After the usual routine preliminaries , then followed the event of the evening , namely , the presentation of a complimentary jewel to Bro . J . J . W . Knowles , Secretary 1007 , in accordance with the following resolution of September 11 , proposed by Bro . E . Holmes , S . W . 279 , and seconded by

Bro . W . H . Swmgler , S . W . 20 S 1 , and carried unanimously — " That , in consideration of the satisfactory condition of the lodge , of the recent changes in its official arrangements , and of the valuable services rendered to it by Bro . J . J . W . Knowles , Secretary , ex-Treasurer , and ex-Steward , during his past term of office , the usual jewel customarily voted at the end of three years' official services be now ( at the end

of two years ) voted to Bro . J . J . W . Knowles , with the best thanks of the lodge . " This pleasing duty was , by kind permission of the acting W . M ., and by his own particular desire , performed by Bro . H . Howe , acting I . P . M ., vvhoaccompanied the act with a few graceful , well-chosen , and appropriate words , which received the plaudits of the assembled brethren . The recipient expressed his high sense of the

special honour thus conferred upon him , his steadfast loyalty tothe Order and its principles , and his continued devotion to the best interests of the Union Lodgeof Instructioninparticular . The jewel itself , a replica of one presented on a former occasion to Bro . J . B . Waring , P . M . 523 , P . P . G . D . C , was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning . It consists of an oval ensincture of beaten silver , embossed on its face with the

words "Union Lodge of Instruction , and enclosing within its inner margin the wrought emblems of M . M ., Treas ., Sec , and Stwd . respectively . To the face of the ribbon is affixed a shield with suitable inscription , and the " bar " bears a scroll on which appear the numbers of the five Leicester lodges under who auspices the Union Lodge is held . The presentation being over , the Acting W . M .

proceeded to work the Second Degree , which he did in a most impressive manner . The discussion of questions relating to Masonic usages , customs , and symbolism followed , in the course of which Bro . F . W . Billson , LL . B ., favoured the lodge with an exposition on the regular steps , which by its sublimity invited the attention and evoked loud applause from all present , though many could not agree with the

learned brother s view of the matter . The lodge was then closed . At the banquet " Bro . Knowles ' s Health " was proposed by the Acting W . M . in very laudatory terms . It was received with enthusiasm and drunk with musical and full Masonic honours . Bro . Knowles suitably acknowledged the toast , and in return proposed " The Continued Prosperity of the Union

Lodge of Instruction . It only remains to add that the Union Lodge of Instruction at the present time has 17 S names on its list of members , that its meetings are always largely attended , that its influence is felt and acknowledged , not only locally , but throughout the province , and that financially , as well as in other regard , it is ] sound and in thorough going working order .

HORNSEY CHAPTER ( No . 890 ) . —A meeting was held on the 4 th inst . at the Prince of Wales Hotel , corner of Eastbourne-terrace and Bishop ' s-road , Paddington , W ., when there were present Comps . The chapter was opened , and the minutes of the last convocation were read and confirmed . The ceremony of exaltation was rehearsed , Comp . Turner being candidate . Comp . Dehane was re-elected S . E ., and Comp . J . Davies , Treas ., and Comps . Dehane , Dean , and Chalfont the Committee of Management for the ensuing 12 months . The M . E . PRESENTATION TO BRO . AUSTIN ROBERTS .

For some time past the brethren of the Lodges of Probity , No . 61 , and St . James , No . 448 , have been desirous of presenting to Bro . Austin Roberts , P . M ., P . P . A . G . D . C . West Yorkshire , some token to express their appreciation of his valuable services and of the esteem in which he is held by the brethren of the two

lodges , who own and occupy the commodious premises in St . John ' s-place known as the Freemasons' Hall . Bro . Roberts has been intimately associated with the Hall Management Committee since its formation nearly 25 years ago , he having joined the Lodge of St . James in 1866 .

On Thursday , the 3 rd inst ., Bro . Roberts was entertained at a banquet held in the large dining room of the Hall , over 50 brethren being present . The chair was occupied by Bro . Walter Wright , W . M . 61 , supported b y Bro . Walter Hanson , W . M . 448 , and several others .

After the toast of " The Oueen , " Bro . C . T . RHODES , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., gave " H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , K . G ., M . W . Grand Master . " Bro . J . T . Simpson , P . M ., gave "The Right Worshipful P . G . M . of West Yorks , and the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past . "

Bro . F . WALKER , P . M ., Prov . G . R ., responded , and mentioned that he had intimately known Bro . Roberts for 35 years , and spoke of his irreproachable character . Bro . W . Wright then presented to Bro . Roberts his portrait , which is a full-size oil painting , in Provincial clothing , and also a " replica . " ( The portrait is the

work of Miss Wood , of Manchester , who has painted several local celebrities , and is a remarkably true and p leasing likeness of Bro . Roberts . ) Bro . WALTER HANSON immediately afterwards presented to Bro . Roberts a valuable gold watch , and also a pretty substantial silver tea and coffee service

and tray for Mrs . Roberts . Bro . ROBERTS most feelingly responded , and expressed his desire that the portrait should be hung in the lodge room . Bro . SCRATCHERD , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., then proposed " The Health of the Guest of the evening , Bro . Roberts , "

and said no words could fully express the brotherly and fraternal feeling that all the brethren had towards Bro . Roberts , and all wished him many years to enjoy the g ilts presented , and to continue his connection with the lodge . Bro . THOS . WHITAKER , J . P ., P . M ., P . P . G . D . C ,

