Comp . E . Hopwood , P . Z ., P . P . G . S . B ., who was unavoidably absent . Apologies for non-attendance were received , and the chapter was closed . After a well served banquet , the usual toasts were honoured . Comp . W . H . Lee , Prov . G . S . E ., replied for "The Prov . Grand Officers , " and expressed his regret at the

absence of Comp . Col . Sir F . Burdett , Bart ., the Grand Supt ., who would have been gratified at witnessing the very satisfactory manner in which the proceedings had been carried out . The installation ceremonies were ably rendered , each Principal installing his successor , whilst the ceremony of exaltation was admirably performed by the M . E . Z . and those who assisted him . It was

gratifying to him to congratulate the chapter on the great success it had attained during the last few years . It was not many years since he first visited this chapter at its old habitation , and on that occasion there were but few members and it was in anything but a flourishing condition . However , about that time , Comp . Briggs came to the rescue and brought his zeal and energy to bear , and with

the assistance of those who came after him , brought the chapter to the position it occupied at the present time . He must , as the mouthpiece of the Grand Superintendent , congratulate the chapter on its success , and the Principals on the high position they occupied , and wish the chapter every prosperity . Comp . J . D . E . Tarr , Prov . ist A . G . S ., also replied . "The Health of the Principals" was next given by

Comp . H . Hooper , I . P . Z ., who said he wished the toast had been placed in more able hands , but he spoke what he felt when he said that the members knew that whatever Comp . Langley , the M . E . Z ., put his hand to he did it in an exceedingly good manner . He had had the pleasure of working with the M . E . Z . in daily life , into

which he threw the same energy . Comp . Langley s work was , therefore , always a success , as it had been that evening . They all knew the other two Principals—Comps . Potter , H ., and Reynolds , J . —would uphold the dignity of the chapter , and the working would not suffer at their hands .

Comp . G . R . Langley , M . E . Z ., said he had very much pleasure in responding , and had been asked by his colleagues in office to make his response , if possible , do for theirs . He would endeavour to do so , but , knowing them both to be born orators , they had set him too difficult a task . They had to thank the companions very much for the cordial reception the toast had received . They had on that

occasion he believed done their level best , and would promise on future occasions to try and beat it . In proposing "The Exaltee , " the M . E . Z . said he had known Comp . Latham for some time , and the longer he knew him the better he liked him . Comp . Latham had shown enthusiasm in the Craft , and that proved he should be a Royal Arch Mason . He hoped their exaltee had felt

that the ceremony was somewhat the cope-stone of the three Masonic Degrees , and trusted he would be spared for many years to meet the companions of the chapter . Comp . S . H . Latham briefly acknowledged the toast , observing that the ceremony was one of the grandest things he had ever seen in his life , and one it would be impossible to eliminate from his memory .

Comp . W . Mait , P . P . G . J . Kent , returned thanks on behalf of " The Visitors . " Although he was a stranger to all the companions except two , they would understand his pleasure at being present when he told them that Comp . Hooper , I . P . Z ., was initiated by him , and that the M . E . Z . was a very old friend of his . He was no doubt one of the oldest Masons present , being the father of a lodge , P . P . G . J .

of Kent , and a P . P . S . G . W . of Kent . He was deeply struck with the manner the ceremonies were performed , and he did not say it in flattery , for it came from his heart . The working was very good indeed , and as far as he could see differed little from that taught by Comp . Robinson , who was accepted as the principal authority in matters connected with the Order . He was also struck with the work of the

M . E . Z ., who must have had the ceremony at his fingers ' end . He was pleased to see Comp . Hooper occupying his present position , for he was his child and pupil in Freemasonry . The visitors thanked the chapter very heartily for their entertainment , for they had spent a most happy evening . Comp . T . W . Ockenden , P . P . G . D . C , responded for

"The Past Principals , " and said that when in Scotland he received a communication to attend that meeting , and was astonished to find himself a recipient of a P . Z . 's jewel , because some two years ago when that jewel was voted the companions permitted the value to appear on his list for the Charities . The kind manner in which the M . E . Z . had made the presentation , and the companions had consented

to it was another link in the great chain with which he was attached to this chapter . He thanked them for the jewel and also for the kind manner the toast had been received . He congratulated the chapter on the progress it was making , and while they had officers such as the present he was sure that progress would continue , and the chapter would become one of the very first among them .

Comp . H . Hooper , Prov . G . S . B ., I . P . Z ., said that whatever he had done in Masonry had been done with the greatest pleasure , and when he knew that he had gained the approbation of the brethren or companions he felt more than repaid . It had been a source of pleasure to him to see Comp . Mait present , for 22 years ago when that companion was Master of the Cinque Ports Lodge he initiated

him . With regard to the M . E . Z ., with whom he had worked in daily life , he had the honour of introducing him into Freemasonry , and if he did not do anything else for Freemasonry , he had done his full share by bringing in such a man as Comp . Langley . Their M . E . Z . had not only obtained thc full ritual , but at all times was ready to impart that information to anyone who was desirous to learn . He

thanked the companions for the jewel presented to him , and could only repeat that if he had given satisfaction in the past , his most earnest endeavour would be in the future to merit a continuance of that approval . Comps . A . Blenkarn , S . N ., and Amey , ist A . S ., replied for "The Officers , " after which the proceedings terminated .

Comp . Thrussell , 1614 , rendered valuable service during the evening in the musical arrangements by efficiently presiding at the pianoforte .

Her Majesty ' s staghounds are expected to commence hunting next month , in order to train the hounds preparatory to the opening of the regular season in November .
