was unanimously elected , the result being received with cheers . Bro . Jolly feelingly returned thanks . Bro . Dr . VV . Vance , P . valuable services to the lodge during his year of office , and he returned thanks . Three Auditors were then appointed , and the lodge was closed . The brethren then sat down to dinner , and afterwards drank the usual loyal and lodge toasts with much harmony and brotherly love . The installation of Bro . Jolly takes place on the first Tuesday in March .

YORK . —Eboracum Lodge ( No . 1611 ) . —A very full meeting of this lodge was held on Monday evening at the Freemasons'Hall , St . Saviour-gate . In the absence of the W . M ., through illness , the chair was taken by Bro . T . B . Whytehead , P . M ., and there were also present Bros . Sir F . Milner , Bart ., I . P . M . ; C . G . Padel , P . M . ; J . T . M ., presented to the lodge library the fifth volume of Gould ' s " History of Freemasonry , " and Bro . Whytehead also presented six other Masonic works , and for these votes of thanks were accorded .

The name of a candidate was proposed and seconded , and the lodge was closed . A smoking concert was afterwards held in the smoke room , when songs and recitations were given by Bros . Mennell , Thackray , Sir F . Milner , T . B . Whytehead , and others , and a thoroughly friendly evening was enjoyed by the members and their numerous visitors .

MANCHESTER . —Avon Lodge ( No . 1633 ) . — The installation of Bro . Wm . Craven took place , and the St . John's . Festival celebrated , at the Denmark Hotel , Greenheys , on Wednesday , the 27 th ult . The name Avon naturally suggests some connection ivith the immortal Bard , and we opine that , if not already the case , the lodge will sooner or later be looked upon as the Dramatic Lodge

of Manchester , as in our experience several well-known members of the profession have been initiated therein , amongst whom were Bros . J . C . Emerson ( Curtis ) , Joseph Bracewell , Tom Squire ( one of the two Macs ) , S . H . Austin Robson ( scenic artist ) , E . J . G . Taylor , and others , and quite recently Bro . George Davies , manager of "In the Ranks" Company , who , by the way , journeyed from "the

little village the same day to take his Second Degree , and returned the same night , being due at the Adelphi 11 o ' clock a . m . Thursday morning . Whatever may be the case in the outer world respecting the society of our professional brethren , it is an indisputable fact that their presence in the lodge , and particularly at the social board , gives an additional charm and zest to the proceedings , and when also the fact is recognised that the ritual is ably and distinctly

expounded in this lodge by such brethren as Bros ., W . Bostock , P . M ., and A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., nothing but the greatest satisfaction can be felt by all those who visit it . On this particular occasion there were fewer members of the profession present than it has been our custom to see ; at the same time , the number of visitors was quite up to the average , and the banquet room , when the brethren had seated themselves at the table , presented a very brilliant

appearance . The lodge having been opened , there were present Bros . A . T . Forrest , VV . M . ; Wm . Craven , S . VV . ; W . Lyon , J . W . ; A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., Treas . j E . G . Simpson , Sec . j W . T . Allitt , S . D . j James Boylan , J . D . j Chas . Swinn , I . G . ; Wm . Bostock , P . M ., D . C . j Wm . Byway , I . P . M . ; Thos . Cavanah , P . M . ; G . J . D ., 152 ; Joseph Hill , P . M . 1403 and 204 ; H . Ison , P . M . 1140 ; and R , P . Lisenden , W . M . 317 . After the minutes of the last regular meeting had been read and confirmed , Bro . George Davies was passed to the Second Degree by the W . M ., Bro . A . T . Forrest . The installation ceremony was next proceeded with , and , according to previous arrangement , our well-known Bro . Wm . Bostock , P . M ., occupied his old post as Installing Master ,

and , with his customary care and ability , assisted by the P . M . 's , installed Bro . Wm . Craven into the chair of K . S ., after which the new W . M . was proclaimed to , and saluted by , the M . M . ' s on their re-entrance to the lodge . The VV . M . next appointed his officers , and they were invested by Bro . A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., as follows : Bros . E . G . Simpson , S . VV . ; VV . T . Allitt , J . W . ; A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., Treas . ; VV . Brown , P . M ., Sec . j J . Boylan , S . D . ;