ANNUAL SUPPER OF THE DUKE OF ALBANY LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1963 . The annual supper of the above was held on Wednesday , the 2 nd inst ., at the Masons' Arms Hotel , Battersea Park Road , S . W . A large number of the Craft assembled on the occasion to honour the popular Preceptor Bro . C . Donaldson , 19 6 3 who presided ,

supported by the Deputy Preceptor , Bro . I'eatherstonhaugh , in the vice-chair . There were also present Bros . Merry , J . Bird , Harvey , Windsor , Lucas , Phillips , Burroughs , Hinton , Van-Gelder , Shoesmith , Gonn , Toley , Winter , Smith , Vickery , Bate , Ingram , Randall , Woodford , Humphries , Newman , Lyell , Steel , Street , Kirby , Squires , and Wilks , Secretary .

After a most . sumptuous repast provided by the host , Bro . Duffield , 1963 , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . The CiiAiRMANproposed , in effective terms , "Success

to the Duke of Albany I . odge of Instruction , " paying a high compliment to Bro . Featherstonhatigh for his efficient assistance as Deputy Preceptor , and to Bro . Wilks for his devotion to the Secretarial duties ancl regular attendance at lodge .

The CHAIRMAN next gave " The Visitors , " whom they were always glad to receive at their meetings . Bros . INGRAM , GONN , LYELL , and VAN-GELDER responded to the toast . The VICE-CHAIRMAN then proposed "The Health of the Chairman , Bro . C Donaldson , the Preceptor , " and

said it vvas a most pleasing duty for him to be able to propose that toast , for the hi gh estimation they had of Bro . C . Donaldson , and he knew every brother would respond to it vvith acclamation . In Bro . Donaldson they had a Preceptor of no mean Masonic knowledge . He could not speak too highly of him ; he vvas a most

indefatigable Mason , always ready to help a brother in the lodge or out of it . The toast was received with enthusiasm . Bro . DONALDSON , in acknowledging the toast , thanked the brethren for drinking his health . The CHAIRMAN then submitted the toast of " The Officers of the Duke of Albany Lodge of Instruction ,

the Deputy Preceptor ( Bro . Featherstonhaugh ) , and Secretary ( Bro . Wilks ) , " and said they were singularl y fortunate in possessing officers like they had in their Deputy Preceptor , for he felt sure that before long he would have to take a back seat on account of the able manner in which he performed the duties of his office .

Bro . FEATHERSTONHAUGH , 1963 , replied , heartily thanking the brethren for having drank his health . The Secretary , Bro . WII . KS , 202 , in reply , thanked the brethren for their hearty approbation , and said he scarcely knew how to reply to the toast , and for the kind words which the Chairman had submitted to the

brethren , but he did thank the brethren for the support they had given him . As the festive board was chiefly for enjoyment , he vvould not trouble them with a lengthy speech . During the toasts the brethren enjoyed several songs

and recitations by Bros . Windsor , Lyell , Gonn , Squires , Wilks , Van-Gelder , Newman , and the Chairman . Bro . Kirby officiated at the piano . The entertainment vvas brought to a close about midnight with a hearty vote of thanks to Bro . Duffield , 1963 , for his excellent catering .

M . then addressed the lodge as follows : Brethren , it is usual for a Master immediately after his installation to address a few words to his lodge , and I wish to

say that in electing me as the Master of Pollock Lodge , you have conferred on me the highest honour you had in your power to bestow , and for that honour I tender you my sincere thanks . Attached to this honour there is a considerable amount of responsibility and work , which , with your kind co-operation , 1 hope successfully to perform . In a Masonic lodge we are constantly reminded of the

necessity of work , and labour in whatever form , if rightly understood , is no curse , but the greatest blessing we possess . Freemasons are supposed to be workers , and should endeavour to dignify labour , for we are reminded here of our duty in this respect by properly employing our time first for our own use then for the benefit of those directly depending on us for support , and , lastly , when demanded for the

assistance of those brethren who have been less fortunate tnan ourselves . Freemasonry , however , is not merely a chaiitable institution , it has to do with the higher life of man , and how he should perform his work here . A lodge at work is said to be at labour , and we explain the working tool-, of the various Degrees as if the Freemason was an Operative Mason ; but at the same time we apply their use

in a moral sense . 1 he specific duties of the office-bearers have already been eloquently and beautifully set forth by our R . VV . Brother , the Provincial Grand Master of Stirlingshire , when he invested us with the badges which we now wear , but there are otner and wider responsibilities devolving upon us all as brethren . The " Antient Charges "

required that no Master or Fellow should absent himself from his lodge , and this sentence heads many of the summonses issued by our brethren in the south . But not only is good attendance necessary : we should remember besides that we have promised to further the interests of the loege by every means in our power , and we should not be satished by a merely passive and occasional attendance , but take an
