MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

Grand Masters' Lodge , of which Bro . H . Holmwood Crawford ( City Solicitor ) is W . M . for the year , will have a river trip in the Maria Wood on Wednesday next . We are asked to state that the meetings of the Doric Lodge of Instruction , No . 933 , held at the Moorgate Tavern on Wednesday evenings , are adjourned till September 2 nd .

The Prosperity Lodge of Instruction , No . 65 , meeting at the City Arms Restaurant , 2 , St . Mary Axe , E . C ., has adjourned for the summer vacation until the first Wednesday in September . An interesting and representative exhibition of heraldry is now in progress at Edinburgh . Conspicuous amongst the exhibits is the grant of arms that was made to the Tallow Chandlers' Company .

We regret to announce the death of Lady Florence Enid Wyndham Quin , eldest daughter of Bro . the Earl of Dunraven . The deceased lady had only recently completed her 2 istyear , having been born on the 13 th June , 1 S 70 . The Provincial Grand Lodge of Norfolk is to be held on Wednesday next at the Corn Hall , East Dereham . The brethren will afterwards proceed from the Corn Hall in their Craft clothing to Divine service at the parish church , and a banquet will follow at the King's Arms Hotel .

The annual excursion of the Gallery Lodge , No . 192 S , and their lady friends took place on Saturday last , when a party of between 50 and 60 proceeded from Waterloo to Guildford in saloon carriages placed at their disposal by the London and South-Western Railway Company . We shall give a full report next week .

The annual meeting of the Alfred Rose Croix Chapter was held at the Masonic Hall , Taunton , on the 25 th ult ., when Bro . C . W . Sampson was installed M . W . S . by the outgoing M . W . S ., Bro . T . W . Chaffin . The newly-elected M . W . S . invested his officers for the ensuing year .

Speech-day at Harrow was held on Thursday , the 2 nd inst ., when among those present were the Danish Minister , Bros , the Earl of Zetland , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., First Lord of the Admiralty , Sir George O . Trevelyan , Bart ., M . P ., Lord Mayor Savory , Sheriff Farmer , and Sheriff Augustus Harris .

The fourth edition of Mr . Thomas Greenwood ' s " Public Libraries " is now in the press . The work has been brought down to date , and a great amount of new matter has been added . This is the book to which Mr . Gladstone repeatedly referred when opening one of the London public libraries a few months ago . The new edition will be published by Cassell and Co .

Last week Bros . Sir John B . Monckton , Sir Morell Mackenzie , M . D ., J . C . Parkinson , Major Arthur Griffiths , F . Drummond , and S . B . Bancroft visited Bro . Edmund Yates at Holmwood , in Surrey , to present him , on behalf of the subscribers , with a massive richly chased silver bowl , bearingthis inscription : " Presented to Edmund Yates on completing three score years , by three score friends and well-wishers 3 rd July , 1 S 01 . "

Already nearly 3 L . 3 COO has been received towards the memorial which is being raised for the late Bro . Archbishop Magee , and which , it is hoped , will ultimately reach £ 12 , 000 . The claims on the late Archbishop ' s estate for his translation from Peterborough and dilapidations amount to close on ^ , 2000 , and the Committee are anxious to discharge these , and at the same time provide an additional income of £ 300 a year for the Archbishop ' s widow and two aged sisters .

The first of the two matches between the Gentlemen and Players during the present season was played at Kennington Oval in the latter half of last week , when the Gentlemen came off victorious in one innings by 54 runs . The scores were—Players , 165 and 59 ; Gentleman , 27 S . For the former Abel and M . Read scored 27 each , Ulyett , 22 , and Peel ( not out ) , 22 ; for the latter Mr . E . Smith made 7 6 , Mr . W . The German Emperor , accompanied by the Duke of Connaught , rode over to Eton on Monday morning and inspected the volunteer battalion , some 2 S 0 strong , of the College , there being in attendance on his Majesty Bros . Admiral Sir E . Commerell and Sir E . Baldwin Malct . The boys went through their drill and several manoeuvres with ; great credit , and at the close were congratulated in a brief speech by his Majesty , who expressed himself well pleased with their appearance and discipline .

According to the day census recently taken of the City , the total number of employers and employed in the City on the 27 th April last was 301 , 381 , or 40 , 320 more than at the census in 1 SS 1 . The number of women at work was 50 , 416 , or nearly 6000 more than at the previous census , and the number of children under 15 years 31 , 305 , or upwards of 2000 more than before . The census of street

traffic was taken on the 4 th May , when it was found that the number of persons entering the City on foot or in vehicles at So different points was 1 , 121 , 70 S , as compared with 797 > 563 in 1 SS 1 , while the number of vehicles was 92 , 488 , or nearly 21 , 000 more than in 1 SS 1 . These returns do not include passengers by train , of whom only a partial census was taken .

