FREEMASONS' CALENDAR AND DIRECTORY FOR THE PROVINCE OF ESSEX , 18 S 8 .

This handsome little work is now in its fourth year of publication , and the present issue is , beyond question , the best of the series . It is authorised by the Prov . Grand Master , the Right Hon . the Lord Brooke , and in the preface the editor tells us that " several brethren have

given their names as guarantors , in case of any loss upon the publication . " There ought not to be any deficit , surelv , in a province of 26 lodges and 1177 members . Copies of this most useful Directory are sold at one shilling each , and may be had from the painstaking editor ( Bro . Thomas J . Railing , Winnock Lodge , Colchester ) , whose interest in the province , especially as Piov . G . Sec , is

widely known and warmly appreciated . The " Masonic Notes , " in reference to the Book of Constitutions , are invaluable , and as they draw special attention to the revised Rules , they should be carefully consulted by the Masters and Secretaries of lodges , who , by becoming familiar with their duties , would save their Prov . G . Sec . a deal of trouble . We speak irom experience , well-knowing of

what advantage it is to a province to have Masters and Secretaries conversant with the requirements of the Book of Constitutions . The fees payable to the Prov . G . Lodge of Essex are duly noted , but one of these appears to us in excess of ihe Law . The note reads " every joining brother , being already registered on the Books of P . G . L ., Halfa-croivn . " Rule 104 of the G . L . provides a charge

of One shilling ior every other member who has joined any lodge sim e the last payment . " What do > ou say to this point Bro . Hiov . G . Sec ? The lodges range in dates of constitution from 1 735 to 18 S 6 , and the 6 R . A . c h apters from 1 S 22 to 18 S 7 . According to Bro . Hcghan ' s " Origin of the English Rite , " the Patiiotic Chapter , Colchester , vvas formed in 1 S 09 , as ^ o . 141 . on the roll of the then

Grand Chapter . It strikes us that the present warrant of 1822 held by that chapter should be looked at in the light of one of confirmation , on formation of the " Ur ited Grand Chapter , " No . 51 ( now ) , really daiing from 1 S 07 . The Mark Degree seems to be increasing in popularity in Essex , there being 4 lodges now , with 114 members , ihe county being united vvith Suffolk , Norfolk , and Cambridge ,

under the title of Ea-t Anglia , the Prov . G . Master being the M W Bro . Lord Henniker , the D . Prov . G . M . being the Rev . C . J . Martjn . The D . Prov . G . M . of the Craft Province , is Piov . S . G . W . of the Mark Province for this year ( V . W . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , Grand Registrar ) . _ Neither the Mark nor the Royal Arch are patror . hed as in some provinces , for of the latter there are

not more than 144 members , in a province numbering considerably over 1000 Craftsmen . The subscribers' list for the Masonic Charities is well compiled , and ably arranged , the latter being on an improved plan to previous issues . The liguies come out vtry creditably , there being 1021 Boys ' , 700 Girls ' , 702 Men ' s , and 6 44 Widows ' , making a total

of 3 C 6 7 votes , exclusive of those officially held by the lodges and chapters . 1 hese being added raise the grand total to 3149 . This comprehensive list is the joint production of the Prov . Grand Sec . and Bro . R . H . Ives , P . M . 51 , & c ., and exhibits an increase of nearly 1000 votes , as compared vvith that of 1 SS 7 , which is an enormous and most gratifying advance in so short a period .

CALENDAR FOR THE PROVINCE OF WEST YORKSHIRE , 18 S 8 . We have been favoured by a friend with a copy of this publication , and confess to a feeling- of disappointment on noticing its meagre character . West Yorkshire , with its 6 9 lodges and 3290 members , 38 Royal Arch Chapters and 1173 members , 9 Mark lodges and 313 members , 8 Knights Templar Preceptories and 162 membersand 3 Rose

, Croix t hapters , should surely be able to maintain a Directory of the class so largely patronised by much smaller provinces . The Calendar for this large iv asonic province is decidedly well compiled ; for all the days of meeting for the whole of 1888 are given in tabular form , with the several places where the meetings are held , not only of the lodges , but of all the otherorganisa'ions . The

labour was not trifling to work all these dates out . At the best , however , it is but a slip for the pocket , and as it is does not even give all the officers of the Prov . G . Lodge , it is manifestly much inferior to the numerous Directories issued , several of vvhich we have latel y reviewed . The largest three provinces are practically in the same condition , for the one published for Yorkshire has long been edited and presented

to the brethren , at the expense of Bro . T . B . Whytehead , cf York . Kent , Ihe fourth in size , has one oi the most comprehensive and valuable Masonic Manuals circulated in England , so also has Devon , Hants , & c , and even such small provinces comparatively as Wilts , Oxford , and Cambridge are well represented through the services of their respective editors , Bros . Naylor , Bovvden , and Spalding . What is wanted for p ? ch province is a Directory which gives the of the

names W . M ., Wardens , and P . M . 's of each lodge , with their provirdal lank ( if any ) , so that the authorities may be able to see at a glance what members have fair rlaims for advancement and distinction as Provincial Officers . The local and general Charities should alsr . beculv altendtd to that such useful publications may be the means ol circulating much interesting information respecting the character and progress of the Craft not attainable elsewhere .

