M ., after congratulating the brethren on the resumption of duties , announced that during the recess a Provincial Grand Lodge had been held , when Bro . R . B . Cater had been appointed Prov . G . S . W . —a wellmerited honour to himself and to the lodge—which was
received with acclamation by those present , and the compliment was gracefully acknowledged by Bro . Cater . ' 1 he W . M . also referred to the extraordinary and successlul exhibition of Masonic documents , illustrative drawings , jewels , medals , and curios which bad recently been held at Worcester , to which the lodge had been an extensive contributor , and reported that all the loans had been returned
safely . Dr . Hopkins mentioned a valuable addition to Masonic literature , namely , " The Origin of the English Rite of Freemasonry , especially in relation to the Royal Arch Degree , " recently published by Bro . VV . J . Hughan , being the seventh of his series , and , on his behalf , presented
to the lodge a set of plates contained in the work , in acknowledgment of which a cordial vote of thanks was passed . The VV . M . stated that the revised bye-laws had been sent for confirmation by the M . W . G . M . ; but other changes having been required , the subject . will be considered at the next meeting .
MANCHESTER . —Lodge of Affability ( No . 317 ) . —The usual monthly meeting was held in the Freemasons' Hall , Cooper-street , on Thursday , the 2 nd inst . Wormleighton into Freemasonry . Bro . John Garside delivered the E . A . charge to the candidate , and Bro . R . R . Lisenden the lecture on the first tracing board . There being no further business " Hearty good wishes" were expressed by the visiting brethren , and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony .
HUDDERSFIELD . —Lodge of Truth ( No . 521 ) . —The regular meeting of this nourishing lodge was held on Friday , the 3 rd inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , Fitzwilliam-street . The lodge was opened by Bro . J . B . Mathewman , VV . M ., and his officers . The minutes of last regular meeting having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken for Mr . Ben Walker , and being favourablehe
, was initiated into the mysteries by the W . M ., Bro . A . Armitage , J . VV ., presenting the working tools , and Bro . R . Williamson , P . M ., gave thc charge . There not being any more business the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the supper room , and after a hearty repast the remainder of the evening was spent socially and profitably . visitorsenlivened the evening by some excellent songs , and the initiate , Bro . Walker , will be a great acquisition to the lodge , he being a clever musician and accompanist . RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — Last Saturday afternoon the brethren assembled for business under the presidency of Bro . Burch , VV . M . Owing to unforseen circumstances , there was not so large a gathering as is generally the case , but there was no falling off in the working which had to be done . The W . M . very ably passed two brethren who showed their proficiency
for such advancement , and initiated a candidate . Bro . Duret , P . M ., then raised three brethren who proved their fitness for being admitted to the Sublime Degree , and after a long sitting the lodge was closed in solemn form . The usual refreshment after dinner was partaken of at
the Amherst Arms Hotel , and Bro . Waller fully maintained his reputation as a caterer . During the discussion of dessert , which was both varied and excellent , the customary toasts were given ; and in most perfect harmony thc last regular meeting of the Amherst Lodge in 1 S 84 was brought to a close .

DORIC LODGE ( No . 933 ) . —The opening meeting of the season was held at the Duke's Head , 79 , Whitechapel-road , on Friday , the 3 rd inst ., and was attended with a marked degree of success . To signalise the event , Bro . B . Cundick , P . M . 1421 , and the worthy Preceptor of the lodge , had consented at short notice to work the ceremony of installation , and that brother accordingly opened the

