Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

was highly complimented on the way in which he had performed the important duties . Bro . Ridpath would have been in the chair , but was W . M . of another lodge . All he could say was that he would endeavour to carry out the duties to the best of his ability . He was afraid that as their I . P . M . had had plenty of work he should not have any candidatesbut was glad to hear their Secretary

pro-, pose a gentleman for initiation who was well known . He begged to tender his sincere thanks for the kind manner in which they had received him on that , the first occasion , as W . Master . Before he resumed his seat he would give them "The Visitors . " They were favoured with a numerous body of visiting brethren whom they were delighted to see , and he asked the members to show them ,

by the hearty manner in which they received the toast , that they were heartily welcome . It was a good thing to visit a lodge , and he had learned many things by those visits . It was carrying out one of the princip les of the Order"Brotherly Love , " and the more they visited the more likely they were to carry out that great principle . Bro . J . Streeter , in reply , saidhe was fiattered by the

honour conferred upon him by coupling his name with tne toast , and begged to return sincere thanks for the hearty reception accorded the visitors . It was not the first time he had visited them , for he was invited some time ago , when he spent a very pleasant evening , and made up his mind to accept every invitation he received to attend their lodge . He had been very pleased at the way in which the work

had been carried out , and the installation of the Worshipful Master had been performed in a highly creditable manner by the I . P . M . Bro . Ranson , I . P . M ., was ayoung Mason , and the difficulties he must have gone through in acquiring the necessary knowledge to perform that ceremony were very considerable , but to render it in such style reflected great credit upon him . Before he concluded he would pay

a tribute of respect to one of the founders . Their lodge had risen to its present high position under the guidance cf the old veteran , his esteemed friend , Bro . Foulsham , P . M ., Treas . So long as the bdge was guided by such men , so long would it continue to occupy a prominent position in the Craft . Bro . Pile , P . G . S . B . Surrey , also responded .

Bro . VV . VV . Morgan , P . M . 211 , having replied for "The Charities , " and made a strong appeal on behalf of the Institutions , The W . Master said it was his duly to propose " The Health of the Immediate Past Master . " He was sure they would all agree with him that perseverance , industry , and love of Masonry were characteristics of Bro . Ranson ,

I . P . M . There was no brother whom he knew that took a greater interest in the Craft or devoted more time and energy to it than the I . P . M . He had also paid some attention to the Charities , having represented them as Steward ior the Benevolent Institution , when he took up £ 63 . He had introduced into their lodge the work of rendering the charge to the Initiate , and the tracing hoard

lecture in the Third Degree . He was also the first W . M . of the Old England Lodge who had installed his successor with the exception of Bro . Foulsham . He had not over estimated his ability , but had now distinguished himself for his admirable rendering of the installation ceremony . Bro . Ranson left the chair with the esteem and regard ot all , and he ( the W . M . ) had the great pleasure of

presenting him with the P . M . s jewel which had been voted by the lodge . It was the earnest wish of all the members that Bro . Ranson would long be spared to wear it , and to assist the VV . M . in carrying out the work of their lodge . Bro . VV . H . Ranson , I . P . M ., said he did not know how to respond for the toast , for he was afraid he hardly deserved all the praise bestowed upon him by the VV . M .

They all knew how hard he had worked in Masonry , and that he had spent a great deal ot time in it . He could remember that when Bro . Foulsham came to him and asked him to take the office of I . G ., he told him he must work if he accepted the collar . He could safely say he had done so , for he started to work from that moment , and had been in office for the last six years . He had been a Mason

seven years , and he felt a gratification that he had done as much as he had . He was proud to be standing between two men like the W . M . and the Treasurer , and he hoped to be connected with such Masons for many years . He thanked them heartily for the handsome jewel , which he

should be proud to wear as a token o £ the regard felt for him by those he saw around the table . "The Past Masters" and "The Olficers" having been given , the Tyler ' s toast closed a successful meeting . During the evening an excellent programme of music was carried out under the direction of Bro . Kilvington .

SHANKLIN ( I . of W . )—Chine Lodge ( No . 1 SS 4 ) . —At a meeting of this lodge , held on Thursday , the 26 th ult ., the following were present : Bros . Alfred Greenham , P . M ., W . M . j John Bailey , P . A . G . D . C , I . P . M . ; F . Rayner , S . VV . ; James Conner , P . M ., as J . W . ; F . Cooper , P . P . G . S ., P . M ., Treas . ; L . Colenutt , Stc . ; A . F . Swayne , S . D . ; H . A . Matthews , J . D . ; J . VV .

Cantelow , I . G . j Mew , Tyler ; G . H . Matthews , R . Young , J . B . Middleton , and A . VV . Wadham . Visitor : Bro . H . Orchard . The minutes of the last regular meeting having been read and confirmed , Bro . A . VV . Wadham was passed to the Degree of F . C . b y Bro . Alfred Greenham , W . M . The W . M . then rose and proposed a resolution for the transfer

of the mortgage to Bro . McQueen at a reduced rate of interest , and entered fully into the details of the financial position of the lodge , showing the number of members a few years back was not enough to bear the expenses , or even the interest money and Grand Lodge dues . He pointed out that the efforts during Bro . Bailey ' s and his own two years of office would reduce the debt £ 400 , so far as interest was

concerned , and after this year £ 19 that was previously paid for interest would now be used to extinguish capital in the form of voluntary loans , lent free of interest . The loan of last year by Bro . Bailey and himself he hoped to extinguish by a method which he should announce at the banquet table , and which would free the lodge altogether of that liability , and he tendered Bro . Bailey his very

sincere thanks lor the earnest manner which he helped to carry out his various schemes to reduce the debt . This year he was determined to get the £ 100 under the Jubilee Commemoration Fund , and if any balance was required subsequently to be made up , he intended to create a voluntary loan of £ 2 ios . only , which would be repaid by the interest now paid to the present mortgagee , and be voted half-yearly . This would in no way rob the lodge of its

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

funds , and soon extinguish this small loan , if it becomes necessary in the autumn to raise it . The VV . Master then announced that he had received a donation and the patronage from the R . W . Provincial Grand Master of Upper Lanarkshire , Bro . CapSain Hector M'Lean , to the Chine Lodge Jubilee Commemoration Fund , and read a letter , in which he expressed his pleasure to help the lodge . Bro .

