Consecration Of The First Temperance Lodge Of Mark Master Masons—The King Solomon, No. 385.
CONSECRATION OF THE FIRST TEMPERANCE LODGE OF MARK MASTER MASONS—THE KING SOLOMON , No . 385 .
The consecration of the Lodge of King Solomon , No . 2029 ( Craft ) , and one or two other semi-Temperance lodges has done much to dispel the popular notions that Masonry is opposed to Temperance , and that no consistent
teetotaller can become a Mason . The consecration of the King Solomon Mark Lodge , as a purely Temperance lodge , is an evidence that Masonic opposition to such lodges is on the turn , and we hope to see many Masonic gatherings in which our teetotal brethren can work our beautiful ritual and ceremonies with those of their own persuasion ; and we are sure that no true-hearted Mason
will grudge them their festive board at which Bacchus has no part . Of the founders , Bro . E . J . Mills , A . G . I . G ., P . M . 350 , may be mentioned as most energetic in the work , and the one to whom the credit of founding the lodge is chiefly due . Of the advancees , Bro . Lieut . T . W . Richardson , J . W . 2029 ( Craft ; , has been most active . The latter took a
great liking to the "beautiful little keystone" when he was still in his teens , and quite made up his mind to be a Mason if his Temperance principles were not a bar to it . The consecration took place on Saturday evening last , the 5 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Sa , Red Lion Square , W . C , the Consecrating Officer being R . W . Bro . C . F . Matier , P . G . P . Baptie , J . P ., Dr . Williams , R . A . Gowan , W . Matthews , and A . Wells , all of 2029 , and , proving unanimous , they wereduly advanced to the Degree of a M . M .
The Consecrating Officer having been received with Grand honours , assumed the chair , and the first part of the anthem " Mark Masters all appear , " was heartily rendered . The founders of the new lodge were then arranged in order , and the Consecrating Officer addressed them on the nature of the meeting , after which he called on the G . D . of C . to state their wishes , and the proceedings they had taken in
respect to the lodge . The G . D . of C read the prayer and petition , which had been duly approved by the Pro G . M . M ., and also the warrant from the Grand Lodge of England , and the brethren signified their approval of the officers named therein . The second part of the anthem was rendered , and the usual ceremonies of consecration were then proceeded with , the
wine used being the pure non-alcoholic blood of the grape , " in deference to the principles of the members of the new lodge , all of whom are teetotallers . A splendidly rendered oration by Bro . the Rev . HAYMAN CUMMINGS was listened to with great pleasure by all . Bro . Harry Tipper having been installed as W . M ., was saluted according to ancient custom . He then invested
his officers as follows : Bros . Axford , I . P . M . ; Roy , S . W . ; Lee , J . W . ; Richardson , M . O . ; Baptie , S . O . ; Dr . Williams , J . O . ; Gowan , S . D . ; Matthews , J . John Strachan , P . M . 34 6 , was proposed
as a joining member . The lodge was then closed in due form . 1 he banquet was held at the Freemasons' Tavern , Great Queen-street . The toasts of " The Oueen , " His Royal Highness the M . W . G . The New Lord Mayor Of London.
THE NEW LORD MAYOR OF LONDON .
