Marshall we omitted to mention that he was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in the Aldersgate Chapter , No . 1657 , and that having passed through tbe various offices , he was elected to and installed in ihe chair of M . E . Z . Comp . Marshall remained a subscribing member of this chapter until the day of his death . THE ELECTRIC LIGHT has been successfully installed at the new Town Hall , Croydon , the number of lights in the building being 1000 each of iii-candlc power .

THE MONUMENT to the late Lord Tennyson , now being erected in the Isle of Wight , will be unveiled towards the end of the month by Princess Beatrice , who is Governor of the Island . His EXCELLENCY LI H UNG CHANG arrived at Niagara from Washington on Saturday last and at once proceeeled in a carriage to view the falls from the Canadian side . On Monday he left for Toronto .

PRINCE AND PRINCESS C HARLES OF DENMARK left Marlborough House , where they had been staying since the termination of their visit to the Queen at Osborne , for Appleton House , Sandiingham , on Tuesday . A DINNER was given on Sunday evening last by the Admiral commanding the British Mediterranean Squadron in Phalerum Bay in honour of King George of Greece . The Admiral proposed the health of his Majesty , who acknowledged the compliment and then drank to the Admiral and the British Navy . H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES reached Marlborough House from Homburg shortly after noon on Saturday last and there joined Prince and Princess Charles of Denmark . In the evening the Prince , accompanied by his son-in-law and daughter , visited the Avenue Theatre and witnessed a performance of " Monte Carlo . "

The gallant officer was returning home from shooting in Ihe Isle of Mull , when the vehicle in which he was driving passed over a deep declivity , and was smashed . Major Fosbery received some serious injuries , his collar bone and several ribs being broken .

THE MEMIIERS of the City of London Rifle Association held their final competition for the championship and gold , silver , and bronze medals at the Rainham Ranges on Monday , when Private Luff , London Rifle Brigade , won the championship with a score of 94 points made at the 200 , 500 , and Coo yards , seven shots at each , which , added to a previous score of yo at the same range at the summer meeting gave him the championshi p and gold medal ; Privates Skilton and Little of the same regiment winning the silver and bronze medals respectively .

ACCORDING TO present arrangements the visit of the Emperor and Empress of Russia to this country will be of a strictly private character . The Lord Provost of Edinburgh mentioned at the meeting of the Town Council on Tuesday that in reply to his suggestion to entertain their Majesties on their arrival at Leith on Monday , the 21 st inst ., the Secretary for Scotland had written to say that their Majesties would drive in one of the Queen ' s carriages from the jetty to the Railway Station and proceed forthwith to Balmoral . A Committee was accordingly appointed to arrange for the presentation of an address from the Corporation .

A VERY SERIOUS ACCIIOENT occurred on the 4 U 1 inst . on the railway near Moghrat , which has been constructed in connection with the advance of the Egyptian army on Dongola . A party of men had been told olj under a native officer to push a truck up a steep incline and then take it down the hill on the other side . When they had reached the top , they got into the truck and began to descend , when to their horror they saw an engine on the line below . Theie was no stopping the truck which dashed into the engine with tremendous force , the result being that 2 :: men were injured , some of them very seriously , while the native officer , who jumped out , was killed on the spot .

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN has graciouHy signified her willingness to receive the petition which has been signed in 44 languages by her women subjects in all parts of the world , praying for increased protection against the evils of the liquor traffic and the opium trade . The petition contains over 7 , 000 , 000 signatures ami endorsements , and has been gathered during the last few years by the World's Women ' s Christiai

Temperance Union . As it is impossible to present the immense roll whijh contains the names of the British subjects to the Queen , the pages have been photographed and magnificently bound in two large volumes . The title pages arc beautifully illuminated , and it is a document of histoiic interest and a woik of artistic merit . The Queen will never at one time have received any decument signed by so many of her subjects the world over .

