SWANS AND THE DESTRUCTION OF FISH SPAWN . —Considerable dissatisfaction is felt among London and up-river anglers at the refusal of the authorities this year to lemove the barren swans from the Thames during the fish spawning season . It is feared that much ova will as a result be again destroyed , and , as efforts are just now being made to improve Thames angling by restocking at considerable cost , it is hoped the Lord Chamberlain and the Dyers' and Vintners' Companies , to whom the swans belong , will see fit to alter their decision .

A NEW MEDAL , styled the India Medal for 1 S 95 , with separate clasps for the relief and defence of Chitral , has been sanctioned by the authorities . The medal will take the place of the 1 S 54 frontier medal , and will be awarded f jr future operations on the frontier . AMONG THE NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS for excursionists on Bank Holiday not the least successful in drawing visitors was Windsor Castle , the State Apartments of which were thrown open at 11 a . m ., and were visited during the day by no less than 5971 persons .

In addition , there were large consignments of cut tulips and hyacinths from Holland .

THE Q UEEN will bring her visit to the Continent to a conclusion at the end of the present month , returning to Windsor Castle on the evening of Thursday , the 30 th inst . Early in May her Majesty will spend a few days at Buckingham Palace and it is not improbable that she may give a garden party in the grounds ol the Palace early in July , a few days before the Royal wedding . A NEW MEDAL , styled the India Medal for 1 S 95 , with separate clasps for the relief and defence of Chitral , has been sanctioned by the authorities . The medal will take the place of the 1 S 54 frontier medal , and will be awarded f jr future operations on the frontier . AMONG THE NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS for excursionists on Bank Holiday not the least successful in drawing visitors was Windsor Castle , the State Apartments of which were thrown open at 11 a . m ., and were visited during the day by no less than 5971 persons .
A GAME OF LIVING WHIST will be played in the King ' s Hall , Holborn Restaurant on Saturday , the iSth instant , in aid of the funds of the Voluntary Schools of St ! Peter's , London Docks . The Duke and Duchess of Sutherland and Viscount and Viscountess Halifax will , it is expected , be among the spectators . THE RETURNS from Covent Garden show that during Thursday of last week six and a half tons of cut flowers arrived at the market , while before 11 a . m . on Saturday last there were delivered over four tons from the Scilly Isles and Cornwall , Nice , and the South of France . In addition , there were large consignments of cut tulips and hyacinths from Holland .
AT THE EARLY CELEDRATION on Easier Eve in the Chapel ot St . Sepulchre at St . Mary Magdalene's , Paddington , the offertory was found to include a donation of £ 2000 from an anonymous contributor , for the purpose of extinguishing a debt of that amount on the church . The fact of this munificent cffeiirg having been made was mentioned by the vicar at the morning service on Sunday last .
THE OLYMPIC GAMES were revived at Athens on Monday , and were witnessed by immense crowds of spectators , the members of the Royal Family being present . A number of contests were brought off on Tuesday , a series of athletic events being contested , the winners in nearly every contest being English or Americans . Only one Greek competitor was placed—in putting the weight , for which he took second prize .
THE Q UEEN will bring her visit to the Continent to a conclusion at the end of the present month , returning to Windsor Castle on the evening of Thursday , the 30 th inst . Early in May her Majesty will spend a few days at Buckingham Palace and it is not improbable that she may give a garden party in the grounds ol the Palace early in July , a few days before the Royal wedding . In the event of her Majesty deciding not to do so , there will be such a function at Marlborough House .
THH 27 TH ANNUAL SESSION of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Good Templars was held at the Cambridge Hall , Southport , on Monday . The report showed an aggregate of adult membership of 52 , 664 in 1395 lodges , and a profit of £ 30 ( 5 on the trading department . A sum of , CioS 2 had also been received towards the extinction of the debt on the Good Templar and ' 1 empcrance Orphanage at Sunbury-on-Thames and on office buildings . In the evening a public demonstration was held , under the presidency of the Mayor of Southport .

LORD MAYOR , Sir Walter Wilkin , proceeded in state to Christ ' s Church , Newgate-street , on Tuesday afternoon , in order to attend Divine service and hear the Spital Sermon preached by the Bishop of Salisbury . His lordship was attended by Bro . Alderman Vaughan Morgan , Treasurer of Christ ' s Hospital ; Bro . Sheriff Cooper , Bro . Sir John B . Monckton ( Town Clerk ) j and the Sword Bearer , Mace Bearer , and City Marshall in their robes . The boys of Christ's Hospital filled the galleries , and had previously visited his lordship at the Mansion House and been regaled with buns , wine , and lemonade , while each Grecian received a guinea , each junior Grecian half-a-guinea , each monitor half-a-crown , and each of the rank and file one shilling .

THE MOSAICS AT ST . PAUL ' S . —Shortly after noon on Saturday las ' , the lastsheet was removed trom the roof of the choir of St . Paul ' s Cathedral , and the magnificent mosaic woik accomplished under the personal di : cclion of Mr . W . B . Richmond , R . A . j was exposed to view . Some hundreds of people were present at the tunc , and the work as seen frcm the floor of the Cathedial , although in a very dull light , was universally admired . The Dean , who naturaily feels proud cf the woik , took especial delight in pointing out to friends the different leatures in the various groups . The service in the
aiternoon was attended by the Bishop of London and the Dean , all the Canons , with the exception of the Bishop of Stepney , who is abroad , and many of the Prebendaries . A procession , headed by the men who had been employed on the woik , was formed at tne west end , and duiing its progress into the choir the hjmn , " Blessed City , Heavenly Salem , " was sung . The Loid Mayor ar . d Lady Mayoress , who arrived from Brighton , attended in Slate , accompanied by ihe Shenffs and several mtmbtrsof the Corporation . Prior to the commencement of evensong , Gouned ' s "Te Deum "—a composition seldom heard in this country—was sung , followed by an antiphon , composed especially for the occasion .
THE ROYAL OIISERVATORY FOR SCOTLAND . —The Secretary for Scotland , Lord Balfour of Burleigh , on Wednesday foimally opened the ntw observatory , which has been elected on the south-eastcin slope of Blacklord Hill , Edinburgh , and is to take the place of the old observatory on Calton Hill as the Royal Obseivatory for Scotland . A large and representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen were present . The company was received in the optical room , where the Astronomer Royal ior Scotland , Piofessor Copelandhaving made a short historical statementLord Balfour t ' eclared the
obser-, , vatory open for the teaching of astronomy on university lines . Having referred to the connection with the movement which his predecessors in the Scotch Office , the Marquis ol Lothian and Sir George Trevelyan , had had , he recalled the fact that it was n ° yeais since the Chair of Astronomy was founded in connection with Edinburgh University . The foundation of the Astronomical Institution , which afterwards became the look
Royal Obseivatory , followed a few years later . He thought they were entitled to forward and prophecy a brilliant future for the new observatory , and that many generalions would profit by the labours of Piofessor Copeland and the munificence of Lord Crawford . Lord Crawford then moved a vote of thanks to Lord Balfour . Sir Robert S . Ball ( Cambridge ) seconded , and the motion was carried . Lord Balfour having rep hedj the company were conducted over the building .
