MANCHESTER . —Avon Lodge ( No . 1633 ) . — The regular monthly meeting of this lodge was held at the Denmark Hotel , Grcenheys , on Wednesday , the 24 th ult . The meeting was held at a very early hour , viz ., three o ' clock , for thc purpose of initiating into Freemasonry Mr . Joseph Bracewcll , whose professional duties obliged him to leave before the regular hour of opening the lodge .

With commendable punctuality the lodge was opened , and after the minutes of thc previous meeting had been read and confirmed , Air . Joseph Bracewcll was balloted for and unanimously elected a member of the lodge . He was afterwards initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry , by Bro . Wm . Bostock . P . AL , in such a

faultless manner as to call forth the eulogiums from the brethren present . The charge vvas delivered by the candidate's brother , Bro . H . Bracewcll . At the conclusion of the ceremony " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by thc visiting brethren , and the lodge was " called off . " At 4 . 20 the brethren adjourned to an adjoining room , and when a social glass had been filled by each brother ,

Bro . VVm . Bostock proposed , in glowing terms , The Health of the Initiate , Bro Joseph Bracewcll . " The toast was drank with enthusiasm , and Bro . Bracewcll replied in suitable terms . 'The brethren resumed labour , and Bro . II . Jones having satisfactorily answered the questions leading from the First to the Second Degree , received the test of merit , and

retired . When the lodge had been raised to the Second Degree , Bro . Jones was duly passed to the Degree of a F . C . by Bro . S . D . AIcKellen , S . D ., and VV . M . of 149 G . Bro . Macfarlane , J . W ., delivered the charge to the candidate , and also to Bro . Allitt . 'The brethren at this stage adjourned to tea , and at 7 . 40 resumed labour . Bro . Allitt having been interrogated as to his proficiency in the Second Degree , received the test of merit and retired . When the

lodge had been raised to the Third Degree , Bro . Bostock , P . M ., assumed the chair , and raised Bro . Allitt to the Sublime Degree of M . M . Bro . Whittaker , S . VV ., delivered the charge to the candidate , and when the lodge had been lowered to the First Degree , it was closed in peace and harmony at S . 45 . At the social board , and between the toasts , Bros . Forrest , Curtis , Whittaker , and H . Bracewcll enlivened the proceedings by some excellent singing .

FRIZINGTON . —Arlccdon Lodge ( No . 16 S 0 ) . — The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 1 st inst ., vvhen Bro . G . Dalrymple , P . G . S ., VV . F . T . Allatt . Both being in attendance , the ceremonies were performed by the VV . AI . in each Degree , afterwards called the attention of the members in very feeling terms to an intimation from Bro . Gibson , Provincial Grand Secretary , to the somewhat sudden demise of their

muchrevered Bro . the late Col . Whitwell , ALP ., and D . P . G . AI . for this province , No . 1 GG 0 , Arlccdon , having been the last Craft lodge that received from his hands the elements of c insccration . The members , by a unanimous vote , expressed an earnest wish to have recorded in thc minutes their sincere regret at the loss of one so near and dear to this province and to Alasonry in general . There being nothing further but " Hearty good wishes , " the lodge was closed inform .

LIVERPOOL . —Kirkdale Lodge ( No . 1756 . )—Amongst the younger lodges in the Province of West Lancashire , none deservedly holds a higher place than the Kirkdale Lodge , which held its annual festival meeting at the Skelmersdale Hall , Kirkdale , on the 24 th u ' t-, where there was a very large and highly influential gathering of members and visitors . Although the Kirkdale

has onl y been in existence two years , it has secured much reputation as a well worked , harmonious , and charitably disposed lodge , and the eclat whicii attended our annual festival gathering on this occasion was an ample evidence of the substantial success attending the efforts of those who have had to deal with and manage its affairs . There was an attendance of upwards of one hundred members and

visitors , and amongst the latter ( as was shown in the vu'l ' i *'' ' Lodge , ) there were no fewer than twenty-six W . AI . ' s and P . AI . ' s ) . The chair at the opening vvas occupied by Bro . Alacindoe , were the subject of universal admiration and appreciation . The usual loyal and Alasonic toasts were given and responded to , and , in the course of the proceedings , Bro . Gick was presented with a valuable

Past Alaster s jewel , in recognition of his eminent Alasonic services , and as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the lodge . Bros . Newell , Houlding , and Callow responded for "The P . G . Officers , Present and Past . " The enjoyable vocal music of the evening ' s programme was given by Bros . Webster Williams , J . Muir , J . Ouecn , J .

