His Royal Hig hness arrived at the Masonic Hall at 9 . 30 , attended bv his equerry , Capt . the Hon . A . K . F . Greville ,

and , after the usual preliminaries , was , in company with Captain Greville and Bro . J . A . Deiguino , perfected in the Rose Cross Degree with all the beautiful and imposing ceremonies peculiar to the A . and A . Rite . Those who were present will not easily forget the occasion , which was

one to impress itself upon the most careless participator . The perfect renderingof the beautiful ritual , the harmonious working of the officers , the absolutely correct and appropriate arrangement of the rooms ( the zealous work of that indefatigable Mason Bro . Cottrell , the Recorder ) formed a "tout ensemble" which evidently sunk deeply into the

hearts of the candidates . After the ceremony , his Royal Highness honoured the brethren by joining them at the banquet , which was enlivened bv the vocal talent of some of the brethren , among whom Bros . Thomsett , Cottrell , Bryant , and O'Malley , specially distinguished themselves .

Masonic And General Tidings

MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

The visit payable by the Festival Stewards of the year to the Ruyal Masonic Benevolent Institution has been arranged to take place on Friday , the 24 th inst . The Board of Stewards for the Festival of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys held a meeting at

Freemasons' Hall , on Wednesday , when the final touch was put to the arrangements for next Tuesday's meeting . Bro . T . Hastings Miller is a candidate for representing the Ward of Billingsgate in the Common Council .

The Prince of Wales has contributed £ 100 towards the fund which is being raised for the Jubilee celebration in Hyde Park on Wednesday , the 22 nd inst . The Gazette of Tuesday contains the announcement that the Queen has been pleased to confer the honours of a baronetcy of the United Kingdom , on Bro . the Right Hon . Sir R . Hanson , Lord Mayor of London .

THE LATE ELECTION FOR THE BOARD or GENERAL PURPOSES . —We have received several letters from brethren for insertion in the Freemason , thanking their supporters who recorded their votes in their favour . As all the candidates , both successful and unsuccessful , are presumable equally thankful , it seems invidious to give a space for special cases , but we may perhaps be allowed to

say that our advertising columns are open to any brother who desires to express his gratilude to his friends through the pages of the Freemason . The seventh annual dinner of the Wanderers Lodge of Instruction , No . 1604 , will take place on Wednesday next , the 15 th inst ., at 7 o ' clock p . m ., at the Restaurant , 1 . Victoria Mansions . Victoria-street , S . W .

We are pleased to be able to announce that the catering for the Children ' s Jubilee Gathering in Hyde Park on the 22 nd inst ., has been entrusted to Messrs . Spiers and Pond , who will be in sole charge of this portion of the arrangements . A better selection could not have been made . Messrs . Spiers and Pond , with their array of establishments in town and country , and , above all , with

their tried conveniences and the army of attendants whose services can be made available , will be just the firm to deal successfully with such a vast programme as that of providing bountiful supplies for 30 , 000 children , and we have no doubt that when the celebration is over , it will be found that Messrs . Spiers and Pond have carried out their contract with complete success .

The annual preparatory meeting of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Kent was held on Thursday , the 24 th ult ., at the Masonic Temple , Canterbury , under the presidency of Earl Amherst . The D . P . G . M ., Bro . J . S . Eastes , was unavoidably absent through a domestic affliction . Among those present were the Prov . Grand Sec , Bro . A . Spencer , the Prov . Grand Treas ., Bro . Thoroe , and Bros . C . P . Cox , C . Holttum , Adamson , Russell , J . Plant , P . G . O . ; W .

H . Donaldson , H . D . Naylor , and Warne , P . S . G . W . There were also in attendance brethren from the various lodges in Kent to the number of 105 . The business of the gathering having been transacted , the brethren adjourned to the Royal Fountain Hotel , where an excellent banquet was provided by Bro . H . Ward . The noble Chairman was supported by about 70 members of the Craft . The Provincial Grand Festival is fixed to take place at Dartford , on Wednesday , July 6 th .

