Chaplain for Surrey ) to the newly-installed Master , and hopes expressed that his year of office would be a pleasant and successful one . Before the lodge closed Bro . Bowyer , P . M ., read an interesting communication from Bro . Saunders , of Cape Town , Provincial Grand Superintendent , under the Scottish Constitution , who , on his visit

to England some three years since , was a frequent and welcome visitor at most _ of the lodges in Southampton , showing the wide-spread influence and power of Masonry in the case of a Clausentum brother who had recently gone to South Africa . At the installation banquet the chair was filled by Bro . Bell , who health was cordially drank , upon the proposition of the D . Prov . Grand Master ; and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were also honoured .

YORK . —Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge fell due on the gth ult . ( Lord Mayor ' s Day ) , but as many of the members were interested in municipal affairs , and could not have been Present on that day , a dispensation was obtained from the rovincial Grand Master to hold the meeting on Wednesday , the nth ult ., on which day there was a large

assemblage of members and visitors at the Masonic Hall , St . Saviourgate . Soon after three p . m . the lodge was opened bv Bro . Sir Fredk . Milner , Bart ., W . M ., Senior Prov . G . M . elect , for installation , and the ceremony was proceeded with , Bro . Cumberland giving the charges to the officers on investment , and the final address to the brethren .

J . Hall , Tyler . After the ceremonies a number of presentations took place . Bro . Cumberland presented a series of certificates of service as Steward at the Charity Festivals . These , with those earned by other members of the lodge , it is intended to frame and hang round the walls of the dining room . Bro . J . T . Seller , P . M ., presented a valuable

scries of framed Masonic engravings . Bros . J . Blenkin , P . M ., W . Storey , and Bro . Whytehead ( as representing the ancient Ebor Preceptory of Knights Templar ) presented the Master ' s and two Warden's chairs . These are most beautiful pieces of furniture , elaborately carved in solid oak , the measurement being—height at back 7 ft ., width 3 ft . 3 in . The backs , which are surmounted by two

beautifully carved dragons in repose , are supported by the columns of the various Orders , and in the centre of the panel are the arms of the lod ^ e beautifully carved in bold relief , showing the four ancient gates of the city , the city arms , with the five lions rampant , and supporters of Roman soldiers on cither side , the name and number of the lodge being carved on the ribbons . The front supports are

figures representing lion ' s heads , mane , and claws , beautifully carved , The capitals and base of the columns are carved in dark brown oak , which , besides adding relief , is a great improvement . The whole are highly polished in Ihe natural colour , and richly upholstered in crimson velvet . Next came the presentation of the pedestals by Bros .

Sir F . Milner , P . M ., J . S . Cumberland , P . M ., and W . B . Dyson . These also are splendidly carved in solid oak , representing the three Orders , the dimensions being—height , 3 ft- 4 in ., by 2 ft . 6 in . square . The entablature of the Pedestal of the W . M . is supported by four columns of the Ionic Order , the capitals and bases being in brown oak ; that of Ihe Senior Warden is supported by four columns of the Doric Order , and the Junior Warden ' s by four of the Corinthian Order , the whole being beautifully oolished

and mounted with the silver emblems of the three offices . Handsome oak chairs , upholstered in crimson velvet , are also being made for the Deacons and Inner Guard . When complete this will form one of the most handsome collections of Masonic furniture in the country , and reflects the greatest credit on Bro . W . Stephenson , of Micklegate , York , whose designs and workmanship have given such great satisfaction to the members of his lodge .

Bro . T . B . Whytehead was elected to represent the lodge on the Provincial Charities' Committee , and the lodge was closed with * ' Hearty good wishes . " An adjournment was then made to Harker ' s York Hotel , where Bro . P . Matthews had provided a capital banquet , at which Bro . Alderman Terry , Lord Mayor of York for the second time , was an honoured guest . The Eboracum Lodge is famed for its annual toast lists , which ever since its birth

have been specially designed by Bro . Whytehead . This time the front page bore a view of the city of York a couple of centuries ago , with appropriate Masonic quotations , and the arms of the lodge on the back . The toasts were as follows : " The Queen and the Craft , " " The Prince of Wales , Grand Master , and the Grand Lodge of England ; " " The Earl of Zetland , Prov . Grand Master , and the Prov . The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last meeting were reau and confirmed . The lodge was opened in the Second ,

and resumed to the frirst Degree . The ceremony cf initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Side being the candidate . ' 1 he charge was delivered . The lodge being called off and on , the explanation of the lirst tracing board was given . The work of the VV . M . deserved the highest commendation for correctness and expression . Time did not permit the working of the sections , as arranged . Bro . Hill proposed , and Bro . Pigeon seconded , that Bro . G . Lavington be the W . M . for the ensuing week . The work will be Second ceremony , charge , tracing hoard , and 4 th Section of the Second Lecture . The lodge was then closed .

