that the genial good humour and kindl y courtesy at all times evinced by Bro . Richardson , had , if it svere possible , streng thened the respect and esteem in svhich the I . P . M . had been held for many years past , and that he could only hope that at the expiration of his osvn Mastership he would retire carrying the same feelings and kindly regards . The Installing Master , in response , svhile expressing his

heartfelt thanks , said he felt that he had not deserved half the praises bestosved upon him . He thanked the Past Masters and officers for the assistance rendered to him , and could not help regretting leaving the chair just as he felt competent to discharge the duties of the important office . A banquet follosved , and the Worshipful Alaster in the exercise of his discretion requested several of the Past Masters to assist him svith the toast list , svhich they did . Some of the speeches made by those brethren being of more than ordinary merit .

Bro . Dehane , P . P . G . D . Essex , made a most excellent and amusing speech in response to the toast of " The Visitors . " He gave some very interesting details in connection svith Craft lodges of instruction in the West of London , and concluded by urging upon those officers of No . 141 and others svho svere anxious to fill svorking

positions in their old and highly respected lodge , to persevere in accyuiring Masonic knowledge by regularly attending lodges of instruction . In consequence of the recent deaths in Masonic circles , the proceedings svere necessarily curtailed , and no regular programme of music presented .

Confidence Lodge ( No 193 ) . —The regular monthly meetinj of this lodge was held on Monday , the Sth inst ., at Anderton ' s Hotel , Fleet-street , E . C ., svhen there svere present Bros . The toast of " The W . M . " svas given in most eloquent terms by the I . P . M ., Bro . Cockell , stating that his svork that evening had been rendered in such an excellent manner that it could not have been excelled . He only regretted the time for occupying the chair svould so soon have expired , as his year of office so far had been one of marked

success . In reply , the W . M . said he svas deeply grateful for such expressions , and he only svished to deserve them , but with all he had only done his dutv . He trusted he might long be spared to represppt the United Pilgrims Lodge , and to see such an exc . lleiit number of brethren coming forward to keep up the prestige .

The W . M ., in giving the toast of "The Initiate , " remarked in very high terms of him having been so excellently connected , and stated that the earnest manner he had shosvn already augured svell for his future . In reply , the Initiate stated he had indeed been very much struck with the beautiful ceremony , and trusted that he might be able to realise to its fullest as time svent on all he

had heard . For Ins part he svould endeavour to carry out those solemn pledges to the very best of his ability . The toast of "The Visitors" svas ahly given by the W . AL , svho remarked that it svas the distinguishing feature of the lodge to svelcome them most heartily . Bros . Horsman , Moorman , Bing , and Nutting responded , one and all congratulating the lodge upon such an excellent

Master , and having such an array of officers , svho had shosvn theirability that evening , and also for such hospitality which had been extended to them . The Worshipful Alaster next gave the toast of "The Past Masters , " svhom he stated svere really the support of the lodge , and svho had alsvays given their very best endeavours for the benefit of it .

This was replied to by Bros . Terry , Peters , and Joyce , svho thanked the W . M . and brethren for such expressions , and promised their most cordial support to the svhole of the brethren . In excellent terms the VV . M . next gave the toast of " The Officers , " stating that no W . AI . could possibly have better . In reply , Bro . Stone , J . W ., stated that it svould be the

ambition of them all to emulate the VV . AI . and the Past Masters , and although it svould be very difficult to surpass the svorking of the W . AL , they all trusted to reach as nearly as possible to it . Bros . Peters , P . M ., Sec , and Laing , J . D ., also replied . The Tyler's toast closed a most successful meeting . Bros . Cockell , Beste , Joyce , and Atkinson afforded great pleasure svith their harmony .

and the loss the Craft had sustained in the death of their Grand Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadsvell II . Clerke . Bro . Ssvetman , I . P . M ., then rose to propose the next toast , svhich under the circumstances might be considered the toast of the evening— " The Health of the W . M ., " it being the jubilee of his birthday . so often shosvn they knesv he had the svelfare of the lodg at heart , and he asked them to join svith him in svishing him long life and prosperity . The toast svas received svith enthusiasm . The W . M ., in responding , said he svas asvare of the friendship and goodsvill of many of the members tosvards him , but the svay it had been expressed that evening had

taken him by surprise . He thanked them all very much indeed , and said it would alsvays be his study to look after the interests of the Iodge . The W . AL next gave the toast of "The Masonic Charities , " coupling svith it the name of Bro . J . G . Stevens . Bro . Stevens , in responding , said , as they svere asvare ,

the W . M . svas acting in conjunction svith his "Tsvinn Brother" as Stesvard atthe Jubilee Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and he trusted that the brethren svould rally round them , and send them up svith a good list , and , referring to the sturdy support given on previous occasions and the handsome sum , viz ., 50 guineas ,

the lodge had already given for this special occasion , thanked them in the name of the Institution svhich he represented . " The Visitors " svas then given . Bros . Officers , '' and said they svere all pleased to knosv that in their Pro Grand Alaster , Lord Lathom , they bad a brother of great social position and vast Masonic knosvledge , svho had done a great deal in the past to benefit Alasonry in every svay . Then they had the Earl of Alount Edgcumbe , Deputy Grand Alaster , svhose utterances on the last meeting of Grand Lodge must have been appreciated by all . In the

late Bro . Col . Shadsvell II . Clerke , they had lost a gallant soldier , a courteous gentleman , and one of the most able Masonic svorkers not only in the Craft , but in every Degree in Masonry , Bro . George Everett , G . Treas ., in reply , said it svas a great honour and privilege for him to respond for so important a toast , for time-honoured and well-worn though it