Busfield , II . Ashmore , I . Hatton , VV . Quayle , and others , and the pianoforte accompaniments were played b y Bro . J . Skeaf , P . G . O . The sum of £ 3 3 s . was voted to the widow and family of a late brother , £ 2 2 s . to another widow , and after three gentlemen had been jiroposed for initiation , the lodge vvas closed .

INSTRUCTION . METROPOLITAN LODGE ( No . 1507 ) . —A meeting of the above lodge vvas held on Monday , the 29 th ult ., at the Aloorgate , Finsbury Pavement , E . C . Present : Bros . J . C . The ceremonies of initiation and raising were rehearsed in a most able manner by the W . AL The brethren jiroceeded to elect the officers for the ensuing twelve months , and the result was unanimous in favour of Bro . VV . AL Stiles

LP . AL 1732 , S . W . 1507 , Sec 1744 , as Preceptor , who pledged himself , as far as his abilities would allow , to perpetuate the working of his predecessor , the late and much lamented Bro . T . A . Adams , P . AL , P . G . P . 81 c , who had brought this lodge of instruction to such a high standing in thc Craft , and the brethren to a state of proficiency in their lodge duties . Bro . Jas . Willing , P . AL 177 , P . AI . and Treas . 1507 and 1744 & c , was re-elected 'Treas . ; (

unfortunatel y absent through severe illness of his wife , ) and Bro . Edwin Storr , I . G . 1 G 7 , who has so efficiently carried out the duties of Secretary for several months past , vvas unanimously elected Secretary , and pledged his best interest and services on behalf of the lodge . Bro . T . C Edmonds , S . VV ., was unanimously elected VV . AI . for the meeting of Alonday 13 th December . All Alasonic business being ended the lodge was closed in due form , and in perfect harmony .

DUKE OF CONNAUGHT LODGE ( No . 1524 ) . —The members of the West Smithfield Lodge of Instruction , No . 1 G 23 , worked the Fifteen Sections at the above lodge , on the 24 th ult ., in the presence of some fifty brethren . twenty new members . Bro . Pennefather returned thanks for "The Newly-elected . " Bro . Fieldwick proposed , and it was carried unanimously , that a vote of thanks and hon . membership be conferred on Bro . Lardner for the very able manner he had worked the Sections , remarking that he had never seen them worked better . Bro . Lardner , in returning thanks , expressed the pleasure he felt at the

honour conferred on him , and for the kind reception given to the members of Lodge No . 1 G 23 . On his becoming acquainted with the Book of Constitutions the paragraph alluding , to the visiting of each other ' s lodges he thought would be best carried out by the system the West Smithfield Lodge had adopted , that was inviting the members of a lodge to work the Sections and afterwards returning the compliment . If they were not the first to originate the

custom , he would say they were one of the first to carry it out ; and he would add , as had been said by others , that it was an excellent system to become acquainted with the working of each other . He did not wish to arrogate to himself or to others that his ideas were the best , he only spoke as it appeared to him , for hc was only a young Alason , and felt that he had a great deal to

learnthere-, fore he trusted the older brethren would pardon his presuming , and begged , in conclusion , the Duke of Connaught Lodge of Instruction to return the visit . A vote of thanks was also carried , to be recorded on the minutes , to Bro . G . H . Stephens , who had so ably discharged the duties of Prompter . Bro . Stephens , in reply , thanked the VV . M . and brethren for thc compliment recorded , the more so

because of its being associated with that of Bro . Lardner in working the Sections in that lodge . Bro . Lardner knew the pleasure he had in meeting him upon these occasions . They first saw light together in the Craft ; they had struggled together for knowledge , and were patiently awaiting the summit oi their desire . They had frequently worked the Sections together , sometimes one and

sometimes the other in the chair . He was also gratified to see so many members of his lodge present , for it was very pleasing to meet old faces . He- hoped the meetings might long continue , and the brethren spared to enjoy them . He concluded by again thanking the W . AL and brethren for their mark of esteem . The Preceptor then proposed a

vote of thanks to the other members vvho had assisted in the working of the Sections , expressing the great enjoyment they all had felt at the entertainment afforded them . Bro . Pennefather having made a suitable reply , and Alasonic business being ended , the lodge was closed , and the brethren separated after a most enjoyable evening .