M ,, being most ably assisted by his officers , rehearsed the First , Second , and Third Degrees in a most admirable manner , and 10 the evident satisfaction of the numerous brethren present . The VV . M . likewise gave the traditional history , with full explanations . It is very rare to hear the ceremonies so ably rendered and the officers so perfect in their work . Bro . C . Ca ' stell ( J . W . ) , of the mother lodge , was unanimously elected W . M . for the ensuing week . All Masonic business being ended , the lodge was closed .

The W . M . elect was pleased to appoint his officers in rotation . On rising for the third time , Bro . w . Fowles proposed that a vote of thanks be recorded on the minutes of this lodge of instruction to Bro . A . Gamincll for the very efficient manner in wt ich he had canied out the duties of the chair for the first time—seconded by the J , W ., and carried unanimously . The W . Z . ; and T . C . Walls , P . P . G . Sni . Middx ., P . Z . Comps . Hallows , 141 , and

Greenwood , 1623 , were visitors . The minutes of the previous convocation having been read , lettes of apology for non-attendance through indisposition and other causes were : read from Comps . G . Jas Willing , jun ., presided with his accustomed ability and geniality , and the visitors , as well as several Grand Officers , who looked in after Grand Mark Lodge , complimented the lodge on its progress and advancement .

M ., read an interesting communication from Bro . Saunders , of Cape Town , Provincial Grand Superintendent , under the Scottish Constitution , who , on his visit

to England some three years since , was a frequent and welcome visitor at most _ of the lodges in Southampton , showing the wide-spread influence and power of Masonry in the case of a Clausentum brother who had recently gone to South Africa . At the installation banquet the chair was filled by Bro . Bell , who health was cordially drank , upon the proposition of the D . Prov . Grand Master ; and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were also honoured .

YORK . —Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge fell due on the gth ult . ( Lord Mayor ' s Day ) , but as many of the members were interested in municipal affairs , and could not have been Present on that day , a dispensation was obtained from the rovincial Grand Master to hold the meeting on Wednesday , the nth ult ., on which day there was a large

J . Hall , Tyler . After the ceremonies a number of presentations took place . Bro . Cumberland presented a series of certificates of service as Steward at the Charity Festivals . These , with those earned by other members of the lodge , it is intended to frame and hang round the walls of the dining room . Bro . J . T . Seller , P . M ., presented a valuable

scries of framed Masonic engravings . Bros . J . Blenkin , P . M ., W . Storey , and Bro . Whytehead ( as representing the ancient Ebor Preceptory of Knights Templar ) presented the Master ' s and two Warden's chairs . These are most beautiful pieces of furniture , elaborately carved in solid oak , the measurement being—height at back 7 ft ., width 3 ft . 3 in . The backs , which are surmounted by two

beautifully carved dragons in repose , are supported by the columns of the various Orders , and in the centre of the panel are the arms of the lod ^ e beautifully carved in bold relief , showing the four ancient gates of the city , the city arms , with the five lions rampant , and supporters of Roman soldiers on cither side , the name and number of the lodge being carved on the ribbons . The front supports are

figures representing lion ' s heads , mane , and claws , beautifully carved , The capitals and base of the columns are carved in dark brown oak , which , besides adding relief , is a great improvement . The whole are highly polished in Ihe natural colour , and richly upholstered in crimson velvet . Next came the presentation of the pedestals by Bros .

Sir F . Milner , P . M ., J . S . Cumberland , P . M ., and W . B . Dyson . These also are splendidly carved in solid oak , representing the three Orders , the dimensions being—height , 3 ft- 4 in ., by 2 ft . 6 in . square . The entablature of the Pedestal of the W . M . is supported by four columns of the Ionic Order , the capitals and bases being in brown oak ; that of Ihe Senior Warden is supported by four columns of the Doric Order , and the Junior Warden ' s by four of the Corinthian Order , the whole being beautifully oolished

and mounted with the silver emblems of the three offices . Handsome oak chairs , upholstered in crimson velvet , are also being made for the Deacons and Inner Guard . When complete this will form one of the most handsome collections of Masonic furniture in the country , and reflects the greatest credit on Bro . W . Stephenson , of Micklegate , York , whose designs and workmanship have given such great satisfaction to the members of his lodge .

Bro . T . B . Whytehead was elected to represent the lodge on the Provincial Charities' Committee , and the lodge was closed with * ' Hearty good wishes . " An adjournment was then made to Harker ' s York Hotel , where Bro . P . Matthews had provided a capital banquet , at which Bro . Alderman Terry , Lord Mayor of York for the second time , was an honoured guest . The Eboracum Lodge is famed for its annual toast lists , which ever since its birth

have been specially designed by Bro . Whytehead . This time the front page bore a view of the city of York a couple of centuries ago , with appropriate Masonic quotations , and the arms of the lodge on the back . The lodge being called off and on , the explanation of the lirst tracing board was given . The work of the VV . M . deserved the highest commendation for correctness and expression .
