Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

and wished him a speedy recovery—a sentiment that was heartily re-echoed by the brethren present . "The Pro Grand Master , the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , " was drunk heartily . Bro . Boord , in responding to the toast of " The Deputy G . M ., the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " said he felt , and always

felt , a little ashamed of himself when he had to respond to that toast , because , although during his year of oflice as a Grand Officer he did his duty , since that period he had not attended to Masonry so much as he perhaps might have done . His connection with the Borough of Greenwich Lodge was like an oasis in the desert of his Masonic life , but when he heard the W . M . speak of his services to Grand Lodge

he noticed a smile creeping over the face of his colleague ( Bro . Gooding ) , the meaning of which he should leave Bro . Gooding to explain to them . He could only say that the Grand Officers did their duty in such a manner as met with the approbation , not only of their beloved Grand Master , but the whole , or at least if not everyone , a large majority

of the brethren under the rule of the Grand Lodge of England . He could not sit down without expressing his pleasure in seeing that the Borough of Greenwich Lodge was prospering so . As thc lirst Master of it , it afforded him great gratification , ancl anything he could do at any time to maintain and even increase its prosperity , he sho . uld only be too happy to do it .

Bro . Gooding said they had heard from the genial lips of Bro . Boord something about a smile that he saw creeping over his ( Bro . Gooding's ) face . Well , if he did smile it was at the modesty with which Bro . Boord referred to his services , or neglect of services to Grand Lodge . As for himself , he rose in obedience to the VV . M . to respond to the toast , and in reverting to the words of Bro .

Boord as to the manner in which the Grand Officers of Grand Lodge did their duty , he had no hesitation in saying that not only in Grand Lodge , but wherever their services were required throughout the kingdom they did their duty well , and in accordance with the most cherished traditions of Grand Lodge and its Institutions . As a Past Grand Officer of Grand Lodge he could tell them

that Masonry had at the present time more life and go in it than it had had during the last 20 years . On the preceding Monday their esteemed G . Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , was _ installed W . M . of the Shadwell Clerke Lodge , a fact unique in itself , as Bro . Clerke is the first Grand Secretary , at least during the present century , that has ever during his Secretaryship been installed in the chair

of a lodge , and as a proof of his assertion as to the vitality of Masonry , there were present on the occasion no less than ( 30 Grand Officers , besides a number of Provincial Grand Officers from various provinces in the kingdom . After referring to the rule of Bros . Boord and Roberts over the Borough of Greenwich Lodge , and to the ihelp

afforded by Bro . Bateman , both at its formation and since , he concluded b y assuring them that all this pointed out the life and vitality there was in the Craft , and the desire , not only of the Grand Officers , but of the whole body of Masonry to live up to and carry out its fundamental principles , "Brotherly Love , Relief , and Truth . "

The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " saying he was not going to extol their VV . M . more than he deserved or what was his due , but he had done his work well in the lodge , and to their satisfaction . He felt sure that every brother in the lodge would assist Bro . Carter during his year of office , and on their behalf he wished him long life and prosperity and a good year of office . Bro . Carter said , as the W . M . of that young and

prosperous lodge , he was exceedingly gratilied , and felt sure they were to hear from the lips of the Grand Officers present that theirs was in a sound and prosperous condition , and now that he had arrived at the dignified position of its Master , nothing should be wanting on his part to keep up its present proud position among the lodges of the Metropolis .

The toast of " The Installing Officer " having been drank in bumpers , and Bro . Roberts having brielly returned thanks , Bro . Orchard , in responding for " The Visitors , " regretted that he had been the first named to respond , because otherwise it might have fallen into the hands of a brother who could have put the necessary poetic lire into his speech

so as to make it worthy of the occasion . He regretted not being present at the ceremony of installation , because he and the W . M . were old school friends , and had known and worked together in Masonry for some time past , and he felt sure from what he knew of Bro . Carter that lie would go through his year of office with credit to himself and satis faction to the brethren .

Bro . Whomes having brielly responded , Bros . Williams and Boord also offered their congratulations to the W . M ., the latter brother averring that he never felt the loss of eloquence so much as he did at that moment . He could only thank the W . M . and brethren of thc Borough of Greenwich Lodge for their cordial welcome to himself and every visitor honoured with an invitation .

