MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

An appeal is being made by thc London Irish Rides for funds towards the erection of their new head-quarters . The Oueen and thc Duke of Connaught have each contributed £ 25 . The Marquis of Salisbury has gone to the Riviera , where he has recently acquii * . d some property on the lower road from Nice to Monaco , with thc intention of remaining there a week- or ten days .

On Tuesday , thc Queen drove over , in an open carriage and four , from Balmoral to Mar Lodge , where her Majesty lunched with the Duke and Duchess of Fife , returning about 4 p . m . through Braemar to Balmoral . An exhibition of fruit , flowers , and autumn plants was held in the hall of the Horticultural Society , Victoria-street , Westminster , on Tuesday , the attendance of visitors being very numerous , and the quality of the exhibits excellent .

The Ebury Lodge of Instruction resumed its dutie * at the Greyhound Hotel , Streatham Common , on Thursday last , and will continue to meet every Thursday evening , at eight o ' clock , during the winter . The Rev . Joseph Harris , who has celebrated his jubilee in orders , and has been a Master of the City of London School from its foundation , in Milk-street , under Alderman Hale , to the present day , has undertaken to preside at the 28 th anniversary reunion of Old Carpentarians .

The King of Denmark- gave a grand Court hunt on Tuesday in honour of his distinguished guests , the party including his Majesty , the Crown Prince , the Czar , and the Prince of Wales . The Prince and Princess of VVales will leave tomorrow ( Saturday ) by special train , travelling viii Warndoup .

The Secretary of State for War , accompanied by Bro . General Lord Wolseley and Mr . Nepean , Director of Contracts at the War Office , is at present engaged in making a tour of inspection among the manufactories which might be called upon for very large supplies of arms in case of sudden need .

The Bishop of Bedford presided at a meeting held in the Great Assembly Hall , Mile End-road , in support of "The Women ' s Trades Association for promoting Women ' s Trade Unions in East London , " from 1500 to 2000 persons being present , of whom a majority appear to have been sympathisers with the working women .

The British Channel Squadron , under the command of Admiral Band , arrived at Kiel on Tuesday afternoon , and toolup ther moorings in the naval port . In the evening , thc Admiral and his officers were invited by the Emperor William to a grand banquet , his Majesty presiding in thc uniform of a British Admiral of the Fleet .

The British Fruit Growers' Association ( President , Bro . Lord Brooke , M . P . ) held a meeting and conference at the Crystal Palace , Sydenham , on Thursday , the first day of the Hardy Fruit Show , at 3 p . m . Paperson fruit culture were read by Mr . T . Francis Rivers and other authorities . The hon . secretaries are Mr . Lewis Castle , Merlon , Surrey , and Mr . William Early , llford , Essex .

At a regular meeting of the Hadrian Lodge , No . 1970 , held on Tuesday , the ist inst ., Bro . T . D . Marshall , W . M ., presiding , Bro . John T . Ross , S . W ., was unanimously chosen as W . M . for the ensuing 12 months , Bro . Thomas Coulson , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., Treas . ( re-elected ) , and Bro . Thos . Potter , P . M ., P . P . G . T ., Tyler ( re-elected ) . Bros . ] . T . Reed and W . Woodrow were appointed Auditors .

The Torbay Lodge held its installation meeting at Paignton , on Monday , the 30 th ult ., when Bro . R . Light was installed as W . M . by Bro . J . Lane , P . M 1402 , P . P . G . Reg . There was a good attendance of visitors and brethren , and the l . P . M ., Bro . C . W . Perrett , was presented with a P . M . 's jewel , and the Secretary , Bro . J . Bradford , P . M ., with a Secretary's jewel . After the ollicers were

appointed , the annual banquet took place . Bro . Alderman Sir Henry E . Knight is confined to his house , No . 6 , Stratford-place , suffering - from severe concussion of the brain . Sir Henry , who was returning from the United States last week- on board the steamship Umbria ,

fell down some steps leading to one of the decks during the gale , and cut his head severely , besides sustaining concussion . He was unconscious for some time , and was with difficulty removed ashore on the arrival of the vessel , and brought to London . He is being attended by Mr . W . S . Savory .

Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., was presented at Stirling , on Friday , the 4 th inst ., with an illuminated address enclosed in a casket of old oak , panelled with representations in relief of Stirling Castle in oxidised silver , the materials of which it was composed having- been obtained

from the old palace and the ancient Scottish Mint in Stirling . The ceremony of presentation took place in the Public " Hall , and among those present were Bros . Lord Balfour of Burleigh , Sir Archibald Campbell , Bart ., ALP ., Sir A . Orr-Ewing , M . P ., Shaw-Stewart , M . P ., and others .

The new Theatre Royal , Exeter , erected on thc site of the theatre which was destroyed by fire two years since , was opened on Monday , the piece chosen for the occasion being "The Yeomen of the Guard . " The new building is constructed on Bro . Henry Irving's plan , which is held to provide absolute safety from fire or panic . There is only

one gallery above the floor , and so many of thc doors open into the street that it is considered a moderately active audience could make its way out in less than one minute The Mayor and ex-Viayor , with other local personages of note , were present , and the audience generally was very enthusiastic .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a tune when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury

ot our own working people , so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT .

The Provincial Grand Master of North Wales , Bro . Lord Harlech , has summoned a Provincial Grand Lodge , to be held at Barmouth on October 22 nd . Invitations have been issued to the landowne-sand gentry in thc neighbourhood to be present at a display of private theatricals and tableaux at Balmoral , on Monday next , the 14 th instant .

The O'Donoghue , late M . P . forTralec , died on Monday , at his residence Ballmahonoi Court , AthldneJ after a long and severe illness . The deceased was last returned to Parliament for Tralce in 1 SS 0 . By command of thc Provincial Grand Master , the annual Grand Lodge of the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland will be held on Tuesday , the 15 th inst ., at Keswick , under the banner of Greta Lodge , No . 1073 .

Io commemorate Bro . Sir Henry ' s election as Chief Magistrate , Messrs . M . ' Isaacs and Sons ( of which he is the senior partner ) have announced their intention of granting a substantial increase to the salaries of all their staff . We regret to learn that Bro . Sir Daniel Gooch , Prov . G . M . Berks and Bucks , has become much worse . He had slept for a short time during Tuesday night , but became

weaker on Wednesday , and is gradually sinking . The salary of the City Solicitor ( Bro . H . H " Crawford ) , whose attention , courtesy , and skill have won general admiration , was , at the meeting of the Court of Common Council on Thursday last , raised by a unanimous vote from

£ 1500 to ji . 2000 a year . Bro . Deputy Rogers is , we are pleased to hear , better . A consultation on Sunday last with Mr . Bryant ( late senior surgeon Guy ' s Hospital' and Dr . Philips resulted in a favourable opinion , and the treatment lias resulted in continuous improvement .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead was presented at thc Mansion House , on Sa urday last , with a bust of himself by 1000 members of the commercial Travellers' Association . The bust is by Mr . Ons ow Ford , A . R . A ., and the gift was suitably acknowledged by his lordship .

Bro . eir H . Drummond Wolff , H . M . ' s Minister to the Court of Teheran , has left England to resume his duties at the Persian ¦ . ourt . His Excellency will make the journey by way of Constantinople , where he will make a stay of a few days and be received by the bultan .

Preaching in Cambuslang West Established Church , in connection with a Masonic demonstration , Rev . John Elder remarked that to be a good Freemason was to be a friend of man , a sincere , though necessarily imperfect , imitator of that Divine benevolence which dwelt in the heart and manifested itself in the life of the great and good Samaritan .

Walter Martin , P . M . of the Southwark Lodge , was elected Preceptor ; Bro . Wilkinson , Sec . ; Bro . VV . J . Newell , S . W . 79 , Org . ; and Bros . W . H . Thomas , Kerry , and Stemp , Auditors .

Bro . James Judd , J . P ., CC , presided at the opening services of the Friniiuve Methodist Chapel , Hamilton-road , West Norwood , on Monday . Among the subscriptions announced was a second donation of £ 25 Iivm Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall , J . P ., CC , who has taken a warm interest in the building of the church , and the useful Christian work carried on in this part of Norwood .

THE CANNON-STREET HOTEL . —Messrs . Ritter and Puzey have taken this well-known hotel on a lease from the South-Eastern Railway Company , and have just entered into possession . During the last few months all the arrangements of the building have been thoroughly overhauled , and it is now replete with every possible sanitary and other improvement which modern science can suggest to fit it for the high position it has so long held .