WEST SMITHFIELD LODGE ( No . 1623 ) . — A meeting of this lodge was held at thc New Alarket Hotel , West Smithfield , on the Gth inst ., when the following brethren were present : Bros . Van Raalte , W . AL ; King , S . W . ; Patrick , J . W . ; Pennefather , Preceptor ; and other brethren . The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Goodenough being the candidate . The First , Second / and

Third Sections of the Lecture were worked . The following brethren werc elected to fill thc various offices for the ensuing year : Bros . Lardner , Treas . ; Pennefather . Preceptor ; and Goodenough , Secretary . The annual banquet of this lodge will be held at the above hotel on Monday next , the 13 th inst . All brethren are cordially invited . HATFIELD . —Cranbourne Lodge ( No . icSo ) . —

A meeting of the above lodge was held on Thursday , the 25 th ult ., at the Red Lion Hotel , when the following brethren were present : Bros . J . S . Webb , W . AL ; J . R . Dare , S . VV . ; J . H . Wane , J . W . ; VV . Webb , Sec . and acting Preceptor ; H . Page , S . D . ; and VV . J . Thody , I . G . The lodge was opened in due form with solemn prayer , and the minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed . The

ceremony of initiation was then rehearsed , Bro . Webb acting as candidate . Proposed by Bro . Webb and seconded by Bro . Wane , that Bro . Dare be elected W . AL for the ensuing week . Carried unanimously . Proposed by Bro . Webb and seconded by Bro . Dare , that a cordial vote of thanks be recorded on thc minutes Jto Bro . Terry , P . Prov . J . G . W . Herts , for his great kindness in attending at the

last meeting , and for the vcry able manner in which he reheased the ceremonies of consecration and installation . Carried unanimously . It was proposed by Bro . W . Webb and seconded _ by Bro . Page that a committee of three members consisting of Bros . VV . Webb , J . S . Webb , and W . AL Baker be appointed to frame bye-laws for this lodge of instruction to be presented at the next meeting . Carried unanimously . The lodge vvas then closed in due form .

HAMMERSMITH LODGE ( No . 211 ) . —This lodge met on Saturday , the 20 th ult ., at the Windsor Castle Hotel , Broadway , when there were present Bros . T . C . Walls , P . G . S . Aliddlesex and Surrey , VV . M . ; Alfred Tisley , S . W . ; Haynes , G . S ., I . W . ; J . VV . Baldwin , P . G . S . Aliddlesex and Surrey , Sec ; Goodhall , M . O . ; Lawson , Gilbert , Page , and others . The minutes of the previous meeting having been read

and confirmed , the election of W . AL for the year ensuing resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . A . Tisley , vvho dul y returned thanks . Bro . J . W . Baldwin was also unanimously elected Treasurer , and Bro . Potter re-appointed Tyler . The bye-laws having been read , a Past Master ' s jewel was voted to thc outgoing Alaster . Previously to

the lodge being closed , several names were handed in for advancement at the next meeting . The brethren then adjourned to a collation . Upon the removal of the cloth , the onlv toasts proposed were "The Ouecn and Alark Alasonry , " "The W . AL , " and "The W ^ AI . Elect , " all of which were duly honoured .

S . ; F . Curlier , ist Gen . ; A . Williams , G . AL ; T . J . Walls , Raphael ; VV . Paas , P . AI . W . S ., Treas . ; F . W . Driver , C . of G . ; C . II . Driver , P . M . W . S . ; T . W . Coffin , P . AI . W . S ; W . Roebuck , P . AI . W . S . ; Hyde Pullen , 33 °

( hon . mem . ); G . Gravely , VV . B . Kidder , J . E . Anderson , C . VV . Tayleur , 13 . F . Cramer , E . Gardiner , and others . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read and confirmed , the ballot was taken on behalf of two brethren for perfection , and it proved to be unanimous , but from unavoidable causes both were prevented from attending . Previously to the lodge being closed , notices of motion were given by Comp . Curlier to increase the

subscription to three guineas , and to present the P . AI . W . S . with jewels . The name of Bro . G . Pigache , No . 12 , was submitted as a candidate for the next meeting of the chapter . The companions subsequently adjourned to the Cafe Royale , where a most elegant banquet was partaken of . Upon the removal of the cloth , the customary Rose Croix toasts were done full justice to , and some excellent selections of music given .

