On Friday , 13 th June , just two days before the Grand Festival of the Order , its newest conclave was dul y consecrated by Bro . Wesley Francis , P . G . C , at the Masonic Temple , Long Market-street , Pietermaritzburg , Natal . Chiefly through the personal influence of Bros . R . I . Finnemore , P . G . V ., and the Rev . J . Oxley Oxland , P . G . C , three thriving conclaves have been

established in this Colony , and the brethren are giving them excellent support . After the consecration , the officers were appointed as follows : Bros . Stantial , C ; Ireland , G . ; Rousell , Sec . pro tern ., ist V . D . ; R . D . Clark , 2 nd V . D . ; and Harris , D . C . The names of five candidates for induction on the

chair at the next Festival of the Institution , which would be held in 1 S 91 , and that he had already obtained the names of several West Lancashire brethren who would act as Stewards on that occasion . He was exceedingly pleased to have been able to obtain the

Chairmanship of the noble earl , as he was the Grand Master of the province to which he ( Bro . McLeod ) belonged . He moreover stated that he hoped to get very strong support from that province and from other provinces , as he was greatly in need of

assistance . After the transaction of formal business , it was announced that the Provisional Management Committee had decided not to erect the new class-rooms , the building of which had been already authorised , at present , the finances of the Institution now being so low

as not to justify any such expenditure . After a short discussion of the new laws , the meeting was adjourned till next Wednesday , October 15 th , at twelve noon , for a full consideration of those laws . A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings for the day .

After the confirmation of the minutes of the last Court , the General Committee , and the Finance Committee , the meeting proceeded to the election of children on the foundation of the Institution , and the whole of the candidates were elected , involving an extra annual expenditure of £ 1 10 . The Prince of Wales , who had arrived at Marlborough House from Abergeldie Castle the day previous , left London for the continent on Saturday morning last , travelling from Charing Cross to Dover , thence by boat to Calais , and thence by train , via Laon , Chalons , Strasburg , Stuttgart , and Salzburg , to Vienna , where he arrived on Sunday evening . His Royal Highness will be absent from England for about three weeks .

The battalions of Foot Guards now m London , with the battery of Royal Horse Artillery from St . John ' s Wood , had a field day on Wimbledon Common on Thursday , the 2 nd inst ., the ist Coldstream Guards , under Col . Follett , acting as a strong outpost of a southern army , while the

3 rd Grenadiers , 2 nd i oldstreams , and the ist Scots Guards , with the guns , acted as a reconnoitring force from an army north of the 'Thames . 'The operations of the latter were conducted by Major-General Philip Smith , commanding the Home district .

The Theatres.

THE THEATRES .

Faust up to Date , " b y Bros . Sims and Pettitt , was such a success , that it was not a wonder that Mr . George Edwardes should commission them to write another burlesque . The new one , called " Carmen up to Data , " was produced on Saturday last to the Gaiety patrons , and met with the same approval as its

predecessors . The plot we need not go into ; the audiences at this theatre are content without one . We do not think the authors have made all they mig ht out of "Carmen , " but they have pleased the jeunnesse doree , and that is sufficient . All the latest events are touched upon in the dialogue and songs . Bro .

Liitz has even in composing the music occasionally burlesqued Bizet ' s grand opera . The gem of the piece is Bro . Lonnen ' s song , " The bogie man . " It was rapturously received , and is likely to be heard on every street organ and at smoking concerts ere long . Bros . Lonnen and Williams have a good topical song , " It

will cause unpleasantness , " and Miss Florence St . John is furnished with many lovely ballads , chief of which is " Where all is love , " all of which she sings to perfection . It is well for the variety stage that Miss St . John remains on it , for she could command a large salary in grand opera . Miss Letty Lind g ives her

clever imitation of farmyard birds , and dances gracefully as of yore . Bro . Arthur Williams is very funny with his lines , and will no doubt be more humorous yet . Bro . Lonnen works his hardest to keep every , thing going , and has now developed into a dancer of no

mean repute . The pas de quatre is now an essential , and if not so fetching as the last , is quite a feature in the burlesque . The beautiful grouping of the chorus ladies and the dresses they wear almost surpass any of the stage mounting which Mr . George Edwardes has made himself so famous for since he took the Gaiety .

* : ] : : ¦ : Bro . John Flare has resumed looking through "A Pair of Spectacles , " which Mr . Grundy has provided for him , and there seems every chance of this fascinating play running for many months to come . It is a play—and there are not too many such—which one can

see again and again with renewed interest , and the acting of Bros . Hare and Grove has not faltered a whit since the first night . Neither has exaggerated his part or got lax in delivery . This applies to the neat acting of Miss Kate Rorke , Bro . Sydney Brough , and the rest of the cast .

# # # "The Struggle for Life , " not a very good title , is soon told . Paul Astier marries a duchess old enough to be his mother . He squanders her wealth , then seeks a divorce in order to marry a young , rich , and beautiful girl . He seduces a girl of humble parentage . As the

duchess will not divorce him he attempts to poison her , but has not the courage to complete his crime . She then gives him his divorce , but just as he is about to marry the object of his affection he is shot dead by the lover of the girl he has ruined . English people have little sympathy with the career of either party

when a young man marries a woman much older than himself , so that this may be said to be the weak part of " The Struggle for Life , " but the acting of Mr . George Alexander and Miss Genevieve Ward redeems any false interest in the story . We can well understand how anxious this young

manager was to get a theatre and produce Daudet's play , adapted and much altered b y Messrs . Buchanan and Horner . It is the finest piece of acting we have seen of Mr . Alexander ' s . He has the charm and ease of good manners and dignity of bearing which the character requires . Miss Ward admirably fulfils her

share of the labour , and particularly stands out in the poison scene . Miss Laura Graves at once made a distinct hit in the second act , which she had greatly to herself . We were disappointed with Mr . Chevalier , and some others , but if only to see Mr . Alexander ' s and Miss Ward ' s acting we mean to go to the Avenue again . . « .

The Countess of Kintore , wife of the Governor of South Australia , has left Adelaide for England , with her eldest son , Lord Inverurie , whom she intends placing at Eton . Her ladyship will return to Adelaide in May next .