A terrible accident occurred on the main line of the London and North Western Railway near Manchester , on the evening of Friday , the 4 th inst ., when a heavily laden passenger train from Stockport came into collision with a pilot goods train , the result being that three carriages ofthe passenger train were smashed , three persons killed , and several more or less seriously injured . One of the latter has since succumbed to his injuries , and others still remain in a critical condition .

Baginton Hall , near Coventry , the Warwickshire scat of Mr . Bromley Davenport M . P ., was destroyed by fire on Monday morning . 'I'he house was occupied by Mr . Sudgen Armitage , its owner having ceased to reside there since his father's death . Only the walls are left standing , but the library , which contained some curious letters and a fine collection of Greek and Roman classics , as well as the

pictures and much of the furniture , was saved . Thc old Hall , which dated from the time of Richard 1 ! ., was burnt down in the early years of the eighteenth century , while Mr . Bromley of that day was Speaker of the House of ¦ ominous , and Parliament voted a considerable sum towards its restoration . In 1714 Queen Anne visited Baginton and planted a cedar in commemoration of the event .

Marshall , jun ., lias presented a bagatelle board to the members of the Young Men ' s Society connected with the Algernon-road Congregational Church

Lcwisham . We are asked to announce that the weekly meetings of St . George's Lodge of Instruction , under the preceptorshin of Bro . U . Brown , P . M . and Sec . 140 , are now resumed at the New Cross Hall ( lodge room ) every Tuesday evenin" - at eight o'clock . ° '

Messrs . Donald Currie and Co . ' s Royal Mail steamer Roslin ' Castle , which is expected at Plymouth to-morrow ( Saturday ) , made the run between Cape Town and Madeira in thirteen days four hours , which excels all previous records by nearly six hours .

Bro . Montagu Williams met with a serious accident whilst driving in a pony carriage at Ramsgate . The ponies bolted , and ran the carriage into a fence , where it was overturned and smashed . Bro . Williams was thrown into the road , and a part of the carriage fell on his chest , injuring him severely . a

THE FANMAKERS' COMPANY . — In recognition of the services he has rendered to the Craft , it is proposed to present Bro . George Augustus Sala with the honorary freedom of this company . The matter will be formall y submitted by the Master at a meeting ofthe court , which is to be held on Wednesday , the 23 rd inst .

Bro . the Earl of Zetland , the newly-appointed Viceroy of Ireland , arrived in Dublin early on Saturday last , and at noon , in the Privy Council Chamber at the Castle , was sworn into oflice before the Lord Justices—Bro . Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor ) and Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar . There were many ladies present to witness the ceremony .

Arrangements are in progress at St . Petersburg for a "Rubinstein Jubilee , " to consist of publicaddressesin honour of the great musician , evening concerts and matinees , at which many of his original compositions will be performed as , well as several new works , the whole to wind up with a grand banquet under Royal patronage , and the presentation of certain valuable tokens of hi gh and honourable appreciation .

THE SPECTACLEMAKERS' COMPANY . —The members of the court met a day or two since , the business engaging attention including the election of Master and Wardens for the year ensuing . Mr . W . J . Ford ( Hoare and Company ) was elected Master , and Bro . Alderman Sir P . De Keyser was appointed Warden . Bro . Sheriff Harris , who is a member of the company , has presented to the court a banner of his arms .

The funeral of Bro . H . S . Leverton , F . R . C . S ., of Truro , whose death occurred on the 26 th ult ., took place on the following Tuesday . The deceased was for some 36 years surgeon to the "Temple of Peace" Lodge of Oddfellows , and was presented in 1 S 72 with an illuminated address and

a handsome silver centre-piece for his services to the lodge , and a 'further presentation took place when he recently resigned bis office as surgeon of the lodge . Bro . Leverton was highly respected , and will be missed alike by the brethren of the Phoenix Lodge and the public in general .

Bro .. Lord Mayor Whitehead is bravely seconding the efforts of the Fruiterers' Company to bring about a restoration of fruit gardens and orchards in connection with our homesteads and orchards . His lordship points out that , except in Kent and a lew other counties , our orchards have been allowed to fall into decay , and that we are annually paying large sums to the foreigner for apples , pears , and plums , which might easily and more profitabl y be grown

at Iiome . ^ Ihe 1 'ruiterers Company propose to raise a fund of £ 5000 to encourage fruit growing , and intend giving prizes in successive counties for the best orchards connected with ordinary farms and cottages . The Company have themselves contributed £ 500 , and it is this effort which Bro . Whitehead is seconding , by inviting the livery companies and leading city firms to contribute before appealing to the public generally .

