they would never regret having placed him in that position , and he svould do everything he could to conduce to the svelfare and happiness of the lodge , and asked them to bear svith him in his shortcomings . He had rendered the ceremonies to the best of his ability , although not so svell as he should have liked . svished the brethren follosving him in office svould follosv his example in attending the lodge of instruction . The svhole of his Masonry bad been learned from brethren kind enough to attend and expound their knosvledge for the benefit of others . The Secretary of the lodge , Bro . Lorkin , P . M ., had been very kind in conjunction svith other Past Alasters . He svas very pleased indeed to think thebrethren
had thought fit to place him in his present position , and only hoped he should emulate the excellent example set by his predecessors . If he succeeded in doing this he had no doubt but that he should carry out his duties to their satisfaction and svith some degree of credit to himself . "The Initiates" svas heartily given , after svhich theW . M . proposed "The Installing Master and Past Masters , "
and said the members knesv svhat Bro . Rich , I . P . M ., the Installing Alaster , had done during his year , and they had seen him perform the installation ceremony in a very creditable manner . The Past Alasters of the lodge set a grand example to the brethren . Bro . Lee , P . M ., svas the father of the lodge , and they svere all proud to osvn it , for his services to the Iodge spoke for themselves . He ( the
W . AL ) had a particular regard for Bro . Brand , P . AL , Treas ., as he initiated him , and that Past Master no doubt felt as pleased that he ( the W . M . ) had reached the chair as he did himself . Bro . Lorkin , P . AL , Sec , had rendered services to the lodge , and gave up his time to instruct them in the lodge of instruction . Bro . J . H . Rich , P . M ., expressed the pride he felt at
being called upon to respond as the Installing Alaster , for he had tried to the best of his ability to perform the installation ceremony creditably , and if he had done it to their satisfaction he svas gratified . Bro . W . H . Lee , P . M ., P . P . G . D . Aliddx ., also responded , and said he had alsvays done so in some form from time to time during the past seventeen years in this lodge . It
svas his very pleasing duty to congratulate the lodge on its continued prosperity . The prosperity of a lodge svas not to be gauged by the condition of its funds or its numerical strength , but by the unity prevailing amongst its members , and judging the prosperity of the Duke of Connaught Lodge by that standard , it svas indeed nourishing . Bro . Geo . R . Langley , P . M . 1 S 3 , W . M . 23 S 1 , responded
for "The Visitors , " and having returned thanks , said that personally it had been a very great pleasure to attend this lodge from time to time as a visitor . It svas his privilege svhen an Entered Apprentice to meet Bros . Lorkin , Dignam , and others of this lodge , and as he moved further on he met Bro . Lee , P . AL , and the amount of knosvledge , brotherly love , and kindly feeling he had received had
induced him to accept svith pleasure the invitation to be present that evening . He trusted that this lodge svould go on in the lines of prosperity into svhich it had been guided , and he svished the W . M . a prosperous year of office . Bros . Stevenson , Harris , Holdgate , P . AL , and Bunker , P . AL , also replied . "The Officers" svas given and duly responded to before
the T y ler's toast closed a most successful and pleasant gathering . The VVorshipfuI Master generously provided a very excellent programme of music , svhich svas admirably carried out by the various artistes . The vocalists included Miss Marie
Fitzgerald , Aliss Flora Edsvards , Aliss Simpson , Air . J . D . Fitzgerald , and Bro . VV . Devey , whilst Miss Jessie AlcLaren , G . S . AL , gave a violin solo svith excellent taste . The various items svere heartily appreciated and applauded , several being redemanded . Bro . J . F . Haskins presided at the pianoforte .

A handsome Past Alaster ' s jesvel and a Past Alaster ' s collar and jesvel svere presented to Bro .
Cary , l . P . AI ., the presentation being accompanied by some flattering remarks by the W . M . on Bro , Gary ' s performance of his duties during the past year . Votes of condolence on the deaths of the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , Bros . Col . Shadsvell H . Gierke , and Maude , P . AL , svere passed and ordered to be recorded on the minutes , and after the transaction of some other business the
brethren closed dosvn , and adjourned to banquet . The usual toasts svere proposed , and svere interspersed svith songs and . recitations by Bro . J . S . Hindersvell , Chas , Allan , P . M ., Henry Thorn , W . Decvey , J . Alohoney , P . AL , F . II . Cowry , and J . H . Wakeham . Bro . Cary , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the VV . the duty of proposing that toast svould have fallen on him so early , but it svas svith very great pleasure that he did it , as it showed that he had gone through all the hard svork of the lodge , as others had done before him . It svas a sincere pleasure to him to propose the health of the brother svhom he had installed that evening svith all thc ancient rite , because he felt that Bro . Pugh would be a good Master and
svould reflect credit on the Tredegar Lodge . The Worshipful Alaster , in reply , said lhat he had hoped to be let off this duty , small though it svas . He had to thank the brethren for their kindness , and begged to assure them that he svould try as long as he svas W . AL in as efficient a manner as it vvas possible that it could be done . The Worshipful Alaster , in proposing " I'he Past Alasters , " said there vvas credit attached to the brethren

