The minutes having been confirmed , the ballot was taken for Mr . James Stratton , and proving unanimous he was initiated . Bros . Swiss and Bull were then raised , both ceremonies being ably worked by Bro . Palmer and his

officers . The billot was then taken for W . M ., and Bro . Lawson , S . VV ., was unanimously elected amid the warm congratulations of every member of the lodge . Bro . Coupland was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Larder , Tyler . Bros . Scantlebury and Collins were elected to serve on the Audit Committee , and it was unanimously resolved "That , as some recompense for his valuable services as acting

VV . M . during the past 12 months , Bro . Palmershould be presented with a Life Governorship of one of the Institutions . " Bro . Palmer at first objected to receive that which he considered too much out of the lodge funds , but ultimately did , and suitably returned thanks . A circular was read from Bro . Spencer , Provincial Grand Secretary of Kent ,

relative to a wish of the Provincial Grand Master that 1000 guineas should be raised in the province for a perpetual presentation to one of the Institutions , and it was resolved"That the proposal receive the hearty support of the lodge . " It was also resolved , and carried unanimously , that a vote of sympathy be tendered to their esteemed Bro . lames S . Eastes , D . P . G . M ., on the great domestic

affliction he has recently sustained in the loss of his wife . There being nothing further before the lodge , it was closed in due form , and the brethren partook of refreshment . The usual loyal and Grand toasts having been honoured , that of "Earl Amherst , Provincial Grand Master , " was drunk with real enthusiasm . Bro . Penfold responded for the toast of "Bro . Eastes ,

D . P . G . M ., and the rest of the Provincial Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and in so doing said he had been a Provincial Grand Officer for two years , but would shortly have to retire among the Past Grand Officers . All things changed except Grand Lodge , for " men might come and men might go , but Grand Lodge went on for ever . " It certainly was a very great honour and privilege to be a

Provincial Grand Officer , and he felt that he was indebted to the lodge for having that dignity conferred upon him . There was always a great difficulty in selecting officers , and it might be some years before they had another collar in the Pattison Lodge . He did not know by what rule officers were selected by j but he knew that their noble Provincial Grand Master tried to give a fair share of the purple to

every lodge in the province . At times the toast was drank in a perfunctory manner , yet he knew that unless their Provincial Grand Master and Bro . Eastes were in accord witn all in the province , and especially with the Pattison Lodge , it would not be drank with the enthusiasm that it ever received at the hands of the brethren . With respect to their esteemed D . P . G . M ., Bro . Easteshe felt sure that

, their sympathies were with him in his bereavement , and they one and all sincerely hoped that T . G . A . O . T . U . would strengthen and support him under it . Bro . Palmer ( who is a genial and enthusiastic Mason ) was loudly cheered when he rose to respond for a heatty reception of his health . He said it was pleasant to know that his endeavours to carry out the duties entrusted to him

met with their approbation , and he desired to thank them for the . assistance and support he had always received from them during the present year . He was also pleased to know that it had been a very successful year , although not so successful , numerically , as the preceding one , as during mat year he had initiated iG good and worthy men into Masonry . In the present year he had initiated nine , and two

had joined the lodge . The Pattison Lodge had of late years been making great strides , as the following figures would show : In the years 1 S 82-3-4 the members numbered 93 ; the following year , 95 ; last year they had 110 members ; and this year they numbered 121 members good on ' £ books ; this increase would show the great progress me lod had madeespecially during the last two

ge , years . "wing the time he had presided over the lodge he had endeavoured to carry out the duties appertaining to the ™ ice in the best possible manner , trying to maintain the o'gnity of the chair , striving to preserve pure and unsullied the presti ge of the lodge , endeavouring to keep the unity aid

* brotherl y love which should at all times distinguish "H-n and Masons , and , above all , to hand down to his successor the warrant as unsullied and as unstained as when ne received it . Several other toasts followed , and the Tyler ' s toast conceded the proceedings .

