Stretton ' s handsome gift . In a very able and eloquent speech the rev . brother alluded to the many and valued services of Bro . ' Stretton not only to Freemasonry , but to the town at -large , and concluded by expressing , in the name of all the brethren , an earnest hope that their , esteemed brother might long be spared in health , happiness , and

prosperity to come amongst them . The R . W . Bro . W . Kelly , P . P . G . M ., Bro . J . W . Smith , P . M ., Bro . M'Allister , P . M ., and Bro . Cleaver , I . P . M ., also addressed the lodge , each hearing personal testimony to the esteem in which Bro . Stretton is held by all the brethren . At the supper the health of Bro . BRIGHTON . —Royal York Lodge ( No . 315 ) . —On Tuesday , the 2 nd inst ., the annual and installation meeting of this lodge took place at the Royal Pavilion . Bro . C . W . Hudson , W . M ., presided , and after the ordinary business of the lodge invested the newly-elected W . M ., Bro . Thomas Packharo , a brother who has not only rendered good service to the Craft , but has eminently

distinguished himself as one of the most painstaking officers of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows , in connection with which he has held the highest office it has been in the power of the district to confer upon him . during the past year on behalf of the lodge . The lodge being closed , the brethren then adjourned to refreshment in the banqueting room , Bros . Sayers and Marks proving themselves , as is their wont , most excellent caterers , leaving nothing for the most fastidious appetite to desire . Especial mention must be made of their wines , which were of the most choice vintages . Messrs . Balchin and

Son supplied the flowers , and nothing more beautiful have we seen in floral table decoration . Miss Balchin ' s bouquets were exquisite , lovely homage to " Flora , " and the general grouping was universally praised . songs and concerted pieces . We must not omit to notice the exertions of Bro . Nicholson , whose comic singing is beyond all praise , nor that Bro . W . Roe kindly accompanied on the pianoforte . The lodge was opened shortly after six o ' clock with prayer , and the minutes of the

previous meeting read and confirmed . Candidates were due to take their First and Third Degree respectively , but neither , unfortunately , put in an appearance , and thereby caused great disappointment to the visitors who had come expressly to see the " work . " After the lodge had been raised to and lowered from the Third Degree , Bro . J . R . Lever rose and said he had a very pleasing duty to

perform , viz ., in the name of the lodge to present Bro . P . M . Donbavand with a gold Past Master ' s jewel for his ser-\ ices as W . M . during 1878 . The brethren , he said , were well aware of the merits and zeal of their Bro . Donbavand ; how willing he was at all times to do anything he could for the welfare of the lodge , not only in that room , but at the social board , where his gifted elocutionary powers

had often been heard with delight by them all . He was quite sure that all the brethren thoroughly liked Bro . Donbavand , and felt as pleased to present him with the jewel as he himself was to receive it . Bro . Donbavand , in a few appropriate words , thanked the brethren for their gift . The visiting brethren afterwards expressed their " Hearty good wishes , " and the lodge was closed in peace and harmony at 8 . /« .

COCKERMOUTH . — Skiddaw Lodge ( No . 1002 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Tuesday evening , the 2 nd inst . Bro . T . Bird , W . M ., presided , supported by a good muster of officers and members . Bro . Jos . Blackburn , of Lodge 9 62 , Workington , was balloted for as a joining member , and unanimously

accepted . Mr . John Smith was next balloted for as a candidate , and approved , after which , being admitted , he was regularly initiated into Masonry by the W . M ., this being the first occasion Bro . Bird has officiated . The work , however , was performed in a first-class style . The charge having been delivered by Bro . T . C Robinson from the S . W . ' s chair , the lodge was then closed .

After the confirmation of the minutes , the W . M . proceeded to open

the lodge in the Second Degree and the Third Degree , and then called upon the S . D . ( Bro . W . Rowbottom ) to give a lecture on " the origin of Masonic ritual and tradition as manifested by the geometric design and symbolism of the Great Pyramid . " Bro . W . Rowbottom , who had given the lecture on two previous occasions , once before the Fermnr Hesketh Lodge , 1350 , and on another occasion before

the Arboretum Lodge , 731 , was , therefore , induced to favour his mother lodge with the fruits of his researches in this branch of science , and in order that the brethren might more fully appreciate his efforts he had provided a drawing ( on a very large scale ) of the section of the Great Pyramid for the occasion . To give even a summary of this important lecture would be to encroach upon the space

allotted for lodge gatherings , for the ready delivery of it occupied over one hour ; and when it is regarded as being not only an able digest of the chronological pointing of the Great Pyramid , but also by its inimitable proportions a great Masonic beacon , indicating lessons which the inspired architect had clearly defined some 4050 years ago , and which was amply treated upon by Bro . Rowbottom ,

it was not surprising that the W . M ., in proposing the thanks of the lodge to the lecturer , should solicit Bro . Rowbottom to divide the matter into three parts , and give it on three future occasions , in order that the brethren might be better prepared to grasp the important lessons which had been laid before the lodge in such a masterly style . This Bro . Rowbottom promised to do , and we

believe that , in addition to this , the Craft may have the pleasure presently of reading what Bro . Rowbottom has so diligently gathered ; for we understand that , in addition to the request of those present that he should publish it for the benefit of the Order , there have been those who had previously heard the lecture who had made the same request . We , therefore , feel that in overcoming the diffidence of the lecturer to commit his efforts to the custody of

the press he will be conferring a boon on his brethren , who will duly appreciate his efforts . The lodge having been closed in the several Degrees with peace and harmony , the brethren retired Jfor refreshment , when an ample repast was provided by the worthy host of the George Hotel ( W . Bro . H . Capit ) , after which the usual Masonic toasts were given , and a very pleasant hour was spent , the brethren regarding the sublime teaching of the Order as a true standard for everyday life . J ARROW . —St . Bede Lodge ( No . 11 TO ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 25 th ult ., before a goodly assembly of members and visitors , Bro . J . Witter , W . M ., in thc chair , supported by a full staff of officers and a good attendance of the P . M . ' s of the lodge . A new member was initiated , two passed to the Second , and one raised to thc Third Degree . Bro . J .

Witter , W . M ., moved the following resolution : "That a sum of £ 5 be devoted to the fund for the relief of the distress in Ireland , " which was carried unanimously . Bro . J . Pinder , P . M ., also moved , "That the usual annual subscriptions be paid to the Boys' and Girls' Schools . " Carried unanimously . This concluded the formal business of the lodge . I he lodge was then closed in the usual form .
