the chair , announced to the lodge that he had appointed Bro . Rev . W . S . Pratt as Chaplain n ? the lodge , and he proceeded to invest him vvith the collar and jewel of his high office . The report from the Committee of the recent ball was read , and a profit of £ 4 1 is . gd . declared in favour of the Mason c Charities . After other formal business , the

lodge was closed . The brethren then retired to the Imperial Hotel , where Mrs . Stansfield had prepared a suitable repast . The usual loyal and Masonic leasts were honoured ; and "The Health of the W . M . " vvas proposed by Bro . G . Tortell , S . W ., and specially honoured on this—the occasion of his birthday .

HARTLEPOOL . —Harbour of Refuge Lodge ( No . 764 ) . —An emergency meeting of this lodge vvas held on Tuesday , the 17 th ult ., when a very large number of brethren assembled , amongst others being Bros . Simpson , P . J . G . D . ; and J . H . lackson , P . P . G . D .

Tbe business of the evening vvas to raise to the Third Degree Bro . W . B . Foxton , which ceremony was performed by theW . M . in a very careful and impressive manner , after which , on the closing of the lodge , the secret of such a large gathering was explained by Bro . Cameron rising , and , on behalf of the members of the lodge , presenting the W . M . with a handsomely-designed solid silver cradle , on the

occasion of the birth ot a Lewis during his Mastership and in the Queen ' s Jubilee year . In ^ making the presentatation , which vvas quite unexpected on the part of the W . M ., Bro . Col . Cameron , said It must be very gratifying to the Queen that her subjects united so universally to celebrate her Jubilee last year . The ceremony at Westminster Abbey vvas one that vvould

for ever remain in the memory of those vvho were present , as it was the undoubted proof of their affection and loyalty to her Majesty . There had also been some local events connected with the celebration of considerable interest to the town . Among others vvas the laying the foundationstone of their municipal building with Masonic honours , a ceremony but seldom witnessed , as it vvas a very unusual

thing for permission to be given for Masons to met before the public . But permission was given , and given readily , and he ( Bro . Cameron ) , in his position as Chairman of trie Commissioners , and as a Past Warden of the province , had the honour to lay the stone . The success of the arrangements , which were carried out in a very admirable manner , were mainly owing to the attention paid to the details by

Bro . Olsen , vvith the assistance of the sister lodge , Stranton . Bro . Olsen had also identified himself vvith the Masonic Charities , and , as witnessed that evening , had been very proficient in the work of the lodge . These vvere qualities which raised him very high in their esteem . But , beside these , during his year of Mastership a very interesting event had occurred in his family circle , a son being born on

the very day on vvhich the foundation-stone vvas laid , vvhich prompted the brethren to avail themselves of the opportunity of testifying their high esteem of him as a man , as a Mason , and as a Master . It had been decided by members of the lodge to celebrate the event which he had just alluded to by presenting Bro . Olsen with a silver cradle . He had been asked to make the presentation , and had

considerable pleasure in so doing . Ihe money was subscribed voluntarily , and no systematic canvass had been made . Bro . Cameron then presented the cradle to Bro . Olsen . Bro . Hans B . Olsen , W . M ., in reply , remarked that to say that he was very much surprised vvould not express his feelings at that moment , and , to adopt a very common expression— "You might knock me down with a feather . "

When he came to the lodge that evening he was surprised to see so many brethren present , but now he knew the reason . After the very flattering remarks vvhich had been made , and vvhich vvere totally undeserved , he felt that he WBS unable to do more than simply thank them . He took a deep interest in the lodge , and vvould continue to do all in his power to promote its prosperity , as well as Masonry

at large . He was exceedingly obliged to Bro . Cameron for his kindly remarks , and could assure him and the brethren that he received the present in the same spirit in vvhich it was offered . He would only add that if his son should grow up to manhood , he vvould esteem it an honour to tell him how it vvas that the cradle came into their family . The brethren afterwards sat down to a substantial

supper , presided over by the VV . M . After the usual loyal toasts had been given and duly honoured , the W . M . proposed "The Health of the Newlyraised Brother" in very cordial terms , and expressed the great pleasure he felt in welcoming to the Masonic body one whom he had long known and esteemed . Bro . Foxton , in reply , thanked the W . M . and brethren

for the honour done him , and , in a very humorous speech , referring to the long and intimate friendship vvhich had existed between the W . M . and himself , now deepened by closer ties , felt that , being fully entered on the Masonic roll , he would do all he possibly could to perform his duty as a Mason , and faithfully serve in any position allotted to him .

