each of whom dwelt upon the excellent work that was being done bv means of the Charitable Associations , and strongly urged the brethren to support them as far as lay in their power . The Tieasurer and Secretary replied to the toast of their healths , the latter officer alluding to the lodge of instruction , which was about to be resuscitated , under the Preceptorship of Bro . Thompson , at the Seven Sisters' Hotel , Tottenham , in which neighbourhood many members of the

lodge resided , and earnestly asked the support of the brethren in placing it on a firm footing . Bros . A . Money , S . W ., and E . M . Money , J . W .. responded for "The Officers , " assuring the W . M . that they would assist him as much as they possibly could , andstrive to uphotd the prestige of the lodge . The Tyler ' s toast then brought to a close one of the most successful and pleasant installation meetings of this lodge . ———

FARRINGDON WITHOUT LODGE ( No . 1745 ) , — This representative civic lodge met at the Viaduct Hotel , Holborn , E . C , on the 30 th ult . Among those present were Bros , foseph Young , VV . M . ; T . Simpson , S . W . ; 1 . Strugnell , P . M ., acting J . W . ; H . J . Lardner , P . P . G . O . Surrey , P . M ., Treas . ; VV . H . Jackson , P . M ., Sec . ; L . Lardner , I . G . ; E . M . Lolt , G . Org ., & c , Hon . Member ; T . C . Walls , P . P . G . S . B . Middx ., P . M . ; Longley , and others . Bro . Hoare , P . M . 1765 , was a visitor .

The minutes of the previous nveting having been read and confirmed , the resignation of Bro . Clark , P . G . P ., was received with regret . Letters pleading inability to attend were read from Bros . H . B . Marshall , P . G . Treas ., P . M . ; Skelhorn , J . D . ; and others . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment . A few t lasts followed . 'The proceedings were considerably enhanced by the instrumental and vocal abilities of Bros . Lott , Hoare , J . Young , L . Lardner , and others .

ST . LEONARD LODGE ( No . 1766 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday evening at the Town Hall , Shoreditch , when Bro . James Funston , VV . M ., presided . There was an excellent attendance of members of the lodge and visitors . After the opening of the lodge and the reading and confirmation of the minutes , and the passing of the Audit Committee ' s accounts , Bro . Louis Stean , P . M ., by desire of the W . M .

performed the ceremony of installaiion , for which purpose Br 1 , E . Walker , S . W . and W . M . elect , was presented to hitn by Bro . Funston . At the conclusion of the ceremony the ; following brethren were made officers of the lodge tor theyear : Bros . F . Matthews , S . W . ; R . Drysdale , J . W . ; Daniel King , Treas . ; J , Cox , Sec . ; Henderson , Chap . ; H . J . Thrower , S . D . ; L . A . Harrison , J . D . ; G . C . Young , Org . ; VV . Beasley , I . G .: E . T . Clark , D . C . ; T . Douglas

and J . VV . Griffiths , Stwds . ; and James Very , Tyler . Bro . Stean afterwards delivered the addresses . The new VV . M . immediately commenced his year ' s work hy initiating two gentlemen into the mysteries of the Order , and then presented Bro . Funston with a handsome P . M . ' s jewel , and accompanied the presentation with expressions of high approval of the manner in which Bro . Funston had discharged the duties of Master , stating at

the same time that there was this peculiarity in the presentation this year , that Bro . Funston was the first initiate in the lodge . Bro . Funston , in acknowledging the kindness of the brethren , said that he had done what he could to conduct the business of the lodge aright , and he had been well supported by all the brethren , and to these he begged to offer his sincere thanks for their kindness . The lodge was then

closed and the brethren adjourned to banquet . The usual toasts followed . After the toasts of " The Queen and the Craft , " and "The M . W . G . M . the Prince of Wales , " had been disposed of , the VV . M . proposed "The Pro G . M ., the D . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , " coupling with the toast the name of Bro . VV . Clarke , P . G . P ., who had been at every installation meeting of the lodge since the consecration ,

and who on that occasion was one of the officiating officers . Bro . VV . Clarke , in reply , thanked the brethren on behalf of the Earl of Carnarvon and the Karl of Lathom , both of whom took great interest in the Craft . He trusted that the example set by those noblemen and the other Grand Officers would be an incentive to other Masons to do their duty in furthering the good of Freemasonry , which they all had at heart , He looked round with a great amount of pleasure

when he saw he was one of the honorary members of the lodge . He was a partaker in its consecration , and he hoped as long as he had health and strength he would be present to receive the same kind greetings as he had that evening . He was only too happy to do his best at any time for Freemasonry , and also for that lodge , and he hoped to see the St . Leonard's Lodge grow in the same proportion as it had crown .