Cundick favoured the brethren with a highly intellectual treat in the manner in whicli the whole of the ceremony was worked . Afterwards , Bro . Stephens , in the chair , worked the ceremony of initiation , Bro . DaCosta actinc as candidate . Bro . Stewart next worked
the First , Second , and Third Sections of the Lecture , and a capital evening of work was well concluded . Bros . J . Charlton , S . VV . 1259 ; W . Edmond , 933 , J . W . 1259 ; and VV . E . Domminy , 1445 , were elected members . Bro . J . West was elected W . M . for the next meeting , and Bro . Stephens , in the name and on behalf of the brethren of the lodge , made a warm and suitable acknowledgment of
the value they all placed upon the untiring and able exertions of Bro . Cundick as Preceptor of the lodge , to advance the interests of the brethren and the Craft at large . To this Bro . Cundick , P . M ., made a brief and modest reply , and all business being satisfactorily concluded , lodge was closed . From the great success attending the opening night we augur another successful season for this old and capital working lodge . ¦
DUKE OF EDINBURGH LODGE ( No . 1259 ) . —This lodge of instruction met as usual in goodly numbers on Thursday , at the Bricklayers' Arms , Narrow Street , Limehouse . The chair was occupied by Bros . J . Charlton , VV . M . ; Moore , S . VV . ; Cole , J . VV . ; R . Atkins , P . M ., Preceptor ; Esmond , S . D . ; L . Ettling , J . D ., and acting Secretary ; Thomas , I . Stephens , & c The cermony of initiation was worked by Bro . Saunders . candidate . Bro . Hams was next tested for Second Degree , and on lodge being advanced Bro . Cole was questioned for Third Degree . The esteemed Preceptor next worked the greaetr portion ofthe ceremony of
Installation in an able manner , and it was announced that Bro . R . Atkins would work the installation ceremony in its entirety on Thursday the 16 th inst ., when brethren are cordially invited to attend . Bro . Esmond was elected to occupy the chair on the ensuing Thursday evening , and after some formal business the lodge was closed .
EMBLEMATIC LODGE ( No . 1321 ) . —This lodge of instruction since it has been removed to the Red Lion , York-street , St . James's-square , has been remarkably well attended , particularly during the summer months , when many of the lodges of instruction have been compelled to close or barely able to get a sufficient number of the brethren together to hold a meeting . METROPOLITAN CHAPTER OF IM . PROVEMENT ( No . 975 . )—This eminent Chapter of Improvement , which has for many years held its quarters [ at the historic old Jamaica Tavern , in the neighbourhood of Corn hill , has been compelled to seek a new home inconsequenceof the old structure being doomed to demolition , and on Tuesday night found a new resting place at the White Hart Tavern , in Cannon-street , at the corner of
Abchurchlane , the well-known hosletry of Bro . Chard . The duty of finding new quarters for the meeting of the chapter was in May last entrusted to a committee , and after a most anxious and willing inquiry they suneeeded in obtaining a most admirable room tor the purpose , at the place above stated . As this Chapter of Improvement has been the means of giving the most important instructions to all seeking advancement in this Supreme Degree , anything
concerning its welfare was naturally looked to with considerable interest . Accordingly on Tuesday last , for the first time the companions met at the place which for some time will be their place of occupation . The chapter was well attended , and amongst the companions present were : Lilley , Z . ; Gillard , H . j Perrin , J . ; Webb , S . N ., and Becdall , P . S . There were present Comps . Walls , Smart , Cotterson , Child , Bing , Turner , Stanton ,
Brooks , Haynes , Braine , Newton , Fraser , Appleby , Daniel , Davies , Mardnell and Comp . Frank . Brown occupied his usual position as Preceptor and S . E . 'The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed , Comp . Child being the candidate . Comps . Brooks and Davies were unanimously elected joining members of the chapter .
The votes of the chapter were accorded to Comp . Lilley , who is supporting the case of Henshaw , a candidate for one of the Masonic Institutes . There being no further business the chapter was closed , and the convocation was adjourned until Tuesday evening , the nth of October , at half-past six o'clock .

RIVERHEAD . —Amherst Lodge ( No . 1223 ) . — Last Saturday afternoon the brethren assembled for business under the presidency of Bro . Burch , VV . M . Owing to unforseen circumstances , there was not so large a gathering as is generally the case , but there was no falling off in the working which had to be done . The W . M . very ably passed two brethren who showed their proficiency
for such advancement , and initiated a candidate . Bro . Duret , P . M ., then raised three brethren who proved their fitness for being admitted to the Sublime Degree , and after a long sitting the lodge was closed in solemn form . The usual refreshment after dinner was partaken of at
the Amherst Arms Hotel , and Bro . Waller fully maintained his reputation as a caterer . METROPOLITAN CHAPTER OF IM . PROVEMENT ( No . 975 . )—This eminent Chapter of Improvement , which has for many years held its quarters [ at the historic old Jamaica Tavern , in the neighbourhood of Corn hill , has been compelled to seek a new home inconsequenceof the old structure being doomed to demolition , and on Tuesday night found a new resting place at the White Hart Tavern , in Cannon-street , at the corner of
Abchurchlane , the well-known hosletry of Bro . Chard . The duty of finding new quarters for the meeting of the chapter was in May last entrusted to a committee , and after a most anxious and willing inquiry they suneeeded in obtaining a most admirable room tor the purpose , at the place above stated . As this Chapter of Improvement has been the means of giving the most important instructions to all seeking advancement in this Supreme Degree , anything
concerning its welfare was naturally looked to with considerable interest . Accordingly on Tuesday last , for the first time the companions met at the place which for some time will be their place of occupation . The chapter was well attended , and amongst the companions present were : Lilley , Z . ; Gillard , H . j Perrin , J . ; Webb , S . N ., and Becdall , P . S . There were present Comps .