With commendable punctuality the lodge was opened , and after the minutes of thc previous meeting had been read and confirmed , Air . Joseph Bracewcll was balloted for and unanimously elected a member of the lodge . He was afterwards initiated into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry , by Bro . Wm . Bostock . P . AL , in such a

faultless manner as to call forth the eulogiums from the brethren present . The charge vvas delivered by the candidate's brother , Bro . H . Bracewcll . At the conclusion of the ceremony " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by thc visiting brethren , and the lodge was " called off . " At 4 . 20 the brethren adjourned to an adjoining room , and when a social glass had been filled by each brother ,

Bro . VVm . Bostock proposed , in glowing terms , The Health of the Initiate , Bro Joseph Bracewcll . " The toast was drank with enthusiasm , and Bro . Bracewcll replied in suitable terms . 'The brethren resumed labour , and Bro . II . Jones having satisfactorily answered the questions leading from the First to the Second Degree , received the test of merit , and

retired . When the lodge had been raised to the Second Degree , Bro . Jones was duly passed to the Degree of a F . C . by Bro . S . D . AIcKellen , S . D ., and VV . M . of 149 G . Bro . Macfarlane , J . W ., delivered the charge to the candidate , and also to Bro . Allitt . 'The brethren at this stage adjourned to tea , and at 7 . 40 resumed labour . Bro . Allitt having been interrogated as to his proficiency in the Second Degree , received the test of merit and retired . When the

lodge had been raised to the Third Degree , Bro . Bostock , P . M ., assumed the chair , and raised Bro . Allitt to the Sublime Degree of M . M . Bro . Whittaker , S . VV ., delivered the charge to the candidate , and when the lodge had been lowered to the First Degree , it was closed in peace and harmony at S . 45 . LIVERPOOL . —Kirkdale Lodge ( No . 1756 . )—Amongst the younger lodges in the Province of West Lancashire , none deservedly holds a higher place than the Kirkdale Lodge , which held its annual festival meeting at the Skelmersdale Hall , Kirkdale , on the 24 th u ' t-, where there was a very large and highly influential gathering of members and visitors . Although the Kirkdale

has onl y been in existence two years , it has secured much reputation as a well worked , harmonious , and charitably disposed lodge , and the eclat whicii attended our annual festival gathering on this occasion was an ample evidence of the substantial success attending the efforts of those who have had to deal with and manage its affairs . There was an attendance of upwards of one hundred members and

Lardner for the very able manner he had worked the Sections , remarking that he had never seen them worked better . Bro . Lardner , in returning thanks , expressed the pleasure he felt at the

honour conferred on him , and for the kind reception given to the members of Lodge No . 1 G 23 . On his becoming acquainted with the Book of Constitutions the paragraph alluding , to the visiting of each other ' s lodges he thought would be best carried out by the system the West Smithfield Lodge had adopted , that was inviting the members of a lodge to work the Sections and afterwards returning the compliment . If they were not the first to originate the

custom , he would say they were one of the first to carry it out ; and he would add , as had been said by others , that it was an excellent system to become acquainted with the working of each other . He did not wish to arrogate to himself or to others that his ideas were the best , he only spoke as it appeared to him , for hc was only a young Alason , and felt that he had a great deal to

learnthere-, fore he trusted the older brethren would pardon his presuming , and begged , in conclusion , the Duke of Connaught Lodge of Instruction to return the visit . A vote of thanks was also carried , to be recorded on the minutes , to Bro . G . H . Stephens , who had so ably discharged the duties of Prompter . Bro . Stephens , in reply , thanked the VV . M . and brethren for thc compliment recorded , the more so

because of its being associated with that of Bro . Lardner in working the Sections in that lodge . Bro . Lardner knew the pleasure he had in meeting him upon these occasions . They first saw light together in the Craft ; they had struggled together for knowledge , and were patiently awaiting the summit oi their desire . They had frequently worked the Sections together , sometimes one and

sometimes the other in the chair . He was also gratified to see so many members of his lodge present , for it was very pleasing to meet old faces . He- hoped the meetings might long continue , and the brethren spared to enjoy them . He concluded by again thanking the W . AL and brethren for their mark of esteem . The Preceptor then proposed a

vote of thanks to the other members vvho had assisted in the working of the Sections , expressing the great enjoyment they all had felt at the entertainment afforded them . Bro . Pennefather having made a suitable reply , and Alasonic business being ended , the lodge was closed , and the brethren separated after a most enjoyable evening .

WEST SMITHFIELD LODGE ( No . 1623 ) . — A meeting of this lodge was held at thc New Alarket Hotel , West Smithfield , on the Gth inst ., when the following brethren were present : Bros .