svas , it vvas always received svith great heartiness . Thc pleasure of responding svas enhanced svhen he replied in one of his osvn lodges , because he knesv the members all rejoiced that one amongst them had been deemed svorthy of thc honour of holding so distinguished an ofiice as that of Grand Treasurer . It svas an office one ought to feel very proud to hold , for he held it by the suffrages of his

brother Alasons . It svould ill become any brother to hold the position for more than the one year for svhich he svas elected , for there svere far more brethren svho deserved the ofiice than svould ever attain it . There svere 24 Past Alasters present at the installation that evening , and every one as a member of Grand Lodge was a constituent of his . He svas glad to meet them to say hosv

thankful he svas for the honour paid him in his unanimous election as Grand Treasurer . He svould say on behalf of the Grand Officers that they highly appreciated the manner in sslsicVs they were always received , and it was a great pleasure to them to come amongst the brethren in order to testify by their presence the deep interest they took in all that appertained to Freemasonry .

Bro . J . J . La Feuillade , LP . AL , said lie had the privilege of proposing the next toast—that of "The Health of the W . AL" —and he svas sure they had placed a brother in that position of svhom they svould be proud . They had seen Bro . Dennis , W . AL , going through his duties in the lodge for some years , and thev felt sure he ss'ould be success ! ul

during his year of office , and prove himself a svorthy brother . Bro . James Dennis , VV . M ., . thanked the brethren for having placed him in the position of VVorshipfuI Alaster . He did not think that since he had been a membercertainly since he had been an officer—that he had ever heen absent until the last meeting , svhen in his absence , through illness , they elected him unanimously to the chair . Bro . Dehane , P . P . G . D . Essex , made a most excellent and amusing speech in response to the toast of " The Visitors . " He gave some very interesting details in connection svith Craft lodges of instruction in the West of London , and concluded by urging upon those officers of No . 141 and others svho svere anxious to fill svorking

positions in their old and highly respected lodge , to persevere in accyuiring Masonic knowledge by regularly attending lodges of instruction . In consequence of the recent deaths in Masonic circles , the proceedings svere necessarily curtailed , and no regular programme of music presented .

The toast of " The W . M . " svas given in most eloquent terms by the I . P . M ., Bro . Cockell , stating that his svork that evening had been rendered in such an excellent manner that it could not have been excelled . He only regretted the time for occupying the chair svould so soon have expired , as his year of office so far had been one of marked

success . In reply , the W . M . said he svas deeply grateful for such expressions , and he only svished to deserve them , but with all he had only done his dutv . He trusted he might long be spared to represppt the United Pilgrims Lodge , and to see such an exc . lleiit number of brethren coming forward to keep up the prestige .

The W . M ., in giving the toast of "The Initiate , " remarked in very high terms of him having been so excellently connected , and stated that the earnest manner he had shosvn already augured svell for his future . In reply , the Initiate stated he had indeed been very much struck with the beautiful ceremony , and trusted that he might be able to realise to its fullest as time svent on all he

had heard . For Ins part he svould endeavour to carry out those solemn pledges to the very best of his ability . The toast of "The Visitors" svas ahly given by the W . AL , svho remarked that it svas the distinguishing feature of the lodge to svelcome them most heartily . Bros . Horsman , Moorman , Bing , and Nutting responded , one and all congratulating the lodge upon such an excellent

Master , and having such an array of officers , svho had shosvn theirability that evening , and also for such hospitality which had been extended to them . The Worshipful Alaster next gave the toast of "The Past Masters , " svhom he stated svere really the support of the lodge , and svho had alsvays given their very best endeavours for the benefit of it .

This was replied to by Bros . Terry , Peters , and Joyce , svho thanked the W . M . and brethren for such expressions , and promised their most cordial support to the svhole of the brethren . In excellent terms the VV . M . next gave the toast of " The Officers , " stating that no W . AI . could possibly have better . In reply , Bro . Stone , J . W ., stated that it svould be the

ambition of them all to emulate the VV . AI . and the Past Masters , and although it svould be very difficult to surpass the svorking of the W . late Bro . Col . Shadsvell II . Clerke , they had lost a gallant soldier , a courteous gentleman , and one of the most able Masonic svorkers not only in the Craft , but in every Degree in Masonry , Bro . George Everett , G . Treas ., in reply , said it svas a great honour and privilege for him to respond for so important a toast , for time-honoured and well-worn though it

svas , it vvas always received svith great heartiness . Thc pleasure of responding svas enhanced svhen he replied in one of his osvn lodges , because he knesv the members all rejoiced that one amongst them had been deemed svorthy of thc honour of holding so distinguished an ofiice as that of Grand Treasurer . It svas an office one ought to feel very proud to hold , for he held it by the suffrages of his

brother Alasons . It svould ill become any brother to hold the position for more than the one year for svhich he svas elected , for there svere far more brethren svho deserved the ofiice than svould ever attain it . There svere 24 Past Alasters present at the installation that evening , and every one as a member of Grand Lodge was a constituent of his . He svas glad to meet them to say hosv

thankful he svas for the honour paid him in his unanimous election as Grand Treasurer . He svould say on behalf of the Grand Officers that they highly appreciated the manner in sslsicVs they were always received , and it was a great pleasure to them to come amongst the brethren in order to testify by their presence the deep interest they took in all that appertained to Freemasonry .
