The attention of tlie Brethren is called to HTHE CANCER HOSPITAL ( founded 1851 ) . A —The late ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY , in a sermon preached by His Graceon behalf of this Hospital , said : " There is no disease morepitiable than that lo which this Institution is specially devoted . From the first symptoms an attack one long course has commonly been prognesticated—oj fearful looking-for of a lingering progress towards a death oj anguish . Could the greatness of the suffering tc laid before you—could you le shown its severity , so as to see it iti its true proportions and natural colours—no one endued wilh Ihe feelings of humanity could resist the spectacle ; they would Ihink all they possessed a trifling sacrilice if , at such a price , they could mitigate such misery ; and yet they know that these sufferings exist as surely as if they were spread before their eyes . This , therefore , is a case in which I may justly ask your literal contributions , that Ihe relief afforded by this Hospital may more nearly approach thc amount of misery il endeavours I " remove . " In consequence of the severe nature of this disease it has recently been found necessary to face the whole of th ' wards with glazed tiles , causing a heavy expenditure and a great drain upon the funds of tlie Hospital .