Bro . C S . Lane , P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the W . M . " in a brief and effective speech . The toast was drunk to heartily , and Bro . Olsen , W . M ., responded , thanking the brethren for their hearty support and co-operation , and assured them that at all times he vvould use his best endeavours to carry out the principles of the Order , and secure the harmony and prosperity of

the lodge . He would remind them that , as representing the Province of Durham , he vvas serving as Steward for the Centenary Festival ot the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , to be held in May , and that he would be supported by four other brethren of their Iodge , vvho also vvere going as Stewards on that occasion , one of whom vvas the brother

whom he had raised that evening , Bro . Foxton , who had thus early in his Masonic life shown his interest by his desire to know something of and qualifying himself as a Life Governor of one of our Charities . He should be glad to receive , and no doubt existed in his mind but that he vvould have their assistance and support towards such a very excellent and deserving object .

The W . M . then proposed "The Health of the Visitors , " of whom be was pleased to see such a good number around him , and whilst they gave them a very hearty welcome he could not , as time vvas passing rapidly , ask them all to respond , but vvould name Bro . J . Horsley , of St . Helen's Lodge , Bro . R . W . Simpson , of Stranton Lodge , and Bro . lackson , ol the Philanthropy Lodge , to vvhich each of those

brethren suitably responded . Other toasts followed , and a very pleasant evening vvas spent , the proceedings being enlivened by some excellent music and singing , under the leadership of Bro . Hurworth , the Organist to the Iodge . The cradle bears the following inscription : "Presented

to Brother Hans B . Olsen , W . M ., by brethren of Harbour of Refuge Lodge , No . 764 , in commemoration ot the birth of a 'Lewis' and the Queen ' s Jubilee , 1 S 87 . " Bros . Sinclair , P . M ., and Baumann , P . M ., acted as Secretary and Treasurer to the Presentation Committee , and by their exertions the whole of the proceedings vvere a great success .

The minutes of the last meeting vvere read and confirmed . There vvere three candidates , who vvere initiated respectively by Bros . A . Grice , W . M . ; Hollier , P . M . ; and Suthern , P . M ., P . P . G . Dir . of Cer . As this was the first meeting after the installation , the VV .

Master is to be congratulated upon such a commencement , and we sincerely wish him every success during his year of office . There vvas a good attendance of officers and brethren , who , after the labour was ended , adjourned to the festive board , vvhen a very happy evening vvas spent . The usual loyal and other toasts vvere given and responded to vvith hearty goodwill .

The ceremony concluded with Ihe usual addresses , and vvhen " Hearty good wishes" had been expressed , the lodge vvas closed .

A capital banquet , prepared by , and served under the superintendence of , Mrs . Stopford , vvas partaken of by the brethren , after which the usual loyal and Masonic toasts vvere proposed by the W . M . and drunk by the brethren . Bros . R . Caldwell , P . P . G . Swd . Br ., and E . G . Simpson , W . M . 2144 , P . G . U . Cheshire , responded for "The Provincial Grand Officers . "

Bro . VV . W . Dawson , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , proposed "The Health of the W . M ., " and in so doing said he felt sure from having carefully watched Bro . Russell during the time he had served the various offices , that he had the welfare of his lodge at heart , and would do his utmost to promote its interests and prosperity . They had witnessed him ascend to his present exalted position from the lowest ruck of the

ladder , and were fully convinced he would perforin his duties of W . M . with the same zeal as he had done the subordinate offices . They all highly respected their W . M ., and necessaril y had learned to love him . The visiting brethren might think this vvas excess of adulation on his ( Bro . Dawson's ) part , but he assured them that such vvere the feelings of every member of the Strangeways Lodge , and

he therefore felt great pleasure in asking all present to rise and drink to the health of Bro . Russell , and wish hiin a happy and prosperous year of office . ' 1 he brethren readily complied with this request , and Bro . Russell , in reply , after thanking Bro . Dawson and the brethren , said he vvould endeavour to merit their appreciation , and do his utmost to promote good feeling and

harmony amongst them . During a period of ioyearshehad never received anything but kindness from the members of the Strangeways Lodge . He had served under seven W . Masters during the 10 years , and he said it with pride and without egotism that he had endeavoured to perform every office vvith credit , and had only been absent from the lodge meetings on three occasions . He had entered the lodge ,

figuratively speaking , poor and penniless , but was now made wealthy through the occupancy cf the W . M . 's chair , which he hoped he should fill with satisfaction to them all and credit to himself . If he spoke for an hour he could not say more than in simple but sincere language— "Brethren , I thank you . " Bro . J . Andrew , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . Br ., proposed "The

Health of the I . P . M ., Bro . Slatter , " in felicitous terms , and the brethren drank it vvith enthusiasm , after vvhich Bro . Slatter replied in appropriate language . " The Visitors " vvas proposed by the W . M ., Bro . Russell , and duly responded to . Several other toasts were honoured , and the evening's enjoyment vvas much enhanced by some excellent glees and

solos from Bros . Robinson , Baron , Wilkinson , and W . Smith . We had almost omitted to mention that the W . M . inaugurated his presidency of the lodge by presenting new gauntlets and collars for the three chairs , and a vote of thanks was deservedly awarded for his kindness .
