election in May , 1901 . The widow of a recently deceased annuitant was granted one half ( £ 20 ) of her late husband's annuity , while certain petitions that had been deferred from previous meetings were approved .
Two new lodges have just been added to the already long roll of those that meet in the London districtthe Horistic , No . 2822 , which was consecrated on the 27 th ult . by the Grand Secretary ; and the Grove Park Kent Lodge , No . 2824 , which was ushered into existence on the 30 th ult . by Bro . Frank Richardson ,
P . G . D ., Acting G . D . C , in the Grand Secretary's unavoidable absence . The ceremony in both cases passed off most successfully , and we sincerely hope that these lodges will fulfil the promise of their inauguration , and that a long career of usefulness and prosperity is before them .
» The proceedings at the recent annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland show that the Province , which musters in all soroe 10 lodges , is in a sound position , both
numerically and financially . Its chief , Lord Henry Cavendish-Bentinck , M . P ., is absent in South Africa and has been so for many months , but the duties of his office have been very efficiently discharged by his respected Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Col . F . R . Sewell . The report of the Commitee of General
Purposes , which showed that the Province was , as we have said , in a most satisfactory state , was unanimously adopted , and on its recommendation a donation of 10 guineai ; was voted to the Mark Benevolent Fund . We trust that future annual meetings may be of the same encouraging nature .
» * * The Indian Freemason for July contains more than the average amount of readable matter which is always to be found in its pages . In addition to an account of the installation meeting of Lodge Himalayan
Brotherhood , No . 459 , Simla , there are full reports of the installation of Lord Northcote as Pro District Grand Master of Bombay , in succession to Lord Sandhurst , who resigned the office on vacating his post of Governor of the Presidency , and the nomination , at a
quarterly communication held at the Freemasons' Hall on the zSth April , of his lordship as Grand Master of All Scottish Freemasonry in India , also in succession to Lord Sandhurst . As our readers know full well , Lord Northcote is the respected and popular Prov . G .
Master , G . Superintendent , and Prov . G . Mark Master of Devonshire , having been appointed to the first and second of these offices in 1 S 9 6 and 1897 respectively , and to the last in 1 S 90 . He is , therefore , qualified , as well by his Masonic experience as by his natural fitness
for such positions , to rule and govern the Bombay brethren under the Knglish and Scottish Constitutions , and the success which has attended his efforts in Devonshire augurs well for the success of his career during the next few years in Bombay . * *
The meeting of the District Grand Lodge ( E . C . ) of Bombay was held on the 27 th March with Bro . the Hon . Mr . [ ustice Parsons in the chair as District Grand Master . In the course of the proceedings , and after Lord Northcote had been installed in office in due and
ancient form , his lordship was pleased to obligate and instal Bro . the Hon . Mr . John Tate as Deputy District Grand . Master in succession to Bro . I . M . Shields who had left India , and to whose manifold services to Freemasonry in the presidency a warm tribute of praise and respect was paid . The services of the late
Bro . Edward J . Smith , who formerly held for many years the post of District Grand Secretary , were also recognised , and at the suggestion of Bro . the Hon , Mr . Justice Parsons , District Grand Lodge resolved , item con ., that a letter of condolence should be addressed to the widow of their late Bro Smith .
mm * At the meeting of the Grand Lodge of All Scottish Freemasonry in India , at which , as we have said , Lord Northcote was nominated for the office of Gran d Master , Tiro . Past Grand Master Jamds W . Smith
presided as Grand Master , and delivered a lengthy address , in the course of which he reviewed the chief events that had occurred since last October , and for which , towards the close of the proceedings , he was honoured with a cordial vote of thanks . Reference was also made to the death of Bro . E . J . Smith ,
formerly District G . Secretary under the English Constitution , who was an honorary member of the Scottish Grand Lodge in India , and on the motion of Bro . K . R . Cama , a resolution of regret at his loss mid of condolence with h \ t widow was ordered to be entered on the minutes .