The Worshipful Master then gave the toast of "The Past Masters . " lie said they were numerically small , but he thought they would agree with him that they were strong in ability . Their lirst Past Master , Bro . Boord , had , as they all knew , conducted the first year of the lodge ' s existencein such an admirable manner that from its first meeting its success was assured , and long would his name be

cherished amongst them for his genial manner and unvarying courtesy to all with whom he came in touch . Then there was Bro . Bateman , who was , and had been always , ready to do the work when the parliamentary duties of Bro . Boord prevented his attendance . Bro . Roberts was one of the oldest Masons in the district , and as such was respected for his great Masonic knowled ge . He asked them

to drink the toast with all heartiness , and give the Past Masters a good lire . Bro . Roberts , in response , said it usuall y devolved upon the LP . M . to respond to the toast of the Past Masters , and he heartily thanked them for their cordial reception of it . The Past Masters w uld never leave the W . M ., but would support him , and do all they could to make his year of oflice a pleasant and prosperous onc .

Bro . Boord said he had had many proofs of the kindness of the brethren to the Past Masters . He was pleased to hear of the progress the lodge was making , and he had no doubt that the prestige of the lodge would be amply maintained by the present VV . M . Bro . Bateman also responded , and , in the course of a lengthy and eloquent speech , gave the VV . M . and brethren excellent advice .

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

The toast of " The Officers" followed , and then the Tyler's toast concluded the proceedings . The singing was excellent , and the contributors to the harmony were Bros . Thomas , G . VV . Sly , E . J . Daws , Mr . H . Mason , and Bro . Jolly , who recited . The whole affair was a great and unequivocal success .

In addition to the ordinary business of the lodge , it was proposed by Bro . Rev . W . A . Tooth , P . P . G . Chaplain , and

seconded by Bro . M . Lelew , I . P . M ., " That the Atlingworth Lodge , No . 1 S 21 , assembled for its regular meeting , having heard with deep sorrow of the serious illness through which the illustrious Prince George of Wales is passing , desires to express its heartfelt sympathy with the M . W . Grand Master , and prays that the Great Architect of the Universe may overrule thisaffiiction to His greater glory and the increased

joy of the Royal Family . " The lodge having been closed , the brethren sat down to their annual banquet , which had been postponed owing to the recent death of the father of the W . M . The VV . M ., Bro . W . C . Newsome , presided , and opened the toast list by proposing " The Oueen and the Craft ' * and " The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the " Prince of Wales . "

Bro . Billinghurst , P . M ., gave "The Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " to which the Prov . Grand Secretary responded . The VVorshipful Masterthen gave "The R . W . Provincial Grand Master , H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught . " Bro . A . Loader , J . W ., submitted "The Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge , Present and Past , " which was

acknowledged by Bros . C Nye , VV . Gill , and J . Terry . The LP . M ., Bro . Lelew , then said he had an important toast to propose , that of " The Worshipful Master . " Bro . Newsome , he remarked , possessed distinctions which had not characterised other W . M . ' s of the lodge , he was the youngest W . M . who had occupied the chair , and he was also a " Lewis . " He had served most of the offices

in the lodge , and had , at length , been unanimously elected W . M . He was sure all the brethren congratulated him upon his proud position , and upon the large gathering that had assembled to do him honour . Alluding to the lamentable circumstances which had necessitated the postponement of the banquet , hc wished the W . M . as happy a year of office as that through which he himself had

passed . The Worshipful Master , on rising to respond , was enthusiastically applauded . He said the brethren would be pleased to hear that he had received the following telegram from H . R . H . the Prince of Wales : " To the VV . M . Atlingworth Lodge , Royal Pavilion , Brighton ; the Prince of Wales desires to express his warm thanks to the brethren for their kind and fraternal sympathy . " Responding to

the toast he said he hardly knew how to thank the brethren for the hearty reception they had given him . He felt deeply grateful to them and assured them he would carry out his duties to the best of his ability . He had good Past Masters to fall back upon , and knew he would have their hearty support . Referring to the postponement of the banquet , he said he felt very grateful to all the brethren for

their kind expressions of sympathy . Whatever his shortcomings , he would do his best to keep thc lodge together , and felt much encouraged by their kindness to him . Bro . G . S . Godfree proposed " The Worshipful Masters of the Lodges in the Province , " to which * liro . Bradford responded . Bro . B . Burfield gave " The Visitors , " which Bros . Catei

and Spooner acknowledged . Bros . Godfree and Lelew replied to the toast of " The Past Masters of the Lodge . " Bros . Embling , Loader , and Mennich responded for "Thc Officers of the Lodge . " The Tyler ' s toast completed the list .

