Bro . Lord and Lady Hothfield have returned to Hothfield-place , Kent , for the winter , having spent the autumn at Appleby Castle , Westmoreland . His Highness the Maharajah of Kuch-Behar , Past G . Warden of England , arrived at Sandringham House on Monday on a visit to the Prince of Wales . The Prince of Wales , attended by Colonel Ellis and Bro . Sir Francis Knollys , arrived at Sandringham House , on Saturday afternoon last , for the winter

season . Bro . Lord Stanley of Pieston , minister in attendance on the Queen at Balmoral , had the honour of dining with her Majesty on Friday and Saturday of last week .

According to the Canadian Craftsman , there is a prospect ol the Grand Lodge of Canada being provided at an early date with a peimanent home . We rejoice to hear such good news . The Baroness Burdett-Coutts has contributed £ iooo , and Bro . Burdett-Coutts , M . P ., £ 500 towards the fund now being raised to complete the sum required for

the purchase of Parliament-hill , Highgate . On Friday , the 4 th inst ., Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , M . P ., entertained at dinner at the Queen ' s Hotel , Birmingham , the members of the central Committee of the National Association of Journalists and several members of the Birmingham press . A handsome tablet was , last week , unveiled in

Bideford Church in memory of the late Bro . Rear-Admiral Bedford Pirn , and an international monument is about to be placed in the Seamen ' s Church , at Bristol , to commemorate the services rendered by the deceased to the pilots . At a meeting of the Royal Gloucestershire Lodge , No . S 39 , at Gloucester , on Friday , the 4 th inst ., the Very Rev . H . D . M . Spence , Dean of Gloucester , was initiated

into Freemasonry , the ceremony being performed by Bro . J . L . Bretherton , the VV . M . of the lodge . The newly organised Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of New Brunswick was recognised by the Grand Chapter of Massachusetts on its Quarterly Convocation on the 20 th September last . Bro . Edward Leader Shepherd , P . M . 945 , P . P . G . S . B . Berks and Bucks , has been elected Mayor of Abingdon .

Bro . Earl Granville addressed a political meeting which was held at Hanley on Monday evening , and over which Bro . Lord Burton presided . The offertories collected in Truro Cathedral on the 3 rd inst . at its consecration amounted to £ 1736 3 s . 1 id ., those on the occasion of the foundation stone being laid , on the 20 th May , 1 SS 0 , having been close on £ 1592 .

The Grand Lodge of Vermont has voted the sum of 100 dollars ( £ 20 ) towards the monument proposed to be erected at Milton , Vt ., to the memory of Bro . Noah Smith , whose remains lie buried there , and who was the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Vermont . We regret to hear that a burglary was committed at the residence of Bro . Baron G . Uc Worms , Milton

Park , Egham , on I uesday night , when jewellery belonging to the Baroness and of the estimated value of i ' 900 was carried off . As yet no trace of the burglars or of the stolen property has been obtained . Prince Albert Victor of Wales has joined the gth Lancers at York , and has been posted as Captain of the B Troop at the York Cavalry Barracks . On iiunday his Royal Highness attended Divine service with his troop ,

and on Monday reported himself to the general commanding the district . A deputation , introduced by Bro . Akers-Douglas , M . P ., was received by Bro . Baron Henry De Worms , M . P ., at the offices of the Board of Trade on Tuesday , on the subject of the oyster fisheries in the estuary of the Thames , and their threatened extinction , owing to the refuse , which of late it bad become the practice to bring down to the Isle of Sheppey in barges and throw into ths

river . The Canadian Craftsman is of opinion that the marvellous progress of Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England is due to the establishment of Provincial Grand Lodges , and considers it would be a judicious step on the part of the Giand Lodge of Canada if it adopted a similar plan of local organisation .

Bro . Sir H . Bullard , on retiring from the office of Mayor of the City of Norwich , has been presented with the freedom of the city , beautifully engrossed and illuminated on vellum , and inclosed in a handsome silver gilt casket . At the same time Lady BuUard was presented with a diamond crescent brooch and a hair-spray of coralline pearls .

