Routine business having been transacted , the lodge was closed , and
the brethren subsequently partook of an excellent banquet . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were afterwards duly honoured . Bro . Howard H . Room , Prov . G . Sec , on behalf of " The Prov . Grand Officers , " said it afforded him sincere pleasure to return thanks . It was always a source of pleasure to find himself coupled with the toast , because he knew he was
speaking of a worthy and distinguished body of officers , and he believed they would hold their own for energy and work with any other body of Prov . Grand Officers . He spoke from considerable experience , knowing many of them long before he was a Prov . Grand Officer himself . The brethren had only to look round the table that evening to see some good specimens , especially Bros . Vincent , P . P . G SB , and
Dodd , P . P . S . G . D ., and others , who had been honoured by the Prov . Grand Alaster , and he was certain that in every case the honour was merited . It was with great pleasure that he invested Bro . E . Monson with tlie collar of his office as Prov . Grand Superintendent of Works . It was a high office , and it must have been with pleasure and pride that the members heard of the appointment . It
afforded him pleasure to visit that lodge , and it was in consequence of his numerous engagements that he had not been long - before . That was his first visit since he had been Prov . Grand Secretary , and during that period he had visited more than half the lodges in the province . It was with considerable gratification that he saw the work so well carried out , not only the ceremony of installation , but also
the way in which the present W . M . performed his duties . He was » lad to see the Emulation working , and although he should be sorry to force the working , yet , for simplicity and neatness , it was the best , and he thought they should all use their best endeavours to promote , and thus get , as far as possible , uniformity of working . It was especially gratifying- to him to know the members of the lodge would
be under a W . M . who would work the Emulation working . In conclusion he thanked them sincerely for the very kind welcome given the Prov . Grand Officers . Bro . P . Monson , I . P . M ., proposed "The Health of the W . Master , " and said the toast required very few- words from him to make it very acceptable to them . Their W . M ., Bro . Saxton Besant , was initiated in the Villiers
Lodg-e , and had worked through all the offices . They had seen his working in each office he had held , and they had , moreover , seen him that evening work the initiation ceremony , and they must all feel proud to belong- to the lodge and be under such a W . M . during the present year . He hoped they would have plenty of candidates and have plenty of work , for the W . M . was anxious for work-. He
asked them to drink the healthof the W . M . Bro . R . Saxton Besant , VV . M ., returned thanks for the flattering words used by the I . P . M ., and for the reception accorded the toast . He could say that from the day of his initiation it had been his ambition to make a daily advance in Masonic knowledge , and it was a source of great pleasure and honour to be the W . Master of the lodge . He had
visited several lodges in the province , and considered the work in their own lodge as good as any . They had placed confidence in him , and he should endeavour to do his duty , not only creditably to the lodge , but to the Craft in general . He thanked them one and all for the honour conferred upon him , and during his year should endeavour to do his duty . "The Initiate" was next given , and responded to by Bro . Francis in an appropriate speecii .
Ihe W . M . then proposed "The Installing Master and Past Masters , " and paid a high tribute to the work performed in the past by the P . M . ' s . Some of the P . M . ' s fell away , others remained loyal , and it was certainly his own intention to remain a member as long as possible . Theirs was a good working lodge , and he trusted to see the P . M . ' s for many years with them to assist in the work . He had
a pleasant duty to perform in presenting- the Installing Master with a jewel as Past Master of the lodge . That brother had worked creditably , and it was therefore a great pleasure to place the jewel on his breast . That the l . P . M . would have health to be with them for many years was the wish of every member . Bro . Philip Monson , l . P . M ., returned thanks for the
hearty reception given the toast , and also for the handsome jewel preeented to him , which he should always wear with pride . He was sure they all had a proud moment in their lives , and that was truly a proud moment to him to be a P . M . of the lodge . He did not intend to discontinue any assistance he was able to give to the lodge , and hoped to be
with them every time they met . He always felt happy , and contented when he attended the lodge , for they had all been brought up together , and the present officers were initiated in it , and therefore they all had its welfare at heart . He was grateful for their kindness during the past year , and thanked them for the manner in which the toast had been received .
Bro . VV . Dodd , P . P . S . G . D ., Sec , on behalf of the Past Masters , said he was sure they would all do everything they could for the welfare of the lodge . To them it was a fabour of love—and he spoke for himself as the Secretary , and for Bro . Vincent , the Treasurer—and any P . M . would do all he could for the interests of the lodge , and was only too happy to see it flourish .

Bro . W . Vincent , P . P . G . S . B ., Treasurer , also replied . "The Visitors" was given in cordial terms from the chair , and appropriately acknowledged by thc visiting brethren present . Bro . R . T . Pearce , J . W ., replying for "The Officers , " compared the lodg-e to a ship , having the W . M . for its
captain , the Wardens for the chief officers , whilst the P . M . 's ably performed the duties of pilots . Referring to the officers , he said they would all do their best , and , quoting from Sir John Lubbock's "Pleasures of Life , " remarked that theirs was a " duty of happiness from which they experience much happiness in duty . " The Tyler ' s toast concluded a very pleasant evening .

