VVe are glad to hear that the King of the Netherlands has so far recovered from his recent attack of indisposition as to be in a tranquil state . dinner will take place at the Cafe Royal at 7 . 30 . The Rev . E . S . Shuttleworth , brother of the Rev . H . C . Shuttleworth , and late rector of Egloshayle , Cornwall , was married on Tuesday to Miss Angela Cudmore , a well-known London actress .

In consequence of the success of the season and the increasing demand for seats the Epping Forest coach will continue to run twice daily from Chingford Station ( G . E . R . ) on week-days at 11 . 10 a . m . and 3 . C p . m ., and Sundays at

The International Literary and Artistic Congress , which was opened on Saturday last , held its second sitting at the Mansion House on Monday afternoon , and in the evening the delegates were entertained at dinner by Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress , there being also present Bro .

Hicks-Beach , Bart ., M . P ., President of the Board of Trade , left Netheravon , his seat in Wiltshire , on Saturday last , for a short holiday abroad .

The Corporation of London have referred the proposal that it should guarantee £ 1000 to the Royal Naval Exhibition of 1 S 91 to a Committee for consideration and report . Bro . A . Grundy has retired from the firm of Baily and Grundy , of Paddington and Cambridge , and joined the staff of the Gulcher Electric Light Company as inspecting engineer .

A fire broke out on the ist instant in Pitt-street , one of the principal thoroughfares of S y dney , which rapidly assumed such proportions that it is estimated that property worth £ 1 , 000 , 000 sterling has been destroyed . The Empress Frederick of Germany , accompanied by her daughters , arrived at Munich from Vienna , on Monday . After a two _ days' sojourn in the Bavarian capital her Imperial Majesty will proceed to Berlin , but her daughters left the afternoon of their arrival .

The County Purposes Committee of the City of London were entertained at dinner at the Guildhall Tavern on the 3 rd inst . by their Chairman , Bro . Deputy G . Rose-Innes , among the guests present being Bros . Alderman Eyans , Major J . F . Wieland , and ex-Sheriff Harris .

The Queen of Roumania concluded her visit to this country on Tuesday evening , leaving Victoria Station at S . 30 p . m ., and travelling , via Queenborough and Flushing , en route for Bucharest . A number of Roumanian residents in London were at the station to take leave of her Majesty .

Bro . the Earl of Ravensworth , who represented South Northumberland in the House of Commons from 1 S 52 to 1 S 7 S , and is a D . L . and J . P . for the counties of Northumberland and Durham , completed his 69 th year on Wednesday , having been born on the Sth October , 1 S 21 .

The Royal Agricultural Society of England announce that prizes to the value of £ 300 will be offered in connection with their next annual meeting , which will be held at Doncaster , in June , 1 S 91 , for the best managed farms in the occupation of bona-fide tenant farmers in the countv of York . The American , Italian , and French Exhibitions , which have been successfully held at West Brompton , are to be followed next year by a German Exhibition , to include the products and manufactures of Austria , and it is hoped that the contemplated visit of the Emperor William to London will add largely to the prestige of the exhibition .

The Royal Kent Lodge of Antiquity , No . 20 , has arranged with Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., P . Z ., for the delivery of his interesting lecture on the ritual and ceremonial of the Symbolical Degrees in Freemasonry , at Chatham , on Wednesday , 5 th proximo . The lodge will be opened at G . 45 p . m ., at the Sun Hotel , and will be closed at 9 p . m . Members of neighbouring lodges are cordially invited , and an interesting and instructive evening is anticipated .

The Queen of Roumania arrived at Balmoral on a visit to Queen Victoria on the 2 nd instant , being received on alighting from the train at Ballater by the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , and the Duchess of Albany . The visit concluded on Saturday , when her Majesty left for Edinburgh , where _ she remained till Sunday night , when she continued her journey by Caledonian train to London .