DEATH OK BRO . SIR BENJAMIN PHILLIPS . —Sir Benjamin Samuel Phillips , a leading member of the Jewish community in London , and formerly an Alderman of the City , died on VVednesday morning at his residence , 17 , Grosvenorstreet , after a long illness . Sir Benjamin , who was born in 1 S 11 , carried on business as a merchant and warehouseman in London from 1 S 30 until rSSfi , under the style of Messrs .

Faudel Phillips and Sons , of Newgate-street , of which firm his two sons are now the partners . In 1 S 57 , on the resignation of Mr . Alderman Eagleton , he was elected Alderman of the Ward of Farringdon Within ; in 1 S 59 , in the Mayoralty of Mr . Alderman Carter , he , with Sir Thomas Gabriel , served the office of Sheriff of London and Middlesex ; and in 1 S 65-G he was Lord Mayor .

His term of office was rendered memorable by the relief measures taken under his auspices at the Mansion House to alleviate the sufferings caused by the visitation ol cholera in the metropolis . There was also a fund raised for the relief of the distress occasioned by the Indian famine . Sir Benjamin Phillips , while Lord Mayor , had thehonourof receiving as his guests in the City the King and Queen of

the Belgians , who afterwards entertained him in Brussels , and bestowed on him the distinction of Commander of the Order of the Leopold . At the close of his Mayoralty , the Queen conferred a knighthood upon him . Sir Benjamin Phillips continued to act as an Alderman of the City until last year , when he resigned , owing to failing health , and was succeeded by his second son , Mr . George Faudel Phillips . His only daughter is married to Baron Henry de Worms , M . P .

The Torbay Lodge held its installation meeting at Paignton , on Monday , the 30 th ult ., when Bro . R . Light was installed as W . M . by Bro . J . Lane , P . M 1402 , P . P . G . Reg . There was a good attendance of visitors and brethren , and the l . P . M ., Bro . C . W . Perrett , was presented with a P . M . 's jewel , and the Secretary , Bro . J . Bradford , P . M ., with a Secretary's jewel . After the ollicers were

appointed , the annual banquet took place . Bro . Alderman Sir Henry E . Knight is confined to his house , No . 6 , Stratford-place , suffering - from severe concussion of the brain . Sir Henry , who was returning from the United States last week- on board the steamship Umbria ,

fell down some steps leading to one of the decks during the gale , and cut his head severely , besides sustaining concussion . He was unconscious for some time , and was with difficulty removed ashore on the arrival of the vessel , and brought to London . He is being attended by Mr . W . S . Savory .

Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., was presented at Stirling , on Friday , the 4 th inst ., with an illuminated address enclosed in a casket of old oak , panelled with representations in relief of Stirling Castle in oxidised silver , the materials of which it was composed having- been obtained

from the old palace and the ancient Scottish Mint in Stirling . The ceremony of presentation took place in the Public " Hall , and among those present were Bros . Lord Balfour of Burleigh , Sir Archibald Campbell , Bart ., ALP ., Sir A . Orr-Ewing , M . P ., Shaw-Stewart , M . P ., and others .

The new Theatre Royal , Exeter , erected on thc site of the theatre which was destroyed by fire two years since , was opened on Monday , the piece chosen for the occasion being "The Yeomen of the Guard . " The new building is constructed on Bro . Henry Irving's plan , which is held to provide absolute safety from fire or panic . There is only

one gallery above the floor , and so many of thc doors open into the street that it is considered a moderately active audience could make its way out in less than one minute The Mayor and ex-Viayor , with other local personages of note , were present , and the audience generally was very enthusiastic .

THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a tune when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than £ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury

The Provincial Grand Master of North Wales , Bro . Lord Harlech , has summoned a Provincial Grand Lodge , to be held at Barmouth on October 22 nd . Invitations have been issued to the landowne-sand gentry in thc neighbourhood to be present at a display of private theatricals and tableaux at Balmoral , on Monday next , the 14 th instant .

The O'Donoghue , late M . P . forTralec , died on Monday , at his residence Ballmahonoi Court , AthldneJ after a long and severe illness . The deceased was last returned to Parliament for Tralce in 1 SS 0 . By command of thc Provincial Grand Master , the annual Grand Lodge of the Province of Cumberland and Westmorland will be held on Tuesday , the 15 th inst ., at Keswick , under the banner of Greta Lodge , No . 1073 .