Bro . tunston , in proposing " The Health of the W . M ., ' said lhat the brethren had now as a president of the St . Leonard's Lodge a brother who was well known , and one who , by his genial conduct , had commended himself to the acceptance of all the members of the lodge . He had known him for 30 years ; he first knew him when they were both young men who had to work , and who had a desire to make their way . They had grown up together , and had

continued friends all throughout ihe time when they had no idea of becoming Masons . From what he had seen of the W . M . he could say that if ever there was a man to assist the poor , or to heal the wounded , it was the VV . M . No man had better conducted himself through life than the W . M ., and no man had more deservedly won his position . It was lo such a brother that he asked them to diink prosperity during his year of office .

The VVorshipful Master , in reply , thanked the brethren for the honour they had dune him ; but asked them to discount to a very large extent what the l . P . M . had said of him . It was true they had known each other a long time ; but it was not true that he ( the VV . M . ) had rendered distinguished services lo Freemasonry . The brethren must b ; : ar in mind that Bro . Funston belonged to ihe legal

profession , and had thus acquired arts of oratory , and perhaps fancied he was addressing a jury . He ( the W . M . ) believed , however , that he was not ill-respected . He war , one of the founders of the lodge , and possibly it was due to him that the lodge was founded . If so , he would only say he was surrounded by a number of very earnest , ardent , and good feeling brethren , who cordially joined in the work , and in the seven years of the lodge ' s existence there had been no

signs of disagreement . He hoped that during his year of office nothing would occur to retard the lodge ' s progress ; and , in keeping the lodge in its present proud position , he believed he would have the support of every brother . The Worshipful Master next gave " Tne Installing Master , " who was one of the oldest Masons in London , having commenced in 1 S 29 . Heconcluded bycongratulating Bro .

Stean on wearing so well , and on having worked so hard and so long in the cause of Masonry . He carried with him a clear conscience , and was still able to conduct the duties of Installing Master . Bro . Stean , in reply , said he had always endeavoured to maintain the principles of the Order . When he was initiated he found the principles were brotherly love , relief , and

truth , and he had tried through ihe whole of his career to carry out those principles . He had worked hard in the cau > e of Masonic Charity , and he had the happiness of finding that those efforts had been very successful . The VVorshipful Master next proposed " The Health of the Past Masters , " brethren who had rendered essential service to the lodge . With this toast he connected Bros .

Stean , Harr , Barham , Benjamin , Jones , and Clement , all of whom had performed their duties in an admirable manner , and brought the St . Leonard Lodge to a degree of excellence that could scarcely have been expected . Bro . Barham , P . M ., replied , and said that whatever labour the P . Ms , had undergone , it was only a labour of love . The P . Ms , were only too gratified to find the great

success the lodge had attained . One and all , they did their utmost to further the interest of the lodge . He sincerely hoped the time was not far distant when he should find the Past Masters occupying the whole of that side of the table . " The Initiates" was the next toast , and to this toast Bros . Walter Henry Mills and Samuel Batchelor replied .

Bro . Sir VV . Guyer Hunter , M . P ., as one of the brethren who returned thanks for the toast of " The Visitors , " said that whenever he had been in a lodge it had always been to him a source of gratification and pleasure . He had always been received in the kindest manner , and this would always be highly appreciated by him . He joined Masonry believing it was the personification of all that was

benevolent in nature . Its tenets and principles from the earliest ages until now had been benevolence and goodwill to all men . It had been stated by some who did not know what the tenets and privileges of the Craft were , that it was a secret society , and ought to be suppressed . In the middle ages , and when the Inquisition was in full vigour , despotism could not put it down . Why ? because it was based upon

love and Charity , which all good men and true held dear . Therefore , Freemasonry must flourish as long as the World existed . "The Charities , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , " " The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast were subsequently given and honoured . The following visitors were present during the evening : Bros . John Ives , P . M . 1472 ; H . Massey , P . M . 619 and

closed and the brethren adjourned to banquet .

M . 619 and
