Bro . Sir J * B . MONCKTON , in replying to the toast , said : The Chairman had most eloquently proposed the toast , but Bro . Hedges had made a speech that evening , although it was a long one , which was interesting , and as an oration it was magnificent , and they had nothing but words of gratitude for it . Those on the Board of Management were the Stewards of the brethren , and carried out the work the brethren had set

them to do . His lordship had said it was well done . He ( Sir J . Monckton ) must say one thing—that as long as the Craft gave its funds in so splendid a manner , the Board of Management would have nothing to do but to accept the work thoroughly . ( Applause . ) He then proposed "The . Health of the Chairman , the Pro Grand Master , " and what came home to many of them " The Provincial Grand Master for Kent . " There was no

better Mason than his lordship , as those who attended the Grand Lodge knew , and the brethren of his province would not change him for the best man in the world . In proposing his lordship ' s health he could not omit one word of reference to her ladyship . On Monday she presented the prizes , which was done with a charm and graciousness which would last for years to come . The eloquent speech which her ladyship made right off her own bat was a grand object lesson to the Girls that woman has a tongue , and

knows how to use it . The speech of Lady Amherst was being printed , and he was quite sure that Bro . Hedges would be glad to give copies . It ought to be framed , and the Girls would have a copy . They were told to do in after life how to win a husband and keep him . ( Laughter . ) Let him say one thing more before he sat down . The prizes had been distributed . Lad y Amherst took the prizes to the Girls who were in the infirmary , to the little one in bed , and gave her the prize herself . That was a true womanly trait if ever there was one . ( Applause . )

Earl AMHERST in reply said it gave him great pleasure to be there on behalf of one of the great Masonic Institutions- He had to thank all the brethren who had sent up sums which they had heard recorded . He had to thank the Province of Kent , not for the first time , on these occasions , for having backed him up and made his Chairmanship , a marked success . They had been good enough on this occasion

to give more than ; £ 6 ooo to the charity , and he thanked them sincerely for it . To the other Stewards he recorded his grateful thanks for their support . They had had a great subscription which would enable them to put by to meet future lean years . His position of Pro Grand . Master and Provincial Grand Master , entailed certain duties , but it was well worth a man ' s while to do those duties to the utmost on behalf

of such an institution as the Craft , by which they showed their utility to thc outer world . They showed by the Institutions they kept up what a strong body they were . It was well worth any man ' s time and trouble to do all he could on behalf of such a glorious institution as the Craft . He thanked the brethren for making his duties very light and very pleasant . In all lodges he went to he found the cordial and hearty support of all the Masons he met , which encouraged him to do all he coald during the few

years that he mi ght remain as their Pro Grand Master . ( Applause ) . Bro . W . C . LUITON ( Mayor of Bradford ) proposed " The Other Masonic Institutions . " West Yorkshire once sent up . £ 6130 ; but that had now been exceeded by Kent . West Yorkshire must now emulate that example . He would endeavour to stir up West Yorkshire . Bro . J . M . MCLEOD , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . I . B ., responded . The Bays ' School Festival would be on June 2 (> th , when Bro . W . Beach , M . P ., would preside , and he asked the brethren on that occasion to beat the Girls ' record .

The brethren then adjourned to the Temple , where a concert under the direction of Bro . Arthur Barlow was given . The artistes were Mrs . Helen Trust , Miss Emily Foxcroft , Bro . W ills Page , Bro . Arthur Barlow , Mi * Louise Nanney ( solo violin ) , Bro . Alexander Watson ( recitations ) , Bro . Mel B . Spurr ( musical sketch ) , and Bro . Herbert L . Cooke ( at the piano ) . The Grand pianofortes were kindly lent by Messrs . S . and P . Erard ( Bro . Daniel Mayer ) . ? —

ANALYSIS OF THE RETURNS .

With such an array of figures as the foregoing there is no need for any pf ** face , and we plunge at once m medias res . The number of ladies and brethren who took part in Wednesday ' s Festival as Stewards was 68 9 , or less by between 70 and 80 than last year , but the sum total they raised was greater by about 1

London , with 279 Stewards , compiled . t ' 10 , 266 17 s . 6 d ., and the Provinces and a few Foreign Stations , represented by 410 Stewards , returned i ' 16 , 252 igs . 9 d-i the total from the two sections of the Board being £ 26 , 519 17 s . 3 d ., or rather more than CIOOQ in excess of what was subscribed at the Benevolent Festival in February .

LONDON , as we have said , contributed towards this grand result i ' 10 , 266 17 s . 6 d ., the number , of its representatives being 279 , of whom O 7 were unattached , 10 ladies , and one -