The minutes of the lodge held on September 18 th , iSSS , and of the emergency meeting held on February 4 th , 1887 , were read and confirmed . Ballots were taken in favour of the admission of Messrs . Luther Schofield and Wm . H . Drew , and Mr . Luther Schofield , being in attendance , was introduced and initiated . Bros . VV . H . Several gentlemen were proposed as candidates for initiation . Bro . W . R . Vassila , P . G . Std . Br . Middx ., W . Middlesex . Notices of motion were given by Bro . J . Lawrence , S . W . ; J . J . Marsh , P . P . G . Std . Br . Middx ., I . P . M . ; and Frederick Walters , P . P . G . D . Middx ., P . 73 , and an old Royal Arch Mason , whose exaltation took place on May ist , 1 S 56 , announced that their dear and highly esteemed friend and brother , Comp . Joseph John Marsh , M . E . Z . 1326 , had on 14 th May Provincial Grand Chapter honours bestowed on him by being appointed P . A . G . D . C . He stated he was certain that that honour had been given to one whose conduct justly entitled him to it .

Only the day before he had been assisted by their Bro . J . J . Marsh in securing the election of the widow Mrs . George ( whose late husband—Bro . J . VV . George , P . P . G . O . Middlesex and P . M . —died at his ' post , being also Sec . 1309 , on 22 nd December , iSSG ) on the Female Annuity Fund . He ( as was usual with him whenever he took , up a case ) arrived early before mid-day at Freemasons' Hall , and

worked zealously with other friends to secure her election . Everyone seemed very pleased at his appointment , and he was warmly congratulated by all present . The Treasurer was absent , caused by a heavy domestic calamity . A letter of condolence was ordered to be sent him expressing the unanimous sympathy of the lodge . The Secretary made an eloquent appeal for support to the Masonic

Charities . He told them in forcible terms he must and would have Stewards for all three Charities in 18 S 8 . There was , as usual , a prompt and hearty response . Subject to certain conditions of Secretary's support these members were accepted as Stewards for iSSS—Bros . James Clark Goslin , A . D . C , Benevolent ; James Lawrence , S . W ., Boys . The Girls' , being its centenarian anniversary , he

intended to make a direct and special appeal for several Stewards—he hoped to be helped by thc Secretary , Bro . V . R . W . Hedges—whom he trusted to see present next time . There were those who were not present he knew would stand . He could not hope to again secure two members next year who would become Stewards to all three

Charities as they had done this year . Business ended , the lodge was closed . In consequence of illness at home the VV . M ., Bro . VV . R . Vassila , was unable to preside at the banquet table , and Bro . J . J . Marsh , I . P . M ., presided . All the toasis were duly given and responded to , and a pleasant evening was spent .

The lodge having been formally opened , the minutes of the preceding meeting were read and confirmed . The

Audit Committee's report , showing a substantial balance in favour of the lodge , was received and adopted , and ordered to be entered on the minutes . The installation ceremony was next proceeded with , and Bro . Hugh Marcus Hobbs , P . S . G . D . Surrey , having been presented as W . M . elect , was duly installed into the chair by the retiring VV . M ., Bro . Ranson . The following officers were appointed and

invested : Bro . F . T . Ridpath , S . W . ; J . Kilvington , J . W . ; VV . Foulsham , P . M ., Treasurer ; G . S . Horsnail , Sec . ; E . Samuel , S . D . ; R . G . Fleming , J . D . j S . M ., in a fluent and highly creditable manner .

All Masonic business having been transacted , the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to a substantial and well-served repast . The usual toasts were subsequently duly honoured , and received with the customary heartiness . The Worshipful Master having given " The Oueen and the Craft , " and "H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W .