Canning ' s career in the lodge , and spoke of the energy and ability displayed by him in every office he had filled in it . His working of the Degrees was most perfect , while the interest he then and had always
taken in the lodge of instruction proved his earnest desire for the Masonic education and welfare of those who so ably worked in the various offices under him . He therefore asked them to drink thc toast with all the honours it deserved . Bro . Canning , in response , thanked Bro . Savage for his kind and gratifying remarks , while the spontaneity of the brethren ' s reception of them testified that his endeavours
to please them , both in his working and the general conduct of the business of the lodge , were not in vain . He fully endorsed every word Bro . Savage had said with respect to the officers of the lodge , and attributed their excellent working to the lessons taught them in their lodge of instruction . Tlie presentation was made by Bro . E . T . Wise , LP * . [ on behalf of Bro . J . Butler . In doing so he alluded to the Y able services rendered by the Secretary during the time l "" had been connected with the lodge , and to Masonry ^ general . The W . M . accepted the portrait on behalf of Y lodge adding that thc painting would hang on the walls IY remind them of one who had worked hard in the interest of the lodge from its foundation , and to whose efforts tlY
were greatly indebted tor the erection of the handsom . building in which they were now assembled , and also of Y who had contributed materially to the success , not only 01 the Clausentum Lodge , but to " Freemasonry in the Provin of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . The W . M . expressel the pleasure of the brethren at the presence of so many distinguished visitors , and announced apologies for inability t " attend from the W . M . ' s of 359 , 394 , and 1112 . " Hearty good wishes" were given in response , and the lodge Y ? then closed .
About Go brethren sat down to an excellent banquet , prepared by the T y ler , Bro . C Henley , and the customary loyal and Masonic toasts were given and honoured . Bros . Admiral T . H . M . Martin , P . M ., P . P . S . Q VV and E . Sharland , W . M . 76 , P . A . G . P ., responded on behalf of the Provincial Grand Lodge . Bro . J . Methven , P . M . and Treas ,, then proposed what he
considered to be the toast ofthe evening , and that was "The Health of their esteemed Secretary , Bro . Bowyer , " and said that having had the pleasure of working side b y side with Bro . Bowyer from nearly the commencement of the formation of the Clausentum Lodge , he was well able to bear witness to his merit , and the efforts he had put forth in the interests of the lodge , as well as Freemasonry °
-enerally . He felt that the lodge was honoured by having the picture of such an excellent Mason hanging on their walls and it would serve as an incentive to other brethren to strive and emulate the manner in which Bro . Bowyer had always carried out his Masonic duties . He felt sure that no words were needed from him to recommend the toast , as they were all well acquainted with the great services which their
Secretary had rendered . He proposed the health of Bro . Bowyer wishing' him long life and prosperity . The toast was received with great enthusiasm and musical honours , and Bro . Bowyer , in reply , said that in sincerely i thanking Bro . Butler and the lodge for the great honour they had conferred upon him , he almost failed to understand why he should have been selected for such a privilege ; he
had only done what he considered to be the duty of every Freemason—his utmost to advance the interests of the lodge with which for so many years he had been connected , i As one of the founders , its first J . W ., and subsequently Worshipful Master and Secretary , it had been his greatest ambition to see the Clausentum Lodge prosper , and lookin " back over the past 15 years , it was a matter for congratula °
tion to all the brethren to know that from the small efforts ] in starting the lodge at the old Woolston Inn , they were \ now assembled in their own Masonic Hall , and had attained a very high position as a lodge in the province . He felt greatly the honour to know that in coming years , when
possibly he might be removed from them , his portrait would still be hangingon the walls of the lodge , where he had spent some of his happiest hours and made many true and lasting friendships . The toasts of " The Visitors , " " The Worshipful Master , " "The Past Masters , " "The Officers of the Lodge , " and the Tyler ' s toast were then given .
During the evening some excellent harmony was contributed by Bros . H . Kemp , S . J . Line , S . B . Crook , VV . ; H . Smith , H . Lashmore , and others , Bros . Smith and Fowler accompanying at the piano . i The painting , which was executed by Bro . S . Line , a
member of the lodge , is an exceedingly good portrait , representing Bro . Bowyer in P . G . Lodge regalia , and is enclosed in a handsome frame , bearing the following inscription : "Walter Bowyer , 1461 , 394 , 359 , 128 ( S . C ) , P . M ., P . P . G . A . D . C , P . Z ., P . P . G . ist A . S . Presented to the ; Clausentum Lodge by Bro . John Butler . "

Provincial Meetings.
