The banquet over , the customary loyal and Masonic toasts were given by the W . M in thc following order : "The Oueen and the Craft ; " "H . R . H . the Prince o Wales , M . W . G . M . ; " " Bros , the Right Hon . Sir M . W . Ridlev , Bart ., M . P . R . W . P . G . M . ; Alderman R . H . Holmes , J . P ., P . G . D . Eng ., D . P . G . M . ; and Officers of the Prov . G . Lodge of Northumberland ; " and " Uros . Sir Hedworth Williamson , Bart ., R . W . P . G . M . ; Canon Tristram , D . P . G . M . ; and Officers of the Prov . G . Lodge of Durham ; " all of which were duly honoured . Bro . J . T . Stark , I . P . M ., in submitting the toast of the evening— " The W . M . "—
said that nothing gave him greater pleasure than to hand over the gavel to a brother whom he had always the warmest sympathy for , one whom the members would find far more able to deliver the Degrees of the Art far in advance of himself , and he felt sure that he would continue to uphold the lodge in its efficient state , and direct the brethren in as capable a manner as he had done whilst acting as S . W . The toast was drunk most heartily . Bro . R . J . Holloway , VV . M ., who on rising to respond was well received , said
since coming to England he had found in Bro . Stark , I . P . M ., a Mason who had assisted him in every manner , and whom he was confident he could never repay for what he had done for him . He was the instrumental party in getting him into the chair of King Solomon . His remarks about him being able to d 3 the work of the lodge better than he ( Bro . Stark ) were not correct , as he thought that Bro . Stark was far abler than himself and further advanced in the Masonic art than ever he would be . He could not express his feelings to B ; ro . Stark in words for the kindness he had shown to him and
the way he had assisted him . He , Bro . Stark had worked night and day for the lodge , and it was entirely owing to his efforts that the lodge after onl y one year ' s working had a balance in hand of £ 128 odd . He wat indeed pleaded to think that he would , in the ensuing 12 months , have his valuable services as l . P . M . He ( the W . M . ) asked him to accept the silver cigar case and matchbox as a token of recognition of his valuable services during the past 12 months by himself and members of the lodge . Bro . J . T . Stark , I . P . M ., in reply , said that he could not express his thoughts to
the W . M . and brethren for such a beautiful gift , but he thought that he had not done much to deserve such a handsome present . He thought he would be under an obligation to the brethren by accepting their kind appreciation of his services during the past year ; but he could assure them that he would in no way relax his efforts to assist the lodge in the future as in the past . He had worked hard for the lodge , as Bro . Holloway , W . M ., had stated , but it would make him , if at all possible , do so harder still .
In presenting the toast of " The Visitors , " the W . M . said there was indeed a large number who had come to see the installation , and amongst them many distinguished Masons ; he and his brethren of the Lodge of Swinburne gave them a hearty welcome . Bro . W . Mitford , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . Durham , inreply , said he indeed was pleased to have received such a hearty welcome , and was delighted at being present to witness the installation of a very dear friend and brother that evening , and to see the ceremony
so creditably performed . He was a Mason of many years' standing , but he must say he had never seen an installation of a Master so well done as he had that evening , and it spoke well Indeed for the members of that lodge to have such men as the Installing Master , Bro . J . T . Stark , and the W . M . to rule and direct the lodge . Several other visitors replied to the toast in a most felicitous manner . The Tyler's toast brought one of the largest banquets at the installation of a W . M . n the North of England to a hearty close .