Io commemorate Bro . Sir Henry ' s election as Chief Magistrate , Messrs . M . ' Isaacs and Sons ( of which he is the senior partner ) have announced their intention of granting a substantial increase to the salaries of all their staff . We regret to learn that Bro . Sir Daniel Gooch , Prov . G . M . Berks and Bucks , has become much worse . He had slept for a short time during Tuesday night , but became

weaker on Wednesday , and is gradually sinking . The salary of the City Solicitor ( Bro . H . H " Crawford ) , whose attention , courtesy , and skill have won general admiration , was , at the meeting of the Court of Common Council on Thursday last , raised by a unanimous vote from

£ 1500 to ji . 2000 a year . Bro . Deputy Rogers is , we are pleased to hear , better . A consultation on Sunday last with Mr . Bryant ( late senior surgeon Guy ' s Hospital' and Dr . Philips resulted in a favourable opinion , and the treatment lias resulted in continuous improvement .

Bro . Lord Mayor Whitehead was presented at thc Mansion House , on Sa urday last , with a bust of himself by 1000 members of the commercial Travellers' Association . The bust is by Mr . Ons ow Ford , A . R . A ., and the gift was suitably acknowledged by his lordship .

Bro . eir H . Drummond Wolff , H . M . ' s Minister to the Court of Teheran , has left England to resume his duties at the Persian ¦ . ourt . His Excellency will make the journey by way of Constantinople , where he will make a stay of a few days and be received by the bultan .

Preaching in Cambuslang West Established Church , in connection with a Masonic demonstration , Rev . John Elder remarked that to be a good Freemason was to be a friend of man , a sincere , though necessarily imperfect , imitator of that Divine benevolence which dwelt in the heart and manifested itself in the life of the great and good Samaritan .

At the last meeting of the Hadrian Lodge , No . 197 C , Bro . T . D . Marshall , W . M ., presiding , Bro . J . T . Ross , S . W ., was unanimously chosen as VV . M . for the ensuing 12 months . Bro . T . Coulson , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., was re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . T . Potter , P . M ., P . P . G . T ., Tyler , was re-appointed to that office . Bros . John T . Reed and VV . Bro . James Judd , J . P ., CC , presided at the opening services of the Friniiuve Methodist Chapel , Hamilton-road , West Norwood , on Monday . Among the subscriptions announced was a second donation of £ 25 Iivm Bro . Horace Brooks Marshall , J . P ., CC , who has taken a warm interest in the building of the church , and the useful Christian work carried on in this part of Norwood .

THE CANNON-STREET HOTEL . —Messrs . Ritter and Puzey have taken this well-known hotel on a lease from the South-Eastern Railway Company , and have just entered into possession . During the last few months all the arrangements of the building have been thoroughly overhauled , and it is now replete with every possible sanitary and other improvement which modern science can suggest to fit it for the high position it has so long held .

A terrible accident occurred on the main line of the London and North Western Railway near Manchester , on the evening of Friday , the 4 th inst ., when a heavily laden passenger train from Stockport came into collision with a pilot goods train , the result being that three carriages ofthe passenger train were smashed , three persons killed , and several more or less seriously injured . One of the latter has since succumbed to his injuries , and others still remain in a critical condition .

Baginton Hall , near Coventry , the Warwickshire scat of Mr . Bromley Davenport M . P ., was destroyed by fire on Monday morning . 'I'he house was occupied by Mr . Sudgen Armitage , its owner having ceased to reside there since his father's death . Only the walls are left standing , but the library , which contained some curious letters and a fine collection of Greek and Roman classics , as well as the

pictures and much of the furniture , was saved . Thc old Hall , which dated from the time of Richard 1 ! ., was burnt down in the early years of the eighteenth century , while Mr . Bromley of that day was Speaker of the House of ¦ ominous , and Parliament voted a considerable sum towards its restoration . In 1714 Queen Anne visited Baginton and planted a cedar in commemoration of the event .

Messrs . Donald Currie and Co . ' s Royal Mail steamer Roslin ' Castle , which is expected at Plymouth to-morrow ( Saturday ) , made the run between Cape Town and Madeira in thirteen days four hours , which excels all previous records by nearly six hours .