" The latter represents the arms of the fourth Duke of Athole , who was then Grand Master ( i . e ., March 22 nd , date of the charter ) , and the two seals are precisely as those on the warrant of No . 246 , Cheltenham , of A . D . 1813 , of which the history is now being written by Bro . George Norman , P . M ., P . Prov . G .

Reg ., and for which I have promised to write the Introduction . If Bro . Royle would like to communicate with me direct , he can send me a line to Torquay , Devonshire , as I may be able to send him information relative to his lodge . W . J . HUGHAN .

Bro . Robinson , P . M ., proposed "The W . M ., " congratulating the lodge on having such a good man and Mason as its Master . The W . M . responded in a brief but pithy speech , and apologising for having to be short on account of the lateness of the hour , proceeded straightway to propose "The Visitors . "

It is

needless to say they were duly elected , having been proposed by the W . M ., and seconded by the l . P . M . The customary addresses were then effectivel y retv dered by the Installing Master , Bro . Houghton , l . P . M Messrs . W . B . Pentelovv and W . H . Wicks were theii

initiated into the Order by the W . M . in an able manner Letters of regret were read from Bros . Sir Whittaker Ellis Sir F . Burdett , T . Fenn , F . Richardson , R . Grey , and f , Terry . Propositions having been received , and other bus' ! ness transacted , the lodge was closed . An adjournment vvas then made to the banquet room where an excellent repast vvas served by the host , Bro ' . Mouflet . After the removal of the cloth the usual toast list vvas honoured with the customary heartiness .

Bro . F . Binckes , P . G . b . B ., in response to the toast of "The Grand OHicers , " Slid that those who had theopportunity of being present at the Grand Festival on the preceding Wedr . esJay muat have hailed with intense gratification the re-appuintment of the Earl ot Carnarvcn as Pro G . M ., and the Earl of Lathom as Dep . G . M ., and he had no doubt that that gratification had univeisally spread over

the Order . He vvas sure that the experience they had hail of the distinguished and valuable services of those tivo noblemen , who had done so much to assist the M . W . G . M . in the ruling and governing of the Order , must have endeared them to the veneiation , respect , and love of the Craft . It should be realised that two noblemen more capable of ruling and preserving the great interests of the ( JrJer could not be found , and they had earned the best

testimony that could be given them for the zeal they had displayed . With reference to the Grand Officers , to whose ranks a large addition had so recently been made , he thought ihat as he had been so late an intruder that evening he would simply content himself vvith acknowledging the compliment paid him , and leave the rest of the response in the hands of Bro . Garrod , P . G . P . It must at all times be an honour to be numbered with the Grand

Olficeis , but he would impress upon them that the responsibrliiics oi the members of that body were not one whit more or one whit less than any member of the Craft down to the youngest initiate , for on each vvas laid a charge that he would do the best he could to maintain the interests and

prestige of their great Institution . Bro . H . Garrod , P . G . P ., also responded , and returned sincere thanks for the . honour paid the Grand Officers . With reference to the work in the lodge that evening he could only say that during his 34 years' Masonic experience he had never seen it earned out in a better manner . He would especially single out the installation ceremony , the

rendering of vvhich he had never heard excelled . It vvas also a treat to see the admirable manner in vvhich the W . M . initiated the two candidates immediately after his installation into the chair . "The Health of the Worshipful Master" vvas proposed by Bro . Houghton , l . P . M ., who expressed the pleasure it afforded him to submit the toast to the brethren . Ihe

members had been intimately connected vvith Bro . Dare , the newly-installed W . M ., since the formation of their lodge four years ago , and during that time , he had g iven them good proofs ot the zeal he had for Freemasonry at large , and the Richmond Lodge in particular . _ That night he had given them a good sample of the way in vvhich he works the ritual , and vvas a grood earnest of the way in

vvhich he would conduct the duties of the chair during the forthcoming year . _ Without further words he would sitnP 7 ask all present to join heartily in drinking to the health ot the Worshipful Master . Bro . E . Dare , W . M ., thanked the l . P . M . for the many kind expressions he had used in proposing the toast , and the brethren for the splendid reception accorded it . "J conferred

initiated into the Order by the W . M . in an able manner Letters of regret were read from Bros .

"J conferred

also had to thank them for the honour they had upon him b y electing and installing him as their W .
