Hudson , the Organist of the lodge , being an efficient accompanist . Bro . Dunkel was , during the evening , presented with a silver cigar case , and also with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel .

PORTLAND . Portland Lodge ( No . 1037 ) . —On Thursday , the iSth ult ., this lodge held its usual monthly meeting for the transaction of general business , and according to its by-laws , to install the W . M . elect for the ensuing year . After the lodge was opened the reports of the Audit and Accommodation Committees were passed , the latter being

the outcome of the steady growth of the lodge during the last few years . Bro . Hy . Cooke , S . W ., was then installed as W . M . by Bro . T . Eveleigh , Chap ., who performed the ceremony with his usual ability . The ceremony was rendered more effective by the introduction of a musical service , the brethren joining heartily in the hymns , while the anthems were exceedingly well rendered by Bros . J . W . Board , G . E . C . Collinson , G . W . Dowell , F . T .

Dowdeswell , and E . Mills , I . P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . The following officers were invested : Bros . R . C . Bennett , S . W . j A . Hodder , J . W . j E . Mills , P . P . G . S . The brethren then adjourned to the Royal Hotel , where the usual banquet was held , the room having been kindly placed at the disposal of the brethren by Bro . Eveleigh , whose artistic taste and untiring energy were displayed in the graceful arrangement of the tables , which were the source of general admiration during the evening . The labours of Bros . W . Osborne and J . Baker in this respect ,

too , deserve honourable mention . After responding to the toast of "The Charities , " Bro . Sir R . N . Howard , P . G . D . England , who was the founder and first Master of the lodge , expressed the satisfaction he felt at seeing the high position which his lodge had attained ( considering its numerical standard ) with regard to the great Charity votes , and also to seeing it outgrow so steadily its present accommodation .

During the evening several very musical brethren obliged both with glees , solos , and duets , keeping the kind brother who accompanied constantly at work . To give plenty of time for the installation ceremony and the banquet after , a First and Third Degree was postponed till the ensuing month . On the whole , this was about the most successful of June meetings which the Portland Lodge has known , and it is to be hoped this will be still further eclipsed .

SHEFFIELD . Wentworth Lodge ( No . 1239 ) . —A lodge of . emergency was held on Wednesday evening , the 24 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Surrey-street , for the purpose of presenting Past Masters' jewels to all the Past Masters of the lodge who continue as subscribing members of the Craft . The presentations were made by the W . M ., Bro . F . S . H .

Wilson , who , after appropriate remarks , pinned the jewels on the breasts of each of the Past Masters . The I . P . M ., Bro . Robertshaw , J . P ., at the request of the Past Masters , returned thanks on behalf of the whole . The jewels , which are of iS-carat gold , are chaste in design , and have each two bars of the same quality of gold , on which is enamelled the name and number of the lodge . On the back of each is engraved the name of the brother to whom it was presented and the year of office . _ A banquet was afterwards held , at which the W . M . presided .

A number of distinguished brethren , including Bros . W . II . Brittain , P . G . S . B . England ; R . Arnison , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D . ; Harold Thomas , P . M ., P . P . G . Reg . ; Isaac Ellis , W . M . 296 ; G . Franklin , W . M . 1779 ; V . G . S . Dearden , W . M . 2263 ; and many others , honoured the lodge with

their presence . Masonic toasts , sentiments , speeches , and musical selections contributed to make a most enjoyable evening . The numerous presentations of jewels—15 in all—is quite unique , if not unpredecented , in the annals of Freemasonry .

Cox , acting as H . ; F . Kedge , J . ; C . O . Burgess , Treas . ; G . Reynolds , Scribe E . ; J . Coltart , acting as Scribe N . ; W . Hancock , P . S . ; C . W . Frommholz , Stwd . ; R . F . Potter , Janitor ; J .