There was the usual pageant in honour of "Lord Mayor ' s Day " on Wednesday under conditions of weather which could not well have been more unpropitious . However , what under the circumstances must be considered large ero vds assembled along the line of route to witness the procession , and in the evening the usual grand banquet was
held at the Guildhall , under the presidency of the new Lord Mayor , Bro . Alderman De Keyser . Her Majesty ' s ministers were strongly represented , and there were also present representatives of the judicial bench , of the bar , and of the foreign ministers . Among the speakers were the Prime Minister , Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., who replied for "The Navy , " Bros . Lord Halsbury , Lord Chancellor ,
Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., the retiring Lord Mayor , and Bro . Sheriff Higgs . Bro . Lord Mayor De Keyser is to be congratulated on the brilliant success of his inaugural banquet , which certainly made some amends for the discomforts of the weather . He proved himself a most capable president and a fluent speaker , the brief remarks with which he prefaced the several toasts he proposed
being conceived in excellent taste and very much to the point , and the hearty applause with which they were greeted must have been very gratifying to his lordship . The new Lord Mayor stands alone among the citizens who for a long series of years has attained the position he now occupies in two particulars . He is a Roman Catholic and he is a naturalised Englishman , not an Englishman
by birth . He is the son of Mr . C . de Keyser , the founder of the business now carried on at the corner of the Thames Embankment , and known as the Royal Hotel , and was borne at Termonde , in Belgium , on the 13 th December , 1 S 32 . Originally it was intended that he should follow the medical profession , but the fates had willed it otherwise , and in 1 SCI 0 he took upon himself the management of his
father's business , with what success may be judged from the development which has since taken place under his auspices . After 15 years service in the Court of Common Council as representative of the Ward of Farringdon Without , Bro . De Keyser was elected its Alderman in 1 SS 2 , on the retirement of the late Alderman Figgins . He served the olfice of Sheriff of
London and Middlesex the same year , Bro . Alderman Savory being his colleague on the shrievalty , and Bro . Alderman Sir H . E . Knight being the occupant of the Civic Chair . On Michaelmas day last , he attained the object of his ambition , and was unanimously chosen successor to Bro . Alderman Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart . His lordship is a member of the Guilds of Spectacle Makers ' ,
Loriners ' , Butchers ' , Innholders , Poulterers ' , and Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers ' , a Fellow of the Society of Arts ' , the Royal Geographical Society , and the Statistical Society , a Governor of Bridewell , Bethlehem , Christ's , St . Thomas's , and St . Bartholomew ' s Hospitals , and a member of the City Liberal and Junior Travellers' Clubs . He is an excellent linguist , and while a member of the ist
Surrey Rifle Volunteers , attained considerable proficiency as a marksman . He is an officer of the Royal Order of Leopold of Belgium , a distinction which was conferred upon him on the occasion of a visit paid to Brussels by a deputation from the City of London , of which Bra . De Keyser was a member , during the Mayorality of Bro . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., to congratulate the King of the Belgians on the steps his Majesty had taken
for opening up the Congo District , the distinction being in the nature of a promotion from the grade of Knight of the same Order , which he had previously received . Among those present either in the procession or at the banquet , or at both , were Bros . Lord Halsbury , Lord High Chancellor of England ; Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., Sir James Fergusson , Bart ., M . P ., the Hon . H . S . Northcote , M . P ., Sir Edward Clarke , M . P ., and others .
"Ladies' Night" At The Surrey Masonic Hall Lodge, No. 1539.
" LADIES' NIGHT" AT THE SURREY MASONIC HALL LODGE , No . 1539 .
On Wednesday , the 2 nd inst ., a most successful " ladies ' night" was held in connection with the above lodge . 'The idea originated with Bro . W . G . Cannon , P . M ., and was heartily taken up by the present VV . M ., Bro . J . James . A
Committee was lormed , consisting of Bros . E . J . Williams , W . M . elect ; J . Burn , Org . ; C ' ureton , W . S . ; Cannon , P . M . ; Huffer , Bromley Smith , J . VV . ; G . J . Venables , J . D . ; and J . Morgan , Sec . ; and to these brethren certainly is attributable the genuine success of the undertaking . The entertainment took the form of a banquet and concert . About 40 ladies and gentlemen sat down , and all seemed to
enjoy the excellent fare provided by Bro . G . J . Venables , the popular caterer . After a slight interval , the musical portion of the programme was commenced by the singing of the grace . The speeches were short and pithy , and the singing all that could be desired , the lollowing contributing several items each during the evening : Madame Maud Cameron , Miss Mary Horton , Bro . Arthur Weston , Mr . James Budd , Mr . A . j . Slade , Bro , John Morgan , and Bro . Cannon , P . M . Bro . I . Burn presided at the pianoforte .
