Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

The Worshipful Master in the chair , in commenting on the foregoing list , pointed out its satisfactoryfeharacter , as evincing the interest taken in the work of the lodge by eminent brethren in all quarters of the world . He thought the quality of the new members was no less encouraging than the quantity , as the list contained the names of many well known students , of six Grand or Past Grand Masters ,

of a large number of high Masonic officials , and of two lodges and one Supreme Council . Indeed , hardly a name mentioned but was distinguished for one cause or another , and he wished to emphasize the fact that the success of the lodge thus far was greatly owing to thc energy and administrative ability of the Secretary , in whose fertile brain had originated the idea of forming an outer , or correspondence

circle , the ever-growing members of which afforded thc happiest augury for the promotion of Masonic research . In saying this , however , he had no wish to detract from the eminent services Bro . Speth acknowledged he received in carrying it out from several members , notably Bro . Hughan , to whose exertions , carrying such deservedly great weight from his well-established reputation , the adhesion of so many American brethren must reasonably

be ascribed . The Secretary then announced a no less satisfactory and remarkable list of donations to the lodge library . By Bro . Cramer , of Berlin , the current numbers of " Latomia ; " by Bro . The Secretary was instructed to suitably acknowledge these presents . Bro . Rev . A . F . A . Woodford had also forwarded his photograph for the lodge album . The following brethren were proposed as joining members

of the lodge from the chair , and seconded by the acting S . VV ., viz .: Bros , the Rev . C . J . Ball , B . A . Oxon , Chap-Iain of Lincoln ' s Inn , author of a Hebrew Grammar , Hebrew Primer , " Articles on the Syriac Authors in the Dictionary of Christian Biography , " and many other learned treatises ; and the Hon . Sir Henry J . Burford-Hancock , Chief Justice and District Grand Master of

Gibraltar , author of a "Treatise on International Fishery Laws , " 1 SS 6 , which was awarded a gold medal by the late Emperor Napoleon III ., and of many contributions to periodical literature . The usual amount of lodge correspondence was next attended to , and the brethren were at length enabled to settle down to the chief business of the evening , viz ., the

consideration of a paper read by Bro . W . J . Hughan , of Torquay , P . G . D ., on the "Connecting Links between Ancient and Modern Freemasonry ( rom a A " wn-Masonic Standpoint . " It is needless to say that the lecture received the intelligent attention which the world-wide repute of our brother entitled him to . The object of the paper , as indicated by its title , was to demonstrate that no thoughtful

enquirer , even if unaided by Masonic teaching , could refuse to candidly acknowledge that our present system of Craft Masonry is directly derived from the building fraternities of the Middle Ages ; that its connection with mediaeval Freemasonry is unbroken , its title to the inheritance indisputable , and thc proofs thereof palpable to all the world , and independent of esoteric aid to their comprehension . A

perfect master of all the details , Bro . Hughan marshalled his facts , documents , authors , and proofs with consummate skill , as was evinced by the total inability of a critical audience acquainted with the subject to pick a single hole in his argument . An interesting discussion on some subsidiary points nevertheless arose , and was maintained by Bros . Speth ,

Rylands , Gould , Lane , Mathers , and Kelly , in the course of which Bro . Hughan had many opportunities of demonstrating his intimate knowledge and ready grasp of every phase of the subject , and his accurate memory of dates and other minutiaa . A vote of thanks was , of course , tendered , and gracefully acknowledged .

The W . M . in the chair desired to express , on behalf of the lodge , their gratification that since the last meeting two of their members had received the collars of Grand Officers , Bro . Bywater having been appointed to the office of Grand Sword Bearer , and Bro . W . H . Rylands having been sent

up by the Lodge of Antiquity as one of the Grand Stewards of the year , and to both these brethren therefore he tendered the congratulations of the lodge on their well-merited preferment . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to Freemasons' Tavern to partake of a frugal meal in common .

