Annual Festival Of The Evening Star Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1719.

in the neighbourhood , he was invited to put in an appearance . They were very small then , and could not find a Preceptor ; but ultimately he was asked to take the post . Their lodge was not one that could boast of working Sections ; but they got through the plain ceremonies of initiation , pissing , and raising . They had made steady progress and many brethren on leaving the chair said what they knew they had learned from him . That was a very kind compliment ; but they must know there were more keen and hard-working Masons than himself . He

might mention Bro . Beste , who had filled many a gap . It was to that good brother they must give the credit for the success of the lodge of instruction . Bro . BESTE , in response , said he should like the opportunity of stating a few facts about the lodge of instruction . It was founded about five years ago , when the Evening Star Lodge was kind enough to take them under their wing . They had now on their books about 120 members , and the average attendance that season had been 19 . Brethren acquainted with lodges of instruction would know that was a highly satisfactory average . He had been in many lodges of

instruction where it was with difficulty the different positions were filled . The fact of their success was due to having such a worthy Preceptor as Bro . Speller , who was the personification of everything that was courteous . During his year of office he had five initiates , and four of those were members of the lodge of instruction and attended regularly . Bro . Speller had been kind enough to make a few remarks with regard to himself ( Bro . Beste ) , and he could only state that as long as the brethren continued to support Bro . Speller and himself , they would put all their energy into the lodge of instruction .

The toast of The Visitors followed . The brethren who responded were Bros . WALTER MARTIN , Grand Pursuivant ; the Rev . W . H . W . C ASELEV , P . P . G . Chap . Herts ; KING , P . M . 1719 ; and DANCVGER , 205 . There were also present Bros . T . C . Edmunds , P . M ., P . / 4 . ; Land , Major West , and many others . The toast of "Vice-Chairman , " was ably proposed by Bro . SI'E LLER .

Bro . J COOTE , in responding , referred to his position of W . M . of two lodges in one year , and said he could not have got to that honourable position if it had not been for the Evening Star Lodge of Instruction in which he had got his Masonic tuition .

" The Musical Brethren , " " The Lay Members , " and " The Stewards " toasts were duly honoured , as was also a cordial vote of thanks to the Bros . Laing for the decoration of the hall . A charming musical enter ' ainment was arranged by Bro . C . Spencer West , who was heartily encored for a flute solo . The brethren assisting were Bros . Wills , Page , Arthur Sarjeant , Will Edwards , and Frank Heywood , while Bro . J . H . Maunder was an able accompanist . " Auld Lang Syne , " brought an exceedingly pleasant evening to a close .

who he observed was a kind friend to all , an accomplished lawyer , a thorough Mason , and respected by all in and out of Masonry , and he moved a proposition expressing the members deep sense of the great loss the Iodee had sustained in his death and condoling with the relatives . Bro . G . E . Wainwright , P . M ., also paid a tribute of respect to their departed member , and the resolution was unanimously carried . A gentleman was proposed for initiation at the next meeting , and after other business the lodge was closed .

The banquet that followed gave every satisfaction , and was admirably served under the personal superintendence of the manager , Bro . Frank Blackley . At the conclusion of the repast the W . M . gave in brief , but happy , terms the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , which were cordially received . Bro . Dr . Mickley , P . A . G . D . C , in replying to the toast of " The Grand Officers , Present and Past , " stated that he was proud to have the privilege to acknowledge the toast , which was always kindly ijiven and received in every lodge . The great efforts of

Bro . Lord Lathom were well known , and the other Grand Officers were carefully selected . Bro . J . VV . II . Thompson , P . M ., taking the gavel proposed "The Health of Bro . Frank E . Rosher , W . M . " He said that in the absence of the I . P . M ., Bro . F . T . Baggallay . he had the pleasure of submitting the most important toast of the evening . They all knew what an excellent fellow the W . M . was , a splendid worker of the ritual , and , without fear of contradiction , he was second to none who had fjone before him .

The W . M ., Bro . Frank E . Rosher , on rising to respond , had an ovat ' nn . He thanked the members for their great reception . It was a matter of considerable regret that the I . P . M ., Bro . Baggallay , was not present , but he felt he must be detained through some important business . He ( the _ W . M . ) had done his best and if he had given satisfaction to the brethren for his work that night he was gratified , but he felt somewhat handicapped because he had not time to attend lodges of instruction .