Argall , artist , of Truro , has succeeded in taking some really very good photographs of the portion of the Cathedral which is completed , and likewise of the Bishop of 'Truro ( Dr . Wilkinson ) , the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Chairman of

the Committee , and other dignitaries , the style and accuracy of which do him credit . At the close of his year of office as Mayor of Croydon , Bro . A . T . Layion , J . P ., C . C ., has entertained at a banquet the numerous staff of the corporation , including the inspectors , roadmen , dustmen , fire brigade men , and others . On another evening the retiring Mayor

gave a musical and ventnloquial entertainment to the inmates of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , Bro . Laj ton has given several other entertainments during the past few weeks , at which several hundreds of the resiaents of the districts have been entertained . Un this point a local journal remarks : " It cannot be said of Alderman Layton at the expiration of his term of office that meanness

has been a cardinal failing of his . On the contrary , his mayoralty has been marked by a liberality and kindness of heart which will not soon be forgotten . Seven tenders ranging between £ 1544 and £ 1342 have been received for the erection of Bro . James Willing ' s presentation clock-tower to the borough of Brighton . Bro . Sir Archibald Campbell , of Blythesvvood , M . P ., has been ordered by his medical adviser to take a

yachting cruise in the Mediterranean this winter for the recovery of his health . We are glad to hear that the Princess Louise of Wales , who has , like her sisters , had a mild attack of measles , is rapidly recovering , and is already well on the way towards complete convalescence .

Her Majesty has sent £ 25 to Mr . James Lee , of Goole , who on the occasion ot the Jubilee celebration there was so seriously injured by an explosion of fireworks as to have lost his eyesight . A local relief fund is being raised ; Bro . R . F . Gould , the well known Masonic historian , was on Tuesday last installed as W . M . of the

Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 207 G , in succession to Bro . Sir Charles Warren . A full report will appear in our next . Bro . Sir James Ramsden , P . G . D . of England , who was somewhat severely injured by stumbling over a portmanteau in a railway caniage last week , is progressing favourably but slowly , his injuries having turned out to be

more severe than was originally supposed . Wednesday being the 46 th anniversary of the birth of the r rince of Wales , the occasion was marked by the firing of the usual salutes , while the principal thoroughfares at the West-end were illuminated . At fcandringham , the labourers on the Royal estate had their annual dinnet

in the Royal-mews . We have received , but too late for review this week , Bro . Henry Sadler ' s promised work , entitled * ' Masonic Facts and Fictions . " The exterior appearance ot the volume is much to be commended , and will , no doubt , prove to be a just reflex of the worthiness of the

contents . We shall give our attention to the latter at an early date . Bro . Major George Lambert , Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths' Company , presided on Monday night at the twenty-first annual dinner of the Goldsmiths' and Jewellers' Annuity and Asylum Institution , held at the Holborn Restaurant , when subscriptions amounting to

parties at the next General Election for the Spalding division ot Lincolnshire . Both Bro . Clarke and his wife were born near to the district in question , and this fact materially enhances the honour confeired upon him by the electors , in selecting him as their champion for the seat in the next Parliament .

Through the instrumentality of Bro . Dr . C . D . Hill-Drury the banqueting room of the Darlington Masonic Hall has just been thoroughly renovated and tastefully decorated . The cost of the work has amounted to about , f . ' S 5 , and our Danington brethren may now be congiatulated upon possessing one of the handsomest

lodge rooms and banqueting halls in the north of England . At the last monthly meetings of the Restoration and Marquess of Ripon Lodges votes of thanks were most deservedly passed to Bro . Dr . Hill-Diury , who had collected the subscriptions for the improvements and superintended the work .

A veiy great yet well-deserved compliment was made at the last meeting of the Hartinglon Lodge , No . 1021 , Barrow-in-Furntss , to Bro . Morphet , who is leaving England to establish himself with his wife and family in Meloourne . Bro . Morphet , who has been a member of the lodge for upwards of 22 years , and will retain his

connection with it still , was presented on the occasion with an address beautifully engraved and illuminated on vellum , together with a handsomely bound album containing memorial photographs of his brother members , and also a gold locket and chain lor Mrs . Morphtt . The piesentation was made by Brcs . Cook , P . M ., and Worrall , P . M ., and

feelingly acknowledged by the recipient , who was after , wards entertained at a larewell supper . We wish Bro , Morphet all possible success in his new sphere of life . Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex went in state , on Saturday last , to open the new park between the Kensal-green and Quetn ' s-park

Stations on the London and North- Western Railway . . T " X were received with grtat heartiness all along the line or route , and , on their arrival at the spot chosen for the ceremony , his lordship having opened the park , and with the Queen ' s permission bestowed on it the name of the " Queen ' s Park , " the company returned to town , and in the evening dined at the Guildhall Tavern .