An interesting match was fired on Tuesday , the 30 th ult ., at the Park Ranges , between teams selected from the Masonic lodges of the South Middlesex , Queen ' s Westminster , London Rifle Brigade , and the ist Surrey . The conditions were seven shots at 200 , 500 , and 600 yards , eight men a side , and the competition was for the Silver Challenge Gavel , presented by Major Lambert of the " Queen's , " to be competed for annually . For the third time in succession the " Oueen ' s" men won , with a lot to

spare . Mr . George Terry , a brother of Misses Ellen and Marion Terry , was recently married . Bro . Henry Irving gave him a set of handsome silver salt cellars , & c . j Mr . and Mrs . Arthur Lewis ( Miss Kate Terry ) , a case

containing six dozen knives and forks ; Bro Harry Wright , a steel etching of "Sonning , " with the superscription— " A memento of those very happy Sundays at Sonning spent together , 1 SS 6-90 . " Bro . Bram Stoker , and many theatrical and other friends , made Mr . and Mrs . G . Terry presents of various kinds .

The sale of the "Masonic Orations , " by Bro . L . P . Metham , P . D . P . G . M . of Devon , edited by Bro . John Chapman , P . M . 1402 , P . P . G . D . of Devon , has resulted in the sum of ^ , 12 being left after payment of all expenses . This amount , together with an extra gift of £ 3 15 s . ( so as to make the total 15 guineas ) , has been generously

forwarded by Bro . Chapman to the venerable "Masonic Orator of the West" as a donation to the funds of the "Royal British Female Orphan Asylum , " Stoke , Devonport . The receipt of this special contribution was a pleasant surprise to the honorary Secretary of this admirable institution , and all the more gratifying because the work has proved such a success financially and generally .

While the business of the P . G . Lodge of West Lancashire was proceeding at Preston on the ist inst ., a grand panelsized photograph of the assembled brethren was taken b y Messrs . Brown , Barnes , and Bell , of Liverpool , and the negative has proved satisfactory beyond expectation . Fully live hundred of the assembled Freemasons are clearly depicted , and the majority of them can be easily recognised . The

Provincial Grand Master , the Earl of Lathom , as well as the whole of the Provincial Grand Officers seated with his lordship upon the orchestra , have taken splendidly , and the fine proportions of the hall , with its stately pillars and noble organ , are plainly shown . Bro . the Earl and Countess of Airlie and her fsister , the Lady Esther Gore , who have been staying at Cortachy Castle , his lordship ' s seat in Forfarshire , are now residing at Milnthorpe House , his residence near Winchester . General Lord Wolseley was sworn in a member of the Privy Council of Ireland at Dublin Castle , on the 2 nd instant , and has since been engaged in reviewing the troops and inspecting the garrisons in various parts of the country .

Comp . J . H . Sillitoe , P . D . G . D . C , P . G . H . East Lancashire , installed Comps . J . Halden as Z ., A . H . Williams as H ., and G . C . Williams as J . Also invested the officers in the Virtue Chapter , 152 , Manchester , on Friday , the 26 th ult .

Bro . General Sir Frederick Roberts , the Commander-in-Chief in India , has arranged for a series of manoeuvres to take place near Attock , in the Indies , during the cold weather season of 1 S 90-1 . The forces engaged will be about 17 , 000 strong .

Rev . Dr . Lemon , Provincial Prior of Devon , V . E . S . N ., has arranged to hold the annual meeting of the Priory of Knights Templar of the province at Exeter this year . The knights will meet there on the 24 th inst ., under the banner of the Rougemont Preceptory .

Bro . Alderman Savory , Lord Mayor elect of London , has appointed his brother , the Rev . Ernest Lloyd Savory , rector of Palgrave , Suffolk , to be his chaplain , while Bro . VV . J . Soulsby has been re-appointed for the 16 th time in succession private secretary .

The governors of St . Bartholomew's Hospital have commissioned Professor Herkomer , B . A ., to paint a life-size portrait of Bro . Sir Sydney Waterlow , in testimony of the valuable services he has rendered as Treasurer of that ancient and royal foundation for 16 years .

The statement that the Prince of Wales had conferred the rank of Past Grand Master of English Freemasons on the Duke of Connaught is inaccurate . No appointment , not even that of Pro Grand Master—an office vacant by the death of the Earl of Carnarvon—has been made .

Bro . the Earl of Zetland , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , and the Countess of Zetland were present at a garden party on Monday at Kennet , near Alloa , and witnessed the presentation of an address to their host and hostess , Bro . Lord and Lady Balfour , by their Clackmannan tenantry .

Mr . Basil Woodd Smith proposes that a tower should be built on the top of Hampstead Heath , just high enough to look well over the surrounding trees and buildings . He also makes the common-sense suggestion that the top storey should be arranged as an observatory , provided with a good telescope and other instruments .

It has been definitively arranged that the Naval Exhibition shall be held at Chelsea , the additional three acres for the formation of a lake having been granted , so that the public will have the opportunity of witnessing a series of mimic naval engagements . The Royal Military Exhibition , from which a handsome surplus is already assured , will close on the 12 th November .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Sussex will he held at the Masonic Hall , Lewes , on Tuesday , the 14 th inst ., and in the absence of the Prov . G . M ., H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , K . G . ( who has not yet been installed in office ) , it will be presided over by the Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , D . D ., Dean of Battle , P . G . Chap .

VVe are glad to learn that Bro . Robert Berridge is slowly recovering from the acute al tack of gouty iritis , from which he has been suffering . We understand that he is under the care of one ot the leading oculists of the day , who leads him to hope that his sight will not be impaired j but , at the same time , tells him that it will be many weeks before he is able to resume his Masonic duties .

VVe regret to announce that the Harmony Lodge and Chapter , No . 600 , Bradford , have lost a worthy and distinguished brother and companion , John Beanland , who died on the 30 th ult . He was initiated in the year 1862 , W . M . in 1 S 69 , Superintendent of Works in Provincial Grand Lodge West Yorkshire 1 S 7 6 j also exalted as a companion in 1 S 71 , installed Z . in 18 7 6 , and invested as Principal Sojourner in 1 SS 0 . For many years he represented his lodge on the Charity Committee of the province .

On Friday morning , the 3 rd instant , a large barque was noticed on the Gunfleet Sand making signals of distress , and the Albert Edward lifeboat , Clacton-on-Sea , one of the two boats presented to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , and endowed by United Grand Lodge in commemoration of the Prince of Wales ' s return from his visit to India , at once put off and succeeded in bringing the crew of eight men in safety to Clacton Pier .

Truth contained last week a scathing attack on a Mr . Walter Austin , who has for several years been appealing through the press for contributions towards certain homes and schemes for providing free meals , & c , for poor children . We have no doubt our contemporary , whose scent is so keen to unearth abuses , is satisfied that all the charges can be substantiated , but if only half are true they are enough to relegate Mr . Austin to private life at least , if not to something more serious .

T he great City Fruit Show at the Guildhall was opened by Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs on Monday . His lordship attended in state , accompanied by Sheriffs Farmer and Bro . Augustus Harris , and attended by his officers . Among those present were Bro . Alderman Sir lames

Whitehead , Master of the Fruiterers' Company , and Lady Whitehead . The hall was densely crowded , and an attempt at a procession for the purpose of inspecting the splendid exhibits was hardly as successful as it might have been , notwithstanding the efforts of the police to clear the way .

The Corporation of London have referred the proposal that it should guarantee £ 1000 to the Royal Naval Exhibition of 1 S 91 to a Committee for consideration and report . Bro . A . Grundy has retired from the firm of Baily and Grundy , of Paddington and Cambridge , and joined the staff of the Gulcher Electric Light Company as inspecting engineer .

A fire broke out on the ist instant in Pitt-street , one of the principal thoroughfares of S y dney , which rapidly assumed such proportions that it is estimated that property worth £ 1 , 000 , 000 sterling has been destroyed . The Empress Frederick of Germany , accompanied by her daughters , arrived at Munich from Vienna , on Monday . After a two _ days' sojourn in the Bavarian capital her Imperial Majesty will proceed to Berlin , but her daughters left the afternoon of their arrival .

The Royal Agricultural Society of England announce that prizes to the value of £ 300 will be offered in connection with their next annual meeting , which will be held at Doncaster , in June , 1 S 91 , for the best managed farms in the occupation of bona-fide tenant farmers in the countv of York . The American , Italian , and French Exhibitions , which have been successfully held at West Brompton , are to be followed next year by a German Exhibition , to include the products and manufactures of Austria , and it is hoped that the contemplated visit of the Emperor William to London will add largely to the prestige of the exhibition .

The Queen of Roumania arrived at Balmoral on a visit to Queen Victoria on the 2 nd instant , being received on alighting from the train at Ballater by the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , and the Duchess of Albany . The visit concluded on Saturday , when her Majesty left for Edinburgh , where _ she remained till Sunday night , when she continued her journey by Caledonian train to London .