svho had passed the chair for svhat they had done . What svas svanted in a Iodge svas the presence of the Past Alasters , as it svas their presence svhich gave the W . AL and other svorking officers that amount of confidence svhich young Alasons require . Bro . Kendall , P . AL , in response , said the Past Masters svere pleased at all times to assist the W . M . and the other officers , especially the young Masons . They were
delighted to see the svork svell done . The l . P . AI . had done the Iodge credit , and the VV . AI . svould do the same , evidence of svhich he had given that night . Bro . Clarke , P . M ., also replied , and said he had been a member of the lodge from the commencement , and it had given him much pleasure to see hosv svell the different Alasters had performed their duty . Bro . Hurford , in reply to the toast of "The Initiates , "
said he could scarcely find svords to thank the brethren for the kind svay in svhich they had drunk the toast of himself and his brother initiate . The brethren might believe him that he felt that night that he had entered on a nesv sphere of life altogether , and he scarcely knesv svhat to say , as he had only been an apprentice in the Craft for a fesv hours . He had taken a step that evening svhich he had contemplated fur some considerable time and after a vast
amount of thought . He moved about svithin the circle of this little kingdom of ours and in the Sister Isle , and he often thought away from home svhen staying at an hotel , hosv delightful it svould be for him to be able to meet abrother and take him by the hand , and feel they svere brethren together instead of feeling they svere strangers . After mature thought he decided that the best course he could take svould be to join the honourable Craft of svhich all the brethren
present svere members . They might depend upon it he vvould keep the sacred and solemn oath he had taken that night , and he trusted that svhatever svas to be learned svithin the magic circle he svould be found an apt pupil to learn it , and as far as his ability and integrity svere concerned , he svould not bring disgrace on the honourable Craft . Being quite a novice he could not say much , but he hoped on future occasions they svould hear more of his voice
when he was better acquainted svith the mysteries . Bro . Watson also replied . The W . AL proposed " The Charities , " and aftersvards "The Installing Alaster , Bro . Cary . " Bro . Cary returned thanks . He had received a present that night svhich svas exceptional . They had been good enough to present him svith a Past Master's jesvel as a memento of their appreciation of the svay in svhich he had
discharged his duties and done his svork . But it svas principally due to the instruction of Bro . Hubbert and Bro . Stesvart , unfortunately not present , thathc learned his svork so svell . He hoped that the VV . AI . svould go through his year svell , install his successor , and receive the congratulations of all the brethren , and then join the ranks of the Past Alasters . The W . M . proposed " The Visitors , " and said that svhen
he and Bro . Hubbert visited Australia they svere received as brethren . That svas the svay Alasons svere received all over the Colonies . Visitors svere always welcome in lodges , and that svas the universal opinion expressed over the svhole svorld , whether here , in Australia , in Canada , or America . There they svere as pleased to see visitors as Alasons svere in England . The toast svas responded to , the remaining toasts svere honoured , and the brethren separated .

M ., the present Treasurer . As time svent on after his initiation , he thought he should never accomplish anything approaching the chair of K . S ., but he svorked and plodded on . and nosv

svished the brethren follosving him in office svould follosv his example in attending the lodge of instruction .

The svork svas admirably done . The following brethren svere invested as ofiicers : Bros . Charles H . Cary , I . P . M . ; Wm . Henry Aloore , S . W . ; Wm . Henry Elliott , J . W . j E . J . The VV . M . immediately commenced performing the svork of his year by initiating Alessrs . Edward llurford and Arthur William Watson .
M ., " said he did not think 9 , 10 , or 12 years ago that
the duty of proposing that toast svould have fallen on him so early , but it svas svith very great pleasure that he did it , as it showed that he had gone through all the hard svork of the lodge , as others had done before him .