The Emperor and Empress of Germany arrived off the Nore on board the Imperial yacht Hohenzollern early on Saturday morning last , and some hours later reached Port Victoria , where he was received , on behalf of her Majesty the Queen , by the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , and the Duke of Edinburgh , who were attended by their respective suites as well as by the German

Ambassador and his attaches , and Bro . Sir E . B . Malet , our Ambassador at Berlin . After lunching on board the Hollenzollern , the Imperial and Royal party left by train at 2 . 25 p . m ., the journey being safely accomplished to Windsor , where they were met by the Princess of Wales and other members of the Royal Family , and were escorted from the railway station to the Castle , where her Majesty received them and greeted them most affectionately .

Smith , M . P ., on Thursday , the 16 th inst .

The Earl of Lathom Lodge of Instruction , Joiner ' s Arms , Denmark Hill , S . E ., is held on Tuesday evenings at eight o'clock instead of Thursday as heretofore . The Accident- . Insurance Company ( Limited ) give notice that interim interest on the paid capital of the company at the rate of 5 per cent , per annum for the half-year ending the 30 th of June , 1 S 91 , is now payable .

The Duchess of Teck has graciously consented to open a bazaar in the grounds of the British Home for Incurables , Clapham-rise , on Tuesday , 31 st instant , on behalf of the London and South-Western Railway Servants' Orphanage . The Duke of Cambridg'e dined with Bro . Sir Redvers and Lady Audrey Buller , there being present , among others , to meet his Royal Highness , Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn and Bro . The annual dinner of the Royal Navy Club of 1765 and 17 S 5 was held at the Hotel Metropole on Friday evening , the 3 rd inst ., the guests being Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., First Lord of the Admiralty , and Admiral H . R . H . the Duke of Edinburgh .

A meeting of the Court of Governors of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution was held on the 3 rd inst . at the Masonic Hall , where , after some routine business , about a dozen children were elected on the Educational Fund , and grants given for advancement in lifei

The Provincial Grand Lodge of London and Metropolitan Counties of the Royal Order of Scotland , of which Bro . Colonel Shadwell H . Clerke is Prov . G . M ., will meet at 33 , Golden-square , on Monday next , at 3 . 30 p . m . The banquet will take place at the Ship , Greenwich , at 6 . 30 .

The 2 ist annual meeting of the Cabdnvers' Benevolent Association was held in St . James ' s Hall on Thuisday evening , the 2 nd instant , when a number of substantial subscriptions was announced . It was stated that there are 13 , 000 licensed men in London , of whom Sooo were actually in employment . The number of annuitants on the list of the Association is 5 S .

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught dined with the Duke and Duchess of Westminster at Grosvenor House on the 3 rd inst ., among the guests invited to meet their Royal Highnesses being Bro . the Earl and Countess of Airlie , Bro . Viscount and Viscountess Powerscourt , Bro . Lord and Lady Wantage , and Bro . General Sir Redvers and Lady Audrey Buller .

In the advertisements of the Prov . Grand Lodge and Prov . Grand Chapter of Surrey which appeared last week some inaccuracies occurred , which a reference to this week ' s issue will put right , but we have , notwithstanding , to express our regret that through a misunderstanding on our part the advertisements appeared before the proof had been approved by the Prov . Grand Secretary .

A parly of bluejackets , numbering 130 , under the command of Lieut . Pearce , R . N ., with a battery of six 9-pound muzzle-loaders , arrived at Waterloo Station from the gunnery ship Cambridge , Plymouth , on Monday morning , and marched to the Royal Naval Exhibition , preceded from Birdcage Walk by the band of the Royal Marine Artillery . An enormous crowd lined the streets and gave the men a hearty welcome .

the Prince of Wales attended the second biennial sale of his shorthorn cattle and Southdown sheep at Wolfe rton , on the 3 rd instant . The proceeds amounted to £ 3184 , the highest price being £ 210 , given by Bro . Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild for Duchess Lancaster , among the other purchasers being Bros , the Earl of Faversham and Lord Fitzhardinge . His Royal Highness returned to Marlborough House the same evening .

The Dean and Chapter of St . Paul ' s Cathedral have granted permission to the Imperial Federation League to erect a monument in the cathedral to the memory of the late Bro . Sir John Macdonald , Premier of the Dominion of Canada . Subscriptions to the fund which is being raised for the purpose will be received by the honorary Treasurers , Bro . Lord Brassey and Sir Daniel Cooper , at the offices of the League , 3 6 , Charles-street , Berkeley-square .

The Emperor of Germany , accompanied by the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , and the Duke of Connaught drove to the Victoria Barracks , Windsor , early on Saturday morning and inspected the 2 nd battalion Scots Guards and the 2 nd Life Guards , which had marched from Spital . When the inspection was over , the two regiments , headed by their bands , marched to Holy Trinity Church , where the Emperor and the Princes attended Devine service in which the bands took part .