Bro . Montagu Williams met with a serious accident whilst driving in a pony carriage at Ramsgate . The ponies bolted , and ran the carriage into a fence , where it was overturned and smashed . Bro . Williams was thrown into the road , and a part of the carriage fell on his chest , injuring him severely . a

THE FANMAKERS' COMPANY . — In recognition of the services he has rendered to the Craft , it is proposed to present Bro . George Augustus Sala with the honorary freedom of this company . The matter will be formall y submitted by the Master at a meeting ofthe court , which is to be held on Wednesday , the 23 rd inst .

Bro . the Earl of Zetland , the newly-appointed Viceroy of Ireland , arrived in Dublin early on Saturday last , and at noon , in the Privy Council Chamber at the Castle , was sworn into oflice before the Lord Justices—Bro . Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor ) and Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar . There were many ladies present to witness the ceremony .

Arrangements are in progress at St . Petersburg for a "Rubinstein Jubilee , " to consist of publicaddressesin honour of the great musician , evening concerts and matinees , at which many of his original compositions will be performed as , well as several new works , the whole to wind up with a grand banquet under Royal patronage , and the presentation of certain valuable tokens of hi gh and honourable appreciation .

THE SPECTACLEMAKERS' COMPANY . —The members of the court met a day or two since , the business engaging attention including the election of Master and Wardens for the year ensuing . Mr . W . J . Ford ( Hoare and Company ) was elected Master , and Bro . Alderman Sir P . De Keyser was appointed Warden . Bro . Sheriff Harris , who is a member of the company , has presented to the court a banner of his arms .

The funeral of Bro . H . S . Leverton , F . R . C . S ., of Truro , whose death occurred on the 26 th ult ., took place on the following Tuesday . The deceased was for some 36 years surgeon to the "Temple of Peace" Lodge of Oddfellows , and was presented in 1 S 72 with an illuminated address and

a handsome silver centre-piece for his services to the lodge , and a 'further presentation took place when he recently resigned bis office as surgeon of the lodge . Bro . Leverton was highly respected , and will be missed alike by the brethren of the Phoenix Lodge and the public in general .

Bro .. Lord Mayor Whitehead is bravely seconding the efforts of the Fruiterers' Company to bring about a restoration of fruit gardens and orchards in connection with our homesteads and orchards . His lordship points out that , except in Kent and a lew other counties , our orchards have been allowed to fall into decay , and that we are annually paying large sums to the foreigner for apples , pears , and plums , which might easily and more profitabl y be grown

at Iiome . ^ Ihe 1 'ruiterers Company propose to raise a fund of £ 5000 to encourage fruit growing , and intend giving prizes in successive counties for the best orchards connected with ordinary farms and cottages . The Company have themselves contributed £ 500 , and it is this effort which Bro . Whitehead is seconding , by inviting the livery companies and leading city firms to contribute before appealing to the public generally .

DEATH OK BRO . SIR BENJAMIN PHILLIPS . —Sir Benjamin Samuel Phillips , a leading member of the Jewish community in London , and formerly an Alderman of the City , died on VVednesday morning at his residence , 17 , Grosvenorstreet , after a long illness . Sir Benjamin , who was born in 1 S 11 , carried on business as a merchant and warehouseman in London from 1 S 30 until rSSfi , under the style of Messrs .

Faudel Phillips and Sons , of Newgate-street , of which firm his two sons are now the partners . In 1 S 57 , on the resignation of Mr . Alderman Eagleton , he was elected Alderman of the Ward of Farringdon Within ; in 1 S 59 , in the Mayoralty of Mr . Alderman Carter , he , with Sir Thomas Gabriel , served the office of Sheriff of London and Middlesex ; and in 1 S 65-G he was Lord Mayor .

His term of office was rendered memorable by the relief measures taken under his auspices at the Mansion House to alleviate the sufferings caused by the visitation ol cholera in the metropolis . There was also a fund raised for the relief of the distress occasioned by the Indian famine . Sir Benjamin Phillips , while Lord Mayor , had thehonourof receiving as his guests in the City the King and Queen of

the Belgians , who afterwards entertained him in Brussels , and bestowed on him the distinction of Commander of the Order of the Leopold . At the close of his Mayoralty , the Queen conferred a knighthood upon him . Sir Benjamin Phillips continued to act as an Alderman of the City until last year , when he resigned , owing to failing health , and was succeeded by his second son , Mr . George Faudel Phillips . His only daughter is married to Baron Henry de Worms , M . P .