Grand Master , " proposed "The Grand Officers , " and said they were honoured that evening with the presence of one of that body in the person of Bro . F . West , P . G . Stwd . As they were all aware , he was also the D . P . G . M . of Surrey , and all would agree that he perforins his duties with the utmost credit to himself and the satisfaction of the province . On many occasions it had been his privilege

to thank Bro . West for various acts of kindness , and when they considered that there were thirty-two lodges and twelve chapters in Surrey under his guidance , they would all understand that he was specially indebted to him for his presence on that occasion . Bro . Fred . West , D . P . G . M . Surrey , P . G . Stwd ., in reply , said it was a novel experience to have his name

associated with the toast of the Grand Officers , for usually he was asked to respond for the province to which he belonged . However , the W . M . had been kind enough to call upon him to reply for the Grand Officers , and he believed he might respond on that occasion . The Officers of Grand Lodge had many important duties to perform for the Craft , and he hoped they would have the assistance of

some of their number at the consecration of the chapter , in the formation of which the VV . M . had taken such a great interest . He was quite sure the Grand Officers looked with pleasure upon any Masonic meeting where the Masonic ritual was properly worked and the principles practised . That was done whenever Bro . Hobbs was connected with the work , for although he was comparatively a young

Mason , he had the capacity for working , and also had the facility for presiding over the lodge and engendering the true feeling of brotherly love . Under those circumstances he considered it a privilege to be present and be called upon to reply for the Grand Olficers , although he regretted there was not a more important member of that body present upon whom the duty would have devolved .

Bro . Kanson , I . P . M ., said the brethren were all aware that the toast he had to propose was "The Health of the W . M . " He considered it an honour that that duty should have fallen upon him , as it was tha first time he had had the privilege of proposing the health of the W . M . of that lodge . It afforded him considerable pleasure , for he had been associated with their W . M ., and had worked with him

in the interests of the Old England Lodge , and he was convinced the brethren would all join him in heartily drinking the health of Bro . Hugh M . Hobbs , VV . M ., and wishing him a prosperous and successful year of office . They possessed in their W . M . a gentleman and a good Mason , who was at all times ready and willing to assist a brother in any Masonic work in connection with that or any other

lodge , and one who was ever foremost in movements for charitable purposes . The work Bro . Hobbs had done in Masonry was known to all present , and he could remember with pleasure that when their W . M . was initiated he ( the I . P . M . ) performed the interesting work of J . D . He had for some time carried out the duties of Secretary in a manner that was beyond praise , and no further comment would be needed to ensure the toast an enthusiastic

reception . Bro . Hugh M . Hobbs , P . S . G . D . Surrey , W . M ., in reply , said that to a nervous man his position presented many difficulties , but it was with the greatest pleasure that he found himself W . M . of his mother lodge . It mattered not how many lodges one belonged to , there was always a peculiar feeling of regard and attachment / or

one ' s mother lodge , were the light of Masonry was first seen . Up to tbe present time he had received nothing but kindness and consideration from every member of the lodge , and he was especially pleased at this opportunity of noticing this interesting fact . He could not say , as was usually the case with occupants of the chair , that he had filled nearly every office in the lodge , for the only post he

had held was that of Secretary . It was a most unexpected pleasure , a short time ago , to find there was a likelihood of his occupying his present position . He then heard that Bro . Tarry had found his business engagements so heavy that it was impossible for him to go on , and he considered it was very much to his credit that he had decided to wait

and stand on one side until he was able to give time to the duties . Bro . Tarry was a young man , and if in time he came to them and expressed his desire to work in office , they would be only too pleased to see him in the chair , when he would no doubt carry out the duties in the same satisfactory manner he had the other offices he had held . On more than one occasion when Bro . Tarry was S . D . he

, their sympathies were with him in his bereavement , and they one and all sincerely hoped that T . G . A . O . T . U . would strengthen and support him under it .

Several other toasts followed , and the Tyler ' s toast conceded the proceedings .

worked zealously with other friends to secure her election .

D . j S . Clarke , I . G . j P . Budd , D . C . ; C . Tarry , Stwd . ; and VV . Lane , Tyler . The usual addresses were delivered by the Installing Master , Bro . Ranson , I . P .

D . he