Rowe , G . H . Foan , G . A . Bergholz , A . Harris , J . D . Graham , J . Woodward , A . L . Bullen , W . Hoggins , and H . G . Walker . Visitors : A . Wilson , SgS ; and F . W . Buxton , 1 S 91 . The minutes of the last convocation were read and confirmed . Bro . Henry G . Walker , 1614 , was duly balloted for , approved , and exalted . Letters of regret at not being

able to be present were read from several companions , and also from three brethren who had been unanimously balloted for as exaltees . The election of Principals and Officers for the ensuing year then took place and Auditors appointed to Audit the accounts . A Past Principal ' s jewel was unanimously voted to Comp . S . Hewett , M . E . Z . The chapter was then closed , and the companions

adjourned to a capital repast , and after refreshing themselves the M . E . Z . gave the usual Royal Arch toasts in a few kind and brief words . To the toast of " The Visitors " Comp . A . Wilson , SgS , alluded to the excellent working in the chapter and wished it every success , and Comp . F . W . Buxton , 1891 , regretted he had not joined the chapter when it was started , for he

felt he was among old friends . The Treasurer , replying to his toast , said that he felt sure there was a prosperous time in store for the chapter , and the Scribe E . said he was sorry that the three exaltees had failed to be present , as they would have completed the original number of members for the first year , but he hoped they would be with them at the next meeting in October .

All had gone smooth and harmonious , and the companions of the chapter , both present and absent could congratulate themselves on the success of the chapter from its commencement in July last . The Janitor's toast brought the proceedings to a termination . Comps . W . Hoggins , J . Woodward , and F . W . Buxton , amused the companions with some capital singing .

SALTAIRE . Moravian Chapter ( No . 387 ) . —A regular convocation of this chapter was held at the Masonic Hall on the 2 nd ult ., when there were present , among others , Comps . Woody , Z . ; J . L . Atherton , P . Z ., Prov . G . H ., as H . j John Tillotson , J . j J . T . Last , as P . S . ; John Niven , as S . N . ; Denby , Treas ., acting S . E . ; and others .

The chapter was duly opened , and a resolution of regret and sympathy with the widow and family of the late Comp . John Symonds , H ., who had died since the previous convocation , was carried in silence . Comp . Atherton was then elected H . for the residue of the current year , vice Comp .

Symonds , deceased . The ballot was then taken for Bro . J . Thornton , 2321 , which being in his favour , he was duly exalted by Comp . Atherton , Prov . G . H ., who also added the mystical lecture . Three candidates having been proposed for exaltation at the next convocation , the chapter was closed .

Portland Lodge ( No . 1037 ) . —On Thursday , the iSth ult ., this lodge held its usual monthly meeting for the transaction of general business , and according to its by-laws , to install the W . M . elect for the ensuing year . After the lodge was opened the reports of the Audit and Accommodation Committees were passed , the latter being

the outcome of the steady growth of the lodge during the last few years . Bro . Hy . Cooke , S . W ., was then installed as W . M . by Bro . T . Eveleigh , Chap ., who performed the ceremony with his usual ability . The ceremony was rendered more effective by the introduction of a musical service , the brethren joining heartily in the hymns , while the anthems were exceedingly well rendered by Bros . J . W . Board , G . E . C . Collinson , G . W . Dowell , F . T .

The brethren then adjourned to the Royal Hotel , where the usual banquet was held , the room having been kindly placed at the disposal of the brethren by Bro . Eveleigh , whose artistic taste and untiring energy were displayed in the graceful arrangement of the tables , which were the source of general admiration during the evening . The labours of Bros . W . Osborne and J . Baker in this respect ,

too , deserve honourable mention . After responding to the toast of "The Charities , " Bro . Sir R . N . Howard , P . G . D . England , who was the founder and first Master of the lodge , expressed the satisfaction he felt at seeing the high position which his lodge had attained ( considering its numerical standard ) with regard to the great Charity votes , and also to seeing it outgrow so steadily its present accommodation .

During the evening several very musical brethren obliged both with glees , solos , and duets , keeping the kind brother who accompanied constantly at work . To give plenty of time for the installation ceremony and the banquet after , a First and Third Degree was postponed till the ensuing month . On the whole , this was about the most successful of June meetings which the Portland Lodge has known , and it is to be hoped this will be still further eclipsed .

SHEFFIELD . Wentworth Lodge ( No . 1239 ) . —A lodge of . emergency was held on Wednesday evening , the 24 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , Surrey-street , for the purpose of presenting Past Masters' jewels to all the Past Masters of the lodge who continue as subscribing members of the Craft . Wilson , who , after appropriate remarks , pinned the jewels on the breasts of each of the Past Masters . felt he was among old friends . All had gone smooth and harmonious , and the companions of the chapter , both present and absent could congratulate themselves on the success of the chapter from its commencement in July last .