Hector M'Lean was also a patron of the Masonic Exhibition , and attended the opening of it . He was also present at the banquet , and it wa > a proud assertion to make that three Provincial Grand Masters sat 011 either side of him . Bro . Conner was his Provincial Grand Secretary when he lived in Scotland , and introduced him by letter last year . This letter read proved to him that his interest in the

Exhibition and his reception by thelodgehas not been forgotten , and he felt oroud that , in addition to the honour of the name of their Prov . Grand Master , Bro . VV . VV . B . Beach , M . P ., on the marble memorial to be erected , they would have a Scotch Prov . Grand Master also . He had also the pleasure to announce a similar donation from Bro . Count des Geveys , P . M ., whose interests in the exhibition and that

lodge it would be impossible forhim to speak too highly of ; also a very old friend of the lodge , Bro . George Kerning , P . M ., P . G . D . Middx . Bro . Kenning's kindness to that lodge since he lirst visited them , and the hearty approval given to all their efforts , was very gratifying to him as Master , and must be to all of you . Another similar donation , and another honour to the lodge , remains to be

told . The present Grand Treasurer , Bro . Eve , has sent his patronage to their Fund , that was a very great honour , for they had the singular position that Bro . Cama gave his patronage when he was Grand Treasurer , which entitles him to rank on the memorial as such , and now Bro . Eve does the same . He should , therefore , put them both as Grand Treasurers , with the year , after their title , in which they

held the office . That was , indeed , a great honour to the lodge and to him , and he felt grateful and proud that their efforts to help themselves were not only recognised , but aided by such Grand Masoni as they would have on their Commemoration Fund . Bro . John Bailey , P . M ., P . A . G . D . C , seconded the

motion of the W . M . He had no fear that the balance would be forthcoming now the amount subscribed amounted to nearly £ * So , and several prominent members of the lodge would yet subscribe when they returned to Shanklin . He did his best to help the VV . M ., and lie looked on the future of Chine Lodge with more hope and far less anxiety than ever he did before .

The Worshipful Master then rose and said it gave him much pleasure to present from Bro . John Chapman , P . M ., P . P . G . D . Devon , his photograph . It had been promised him some time ago , and he felt sure it would be one valued by all . Bro . Chapman had visited their lodge several times , and this highly complimentary letter shows his remembrance of Chine Lodge will be a pleasant one . He

should always remember his kindness to him , coming from Ventnor at some risk to his health to deliver his lecture on the "Great Pyramid , " and which resulted so financiall y favourable . Again at his installation this year he generously gave £ 5 5 s . to the Jubilee Fund , and he believed to their brethren at Ventnor he was equally generous and joined their lodge . He only wished it had fallen to their

lot for him to have resided here , for he felt quite sure they could have relied on his aid in any enterprise for the reduction nf the debt , which he had had several conversations with him about , and he heartily approved of his effort , and was helping him among his friends in the North . He proposed that they convey their thanks to him , and assure him

he is not likely to be forgotten in Chine Lodge . The resolution was seconded by Bro . F . Rayner . S . W ., and carried unanimously . The W . W . having proposed a candidate for initiation , the lodge was closed , and the members adjourned to the banqueting room to their usual repast .

HANLEY . —Gordon Lodge ( No . 2149 ) . —The installation of the W . M . of this lodge , Bro . J . Lovell Hamshaw , took place on Wednesday , the 25 th ult . The ceremony was performed by Bro . ] . Bromiey , P . P . S . G W the retiring VV . M ., assisted by Bros . T . Taylor , P . P S G . W . ; B . Piercey , P . P . S . G . W . ; F . Mountford , P . P . G . O . ; and J . B . Ashwell . Amongst the visitors at the ceremony was the R . W . D . P . G . M ., Bro . Col . Foster

S . Gough . After the close of the lodge , the brethren adjourned to the Council Chamber of the Town Hall , where a banquet was provided by Mr . Higgatt , of the Piccadill y Restauiant Bro . Munro supplying the wines . The W . M . presided ' . After the repast , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured .

The Silverdale Glee Part y added to the pleasure of the proceedings by contributing choice musical selections . Among the visitors were Bros . T . Bickley , P . P . T . G VV R . Tooth , P . P . G . * y 1 — Some who are outside the pale of Freemasonry are prone to declare that gastronomy engrosses the attention of its members . The brethren of the ancient Crait know better , and lhat ( he noble cause of Charity , without which we ate told religion is a sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal , is one of the foremost objects of the great

organisation which in England has at its head the Heir A pparent to the Throne , who a few years since , on the occasion of a visit to Portsmouth , was received by the members of the Saxe-Weimar Lodge , in whose inaugural ceremonial the Duke of Connaught , now Provincial Grand Master of

Sussex , took a leading part . At the meeting of the Grand Lodge of England , which is to be held in London next Wednesday , a brother will propose a grant of £ ' Gooo to the Masonic Charities ( three in number ) , another £ 1000 each , as a special Jubilee offering , in addition to the large sum anticipated as the result of the great meeting to be held on the 13 th proximo . —Portsmouth Times .

Munro supplying the wines . The W . M . presided ' . After the repast , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured .
