Royal Masonic Institution For Giri.S.
you have heard enough from me , and I only wish my powers were greater to do more than I have done to induce you to subscribe liberally to this ancient , most noble , most honoured , and useful Institution . ( Great applause ) . Bro . Samuel Tomkins in acknowledging the toast said : The great point the brethren had to keep before them was
to increase among each other the feeling of sympathy in the work of charity . The Girls' School was one in which they all felt a particular interest , and they thought it their first duty to support the Girls' School . It was their great pleasure to strive to keep it in full and efficient working order . That could only be maintained by the most strenuous efforts of the Craft generally , and it was very
gratifying to see so many brethren from the country then present . The Institution was as much for the country as for Londbn , and it was the duty of the brethren throughout the country to strive to support it . With respect to the financial matters which the chairman had said he ( Bro . Tomkins ) would give them , he thought it was quite unnecessary , because the whole of the accounts were in the
hands of the brethren . Bro . Thomas W . White , P . M . 21 , and P . G . S ., a member of the House Committee , then read the following Stewards ' lists Lodge 1 Bro . Gooding , R ., M . D ., G . St . 37 16 o „ 1 „ Ellis , Alderman ... 10 10 o ,, 1 „ Hartridge , Fras . J . ... 12 12 o

Bro . F . A . Philbriek , P . G . D ., proposed " Success to the other Masonic Institutions . " He said after the telling eloquence of the figures to which you listened with so much attention , I need scarcely detain you while proposing " Thc other Masonic Charities . " Assembled as we are upon a special occasion , for the benefit of the Institution whose interests we have at heart—the oldest Institution connected
with the Craft—we cannot be , as Masons , insensible ti the claims of thc two other great charities which we sup ' port in the face of the world , and which , if nothing else existed , are an open proof that our principles are carried into practice , and that Masonry is a living spirit and not merely a dead letter . No Institution in the country , be it founded on thc principles that we profess , or on any other ,
can , I venture to say , point to any great establishments supported mainly , if not entirely , by the liberality of its members raising a revenue of over £ 20 , 000 a year by their voluntary , their personal , their free subscriptions , atul doing in themselves an amount of good which I trust «' may live to see maintained , and which I equally trust ffi " not die with us , but be perpetuated by those who have y d to come . We are told that these are times of commercial
depression and depression of the interests of the coun ' tj ' If it be so , never , then , have the Institutions which W possessed , greater claims on the Craft at large , nor eve " will they be of greater utility . But I think I may say tb ^ whether the country or the various interests of the countrj ' be prosperous or not , we all , as Masons , have at heart t »' well-being- of the Institutions , and we all feel the duty °
supporting them as testified by the results we have heaia this evening . I trust , therefore that while we have n * et together to commemorate and to wish success to the on * Institution , we shall extend our kind feelings and our go 0 '' wishes , naj' more , when occasion requires , our supP and our sympathy to the other charities of the Ord ' 1-( Cheers ) . ,
. Bro . F . Binckes , in reply , said : It is to me at all tiri "* J a source of intense gratification , and I feel it a very » l S compliment , to have my name associated under any cumstances whatever with the toast of Masonic chaw * If there is one cause that I have nearer and dealer heart than another , it is that practical p hase of F # ' short
masonry , which is summed up in those two comprehensive words , or three words , practical Maso charity . Well , now , to-night you have celebrated in ^ present year of grace the second of our anniversary \ vals , events to which those who are associated with " ^ Institution , all look forward with a large a " * "" , -, ( anxiety , and especially , ' as allusion has been made P )

Bro . F .
