Lodge , and conveying the thanks of his Royal Highness ; also a letter announcing the death of Bro . G . C Connor , late Grand Master of Tennessee . On behalf of the lodge the W . M . rose to congratulate Bro . J . Balfour Cockburn , on the signal honour so lately conferred upon him by the M . VV . G . M . in appointing him Prov . Grand Master of Guernsey and Alderney . He trusted that he might long

be spared to rule over a prosperous province . The Secretary exhibited a curious jug and snuff-box , also a quaint print presented to the lodge by Bro . G . V .. Turner . Th ; jug is richly adorned with Masonic emblems , one side being a copy of one of the celebrated and scarce Lambert de Lintot prints . The snuff-box , which is of carved ebony , has the upper side embellished by Masonic emblems ,

handp tinted , and preserved under a glass cover . It also bears tie initials , T . S ., of the owner and the date 1749 . The print is a rude wood block , very badly printed , of a head in profile comprised of Masonic tools and emblems , and below , the words "Stunanroc G . M ., " doubtless an anagram for "Cranstoun , G . M . " Thewater-mark is 1 S 02 . The thanks of the lodge were voted to Bro . Turner for his interesting

gifts . The Secretary read a paper by Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D ., on "The Master Lodge at Exeter . " Although many Master ' s lodges are known to have existed , comparatively few of them have preserved any minutes . In this case , however , though the minutes are not as full as we could wish , yet they reveal many particulars of a highly

interesting nature , and the selection made by our Bro . Hughan were naturally all to the point . There was undoubtedly much diversity in the proceedings of these lodges , but we have ' at least now one fair picture of the organisation of one such lodge . The paper "being rather a statement of facts than argumentative , left little room for discussion , and the brethren seem to have recognised this , and

consequently seized upon Bro . Hughan s well-known opinions as tothe origin of the M . M . Degree , opinions which are shared by Bros . Murray Lyon and Lane , but contested by Bros . Gould and Speth , to furnish subject for an interesting and lively debate . Bros . Conder , Speth , and Rylands elaborated this point , all three pleading for the high antiquity of the ceremony or something very similar ,

though not so complex . Bro . Le ijtrange then contributed some extracts from the Master Mason ' s Lodge attached to the old Maid ' s Head Lodge , No . 27 , established 1743-4 , but long since extinct . Bro . Sissons led the discussion into a new channel by referring to the small silver trowels worn by the members of St . Matthew ' s Lodge , which died out in 1 S 14 , asking for parallel cases . Bro . Speth pointed to

Picart ' s plate as showing that early in the last century trowels were at least in the Masons' hands , even if not attached to their coats as ornaments , and to the statuette of Frederick the Great , and the customs of many German lodges and of the Pilgrim Ledge in London . Bro . Turner also remarked thai * an old silver trowel which had belonged

to an extinct Dorset lodge was now worn cx-officio by the oldest P . M . of the successor of this lodge . After further remarks by Bro . Maclntyre North and others , a vote of thanks was cordially accorded the author of the paper , the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant for dinner .