THE POI-E AND THE FREEMASONS . —Our Vienna Correspondent telegraphs : The Pope has addressed the Italian Committee which has arranged an International Congress against Freemasonry , to be held at T ' ritnt , in the Southern Tyrol , during the last days of September . The Pepe cemmends the undertaking , and icfers to the two encyclical letteis which he had published in 1 S 90 and iSyj against Freemasonry . He

expresses the hope that the Congress will have a gnat success , and adds that it is necessary to put the axe to the root of the evil , and to seek out efficacious remedies in order to woik against the advancing influence of the secret societies . The Freemasons must lie unmasked in older to be recognised in their ncfaiiousness and wickedness , for they trust mainly to mystery and secrecy . T HE REGISTRAR-GENERAL ' returns show that the number of deaths during last week were 99 below the average of the corresponding period for the last 10 years . There was , however , an increase in the number of deaths from measles and j diphtheria and also a slight increase in those from whooping-cough and enteric fever . BRO . J GEORGE EVANS , Metropolitan Lodge , No . 1507 , has recently been the recipient of a very handsome gold watch , and Mrs . H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES ' S VISIT TO NORWICH . —A Norwich telegram states that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales will attend the performance of the Norwich Musical Festival on the Sth October . He will be the guest of the members of the County Club , and during his stay in the city will , as M . W . Grand Master , unveil the bust of Bro . Lord Sufficld , Prov . G . M . for Norfolk , which has been subscribed for by all the brethren of the province .

H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES had the good fortune to win the St . Leger on Wednesday with Persimmon , which had previously carried the Royal colours to the front in the Derby , the second of the three great three year-old races of the year . It is needless to say that his Royal Highness ' s victory was popular , and the cheers which arose from all parts of the course when Persimmon ' s success was known were of the most enthusiastic character .

THE DUCHESS OF FIFE had some magnificent sport when fishing on the Dee on Friday , the 14 th inst . Her Royal Highness , in the course of a few hours' fishing in the afternoon , had the satisfaction of landing 12 line salmon , ranging in weight from 0 to 13 lbs . On the following day she caught four , between Slbs . and lolbs ., ann on Monday she landed six more , weighing from 5 lbs . to gibs . In all the Duchess caught with the lly 34 salmon in nine afternoons' fishing .

THE FIRST CLASS CRICKET SEASON was brought to a conclusion on Tuesday , when the match at Hastings between North and South terminated in favour of the latter by five wickets . The scores were small in consequence of the bad wicket , the North making 77 and S 2 and the South 132 and 31 for five wickets , the highest indiiridul totals beinf those of Stoddart ( 43 ) and Brockwell ( 32 ) for the South . Hearne captured 14 wicket ; for 64 runs , bowling 42 overs 1 ball , of which 15 were maidens .

Sn : HENRY EWART , on behalf of her Majesty , presented the Royal Victorian Medal to Mr . W . Dowsett for the pait he took in subduing the fire which broke out in Buckingham Palace on the eve of the Royal Wedding . The presmtation took place at the offices of the Master of the Horse , on Tuesday , Sir II . Ewart , at the same time , reading a letter from her Majesty , in which she complimented Mr . Dowsett on the presence of mind he had exhibited under very trying circumstances .

WE REGRET to have to record the death of Bro . William Smallpiece , Assoc , Mem . Inst . C . E ., and District Surveyor for East Hampstead , which took place on Saturday at his residence , 42 , Well-walk , Hampstead . The deceased was a devoted Freemason , having for some years been the Secretary of the Emulation Lodge of Improvement , while he had served on the Board of General Purposes , besides being a founder and Past Master of several lodges . He was a liveryman of the Painter Stainers' Company . Bro . Smallpeice was in his 57 th year , and leaves no family .

THE PRESENTS WHICH LI HUNG CHANG brought over from China for her Majesty have been arranged in the billiard-room at Osborne . Those which his Excellency presented in the name and on behalf of the Emperor include an old white porcelain vise adorned with red dragons , an antique bronze goblet , two antique bronze incense burners , two old porcelain plates painted blue and green , a handsome white jade vase , decorated with chrysanthemums and fir-trees , and a line yellow plaque with floral adornment . Those presented by Li Hung Chang himself included beautifully embroidered satin ; from the Imperial manufactories , a massive blue and gold vase , & c .

