WOOLWICH . Florence Nightingale Lodge ( No . 706 ) . — The above lodge held its installation meeting , as is its usual and long established custom , on St . John's Day , the 24 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , William-street . The lodge vvas opened by Bro . F . G . Nichols , P . M ., in the temporary absence of the W . M ., Bro . S . H . Weston , and the minutes

of the previous meeting having been confirmed , Bro . Steward , of Lodge 73 S ( Natal ) , was , by special request , raised to the Sublime Degree . Bro . H . Christie , S . W ., and W . M . elect , wasthen presented ; and the W . M . having by this time arrived , he proceeded with the ceremony of installation , and with the full ritual Bro . Christie was placed in the chair as W . M . for the ensuing 12 months . He

appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . C H . Wharton , S . W . ; W . Saltaw , J . W . ; S . Clarke , P . M ., Treas . j E . Denton , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., Secj Rev . R . excellence of which he was heartily congratulated . He vvas also presented with a vote of thanks , the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge , and a Past Master ' s jewel , for both and several of which he returned thanks . " Hearty good wishes " were then tendered , and the lodge was closed . The banquet was served in the hall , and among the other

brethren present were Bros . W . D . Livesay , P . M ., W . Ayling , and F . Thomas , of the lodge , * Dr . Moore-Keys , A . M . D ., P . M ., P . D . S . G . W . Malta and Mediterranean ; W . Webber , W . M ., S . E . Southgate , S . W . and W . M . elect , and J . McCollough , J . W ., of 700 ; W . Busbridge , J . W ., W . Sanders , S . D ., j . J . Collins , E . Morris , and B . Hammond , of 913 ; D . Godfrey , 1 S 20 ; and C . Jolly , P . M . 1472 . The usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts having been duly

honoured , The W . M . said there vvas a toast not upon the list that he desired to give , because of the distinguished brother present vvith whom it was connected , and who they were proud to have as the Chaplain of their lodge . It vvas the toast of "The Grand Officers of the Province of Kent , " and he coupled vvith the toast the name of Bro . Jamblin , and asked them to drink it vvith enthusiasm , as it deserved .

Bro . Jamblin said there vvas an old saying down in Yorkshire " Any peg to hang a hat on , " and therefore he supposed the toast was kindly introduced by the W . M . to give him ( Bro . Jamblin ) an opportunity to make a speech . The W . M . had suggested that he should sing , because he vvas in a sort of cage , but he ( Bro . Jamblin ) was a naturalist , and had observed that nightingales never sung in cages , and as

he would not sing and must speak , he would at once proceed to thank them heartily for the toast and the manner of it . With respect to the Province of Kent , they were close neighbours , and naturally interested in the progress of it . He was speaking in the presence of an older member of Provincial Grand Lodge than himself—Bro . Denton—and who could tell them more about Provincial Grand Lodge

than he could . AH that he could say vvas that he fully reciprocated all that had been said vvith respect to their Prov . G . M . and D . P . G . M ., and the Officers of the Prov . Grand Lodge , and thanked them sincerely for their great kindness to him ever since he had come amongst them . He was sorry he could not come more frequently , and could assure them that he was always glad to come when he could , and

sorry to go . He would now stand aside , and let Bro . Denton speak for himself . Bro . Denton having briefly responded , The I . P . M . proposed the toast of "The W . M . " He said it afforded him peculiar pleasure to propose the toast , because he opened the door of the lodge to their W . M . when he was initiated into Masonry , and it vvas also a great

pleasure for him to have had the honour of installing him that day into the chair of that worthy lodge , and as he ( Bro . Weston ) vvas convinced from what he had seen of Bro . Christie that he would make an excellent Master , he asked them to drink the toast with honours . The W . M ., in response , said it seemed to him such a very short time ago since he was first placed upon the

immediate right of the then W . M . on his initiation , that he could hardly realise his present proud position . He felt proud of it because it was evidence to him that they had appreciated his efforts to attain it , and he could assure them that he should try and do his duty , and hoped that he might have a pleasant and the lodge a prosperous year before it . Bro . Webber , in responding to the very gratifying toast

of "The Visitors , " said it had afforded him the greatest amount of pleasure to visit the lodge , and also at all times to receive visitors at his own lodge . They had had , at the Nelson Lodge , during his year of office , now nearly expired , as many as 26 and 30 visitors at a time , and he trusted the W . M . of the Florence Nightingale Lodge and his Wardens would honour him by a visit to the Nelson

Lodge on the third Wednesday in July . Bro . Busbridge said it was the first time he had had the honour of visiting the Florence Nightingale Lodge , and hoped it would not be the last . He spoke highly of the working , both the raising and the installation , and thanked

them cordially , on behalf of the brethren of the Pattison Lodge present , for their hearty reception of the visitors . Bro . Steward said he was initiated into Masonry , some 1000 miles away from England . He found himself in a different position when he landed here , as he had not taken his Third Degree , but finding a friend willing to raise him he

had written to his mother lodge and got the necessary dispensation , and now , he vvas thankful to say , through the kindness of the W . M . and brethren of the Florence Nightingale , he had taken his big Degree . If any of them should ever come to Port Natal he could promise them , on behalf of his mother lodge , a hearty reception . Bro . Weston , in responding for "The Past Masters , "

excused himself from making a speech , as he vvas only , at present , a fledgling among the Past Masters . Bro . Nichols assured the brethren that the Past Masters would ever do their utmost to support the W . M . and maintain the dignity of the lodge . Bro . Denton said he had always felt it a great honour to be associated with the Florence Nightingale Lodge . It was

in 1 S 6 9 that he became a Past Master of it , and had belonged to it ever since , and served as Secretary under 20 W . Masters , and hoped to be spared yet for many years to be associated vvith them as a Past Master of ' the lodge . Bro . Moore-Keys was honoured with a special toast , for which he briefly responded , and Bro . Jolly returned thanks for an enthusiastic reception of " The Masonic and Local Press . "

" The Officers " were toasted , and then the Tyler's toast concluded the proceedings . The rare musical treat provided by Bro . Nichols , who presided at the piano , was much appreciated . He sang several ditties as he can sing ; Bro . Horton fiddled as few can fiddle . Bro . Hammond vvas awfully funny with his excellent humour . Bros . Jolly and Saltaw recited . Bros . Sanders and Ayling did the sentimental , and so vvith toast and song the hours passed merrily away .

M . and brethren of the Florence Nightingale , he had taken his big Degree .

Bros .