Masonic Notes.
The regular convocation of the Provincial Grand Chapter ( S . C . ) of India , of which there is also a full report , was held in March under the presidency ot Comp . K . R . Cama , Grand Superintendent , who had the good fortune to be in a position to report very
favourably of the events that had occurred since their September meeting . The work of the chapter had been well done ; there had been a fair accession of strength , while the balance to the credit of Provincial Grand Chapter amounted to 1268 Rupees , as compared with 1131 Rupees in September last . Grants of 300
Rupees to the New Freemason Hall Building Fund ; 100 Rupees to the Bombay Presidency Famine Relief Fund ; and 100 Rupees to the Transvaal War Relief Fund were unanimously voted by Provincial Grand Chapter , and the proceedings shortly afterwards terminated .
* * Our Indian contemporary refers , in some of its notes , to the report which appeared in our issue ol the 2 nd June last of the proceedings of the Logic Club at the closing meeting of last session , when Bro .
R . Mannel , P . M ., Preceptor , in the resumi of work , referred to the friendly interchange of visits which had taken place between the Logic Club and " the Genesis Club , a sister Institution . " In mentioning this fact
the Indian Freemason speaks of the latter body as "the Genius Club . " This , having regard to the quality of its membership , it may very possibly be , but the Evil Genius of Error must assuredl y have been abroad when our contemporary made the amusing slip .
? * * Bro . A . J . Peacock has been installed M . W . Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria , in succession to Lord Brassey , whose term of office as Governor of the Colony has expired , and who has
consequently left Melbourne , having prior to his departure taken formal and , at the same time , affec ' tionate leave of the brethren he had presided over . The ceremony was performed by M . W . Bro . G . S Coppin , Past Grand Master , and , to judge from the
account which appears in the Australasian Keystone , the scene must have been a grand one , and will be remembered by all who had the good fortune to be present . Subsequently the new Deputy G . Master , Bro . A . B . Templeman , was obligated and installed , and the rest of the Grand Officers invested . Among
the distinguished visitors on this occasion was Bro . J . G . Davies , Deputy Grand Master of Tasmania , who , with the Grand Officers accompanying him , was received with the customary honours . The proceed * , ings terminated with a banquet , at which the newlyinstalled Grand Master presided , and was heartily acclaimed by the guests .
» * » Bro . J . C . Remington , M . W . Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of New South Wales , experienced a most cordial reception on visiting officially the Newcastle district ( N 0 . 2 ) . Not only were he and the Grand
Officers who accompanied him entertained at lunch , and taken for a harbour excursion on board a government steam launch , but in the evening a numerous gathering of brethren met at the Masonic Hall , and the Grand Master , having opened it as an occasional lodge , was invited to accept an illuminated address
expressive of the pleasure which his visit had caused . The presentation having been made , Bro . Remington gavealongand interesting address inwhichhe referred to . the several lodges in the district , and highly extolled the manner in which their duties were carried out , his remarks being interrupted by frequent outbursts of applause .
Later in the same month of May , in which the foregoing visit was paid , M . W . Bro . Remington was entertained at dinner by a number of the Grand Lodge officers , in commemoration of his 50 th Jubilee
birthday . The event appears to have afforded the utmost pleasure to the Grand Master , who thus finds himself the recipient of all kinds of compliments from the different sections of the Craft over which he has been called to preside .
» « We have received " Fasciculus Tertits ( 1751-1807 ) " of Bro . Dr . Chetwode Crawley ' s " Cementaria Hibernica ; being the Public Constitutions that have served to hold together the Freemasons of Ireland . " We have not had time to do more than
glance at the contents of the Fasciculus , but the matter it contains is of the very highest importance as illustrating the history of Freemasonry in Ireland , and we shall take the earliest opportunity of noting the contents with such particularity as the merits of the work most assuredly demand .
