsal . Bro . Hamilton also replied . The next toast vvas that of "The Initiates , " whom the Worshipful Master welcomed , in the name of the members * , to the lodge . Bros . Elliot and Myers suitably responded .

The W . M . next proposed "The Past Masters of the St . Botolph's Lodge , " and remarked that the toa-t reminded him of the sad loss they had sustained in tne death of Bro . Sir John Naples . As a public man he was beloved and respected by all . He had received honours from the Queen and his fellow c tizens , an 1 as a brother he had endeared himself to every member cf the lodge .

They had enjoyed his hospitality both at the Mansion House and at the lodge , and he had departed from amongst them vvith the esteem and regret of all . Passing- from that subject they had two P . M . ' s present who had from the first taken the warmest interest in the welfare of the lodge and had passed with credit through the Master ' s chair . He referred to Bros . Saillard and Benskin . Bro . Benskin , in responding , thanked the brethren for

the great kindness they had shown him during * his year of office , and for the handsome jewel they had presented to him in acknowledgment of his services . It vvould always be his pride and pleasure to promote the interests of the lodge . Bro . Saillard also replied . The toast of "The Treasurer and Secretary , " responded to by Bros . H . S . Legg and W . Lake , and that of " The

Officers of the Lodge , " brought the toast list to a close . An excellent programme of music vvas prepared by the W . M ., and contributed to by his visitors and members of the lodge , Bro . Poole kindly acting as accompanist . The W . M ., following the example of his predecessors , presented to the Iodge a very handsome banner , with his arms and motto emblazoned thereon . The banner was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .

HENDON LODGE ( No . 2206 ) . —An emerg-ency meeting of this flourishing young lodge vvas held on Saturday , the 14 th ult ., at the Welsh Harp . There were present Bros . W . A . Scurrah , P . P . G . S . of W ., W . M . j VV . Stiles , I . P . M ., Treas . ; A . H . Scurrah , Sec ; J . Thorn , S . VV . ; Fraser , J . VV . ; J . Lewis , S . D . j A . Nottingham , J . D . ; Hearn , D . C ; J . Langley , I . G . j E . W . Wheeler , Org . j

and Whiting , Tyler ; and a goodly number of members and visitors . Bro . Mather , G . D . C . England , being among the former . The visitors vvere Bros . H . Dickey , W . M . 1723 j T . Mayes , 1613 ; Midgeley , 179 ; A . VV . Gerrard , 204 S ; and H . Webb , S . D . 2048 . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the previous meeting vvere read and conlirmed , and after the usual

preliminaries the following F . C . s were entrusted and retired Bros . W . B . and A . M . Parsons , C . H . Watts , and M . Powell , and the last-named brethren were raised to the Sublime Degree of M . M ., and Bros . F . W . Hearne , J . Hudson , J . H . Dobbs , and T . Eason were passed to the F . C Degree . The ballot was then taken for Messrs . G . H , Stansall , H . Elliott , and Williams , and was found

unanimous in their favour . All three candidates being present they vvere duly initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry . Nothing further offering , the lodge was closed . It is hardly necessary to add that the W . M ., who vvas ably assisted by his officers , performed the ceremonies in a highly efficient manner . The musical portion of the work was well conducted by Bro . Wheeler , the Organist of the lodge ;

the vocal parts being admirably rendered by Bros . Hearne , Dobbs , and Hudson . The brethren subsequently dined together , the W . M . presiding . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were severally honoured , Bro , Mather , G . D . C ., responding for the Grand Lodge . •The acting I . P . M ., Bro . W . M . Stiles , proposed the

toast of "TheW . M . " in very felicitous terms . The name of Bro . W . A . Scurrah vvas received vvith enthusiasm , the toast being heartily responded to by the brethren . In reply , the Worshipful Master said he begged to thank their Treasurer for the very kind way in vvhich he had proposed the toast of his health , and the brethren for the manner in vvhich they had responded to it . Most of them knew

the difficulty experienced in the foundation of that lodge . He thought at one time that they vvould not be successful ; but , as they knew , the warrant was granted , and their lodge had been formed . They were progressing most favourably , and although their Iodge vvas only six months old they had around their festive board 22 members , vvhich bore out the statement he made to the Grand Secretary vvhen he urged

upon him the desirability of their forming that lodge—that there were many thousand inhabitants in Hendon , but it had no Iodge . Thatseemed to have great weight vvith the Grand Secretary , and there vvas no doubt that to that fact they in a great measure owed thc existence of their lodge . He felt repaid for all the trouble he had taken by seeing so many worthy members around him—brethren whom he respected and esteemed , and who were , without doubt , the

right men to bring into Freemasonry—men vvho vvould uphold him and all Masters vvho followed him , and support and maintain the dignity of the lodge . "The Initiates" was responded to by the newly-made brethren , each expressing the gratification he felt at becoming a member of the Craft , and his admiration of the solemn and beautiful ceremony of initiation . Bros . Dickey , Mayes , Midgeley , Gerrard , and Webb responded for "The Visitors . "