The Grand Lodge of Maryland , which was established in 1785 , celebrated its centenary festival in the Concert Hall of the Academy of Music , Baltimore , on Tuesday , the ioth ult ., the Grand Master and Officers of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania , from which Maryland derived its Masonic organisation , and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts beinsr the most honoured of the Grand

Lodges which were represented at the important gathering . Grand Master Shryock , of Maryland , who presided , was presented in the first place with a magnificent jewel , which had been forwarded by command of the Prince of Wales , as Grand Master of England , to Bro . Shryock as the Representative of the United Grand Lodge at the Grand Lodge of Maryland . He was then honoured by his brethren

of Maryland with a fine bronze bust of himself , which Bro . the Hon . Richard Vaux , Past G . Master of Pennsylvania , acknowledged on his behalf and at his request . The proceedings were continued on Wednesday and the day following , the whole concluding with a grand banquet . Not the least important circumstance to be recorded in connection

with this meeting is that the Grand Lodge of Maryland voted a sum of 1700 dollars ( £ 340 ) towards the completion of Bro . Schullz ' s admirable ' History of Freemasonry in Maryland , " of which there are ten more parts to be issued , and which , when concluded , will be found to embrace a full and complete sketch of the Craft in that jurisdiction , down to , and inclusive of its centennial celebration .

Masonic And General Tidings

The presentation to Bro . Frederick Binckes has been postponed from the 14 th to the 25 th inst ., at the distribution of prizes and Stewards' visit to the Institution , at Wood Green . Bro . T . Hastings Miller rendered efficient

service as Organist at the Grand Lodge last week , in the absence of Bro . Sir Arthur Sullivan , Grand Organist . The Prince and Princess of Wales have consented to become patrons of the Volunteer Officers' Ball , which will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on the 20 th

inst . Prince Albert Victor of Wales has kindly consented to lay the foundation-stone of the Victoria Jubilee Wing of the Dublin Hospital for Incurables on the 29 th inst . The Speaker and between 400 and 500 Members of the House of Commons have accepted Bro . Lord

Charles Beresford ' s invitation to witness a series of torpedo experiments and a sham fight at Portsmouth , to-morrow ( Saturday ) . The Queen has been awarded by the Council of the Society of Arts the Albert Medal for distinguished merit in promoting arts , manufactures , and commerce , and the Prince of Wale ? , as President of the Society , has

announced her Majesty s acceptance ot the distinction . Upwards of eighty boys of the Yorkshire Society Schools , Westminster Bridge-road , attended at Lords on Monday , and enjoyed a day watching the match , Middlesex v . Yorkshire , at the invitation of Bro . Lord Londesborough and Lord Wenlock , who also saw to the satisfaction of their appetites .

' 1 he early history and proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts is almost ready for issue , the Index to the work being in course of preparation . There is no doubt that this history when it makes its appearance will be read with avidity , the Keystone of Philadelphia stating that every care is being taken in its compilation . A Masonic celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee

will be held at Bristol Cathedral , by permission of the Dean , on Tuesday afternoon , the 21 st inst ., at 4 p . m . The brethren will walk in procession from Freemasons' Hall , Park-street , wearing their Masonic clothing , to the cathedral , where a sermon will be preached by Bro . the Rev . J . H . Wilkinson , M . A ., the Prov . G . Chaplain . Dr . Morell Mackenzie performed a second

operation on Bro . the Crown Prince of Germany on Wednesday , when he removed a further portion of the fungus like growth on his Imperial Highness ' s vocal chord . This will be subjected to the most careful and minute inspection by Dr . Virchoiv and other German specialists . Tha Crown Prince's health is in other resprcts entirely satisfactory . The Honorable Artillery Company held their