During the evening a pleasing selection of music was rendered by Miss Maud Bond , Miss Susetta Fenn , Bro . Sinclair Dunn , and Bro . J . Chapman , Bro . H . S . Gates , P . P . G . O , carrying out the duties of accompanist . Letters of apology for non-attendance were received from H . R . H . the Duke of Connaught , Prov . G . M ., and Right Hon . Sir VV . T . Marriott , D . "Hearty good wishes" were expressed from the numerous visitors

present , and the lodge was closed by the W . M . A banquet was s-ubsequently held , served in an admirable manner by Bro . W . Oilier . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were proposed and responded to . Bro . G . S . Leresche , P . P . G . Reg ., in proposing " The Health of the Worshipful Master , " said as they seemed to

have such a large amount of musical talent present he would not detain the brethren long in saying what he had to say of Bro . VV . H . Southern . It gave him great pleasure to see him in that position , and he was sure he was well deserving of the high honour the brethren had conferred upon him . He was quite sure the lodge would be benefited by his presidency , as he had always been a most ardent worker . He wished him a most successful and happy

year . In reply , Bro . VV . H . Southern said hc thanked Bro . Leresche for the kind expressions he had made , and also the brethren for the generous manner in which they had received the toast . He sincerely appreciated that expression of the brethren's feelings , though he had some conscientious doubts whether he deserved the good wishes of Bro . Leresche . However , backed up by such a strong array

of Past Masters , he would promise them that by every means in his power he would uphold the dignity of the lodge , while under his direction it would be his endeavour to maintain the high reputation of the St . Thomas's Lodge . Bro . J . J . Meakin next proposed " The Health of the I . P . M . and Installing Master , " and said the Past Masters knew the numerous difficulties that surrounded a brother

when he took the chair of a lodge for the first time . But Bro . Lamb had come through the ordeal with honour and reputation ; indeed , he was pleased to see and hear Bro . Lamb install his successor . For many years it had fallen to his ( the speaker's ) lot to install , but he was happy to think there was now some one to take that place , for he had performed that ceremony in a way which was most

creditable to himself and the lodge , and to recognise the efforts he had made for the interests of the lodge , the brethren had deputed him to present Bro . Lamb with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel as a mark of their esteem and good feeling , and he now pinned it on his breast with the expression of the hope that he would wear it in health and strength for many years , and that it would remind him

of many pleasant evenings he had had with the brethren . Bro . Lamb thanked the brethren for receiving the toast in such a very hearty manner , and also for the very handsome Past Master ' s jewel , which he should greatly prize . But at the same time he prized the good feelings of the brethren far more than the intrinsic value of the beautiful jewel . He should always wear it with pleasure , and feel at the same

time he had the goodfellowship of every member of St . Thomas's Lodge . Bro . J . W . Millward proposed "The Health of the Visitors " in a most fluent manner . Bro . Battye , VV . M . 12143 , responded . The musical ceremony was charmingly rendered by Bros .

Mark Stafford , P . M . ; Wm . Dumville , P . M . ; and Wm . Booth , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C , who also added to the enjoyment of the evening by rendering trios and songs . Bro . Smith , P . M ., sang " Here ' s to his health , " the accompanist being Miss Ada Dumville , who displays great ability , and is a charming and brilliant instrumentalist .

Bateman also responded , and , in the course of a lengthy and eloquent speech , gave the VV . M . and brethren excellent advice .

acknowledged by Bros .

M . Referring to the postponement of the banquet , he said he felt very grateful to all the brethren for

their kind expressions of sympathy . Whatever his shortcomings , he would do his best to keep thc lodge together , and felt much encouraged by their kindness to him . Bro . G . S .

Bro . Smith , P .