UNITED NORTHERN COUNTIES LODGE ( No . 2128 ) . —The usual quarterly meetingof this lodge was held at SA , Red Lion-square , on Thursday , the 2 nd inst . Bro . W . F . Smithson , P . P . G . D . W . G . D . C . Berks and Bucks , was elected as a joining member . There were three candidates for initiation , all of whom were successful at the ballot , and afterwards received their First Degree , the ceremony being gone through in an impressive and able

manner by the W . M . The lodge was honoured by a visit from Bro . the Rev . Dr . Smyth , Grand Chaplain of England . Two Committees were appointed—one to consider and report on lodge affairs generally , and the other to arrange for a picnic this summer . Two candidates for initiation having been proposed , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to supper at the Inns of Couit Hotel , where a most agreeable evening was spent .

REGENT'S PARK LODGE ( No . 2202 ) . —An emergency meeting of the above lodge was held at the York and Albany , ; Gloucester Gate , Regent's Park , on Wednesday , the 25 th ult ., when there were present Bros , H . Smith , P . M . 1744 . The lodge was opened in due form . By request of the W . M . of the Cama Lodge , Bro . R . H . Cama , who will shortly be leaving England , was raised to the Sublime

Degree of M . M . The ceremony , by permission of thc VV . M ., being performed in a most perfect manner by Bro . James Kew , P . M . A ballot was then taken for Messrs . F . J . Holden , VV . J . Holden , and G . Clampitt , which proving unanimous , they were initiated into the mysteries of Freemasonry , the ceremony being very impressively performed by Bro . N . D . Fracis , P . M .

Bro . R . H . Cama returned thanks to the W . M . for his kindness in allowing him to be raised to the Third Degree in that lodge . A unanimous vote of thanks was ordered to be recorded on the minutes to Bro . D . P . Cama , W . M ., for his very handsome presents , which consisted of a bible and cushion , and square and compasses , in silver , to Bro . Kew , P . M ., for three pedestals for the candlesticks , and to

Bro . F . J . Holden , their first initiate , for a very handsome banner , which was admired by all . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting table , where ample justice was done to the good things provided for them by their worthy host . After the removal of the cloth the loyal and Masonic toasts were given and received in usual Masonic style .

The toast of " The Grand Olficers" was responded to by Bro . W . A . Scurrah , I . P . M . 2040 , P . P . G . Supt . of Wks . Middx , who afterwards proposed in eulogistic terms "The Health of the W . M ., " which was received with great enthusiasm . Bro . D . P . Cama , in reply , said as this was only an emergency meeting he was extremely pleased to see how well

he was supported by the members and visitors . This was only the second meeting of the lodge , but he hoped it would be a representative one , he had been W . M , of six other lodges , but he felt prouder of being W . M . of this lodge than any other , and if the brethren would only work in harmony with him and amongst themselves he was sure it would be the most successful in London ;

and as for the working , he could see that there were few to touch it . They had amongst their members some of the best workers in Freemasonry , and men who , by their example , would make others do the same . He felt that he was only the ornamental member , but they would find that he would be a working one in the future . He knew he belonged to a country which was a conquered one ; but he

was proud to belong to it , and to claim as his Sovereign the beloved Queen and Empress of India . She had been a good mother and a good Queen , and they as Freemasons should feel proud of being under her rule . . The Worshipful Master then proposed "The Health of

the Initiates , " and said he was pleased to see that the Regent ' s Park Lodge had such good members as they appeared to be . He had noticed them during that evening , and had seen how the ceremony had impressed them , and hoped they would think of what they had gone through that eveninp-.

This toast having been responded to , the toast of " The Visitors " was next given , and received in the usual hearty manner , their responses showing their appreciation of the welcome accorded to them . During the evening several of the brethren enlivened the proceedings with some capital songs and recitations .

HUDDERSFIELD . —Lodge of Truth ( No . 521 ) . —The regular meeting of this lodge was held at Freemasons' Hall , Fitz William-street , on Friday , the 3 rcl inst ., when the following officers and Past Masters were present with other members of the lodge : Bros .

Smith , P . M .

Bro . D . P . Cama , in reply , said as this was only an emergency meeting he was extremely pleased to see how well

he was supported by the members and visitors . This was only the second meeting of the lodge , but he hoped it would be a representative one , he had been W . M , of six other lodges , but he felt prouder of being W . M . of this lodge than any other , and if the brethren would only work in harmony with him and amongst themselves he was sure it would be the most successful in London ;

and as for the working , he could see that there were few to touch it .