Jubilee Church Parade on Sunday last , when they marched , preceded by their band , from the headquarters in the Cityroad to St . Botolph's , Bishopsgate , the rector of which , the Rev . W . Rogers , is Chaplain to the Regiment . The Prince of Wales as Colonel and Captain General of the Company , and Bro . the Duke of Portland , Lieut .-Col . Commanding , were present , and the parade muster , which

included light cavalry , artillery , and infantry , amounted to over 350 , irrespective of the veterans . It will be seen from our advertisement columns that a new , and what is likely to prove a very important work , is in the press . The author is Bro . H . Sadler , Grand Tyler and Sub-Librarian of Grand Lodge , and the subject relates to the origin of the section of English Masons which designated itself the "ancient" society .

Bro . Sadler will throw new light on the schism , and as he is known to be a careful student of our archives , to which he has such facilities of access , there is good reason to anticipate that his work will contain the development of a new theory on the subject , and for that reason is likely to prove a valuable addition to the works which have already appeared . The price to subscribers will be 6 s . or fis . fid . carriage free to all parts of the United Kingdom .

The freemasons have , I am glad to see , decided upon a most practical way of commemorating her Majesty's Jubilee . On Wednesday last the Grand Lodge voted jffiooo as a Jubilee offering , which sum is to be divided between the three large Masonic Charities , viz ., the Institution for Girls , the Institution for Boys , and the fund for providing pensions for distressed Freemasons or widows of

Freemasons . In addition to this there is to be a monster gathering at the Albert Hall on the 13 th inst ., to vote an address of congratulation to the Queen , and as every Freemason attending it will have to pay one guinea , it is expected that a further sum of £ 6000 or ^ 7000 will thus be

raised ; and tnis , too , is to be devoted to the same Institutions , all of which are admirably managed . Freemasons who wish to see how their charity is dispensed could not do better than pay a visit to the Institution for Girls . They will there find Charity coupled with cheerfulness , economy with comfort , and discipline with kindness . — ¦ ' Truth .

At the banquet after the recent meeting of Grand Mark Lodge a special toast was honoured to Bro . Colonel Patrick Stirling , of Kippendavie , Deputy Provincial Grand Master of West Perthshire , one of the Stewards of the Grand Lodge of Scotland , and second Grand Standard Bearer of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Scotland . In reply to the toast , which was

drunk with the greatest enthusiasm , Bro . Colonel Stirling said , as a member of the Grand Lodge of Scotland and an office-bearer in it , and also as an office-bearer in the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter , it had given him most extreme pleasure to be able to be present and see the work of Grand Mark Lodge of England . When he passed the Border he wanted to see the working of English

Masonry . Thanks to Lord Kintore he had been able to see it , and he had taken to heart its lessons as seen in the working of the Benevolent Fund and the Benevolent and Educational Institutions , and he only hoped that this would be well followed up by the Masons of Scotland . As to the

hospitality of Scottish Masonry , which had been kindly acknowledged by the proposer of the toast , he could only say that there was a geographical lesson to be learned , for however warm the hospitality was in the North , it seemed to him lo get warmer the further he went South . —Dundee Advertiser .

The D . P . G . of Maryland with a fine bronze bust of himself , which Bro .

Schullz ' s admirable ' History of Freemasonry in Maryland , " of which there are ten more parts to be issued , and which , when concluded , will be found to embrace a full and complete sketch of the Craft in that jurisdiction , down to , and inclusive of its centennial celebration .

A Masonic celebration of the Queen ' s Jubilee

will be held at Bristol Cathedral , by permission of the Dean , on Tuesday afternoon , the 21 st inst ., at 4 p . m . The brethren will walk in procession from Freemasons' Hall , Park-street , wearing their Masonic clothing , to the cathedral , where a sermon will be preached by Bro . the Rev . J . H . operation on Bro . the Crown Prince of Germany on Wednesday , when he removed a further portion of the fungus like growth on his Imperial Highness ' s vocal chord .