In proposing the toast of " I he Officers , " the Worshipful Master spoke in very high terms of Bro . Thorn , adding that he knew the vvork thoroughly and vvas quite able to take the chair of W . M . when elected to that position . The J . W ., Bro . Fraser , vvas also well up in his work and took the greatest interest in the lodge . Although he vvas detained by pressure of businessfromattehding the meeting in the earlier

part of the evening , he , the W . M ., vvas quite sure that their worthy J . W . vvas on thorns until he reached the lodge . The lodge vvas fortunate , too , in their junior officers , the S . D . being an initiate of his in the Henry Levander Lodge , beside being the son of a very old friend . Both Bro . Lewis and Bro . Nottingham , their J . D ., knew their work thoroughly well . Bro . Langley , their I . G . vvas

, coming on in a most efficient manner , and Bro . Hearn , D . C , had rendered most valuable assistance . Their Organist , Bro . Wheeler , was deserving of great praise for the manner in which the musical part of the ceremonies had been performed . The thanks of the lodge vvere also due to Bros . Hearn , Dobbs , and Hudson for

their assistance as a choir , vvhich had given the brethren so much pleasure . The proceedings vvere interspersed vvith vocal and instrumusic , by several brethren . The Tyler ' s toast brought the proceedings to a close , the brethren separating at an early hour , after having spent a most enjoyable evening .

A lodge vvas known to have existed there in 16 97 , vvhen its W . M ., the first Duke ot Richmond and Lennox , vvas made M . W . Grand Master of England , ln 1724 the Lodgeof St . John was consecrated at the VVhite Horse ( nn , holding its the

VV ., whom they vvere all glad to see moving

towards the chair which his elder brothers ( Lord March , P . G . W ., and Lord Algernon Gordon Lennox ) have already filled . Commenting on the present flourishing state of thc lodge the W . M . said it was not always in that condition . It was many years ago almost in a state of inanition but

M . of the Mizpah Lodge , and had now placed him in the chair of St . Botoloh's .

Craft Masonry.

The W . M . next proposed "The Past Masters of the St .

Elliott , and Williams , and was found

unanimous in their favour . All three candidates being present they vvere duly initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry . Nothing further offering , the lodge was closed . It is hardly necessary to add that the W . M ., who vvas ably assisted by his officers , performed the ceremonies in a highly efficient manner . The musical portion of the work was well conducted by Bro . Wheeler , the Organist of the lodge ;

the vocal parts being admirably rendered by Bros .

Lewis having been obliged to leave earlier to catch a train .

Bro . Molesworth proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " who in his response referred to the length of time during vvhich lodges of Masons have been held in Chichester . A lodge vvas known to have existed there in 16 97 , vvhen its W . M ., the first Duke ot Richmond and Lennox , vvas made M . W . Grand Master of England , ln 1724 the Lodgeof St . John was consecrated at the VVhite Horse ( nn , holding its the

meetings on third Friday in ihe month , and there was also a lodge then existing known as the Lodge of St . Rochets Hill , held annually on Easter Tuesday ) on St . Roche ' s Hill , overlooking what is now Goodwood racecourse . To the Lodge of St . John the Duke of Richmond and Lennox and Aubigny in 1739 presented a copy of " Anderson ' s History and Constitution of Freemasonry , "

vvhich is now in the possession of this Iodge , vvith an autograph inscription by the donor . The VV . M . said he mentioned these facts not only as showing the deep root which Masopry had taken in Chichester , but also tlle lengthy connection which had existed between the Chichester Lodge and the noble famil y at Goodwood represented there that day by the S .

It was many years ago almost in a state of inanition but

vvas kept alive and finally launched on a more prosperous course by several brethren , of whom Bros . G . Smith , G . Molesworth , and C Goodeve , as survivors , might be meniioned . The last named , who was confined to his house by ill-health , had upon that day completed the fortieth year of his Masonic caieer .

The toast of " The Visitors " having been acknowledged by Bros . Jemmett and Heald , The Deputy Provincial Grand Master proposed "The Health of the Installing Master , " and took occasion to supplement what the W .
