George Barnden , as a slight token of the appreciation by the brethren of his invaluable services to the lodge during his three years' tenure of the office of Secretary . The jewels were manufactured by Bro . George Kenning .
At the conclusion of the proceedings , the brethren adjourned to the banqueting hall , where a dinner was served in a manner reflecting great credit upon the Steward of the Freemasons' Club . The customary Masonic toasts were duly honoured , and one , "The Mayor and Corporation of Portsmouth , " interpolated by Bro . J . G . Niven , was received with considerable enthusiasm . In proposing the toast Bro . Niven
said the present Mayor of Portsmouth , Bro . Alderman King , was unquestionably the leading public man of Portsmouth , and in every way deserved the honour conferred upon him by his fellow citizens . He had not accepted the office for the third time because no one else could be found willing to do so , but he had been selected , as a reward for his past services to the borough , to discharge the important duties of Mayor during the Jubilee year of her Majesty's
reign . Should he receive the reward which everyone expected he would receive at the hands of the Queen , the honour would not simply be conferred upon him , but would be reflected through him upon the town generally . The Mayor , in responding , said he was not new to the office of Mayor , having already served two years , and he trusted that whatever services he had been able to render had been acceptable to the inhabitants generally . Should
any honours follow the celebration of her Majesty ' s Jubilee , they would fall upon him not as an individual but as the representative of the important borough of Portsmouth , whose interests he invariably strove to advance . The proceedings , which were interspersed with vocal and instrumental music , were of the most enjoyable character throughout . —¦—TEDDINGTON . —Sir Charles Bright Lodge