THE EXTRAORDINARY circumstances prevailing for some months in Bulaivayu rendered it somewhat difficult for the B . B . to meet regularly , for the Stock Exchange Hall , ( heir usual meeting-place , was given up for use as barracks for Gilford ' s Horse shortly after the beginning of the native rebellion . The English Church , however , was kindly placed at the lodge ' s disposal , and the B . B . met in that sacred edifice under circumstances probably unique in the annals of Freemasonry ; many of the B . B . had laid aside their rifles for an hour or two in order to be present , more than one large " impi" of the rebels being within five miles of the town at the time—Cap ; Times .

T HE REGISTRAR-GENERAL ' returns show that the number of deaths during last week were 99 below the average of the corresponding period for the last 10 years . H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES had the good fortune to win the St . Leger on Wednesday with Persimmon , which had previously carried the Royal colours to the front in the Derby , the second of the three great three year-old races of the year . It is needless to say that his Royal Highness ' s victory was popular , and the cheers which arose from all parts of the course when Persimmon ' s success was known were of the most enthusiastic character .

THE DUCHESS OF FIFE had some magnificent sport when fishing on the Dee on Friday , the 14 th inst . Her Royal Highness , in the course of a few hours' fishing in the afternoon , had the satisfaction of landing 12 line salmon , ranging in weight from 0 to 13 lbs . On the following day she caught four , between Slbs . and lolbs ., ann on Monday she landed six more , weighing from 5 lbs . to gibs . In all the Duchess caught with the lly 34 salmon in nine afternoons' fishing .

THE FIRST CLASS CRICKET SEASON was brought to a conclusion on Tuesday , when the match at Hastings between North and South terminated in favour of the latter by five wickets . The scores were small in consequence of the bad wicket , the North making 77 and S 2 and the South 132 and 31 for five wickets , the highest indiiridul totals beinf those of Stoddart ( 43 ) and Brockwell ( 32 ) for the South . Sn : HENRY EWART , on behalf of her Majesty , presented the Royal Victorian Medal to Mr . W . Dowsett for the pait he took in subduing the fire which broke out in Buckingham Palace on the eve of the Royal Wedding . Dowsett on the presence of mind he had exhibited under very trying circumstances .

WE REGRET to have to record the death of Bro . William Smallpiece , Assoc , Mem . Inst . C . E ., and District Surveyor for East Hampstead , which took place on Saturday at his residence , 42 , Well-walk , Hampstead . The deceased was a devoted Freemason , having for some years been the Secretary of the Emulation Lodge of Improvement , while he had served on the Board of General Purposes , besides being a founder and Past Master of several lodges . He was a liveryman of the Painter Stainers' Company . Bro . Smallpeice was in his 57 th year , and leaves no family .

THE PRESENTS WHICH LI HUNG CHANG brought over from China for her Majesty have been arranged in the billiard-room at Osborne . Those which his Excellency presented in the name and on behalf of the Emperor include an old white porcelain vise adorned with red dragons , an antique bronze goblet , two antique bronze incense burners , two old porcelain plates painted blue and green , a handsome white jade vase , decorated with chrysanthemums and fir-trees , and a line yellow plaque with floral adornment . Those presented by Li Hung Chang himself included beautifully embroidered satin ; from the Imperial manufactories , a massive blue and gold vase , & c .

THE EXTRAORDINARY circumstances prevailing for some months in Bulaivayu rendered it somewhat difficult for the B . B . to meet regularly , for the Stock Exchange Hall , ( heir usual meeting-place , was given up for use as barracks for Gilford ' s Horse shortly after the beginning of the native rebellion . The English Church , however , was kindly placed at the lodge ' s disposal , and the B . B . met in that sacred edifice under circumstances probably unique in the annals of Freemasonry ; many of the B .