'Ihe W . M . gave "The Visitors , " and said that it was a toast that was always received in the Lodge of Honour and Generosity with great enthusiasm . They had a good few present , and he gave them all a hearty welcome . Many more were expected , but they had received letters , regrettintj their inability to attend , from Bros . Sir John Monckton , J . M . McLeod ( Sec . R . M . I . B . ) , H . C . Richards , M . P ., Lawrence Kellie , Samml Webb , T . Wholly , H . L . Holloway , 1 . H . Ford , Gerald Loder , M . P ., Harry Pritchard , Henry Gough , Alfred Love , and J oseph Whitehead . The W . M . coupled with the toast the names of Bros . VV . M . Wilkinson , Col . J . Harris , H . T . Coburn , A . Bowie , A . Smith , and F . I . Terry Horsey , P . M ., whom he asked to respond .

Bro . W . M . Wilkinson acknowledged the toast , observing that it would be difficult to respond if he was the only one , but there were others who would have to follow him . He had the honour of visiting the lodge 33 years ago , when he was received then just as well as he was received that da * ' , and they had given him a welcome which made him eager to come again if given the opportunity . He congratulated the members on the great working of the lodge , and said that Masonry was continuing to do in the lodge that which was done there many years ago .

Bro . Col . J . Harris also responded . He stated that he had been a Mason for very many years , but that was the first English lodge he had ever visited . He had been in a country for 30 years where there were many antagonists to Masonry , and had been turned out of his lodge at the point of the bayonet . He was now 80 years of age , and had always met with every kindness in the Craft . He gloried in Misonry , and considered it was the duty of all Masons to support the Craft in every way , and when they arrived at an old age they could then say that they had done their duty .

Bros . H . J . Coburn , A . Bowie , Alex . Smith , and F . J . Terry horsey also responded in some good speeches , bearing testimony to the excellent working , and the way the visitors had been received and entertained . In submitting the toast of "The Past Masters , " the VV . M . stated that out of a large number they had only three present , but they were good representatives of that

important body . He felt he must refer to the death of Bro . Lem MI , who was present when he ( the W . M . ) was initiated . His loss was irreparable to the lodge . His churning elcquence would be ever missed , and above everything , he was a Mason in the truest sense of the word . He joined with the toast the name of Bro . J . W . H . Thompson , P . M ., who had kindly acted that evening as I . P . M .

In response , Bro . J . W . H . Thompson , P . M ., said the Past Masters all felt the great responsibility that rested upon them , but they would uphold the high tenent of thu Craft . At the request of the VV . M ., Bro . H . Times , P . M ., proposed "The Initiate . " He said that Bro . H . VV . Clarkson had had the VV . M . and the J . W . for his sponsors , and he had been initiated in an admirable manner . They wereall glad to receive the initiate , and he assured him that he was heartily welcome .

Bro . H . VV . Clarkson , who was received with much enthusiasm , responded . He said it was the first time he had occupied his then position and he hat been looking for a text for his speech , but he could not find one , as he did not know what were the canons of their law . He was very much impressed with their cordiality and the beautiful ceremony of his initiation , which he need hardly say he had never seen before . It was certainly a great surprise to him , but it was a grand experience and might he

have the benefit of all he had seen and heard that evening and might be a credit to the lodge of which he had the great honour of being a member . The remarks of Bro . Claikson were given with much feeling and received with great applause . In giving " The Officers , " the W . M . remarked that he had a splendid staff , and in referring to the S . W ., he said that when Bro . A . P . Grabb went into the chair he would surprise them all with his excellent working of the ritual .

Bro . Grabb , S . W ., responded in eloquent terms , and the Tyler ' s toast ended a mast happy and successful evening . An excellent musical entertainment was provided under the able direction of Bro . Reginald Groome , in which the following well-known artistes took part : Miss Ethel Bevans , whose charming singing gained her two well-deserved encores ; Mr . Arthur Barlow gave his songs in excellent style ; Dro . Reginald Groome , also doubly encored , gave , by special request , that ever-popular song "Stars may forget "—his own composition—and his efforts , and those of the other artistes , were much appreciated . Bro , H . Wharton Wells , L . R . A . M ., presided at the pianoforte with his well-known ability .

who he observed was a kind friend to all , an accomplished lawyer , a thorough Mason , and respected by all in and out of Masonry , and he moved a proposition expressing the members deep sense of the great loss the Iodee had sustained in his death and condoling with the relatives . Bro . G .
