The Duke of Connaught visited the Oueen and the Prince and Princess of Wales at Osborne on Sunday , and remained to lunch , returning to Portsmouth in the afternoon . Bro . Earl and Countess Cosvper , after entertaining sundry house and shooting parties at their Bedfordshire seat , Wrest Park , will leave England for a two months' sojourn abroad .

It is denied that Bro . the Earl of Kintore , Governor of South Australia , has accepted the Governorship of Nesv Zealand , rendered vacant by the resignation of Bro . the Earl of Onslosv . The remains of the late Bro . Sir Morell Mackenzie svere interred in Wargrave Churchyard on Monday , some 20 mourners being present . Lady Mackenzie has received letters of sympathy from the Empress Frederick of Germany and the Prince of Wales .

Mr . Alderman Cotton svas ssvorn in as City Chamberlain at the Court of Aldermen , on Monday , and at once resigned his gosvn as Alderman for the Ward of Bridge Without , for which , accordingly , unless there is an exchange of svards , there is nosv a s'acar . cy .

We regret to record the death on the 30 th ult . of Bro . William Groves , P . M . of the Belgrave Lodge , No . 749 . Bro . Sir Charles Hall , O . C , M . P ., has been elected Recorder of London , in place of the late Sir Thomas Chambers . He svas born in 1 S 43 ; educated at Harrosv and Trinity College , Cambridge ; and for the last 14 years has held the office of Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales and Duchy of Cornsvall .

The many Masonic friends of Bro . VV . F . Lamonby svill be glad to learn that he has settled down in the Metropolis . For upsvards of 15 years before his departure for Australia , Bro . I-amonby was on the staff of the Field nesvspaper , and a vacancy having recently occurred , the appointment was offered to him and accepted . VVe wish him all success .

A panic occurred at the Prince ' s Theatre , Blackburn , on Saturday evening last , svhen the house svas crammed to suffocation by an audience composed moslly of the working class . The actors and orchestra , however , svent on svith the performance , and the terror rapidly subsided , but not till some benches , & c , had been smashed and many people had had their clothes torn to rags . But for thiscoolne . 's on the part of the company , a terrible catastrophe must have happened .

The funeral of Bro . S . Paige , Secretary of the Savage Club Lodge , svho died on Saturday last , took place at Highgate Cemetery yesterday ( Thursday ) . It svas the wish of the deceased that the funeral arrangements should be of a simple nature , otherwise his brethren would have been present in greater numbers to pay their

last tribute ol respect and regard to his memory—but both the Savage Club and Savage Club Lodge svere represented . Bro . Paige svas a victim to the influenza , svhich a somesvhat weak constitution prevented his rallying from . He svill be much missed in Masonic circles , especially in the Savage Club Lodge , svhere his sterling svorth and genial qualities svere much appreciated .

We are glad to hear that Bro . F . Dixon Bramald , of " 755 i who svas obliged to leave this country a fesv months ago , in consequence of repeated attacks of influenza , has arrived at Wellington , Nesv Zealand , in improved health . He has visited the Waterloo Lodge , No . 1 G 6 , under the Scotch Constitution , and has been most cordiall y received

with that loving kindness which is so characteristic of the Fraternity . We shall be glad to hear from our Colonial brother svith items of Masonic intelligence from time to time , and to learn of his svelfare in the new country . Bro . The Grand Lodge of Canada , at its recent meeting in Toronto , defeated , by a vote of 616 to 404 , a motion to prohibit the use of spiritous liquors as beverages at Masonic banquets .

The Commander-in-Chief has sanctioned the programme submitted to him in respect of the mobilisation of the London Volunteers at Easter , Dover and Chatham being the points of assembly . A marriage has been arranged-, and svill shortly take place , betsveen the Hon . William F . J . Dundas , brother of the Earl of Zetland , and Mary Maud , youngest daughter of Mrs . Prinsep , of 10 , Ovington-square .

According to a telegram from Port Said of the Sth inst . a collision occurred in the Suez Canal on that day between her Majesty's troopship Euphrates and the German steamer Guten . fels , by svhich the latter received considerable damage . The Duke of Cambridge , svho will shortly return to England , has expressed his intention of presiding at the svinter meeting of the National Rifle A- sociation , svhich svill

At a sitting of the Academy of Sciences at Paris on Monday , M . A special mcelingof the Committee of the Throat Hospital , Golden- ; ej'iare , was held on Tuesday , Mr . Welch , Chairman , presiding . Lord Londesborough was am mg those present . A resolution of condolence svith Lady Mackenzie and her family was passed , as was also a further resolution in the follosving terms : " 'That the Committee desire to record their sense of the irreparable loss

svhich this charity has sustained by the lamented death of Sir Morell Mackenzie , the founder of the institution , to the interestsof which , during a period of nearly eight-and-t * enty years he devoteel the greater part of his time , the best of his energies , and the svhole of his heart . " The latest victim to influenza is Sir James Caird , svho had reachi d the age of 7 ; . The son of a Wigtonshire laird , he

was educated at Edintiurgh University and then for a time devoted him-e f tn Ugh farming . A National Museum of Commerce and Industry is about to be created in Paris , and it is estimated that it svill cost 2 , 000 , 000 fr . The Paris Chamber of Commerce has agreed to supply 1 , 000 , 000 fr ., and the Minister of Commerce has undertaken to ask Parliament to furnish the remainder .

Net fishing on the Tay opened on Thursday under most favourable circumstances . The liver is teeming svith fish , and on some stations as many fish has'e been already caught as will pay the rent for the year . On Stanley waters two and a half tons of salmon svere secured in a fesv hours .

The Prince and Princess of Wales , svith Prince George and Princesses Victoria and Maud of Wales and Colonel Stanley Clarke , left Victoria Station on Thursday b y special train for Eastbourne , svhere they svill remain at Comp'on House , belonging to the Duke of Devonshire , for several sveeks .

A curious shooting accident occurred at Whale Island on Wednesday afternoon . The men of the Naval Gunnery School were being exercised in lield movements , and svere advancing in line svhen one of them dropped a pebble into his rille , and aimed at a flosver in front of him . Just then a seaman from the gun shed ran across in front of the line and received the pebble in the base of the back . The missile has not yet been extracted .

The late Prince Louis Lucien Bonaparte has left to the nation his valuable collection of metals , svhich is now in course of arrangement at the Science Museum , South Kensington . •' The collection , " says Nature , " is rich in specimens of the rarer metals . " This bequest is the result of a promise made to Professor Roberts-Austen , the Prince having been much interested in the Percy Collection at South Kensington .