C . Swinn , J . D . ; W . Bostock , P . M ., D . C ; VV . T . Farrington , I . G . ; J . Driver and Jaeggi , Stwds . ; and Geo . Burrows , Tyler . The address to the W . M . was delivered by Bro . T . Cavanah , P . M ., to the Wardens by Bro . G . Macfarlane , P . M ., and to the brethren by Bro . VV . Bostock , P . M ., who declared the ceremony over . Prior to the lodge closing , the sum of five guineas was voted to the East Lancashire Systematic Institution , and ,

there being no further business , " Hearty good wishes " were expressed by the numerous visitors , and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony . The brethren afterwards celebrated the Festival of St John , and here we pause to remark that since the accession of Mr . Alexander Fulton ( we should like to have written Bro . Fulton ) , the hotel has undergone a complete transformation . Every room is beautifully furnished , and the greatest pains are taken by the worthy host and his

charitable sister to ensure comfort and enjoyment to their customers . There are many who can recall the dissatisfaction often expressed at the bad , not to say the slovenly , catering of the former management , but now , as Mr . Fulton would say , " ' nous avous change tout cela , ' " and I , and those about me , do our best to make every one comfortable . " When the banquet was over , the Worshipful Master proposed the preliminary loyal toasts , which were duly honoured .

Bro . Thomas Cavanah , P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the VV . M ., " said it would be both invidious and superfluous for him to make a long speech in favour of Bro . Craven . He ( Bro . Cavanah ) thought a great deal of their VV . M ., who was at once lighthearted and kindhearted , and had always met them in that truly Masonic spirit that should at all times characterise Masons . In conclusion , Bro . Cavanah said he felt sure the lodge would never

regret electing Bro . Craven to the chair , and that he would leave it as pure and unsullied as he had found it . The toast was received with every manifestation of pleasure by the brethren , after which Bro . Smith sang " Here ' s to his Health . " The Worshipful Master , in reply , said he was much obliged to Bro . Cavanah for his kind remarks , which , however , he ( the W . M . ) did not consider he was worthy

of . He would simply content himself with the idea that the brethren must have been satisfied with his working and his conduct , or they would never have elected him to the honorable and proud position he now occupied , as no unworthy brother ought to be placed in that position . He assured them he had Freemasonry at heart , and although every VV . M . could not be the brightest of lights , still he hoped the brethren would look upon his shortcomings with

a charitable and Masonic spirit ; and he trusted he should fulfil his duties creditably to the lodge and satisfactorily to himself . Bro . Macfarlane , P . M ., proposed "The Visiting Brethren , " and said he was very pleased to see so many old and welcome faces amongst them that day , to whom they extended the right hand of fellowship , and gave them as hearty a welcome as it was possible to give .

Bros . A . H . Jefferis , VV . M . 11 G 1 , and R . R . Lisenden , 317 , responded . The Worshipful Master , in proposing " The Health of Bro . A . T . Forrest , I . P . M ., " remarked that he felt very pleased in so doing , inasmuch as the I . P . M . and himself had been very happy together , and had worked harmoniously during the past year . Bro . Forrest ' s working had been most efficient , and few could excel the manner in which

he had performed the various duties that had devolved upon him . It was these reasons which created the extreme pleasure which he ( the W . M . ) felt in proposing the health of their I . P . M ., and he also felt additional pleasure in presenting him , on behalf of the members , with a very handsome P . M . ' s gold jewel , trusting the G . A . O . T . U . would long spare him to wear it amongst them . The health of Bro . Forrest was heartily drank , after

which he returned thanks for the jewel in suitable terms . Bro . Simpson , S . W ., proposed "The Health of the Past Masters , " and coupled with it the name of Bro . A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., who had been Treasurer to the lodge for three years , and was now entering the fourth year of office . Bro . Wm . Bostock , P . M ., here stepped forward , and , after dilating upon the many excellent qualities of Bro .

Whittaker , his ability in performing the various ceremonies , the care and correctness with which he had fulfilled the duties of his office of Treasurer , said that a few of the members , to mark their appreciation of his conduct and zeal for the welfare of the lodge , had subscribed towards purchasing a jewel , which he ( Bro . Bostock ) had the greatest possible pleasure m presenting him with , trusting

he might live many years to wear it amongst them . The jewel , which was most elegant in design , having a pair of keys crossed suspended from a square and problem , was specially manufactured by Bro . George Kenning , 47 , Bridge-street , Manchester , who also supplied the P . M . ' s jewel presented to Bro . Forrest . Bro . Whittaker , who was quite overcome by this unexpected token of the brethren ' s esteem , replied in suitable

terms . Several other toasts were proposed , and songs were sung by Bros . Frank Hollins , J . D . Smith , S , Jupp , Owles , and others . ¦¦

HAMPTON WICK . —Wolsey Lodge ( No . 165 G ) . —This lodge met at the Rose and Crown Hotel on the 8 th inst . Among those present were Bros . Piller , VV . M . ; Walls , S . W . ; Chandler , J . W . ; the Rev . C . D'Crespigny , P . P . G . Chap ., 'Treasurer ; Ockenden , P . P . G . D ., Secretary ; Jobbins , S . D . ; H . T . Smith , Sapsworth , Gerhold , Dare , Peat , J , Smith , Masters , Bonell , and others .

Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

'The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the bye-laws were read , and the Audit Committee appointed to meet on thc 5 th prox . 'The election of VV . M ., Treasurer , and Tyler resulted in favour of Bros . Chandler , D'Crespigny , and Gilbert , respectively . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to refreshment . A few toasts followed .

LIVERPOOL . —Antient Briton Lodge ( No , l 67 o ) . —At the meeting , on Tuesday evening , the 26 th ult ., a presentation was made by the VV . M ., Bro . Walker , on behalf of the members , to Bro . Bottomley , P . M ., Treas ., who has acted for many years as Preceptor at the lodge rehearsals . After the regular business , the VV . M ., in proposing " Thc

Health of Bro . Bottomley , " referred to the valuable services rendered to the officers by the assistance of Bro . Bottomley for several years . He had much pleasure in asking Mrs . Bottomley's acceptance of a silver tea and coffee service , and to request Bro . Bottomley to carry them to Mrs . Bottomley , with the best wishes of the subscribers , as a token of their esteem and affection for her husband .

Bro . Bottomley suitably responded . The articles comprising the presentation were a handsome and richly chased silver teapot , collee pot , cream jug , and sugar basin . The teapot bore the following inscription : — "Presented to Mrs . J . R . Bottomley , in recognition of the valuable assistance rendered by her husband at the Committee and rehearsal meetings of the Antient Briton Lodge , No . 1675 . January , 1 SS 6 . "

SHANKLIN—Chine Lodge ( No . 18 S 4 ) . —The annual installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , on Thursday , the 2 SU 1 ult . It was one of the largest gatherings ever seen at an installation in the island . Bro . F . Newman , P . M ., the Installing Master , giving it his opinion that there were more Past Masters present when Bro . Alfred Greenham was installed than he

After the transaction of formal business , the VV . M . surrendered the chair to Bro . Francis Newman , who , after passing a member of the lodge to the Second Degree ,

proceeded to install Bro . Greenham as the W . M ., carrying out the ceremony in his most impressive style . In investing his officers , the W . The inscription was : "Presented with the hearty good wishes of the Chine Lodge of Freemasons to Bro . Francis Newman , P . M ., P . P . G . S . W ., in recognition of his services , and as a token ot fraternal regard and esteem . " Brethren , I have now to perform a duty at your unanimous request

which fills me with pleasure , and which I consider is thc greatest honour that has fallen to my lot in life . Even the contemplation of it has been for some time a source of pardonable pride , which all of you have shared with me . The future history of Chine Lodge will ever be associated with the name of Bro . Francis Newman , for before thc foundations were laid he had spent many an hour in

designing the building of which ive are all so justly proud , and which will ever be a memento of his Masonic generosity . Let mediiect your attention to the early days of Chine Lodge when it was struggling for existence , for those are the days to my mind which brought out the noblest qualities of Bro . Newman's noble heart . When the aid on which the founders of Chine Lodgc

relied was withdrawn from them , from circumstances beyond their control , Bro . Newman generously stepped into the breach and has since stood faithfully by Chine Lodge to this day . Brethren , that was a time when the future of this lodge looked gloomy , and required a sacrifice of time and of labour that few other Masons in the Isle of Wight , I venture to assert , would so ungrudgingly have given to us . To initiate , to pass , and to raise 12 candidates into Masonry required a lodge of emergency every two

M ., Treas . j E . G . M ., occupied his old post as Installing Master ,

and , with his customary care and ability , assisted by the P . M . 's , installed Bro . Wm . Craven into the chair of K . S ., after which the new W . M . was proclaimed to , and saluted by , the M . M . ' s on their re-entrance to the lodge . The VV . M . next appointed his officers , and they were invested by Bro . A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., as follows : Bros . E . G . Simpson , S . VV . ; VV . T . Allitt , J . W . ; A . B . Whittaker , P . M ., Treas . ; VV . Brown , P . M ., Sec . j J . Boylan , S . D . ;

C . Swinn , J . D .

D . ; H . T .

M ., in a most able manner , gave them the address detailing the whole of their duties . The following are the officers for the ensuing year : Bros . Alfred Greenham , VV . M . ; John Bailey , I .