The remains of the late Bro . J . Drago , naval pensioner , were buried on Wednesday at Chatham Cemetery . The deceased , who was 73 years of age , was only ill three days , and died on Saturday last at his residence in Middle-street , Old Brampton . He was an old Freemason and well known in local Masonic circles , having carried out the duties of Tyler to lodges Nos . 184 and 1424 for over 30 years . About three years ago he received a pension from the above lodges

in recognition of his past services . Among the mourners were the only son , the brother of the deceased , a few personal friends , and Bros . Russell , W . M ., Varren , P . M ., P . P . G . P ., Tanner , P . M ., P . G . S . H ., and Baldwin , P . M ., from No . 1 S 4 ; and Bro . L . Salt , W . M ., T . Morgan , P . M ., P . P . A . G . S ., Burrell , Stwd ., and Rose , Tyler , from No . 1424 . Wreaths were sent from the different lodges , and deep sympathy was expressed throughout the town where the deceased had so long resided .

Bro . Sir Henry Knight and Lady Knight have removed from 6 , Stratford-place , and are now staying at their country seat , Elm Side , Hampton . Their future town residence will be 2 , Whitehall-court . Personalty to the amount of £ 35 , 903 has been left by the late Mr . Henry Sampson , of the Referee . Conditionally the testator bequeaths half of his residuary estate to Charitable Institutions .

We notice that the brands of champagne ordered by the Corporation of the City of London for the entertainment to the German Emperor are : Perinet et Fils , Heidsieck Bollinger , and Deutz and Geldermann . General Boulanger has written a book , which was published in Paris on Thursday . It is entitled " Reflections Thoughts , and Maxims . " In a volume of 300 pages the General discourses on politics , love , and literature , and in a somewhat lengthy preface explains the scope and object of his unlooked-for contribution to the field of letters .

That Bro . Augustus Harris ' s arrangements for the State Performance at the Italian Opera on Wednesday night were without a hitch is merely recording a foregone conclusion , but on this occasion the popular impresario appears to have surpassed himself . Festoons of roses , lilies , and other flowers were hung around each tier looped at the box divisions by posies of similar flowers , which completely concealed the pillars , while bouquets

were placed in every box . The Royal box was festooned from end to end with ropes of English roses—the whole wafting a graceful perfume throughout the house . The performance itself was as near perfection as possible , and the Emperor more than once expressed his admiration of the magnificent spectacle . During the evening their Imperial and Royal Highnesses conveyed to Bro . Augustus Harris their satisfaction at the arrangements .

At the recent annual meeting of St . John ' s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin , the Rev . Benjamin Waugh , in thanking the hospital for admitting' a number ot little ones " rescued by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children , " alluded to the difficulty of procuring the admission of convalescent patients of the hospital into the general convalescent homes , because of the contagious

and disfiguring nature of their disease . He concluded by moving that a convalescent branch of the institution be established . The proposition has been promptly adopted , and the hospital now has a convalescent branch of 10 beds in the most rural part of the Finchley-road . The home was opened on Saturday , when the beds were at once filled with cases from the hospital in Leicester-square .

Black and White of this week is enlarged by 16 pages in order that the visit of the German Emperor and the Koyat Wedding may be adequately illustrated . Mr . Frederic Vitliers and a staff ot special artists have been busily engaged in sketching the chief events connected with the Emperor's landing at Port Victoria , his journey to Windsor , and subsequent events of the week . In addition to these

illustrations the number will contain a fine engraving of an entirely new portrait of the Emperor , which has just been exhibited in Berlin , and a full-page portrait of the Empress . Mr . Linley Sambourne contributes a special cartoon illustrative of the Emperor ' s visit , and there are besides portraits of the Prince and Princess Christian , Princess Louise of Schleswig-Holstein and her husband , Prince Aribert ot Anhalt , and other illustrations .

The marriage of the Princess Louise , youngest daughter of Prince and Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and grand-daughter of her Majesty the Queen , with Prince Aribert of Anhalt was solemnised in St ! The remains of the late Bro . J . Drago , naval pensioner , were buried on Wednesday at Chatham Cemetery . The deceased , who was 73 years of age , was only ill three days , and died on Saturday last at his residence in Middle-street , Old Brampton . He was an old Freemason and well known in local Masonic circles , having carried out the duties of Tyler to lodges Nos . 184 and 1424 for over 30 years . About three years ago he received a pension from the above lodges

The performance itself was as near perfection as possible , and the Emperor more than once expressed his admiration of the magnificent spectacle . At the recent annual meeting of St . John ' s Hospital for Diseases of the Skin , the Rev . Benjamin Waugh , in thanking the hospital for admitting' a number ot little ones " rescued by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children , " alluded to the difficulty of procuring the admission of convalescent patients of the hospital into the general convalescent homes , because of the contagious

and disfiguring nature of their disease . He concluded by moving that a convalescent branch of the institution be established . The proposition has been promptly adopted , and the hospital now has a convalescent branch of 10 beds in the most rural part of the Finchley-road . The home was opened on Saturday , when the beds were at once filled with cases from the hospital in Leicester-square .