An interesting match was fired on Tuesday , the 30 th ult ., at the Park Ranges , between teams selected from the Masonic lodges of the South Middlesex , Queen ' s Westminster , London Rifle Brigade , and the ist Surrey . The conditions were seven shots at 200 , 500 , and 600 yards , eight men a side , and the competition was for the Silver Challenge Gavel , presented by Major Lambert of the " Queen's , " to be competed for annually . The sale of the "Masonic Orations , " by Bro . L . P . Metham , P . D . P . G . M . of Devon , edited by Bro . John Chapman , P . M . 1402 , P . P . G . D . of Devon , has resulted in the sum of ^ , 12 being left after payment of all expenses . This amount , together with an extra gift of £ 3 15 s . ( so as to make the total 15 guineas ) , has been generously

forwarded by Bro . Chapman to the venerable "Masonic Orator of the West" as a donation to the funds of the "Royal British Female Orphan Asylum , " Stoke , Devonport . The statement that the Prince of Wales had conferred the rank of Past Grand Master of English Freemasons on the Duke of Connaught is inaccurate . No appointment , not even that of Pro Grand Master—an office vacant by the death of the Earl of Carnarvon—has been made .

Bro . the Earl of Zetland , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , and the Countess of Zetland were present at a garden party on Monday at Kennet , near Alloa , and witnessed the presentation of an address to their host and hostess , Bro . Lord and Lady Balfour , by their Clackmannan tenantry .

Mr . Basil Woodd Smith proposes that a tower should be built on the top of Hampstead Heath , just high enough to look well over the surrounding trees and buildings . He also makes the common-sense suggestion that the top storey should be arranged as an observatory , provided with a good telescope and other instruments .

It has been definitively arranged that the Naval Exhibition shall be held at Chelsea , the additional three acres for the formation of a lake having been granted , so that the public will have the opportunity of witnessing a series of mimic naval engagements . The Royal Military Exhibition , from which a handsome surplus is already assured , will close on the 12 th November .

The annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Mark Lodge of Sussex will he held at the Masonic Hall , Lewes , on Tuesday , the 14 th inst ., and in the absence of the Prov . G . M ., H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , K . G . ( who has not yet been installed in office ) , it will be presided over by the Deputy Prov . G . M ., Bro . the Very Rev . E . R . Currie , D . VVe are glad to learn that Bro . Robert Berridge is slowly recovering from the acute al tack of gouty iritis , from which he has been suffering . We understand that he is under the care of one ot the leading oculists of the day , who leads him to hope that his sight will not be impaired j but , at the same time , tells him that it will be many weeks before he is able to resume his Masonic duties .

VVe regret to announce that the Harmony Lodge and Chapter , No . 600 , Bradford , have lost a worthy and distinguished brother and companion , John Beanland , who died on the 30 th ult . He was initiated in the year 1862 , W . M . in 1 S 69 , Superintendent of Works in Provincial Grand Lodge West Yorkshire 1 S 7 6 j also exalted as a companion in 1 S 71 , installed Z . in 18 7 6 , and invested as Principal Sojourner in 1 SS 0 . For many years he represented his lodge on the Charity Committee of the province .

On Friday morning , the 3 rd instant , a large barque was noticed on the Gunfleet Sand making signals of distress , and the Albert Edward lifeboat , Clacton-on-Sea , one of the two boats presented to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , and endowed by United Grand Lodge in commemoration of the Prince of Wales ' s return from his visit to India , at once put off and succeeded in bringing the crew of eight men in safety to Clacton Pier .

Truth contained last week a scathing attack on a Mr . Walter Austin , who has for several years been appealing through the press for contributions towards certain homes and schemes for providing free meals , & c , for poor children . We have no doubt our contemporary , whose scent is so keen to unearth abuses , is satisfied that all the charges can be substantiated , but if only half are true they are enough to relegate Mr . Austin to private life at least , if not to something more serious .

Whitehead , Master of the Fruiterers' Company , and Lady Whitehead . The hall was densely crowded , and an attempt at a procession for the purpose of inspecting the splendid exhibits was hardly as successful as it might have been , notwithstanding the efforts of the police to clear the way .
